Here’s a little breaking news via Chad Jennings:
The Yankees have promoted OF Freddy Guzman to the majors. RHP Anthony Claggett was DFA’d to make room for him on the 40-man roster.
Guzman has played only 37 games in the majors, none since an eight-game cameo with Texas in 2007. He was 19 of 89 in those games but stole 22 bases. The Yankees appear to be considering him for a postseason roster spot as a pinch runner. In theory, they could go with one less pitcher in the first round and keep Guzman.
Guzman started this season in the Red Sox organization and bounced around before the Yankees acquired him from Baltimore on Aug. 31.
Also, Ian Kennedy will be pitching for Scranton on Wednesday in the International League playoffs. He’s expected to start and go 3-4 innings. Good step on the road back for Ian.

Good to hear Ian is progressing. Hopefully we will see him up in the majors sometime next year with another crop of young guys. I don’t know much about Guzman. But i’am guessing he is a nice defense OF Util guy.

Yankees signed Guzman only recently–he was with the Orioles at one point last year I think. Utility guy that can play anywhere, speed is a good asset of his.

The Critics: There is a lot of talk among club executives about what they believe is a growing disparity. I think there will be a lot of discussion about find ways to tweak with the economic structure, whether it’s through the draft or the schedule or the luxury tax, before the next labor negotiations start.

Guzman isn’t good for much more than pinch running. Gardner will be a part of the post season roster as a true bench player.
Guzman is not taking Brett Gardner’s place. Also I don’t know about Claggett having a ton of upside/promise. The Sheffield trade was about A) getting rid of Sheffield and B) taking a chance on a few young arms. Sanchez & Claggett were whiffs, jury still out on Whelan.

In 2007 major league baseball was the first league in the history of American professional sports that no team had a winning percentage above .600 or below .400
Since 2002 every Division has been represented in the World Series at least once and there has’nt been a repeat World Champion since 2000. Last year the 2007 last place Rays played in the World Series and mid market Philadelphia won it. There are weak franchises in all sports, most of them either poorly run ( Pittsburgh) or in cities that have marginal attendance even in good years ( Oakland, SF).

I see no way they could add someone just for speed and defense. Gardner already fills that role nicely. Of course, one advantage if they do is more fastballs thrown to the Yanks power hitting lineup.
Everyone remembers the one guy who was safe, but they forget all the guys that got thrown out and lost the playoffs. Or the guys who actually had to, you know, get a hit to bring in the pinch runner.
Totally overrated when we have Brett Gardner already.

1. Great news about IPK. Apart from how he does, his coming back from as frightening a problem (aneurysm in his arm) should be applauded by all.

I think they all deserve consideration. The less obvious candidates are Jeter and Cano, but I included them because Jeter is having a career year post-prime, and Cano is bouncing back from a terrible year last year.
I’d be interested to hear everyone’s thoughts.
Terrific news on IPK. If I recall correctly, he was basically ruled out of pitching again this season at any level when he had the initial surgery. If that’s right, it means that he’s doing better than expected.

Considering Swisher hit .219 last year and was expected to, at most, platoon with Nady, I think he’s the most pleasant surprise. Everybody else was previously very capable of doing what they’ve done this year.
I’d rather have Pena on the bench than Guzman. We already have Hairston, Hinske, and Gardner/Melky as guys on the bench who can play the OF. Currently only Hairston can play the middle infield. Pena and Hairston are both fast enough to be a PR and give the team more versatility.

It was facetious, as my post berating a meaningless post was in itself meaningless, and we are all trying to win the grand prize. Especially you, who decided to make this a three way for meaningless post grandprize seekery.
I didn’t include Godzilla even though he’s definitely having a good comback year, because I don’t find it so surprising that he’s hitting at this level.
Coney was able to come back from the aneurism the same year, but I think I remember reading IPK’s was worse. Good for him. Can never have enough pitching.
To me the biggest surprize on the 2009 Yankees, isn’t so much the talent of the players. Everyone knew the talent was there.
The biggest surprise to me is how well all of the players on the team gel together. The chemistry of the team is the biggest and most pleasent surprise

Just curious that they chose to DFA Claggett to make room on the roster for him. I realize that both Wang and Nady are already on the 60-day DL, but Miranda and Towers are 2 guys that really have no future and limited value to the Yankees future and they would have seemed logical before Claggett. I also wonder if recalling someone like De La Rosa or Garcia and placing them on the 60-day DL would have been an option. Claggett has seen a decent amount of success in Scranton, so I would hate to see him get lost for nothing, much like Jackson and Hacker were (though we know he likely will be picked up by Pittsburgh, since they seem to love all our young arms).

Jeter would be my answer. Guys just don’t raise their game the way he did from last year to this year at his age. He obviously busted his hump, improving his fielding, adding 100 points to his OPS, and becoming the unquestioned MVP of the ‘09 Yankees, IMO.
If we are debating pleasant surprise I’ll go along with Swisher not only for his play, but his personality and how that seems to have convinced the whole organization that it’s ok to have fun.
The biggest disappointment to me is that Matsui has not been able to get healthy meaning his Yankees career is almost certainly in its final two months. Runnerup would be Joba’s lack of progress.
I’d love to see IPK make it up here this season for a game. Despite his struggles last season, I still really like him and could see him making some impact next season. Glad to hear he is getting some innings in after his surgery.

I still say if Acevas is healthy he’s the #4 starter for the playoffs (that’s only 2 starts unless you go 7 in the ALCS) and you go back to the unhittable Joba + Hughes + Rivera 7-8-9. If we stay midge free we win the series!

Tough question to answer. No indication he’s good enough to be in the Yankees ‘10 rotation. At the same time, he’s going to have prove he can pitch post-injury to establish any real trade value. I’d guess he’s in SWB again to start ‘10, with a call-up maybe later in the year. When they inevitably need a 6th starter or pen help.
If Guzman can play a strong outfield he could also be used as a late inning defensive replacement. They don’t need power off the bench in the first two rounds, they need a pinch runner if Gardner is already in the game and possibly corner outfielders for the ninth inning. Aside from that the bench players won’t see any action.

The other thing that DFA’ing Claggett does is take him away from Scranton, when they are 3 wins away from the IL title for the 2nd year in a row. Claggett was a huge part of the pitching staff and was likely the number one righty out of the pen at this point, since all the top guys are in NY. I know that the Yankees are most interested in winning in NY, but they could have waited to make this move in a week and had the same affect in NY, while also letting Scranton go for the title, couldn’t they have?
I can’t see any team trading anything significant for IPK. He hasn’t proven himself and is coming off a serious operation.

By the way, on the subject of Cone and aneurysms, I had the good fortune to attend Cone’s first game back from the aneurysm in Oakland in 1996. He went either 5 or 6 no-hit innings before Mr. Torre pulled him due to the pitch count.

I think that at this point we have to just go with what we have had for this entire season, our proven players if you will. calling a guy up at this stage, especially with no MLB experience, is fine but not on the playoff roster. I dont see why we need to make changes when everything has gone well so far

Why are you worrying about Fielder right now? It’s 2009 and the Yanks are cruising to the playoffs with the best record in baseball. Let this season and post season play out and then you have all winter to fret over what moves the Red Sox do or don’t make.

Thats exaclty why I brought up such a trade now STEVE. I have nothing to worry about with the current state of the pinstripes and in a desperate move to talk about anything other than why posts on websites such as this are useless I wanted to bring up a very real possiblity, however far off in the distant future it may be. Fielder is an absolute beast and he would help the Theo Gay-stein’s master plan of moving Youkilis to third and having a steady hard-hitting 1B. Sports Guy, what more can be said of Jeter? He is forging his own destiny now in the hall of yankee greats. He will be a Captain that presided over one of the great yankee dynasties, and one of the greatest yankee failures, and of the great rise of the Hughsian era.

Jeter Best Player Ever
Good for Mr. Kennedy. He has had a really tough couple of years. A lot of guys we would never hear from again. This kid has shown some resolve. I am starting to believe that he will be in the rotation within 3-4 years.
GTLU is back to its regularly scheduled September hiatus.

Burnett, he has the best chance to completely dominate but to be honest I feel like we will never need more than 4 starts in the ALDS and more than 5 in the ALCS.
This yankees team is going to demolish the postseason.
I like the Guzman move. Precisely the type of bench player that can win you a late-inning playoff game. Here’s how I see the position players starting out for the ALDS.
SS – Jeter
LF – Damon
1B – Teixeira
3B – Rodriguez
DH – Matsui
C – Posada
2B – Cano
RF – Swisher
CF – Cabrera
Bench
C – Molina
IF – Hairston
OF – Gardner
OF – Guzman
OF – Hinske (if the Yankees go with 11 pitchers)
I think in the ALDS without having to pinch-hit for pitchers that Guzman gives you more than Hinske. He’s a better baserunner and fielder. If they Yankees decide to go with 11 pitchers, then I would think Hinske gets the spot as he has IF/OF versatility.

Guzman can be on the roster. You have to be in the organization by 9-1. You can then replace somebody on the DL, such as Nady or Wang.

Guzman instead of an extra pitcher would be a good move. ALDS being a shorter series, you have to go in attack mode with the offense and create any opportunities whenever you can. There’s one less game you can lose. Wouldn’t rule it out for ALCS or WS either.

Gardner & Guzman as pinch runners in the playoffs? it does make sense though, one could pinch run for Matsui, while the other pinch runs for Posada late in the game.
The Yankees are going to need some legit speed off the bench this postseason. It’s extremely helpful and I hope they utilize it.

You are probably right, but I am willing to give it a shot
While I guess Guzman could theoretically be playing for a chance at the postseason roster, I think in the end he will be a non-factor. The biggest postseason factor will once again be Alex Rodriguez, and no matter how many home runs he hits if the pitching stinks it is probably his fault.
Pete- I was unaware of the ability to replace someone on the DL liek Wang/Nady thats an interesting move considering it allows Girardi to play that option like a game of chess and postiion people like Guzman there for potential usefulness
