It’s good to be Nick Swisher

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Sep 15, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

joannagarciaOur pals at The Big Lead have a post up about the romantic life of Nick Swisher.

The Swish dish is Joanna Garcia, who is on Gossip Girl. From what I am told, Nick is very happy. That’s not good news for you ladies out there who like bad haircuts and a high on-base percentage.

Meanwhile Wilson Betemit just asked out a waitress at a truck stop in Charlotte and she threw his tip back at him.

Swisher is 16th in OPS in the American League. 16th! Whoever told Brian Cashman to try and trade for Nick should get free dinners at NYY Steak for life.

  6. m September 15th, 2009 at 1:34 pm

Cute. But the Yankees are going to have to hook up Selig with a startlet to get anything tilted our way. Opening AND closing at Fenway?

The official Yankees website has a link “Opening day matchup rare for Yanks, Sox”. Because both should be playing at home?

She looks much better than she does in that pic.

If Swish shows up on Gossip Girl that just may equal Bucky Dent’s appearance in the ABC made for TV move “The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders” that was quite possibly one of the finest made for TV movies I’ve ever seen next to The Thorn Birds.

I’ve been saying all year what a great trade that was. It’s crappy that Cashman gets killed for the bad moves he makes but gets absolutely no credit for great moves like that.

Mac, this whole thread is now going to be about analyzing how pretty or not pretty this girl is – it’s demeaning. Pete doesn’t like us talking about Kim Jones’ looks (which I agree with) – what’s the difference?

Swisher’s throw that sailed last night cost the Yankees a run.

His throws had been much better of late, but not that one.

A good throw and the runner was a dead duck at 2nd.

As for Swisher’s romantic partners, I’m with Betsy, but whatever floats people’s boats, I guess.

Swisher’s GF is part of the “Wives Club” apparently. They all had drinks together a couple of weeks ago.

And I agree, Joann Garcia is much hotter than that picture shows her.

  22. Tex's friend September 15th, 2009 at 1:39 pm

dont think this schedule is right. arent the dodgers supposed to be playing AT yankee stadium and not in LA?

  23. Jerkface September 15th, 2009 at 1:39 pm

The yankees have a brutal April and May next season.

April includes opening vs Sox and Rays, then Angels and Rangers then a westcoast trip to Angels.

May features 17 games in a row vs Bos, Det, Rays, Min, and Mets!?!?

    WHO DESIGNS THIS SCHEDULE?!

And in July we have a westcoast trip right after a homestand with no day off.

Of course Boston gets Kansas City, Baltimore, and Toronto in April. And we get Dodgers and Arizona on the road, they get Colorado and San Fran.

They once again only get 1 road trip vs LAA, and only 3 westcoast trips counting interleague, we have 4/5

Fairly certain the schedulers live in Boston.

Just because he’s in the major leagues doesn’t mean Swisher has to date only swimsuit models or Playboy bunnies, even though by the numerous reports of other professional athletes’ spouses one would expect that to be standard issue when one signs a major league contract in a sport.

    Betsy is correct.

Can’t complain about people discussing Jones’ looks, Pete, if you’re OK with objectifying Swisher’s companion.

Further, who really cares enough to devote a blog entry to this?

Just keep working on keeping the runners honest, Nick, because you need to put in the work.

  26. RMEL September 15th, 2009 at 1:41 pm

best trade in years…he is still young and under control…will never have a high batting average, but will hit 25+ homers, drive in 85+ runs and have a OBP of .370+ not bad at all

  27. Kyle September 15th, 2009 at 1:41 pm

Kim Jones is a reporter… she shouldn’t be judged on her looks. She should be judged by how well she does her job. She doesn’t have to be eye candy. That’s probably why Pete doesn’t want comments about her on the blog.

These celebrities are a different story. They ARE judged by their looks and want to be seen.

  28. Mac Daddy September 15th, 2009 at 1:41 pm

Yet another year with the Dodgers not visiting NY. We go out there again. And we go out to Arizona.

When are we going to go out to SD?

  32. m September 15th, 2009 at 1:43 pm

I’m surprised at this. Did Madonna get an entry? Jessica Biel? Was the famous beach volleyball picture posted by Pete? Did he said that it was his duty as a journalist to put it up? Or am I making that up?

    Cash, that’s very true.

  34. Trevor September 15th, 2009 at 1:44 pm

  35. Al September 15th, 2009 at 1:44 pm

So we go out on the road for 6 games on the West Coast, come back for 6 games at home, go back out on the road for 8 West Coast games.

    Wow.

These interleague schedules are just strange.

  39. Tex's friend September 15th, 2009 at 1:46 pm

i do think this schedule is wrong, because last year they announced the dodgers would be coming to yankee stadium in interleague.

No knock on Jones’ work – she’s fine – but the Yankees certainly judged her on her looks: why do you think Waldman got the boot?

Waldman is a much better baseball analyst that Jones, but she didn’t have the “eye candy” factor, and the broadcast is less rich for it. Jones is much more of a football person, while Waldman has been in baseball for years and has all sorts of contacts, etc.

You might say the sound bites nature of the pre and postgame don’t allow for nuanced stuff like Waldman’s radio spot, but she still brings a better knowledge and more enlightened questioning. I know Jones gets her cues from YES, but a more informed reporter is a more informed reporter, regardless.

what a stupid schedule, only 7 games at home in april (weather wise that might be the only positive). i hope we improve EVEN MORE in the offseason with a player addition or 2, get off to a hot start, and proceed to bury the everybody next year.

    http://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/...../#comments

Kepner has a good blog post about Garcia, er, I mean the double steal. He asks a good question, did you like the move and how do you feel about Tex being lifted when he was killing the Angels? Would you want to see the move in the postseason?

Thoughts are mixed, but because it worked out you gotta love the move.

If it failed? You’re still tied at home.

Supposedly, Girardi put Gardner in to steal, not pinch run. And also the double steal was not called. If so, then Alex did a good job following BG with his eyes. Of course the errant throw helped him “land” at third, too!

The point was brought by randy and Doreen earlier. A lot of basestealing success comes from the mere threat or act of stealing. Very difficult to make the perfect throw. And as I said, you can’t throw 2 guys out at the same time. Look out for any combo that involves Jeter or Alex with Brett Gardner as the lead runner.

  51. Christina- Pictures of the Girardi and A-Rod ejection September 15th, 2009 at 1:56 pm

I thought I read somewhere that the schedules were computer generated of some sort. Not sure how accurate that can be though.

  52. bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes September 15th, 2009 at 1:56 pm

A poster on river ave raised the subject of Mike Harkey, and his contribution to the success of the bullpen.

Why not blog about him? That would be more interesting.

Harkey was interviewed by Jones recently, and he had a lot to say.

How about a piece on him? He is sort of the invisible man to many people.

  53. m September 15th, 2009 at 1:58 pm

Oh, and I like the fact that Girardi lifted Tex. Of course you lose his glove and bat, but at this point of the season the players are put on notice. It’s all about giving your team the best chance to win. And a pinch runner in that situation not only was the best chance, but gave us the win, too.

  54. pat September 15th, 2009 at 2:00 pm

    bodhi -

that’s a great idea. in fact, all of the Yankees coaches this season are a bit of an unknown, at least to me. I heard them referred to as the “no-name” coaches. They would certainly make a more interesting story to me than the latest girlfriend du jour. :)

  57. Christina- Pictures of the Girardi and A-Rod ejection September 15th, 2009 at 2:01 pm

m, thanks for the article. Would your opinion of that move changed had Gardner been out at third? Just so you know it was written by Ken Plutnicki rather than Kepner.

  58. Rex September 15th, 2009 at 2:01 pm

“How is it that we had TWO West Coast trips within a little over a month, and Boston, for example, got all their trips out of the way before, I believe, the AS Break?”

Boston did their two left coast trips in just over a month too. Just a different month. They were done with the west coast in mid May.

  59. yada yada yada September 15th, 2009 at 2:02 pm

look closer at the proposed 2010 schedule for the Yanks:

    only 3 games in Anaheim.

that should quell some of the angst, no?

  60. jennifer September 15th, 2009 at 2:04 pm

SO we begin the season with a 7 day road trip and end the season with a 6 day. Nice. I hope this isn’t set in stone. Total BS!

    Bleachers-$30

  62. Trevor September 15th, 2009 at 2:08 pm

  63. m September 15th, 2009 at 2:10 pm

    pat,

Absolutely, just so used to seeing JD trot around the bases, I forgot about him.

    Christina,

I think so, I rarely second-guess Girardi. If Gardner’s thrown out (good chance he’s not), then Alex is in scoring position. This is one of those 4th and inches situation, but not as costly if it doesn’t work out because we’re at home. :) And thanks for that, I assumed Kepler because he does most of the posts. Bad girl, mel.

And if Scoscia had two good basestealers on the bags, he’d have done the same thing. Did you see his face? Absolute disgust. Of course he looks like that even when he’s thrilled or neutral. :)

The other night I “wandered” into the bleachers and had a good view of the Yanks pen. I’ll say this about Harkey….he’s a big…big dude.

    Checking him out…couple of facts.

He was a 1st round pick in 1987, 4th overall. He had a pretty good year in 1990 going 12-6 with a 3.26 ERA

    In 1992 in ERA+ was 191 which is Mariano-like.

Withe the schedule Yankees vs Red Sox first and last series of the year it likely won’t matter. I mean it’s too early in April to get caught up in losing the RS (or winning) and by the end of September things will be decided anyway most likely.
    Nice scheduling MLB.

  86. Lance September 15th, 2009 at 2:38 pm

Very uneven schedule – Lots of rough patches bunched up together.

    - Only 7 April games at home as opposed to 15 on the road
    - 9 game East/West (OAK/LA/BAL) trip in May
    - 2 west coast trips in the span of 2 weeks (ARI/LAD then OAK/SEA)
    - 6 of our last 9 against Boston
    - Boston/Tampa/Angels/Texas as our first 4 series
    - 20 straight games in August

  87. Peter Abraham September 15th, 2009 at 2:38 pm

Holy cow, you guys are an angry bunch.

I posted about the double steal last night.

Mike Harkey? Yeah, the bullpen coaches make a huge difference. He answers the phone. Crucial job. Eiland is the pitching coach of all the pitchers, period. Harkey is on the staff because he is Joe’s buddy from way back.

As for Swish, it’s a fun little post. Jeez, just calm down. People just want to beat the fun out of everything. This blog used to be a fun part of my job and it’s half the time now it’s just tedious.

The Yankees are having a great season and have a fun team to watch. Stop being such cranks.

  90. JK September 15th, 2009 at 2:42 pm

Doesn’t the team that wins the WS get their home opener in prime time?

The Dodgers open the season in Pittsburgh. If they win the WS, do they change that schedule? Do they play a one game opener the night before then fly to PIT?

  91. sab September 15th, 2009 at 2:44 pm

what a stupid schedule, only 7 games at home in april (weather wise that might be the only positive). i hope we improve EVEN MORE in the offseason with a player addition or 2, get off to a hot start, and proceed to bury the everybody next year.

    =======================================================
great point – if the MLB schedule, who are obviously redsox fans screw the yankees then its only fair that they go out and get halladay, lackey and every decent reliever available to counter attack…how is playing in ny for 9 games then going to the west coast for 6 games then coming back to ny for 6 and then going back to the west coast for 6 games in late june early july fair!?!?

  92. Drive 4-5 September 15th, 2009 at 2:44 pm

    Pete,

Please ignore some of the comments that are made in your direction. I’ve spent more time on here today than usual and think the vast majority of the posts are simply people stating their opinion on the Yanks or baseball in general. The 2 or 3 that take shots at you are unfair and the posters are held in little regard by 90% of the regulars here. Believe me, we appreciate your work.

Jeter has dated some of the most beautiful women on this planet for the past decade. What’s wrong with him trying to find a girl that is more than a pretty face and nice body?

  94. Wave Your Hat September 15th, 2009 at 2:45 pm

The sense of the blog comments seems to be that the catcher’s throw was rushed and poor and Gardner stole the base.

From what I saw it looks like Gardner was going to be out by two feet and Figgins just missed the throw.

I liked winning but I wouldn’t have pinch run for Tex if I had to make the call. I agree with Pete’s post last night.

  95. fred September 15th, 2009 at 2:45 pm

ARod’s blonde in toronto was hotter than kate hudson. Whats he doin’? !

  96. Laura September 15th, 2009 at 2:47 pm

“Jeter has dated some of the most beautiful women on this planet for the past decade. What’s wrong with him trying to find a girl that is more than a pretty face and nice body?”

Aren’t you assuming that the hotties he dated before were only a pretty face and body?

  97. Darrin September 15th, 2009 at 2:49 pm

    JK:

You’re confusing the WS winner with the Super Bowl winner.

How brutal is that April? Open at Fenway, go to Tampa, home for the Angels, little break at home against Texas. Then a west coast trip? Thats bull

  99. Wave Your Hat September 15th, 2009 at 2:50 pm

I assume Jeter knows what he’s doing when it comes to women.

I’ll second guess his bunt last night, but never his choice of companions.

  100. Tex's friend September 15th, 2009 at 2:50 pm

henner we already determined the schedulers are trying to keep the yankees down.

as i said, look on the bright side. we suck in april every year, so we might as well get the tough teams out of the way.

  101. NYYanksFan September 15th, 2009 at 2:51 pm

“What’s wrong with him trying to find a girl that is more than a pretty face and nice body?”

How do you know she is more than that?

  102. rbj September 15th, 2009 at 2:51 pm

Um, Peter, I hate to nit pick, but I’m not sure that is the best photo of her. Could you please post more?

    Thanks.

  103. Devin September 15th, 2009 at 2:52 pm

What’s wrong with Minka? Just because she isin’t made of plastic?

  104. Doreen September 15th, 2009 at 2:53 pm

    Pete -

I wasn’t taking a shot at you by saying I’d be more interested in the coaches than the girls du jour. I just would be. I understand that on this blog, there are going to be some particulars I’m going to like more than others. I certainly appreciate your hard work here, and the eclectic nature of the topics you introduce, and I’ve said so in the past.

  105. Tankus September 15th, 2009 at 2:54 pm

She is more attractive than Kate Hudson. Give her that.

  106. Emobacca September 15th, 2009 at 2:55 pm

LOL at Minka Kelly being “average”. That post reeked of bitter and butthurt.

  107. Jeter's Edge - Pete, we need registered names and an edit button! September 15th, 2009 at 2:55 pm

Looks like she’s new to Gossip Girl because she had her own show on the CW last year called “Privileged.” And she is beautiful and very talented. I love it when faceless people on a blog or message board say “eh” to a famous girls looks even though that girl is WAY out of their league. Just because she is on TV is no reason to hate. Your just jealous of Nick because he is a goofy looking guy with a beautiful woman.

  108. CountryClub September 15th, 2009 at 2:55 pm

    Jerkface,

Minka is a pretty girl…not stunning…but pretty. However, she has an insane body. Jeter did just fine.

  109. Jerkface September 15th, 2009 at 2:56 pm

Not sure why you’re addressing that to me.

  110. Demo September 15th, 2009 at 2:57 pm

Hilarious how jealous some people are of ballplayers’ wives/girlfriends… get over it.

  111. CountryClub September 15th, 2009 at 2:59 pm

oh, sorry about that. You respnded to Laura’s post and I mistakenly attributed her post to you.

  112. 40 time September 15th, 2009 at 2:59 pm

    Just ignore the haters.

If Pete mentioned Jessica Alba’s or Kim Kardashian’s looks, the ladies here would insist they are nothing special…

  113. NYYROC September 15th, 2009 at 3:01 pm

Pete, Just want to thank you for all the great NYY coverage. Your blog is the best “1 stop shopping place” for all things Yankee. Whether it be opinion, stats/ facts or inside info, I feel like I know more about this team, thanks to you, than any NYY team I have ever followed, and I’ve been a fan for 50 years. Keep up the good work!

  114. Dassit September 15th, 2009 at 3:02 pm

    Minka’s fine, Joanne’s fine
    atta boys
    now back to baseball

  115. Laura September 15th, 2009 at 3:05 pm

“If Pete mentioned Jessica Alba’s or Kim Kardashian’s looks, the ladies here would insist they are nothing special…”

Wrong. Both of those women are head turners. As a woman who prefers men, that’s how I rate other women. If she walked past me on the street, is she pretty enough to make even me turn around and look at her. Alba? Yes. Minka? Not so much.

  116. Doreen September 15th, 2009 at 3:05 pm

Honestly, what struck me about Minka watching her in Jeter’s box with his parents last week, was what a “girl next door” type she seemed to be. I thought she seemed terrific. I have no idea what she’s really like, but she seems to be very comfortable about herself – whenever there are the rare pictures of her and Jeter doing things together, she’s in jeans and a pony tail. She strikes me as a very nice girl.

I liked Joanna Garcia on the “Reba” show and I thought she was really cute looking.

  117. Bronx Jeers September 15th, 2009 at 3:08 pm

“Mike Harkey? Yeah, the bullpen coaches make a huge difference. He answers the phone. Crucial job. ”

Still I bet you he makes a 6 figure salary doing just that.

Plus, he’s good for security if an idiot jumps into the pen. Like I said before, Harkey’s a mammoth of a man.

  118. NYYanksFan September 15th, 2009 at 3:11 pm

Very jealous. Not everyone can afford a good dentist, plastic surgeon and a $1000 haircut and dye job.

    Pete,

Thanks for the keeping the blog fun. Keep up the great work.

  120. ArtieA September 15th, 2009 at 3:17 pm

Pete, thank you for making this blog fun…and yes I wish I was Swish…maybe for a day or two!

  121. Josh September 15th, 2009 at 3:35 pm

She’s a pretty good actress for what it’s worth…”Reba”, “Privileged” and now “Gossip Girl”. Lucky Swisher I say.
    =============
Joanna seems to like to date athletes, Nick wouldn’t be the first…she used to date doubles star Bob Bryan.

  122. Josh September 15th, 2009 at 3:42 pm

Honestly one of the nicer celebs around if that counts for anything…

  123. Matty Viernes September 15th, 2009 at 3:51 pm

    Laura

Compared to Vanessa Minillo and Mariah, Minka is very attractive. I believe she’s also prettier than Biel, but probably #3 behind Alba and Scarlett. She looks like Alba’s sister.

Look, it’s less about looks and more about personality. I see Minka constantly chatting and smiling with Jeter’s mom. Considering how seriously Jeter cares about his parents, that probably scores a bazillion points for Minka.

Minka is not “average” looking. Sorry.

  124. Stateman52 September 15th, 2009 at 3:54 pm

Minka is just right for Swish, she is breathing.

  125. Karen September 15th, 2009 at 4:02 pm

Swish == one very hot dude.

  126. Karl W September 15th, 2009 at 4:02 pm

Can we have more pics of Joanna please.

  127. Chris September 15th, 2009 at 4:36 pm

The schedule is what it is. Good teams don’t worry who their opponents are. They make the adjustments and play ball.
81 home games and 81 road games ….. no exceptions.

  128. Rob September 15th, 2009 at 5:17 pm

my buddy and his wife and a couple other friends were at Tao in vegas together with swisher, (swish was dating a wife’s relative) and swish goes crazy buying all these bottles and everything and my buddy was like i can’t pay for this i’m ordering my own drinks and then at the end of the night swish wanted a few grand from him and was like dude i made 30 grand a year and you make 30 grand a game (more of course) and swish was having none of it and everyone just left him. Those were in his oakland days, i’m sure he has grown up.

  129. YankeesLuv September 15th, 2009 at 5:49 pm

She’s cute, good for Nick. I think she was engaged to Justin Timberlakes best friend Trace last year though.

  130. Tunnel Man September 15th, 2009 at 6:31 pm

    NYYanksFan-

are you saying Minka has plastic surgery and new teeth?

I must say, that photo you posted of Minka makes her look below average.

  131. ELKEAL487 September 15th, 2009 at 7:16 pm

WOW, now I know why Nick’s always got that sly grin on his face, Way to go Nick!

  132. Chico Harris September 15th, 2009 at 10:19 pm

“Meanwhile Wilson Betemit just asked out a waitress at a truck stop in Charlotte and she threw his tip back at him.”

Not as good as that about Betemit going through the drive-thru with the usherettes, but the spirit rocks.
