Our pals at The Big Lead have a post up about the romantic life of Nick Swisher.
The Swish dish is Joanna Garcia, who is on Gossip Girl. From what I am told, Nick is very happy. That’s not good news for you ladies out there who like bad haircuts and a high on-base percentage.
Meanwhile Wilson Betemit just asked out a waitress at a truck stop in Charlotte and she threw his tip back at him.
Swisher is 16th in OPS in the American League. 16th! Whoever told Brian Cashman to try and trade for Nick should get free dinners at NYY Steak for life.

I’ve been saying all year what a great trade that was. It’s crappy that Cashman gets killed for the bad moves he makes but gets absolutely no credit for great moves like that.

Swisher’s throw that sailed last night cost the Yankees a run.
His throws had been much better of late, but not that one.
A good throw and the runner was a dead duck at 2nd.

dont think this schedule is right. arent the dodgers supposed to be playing AT yankee stadium and not in LA?
The yankees have a brutal April and May next season.
April includes opening vs Sox and Rays, then Angels and Rangers then a westcoast trip to Angels.
May features 17 games in a row vs Bos, Det, Rays, Min, and Mets!?!?
WHO DESIGNS THIS SCHEDULE?!
And in July we have a westcoast trip right after a homestand with no day off.
Of course Boston gets Kansas City, Baltimore, and Toronto in April. And we get Dodgers and Arizona on the road, they get Colorado and San Fran.
They once again only get 1 road trip vs LAA, and only 3 westcoast trips counting interleague, we have 4/5
Fairly certain the schedulers live in Boston.

Just because he’s in the major leagues doesn’t mean Swisher has to date only swimsuit models or Playboy bunnies, even though by the numerous reports of other professional athletes’ spouses one would expect that to be standard issue when one signs a major league contract in a sport.

best trade in years…he is still young and under control…will never have a high batting average, but will hit 25+ homers, drive in 85+ runs and have a OBP of .370+ not bad at all

Houston somehow found their way onto our schedule. So did the Phillies even though we played them last year.
These interleague schedules are just strange.
i do think this schedule is wrong, because last year they announced the dodgers would be coming to yankee stadium in interleague.

No knock on Jones’ work – she’s fine – but the Yankees certainly judged her on her looks: why do you think Waldman got the boot?
Waldman is a much better baseball analyst that Jones, but she didn’t have the “eye candy” factor, and the broadcast is less rich for it. Jones is much more of a football person, while Waldman has been in baseball for years and has all sorts of contacts, etc.
You might say the sound bites nature of the pre and postgame don’t allow for nuanced stuff like Waldman’s radio spot, but she still brings a better knowledge and more enlightened questioning. I know Jones gets her cues from YES, but a more informed reporter is a more informed reporter, regardless.
I wish they never canceled her other tv show Privileged. It was a cute show

Kepner has a good blog post about Garcia, er, I mean the double steal. He asks a good question, did you like the move and how do you feel about Tex being lifted when he was killing the Angels? Would you want to see the move in the postseason?
Thoughts are mixed, but because it worked out you gotta love the move.

Supposedly, Girardi put Gardner in to steal, not pinch run. And also the double steal was not called. If so, then Alex did a good job following BG with his eyes. Of course the errant throw helped him “land” at third, too!
The point was brought by randy and Doreen earlier. A lot of basestealing success comes from the mere threat or act of stealing. Very difficult to make the perfect throw. And as I said, you can’t throw 2 guys out at the same time. Look out for any combo that involves Jeter or Alex with Brett Gardner as the lead runner.
I thought I read somewhere that the schedules were computer generated of some sort. Not sure how accurate that can be though.

Harkey was interviewed by Jones recently, and he had a lot to say.
How about a piece on him? He is sort of the invisible man to many people.
Oh, and I like the fact that Girardi lifted Tex. Of course you lose his glove and bat, but at this point of the season the players are put on notice. It’s all about giving your team the best chance to win. And a pinch runner in that situation not only was the best chance, but gave us the win, too.

that’s a great idea. in fact, all of the Yankees coaches this season are a bit of an unknown, at least to me. I heard them referred to as the “no-name” coaches. They would certainly make a more interesting story to me than the latest girlfriend du jour.

Boston did their two left coast trips in just over a month too. Just a different month. They were done with the west coast in mid May.
look closer at the proposed 2010 schedule for the Yanks:
only 3 games in Anaheim.
that should quell some of the angst, no?
SO we begin the season with a 7 day road trip and end the season with a 6 day. Nice. I hope this isn’t set in stone. Total BS!

I think so, I rarely second-guess Girardi. If Gardner’s thrown out (good chance he’s not), then Alex is in scoring position. This is one of those 4th and inches situation, but not as costly if it doesn’t work out because we’re at home.

The other night I “wandered” into the bleachers and had a good view of the Yanks pen. I’ll say this about Harkey….he’s a big…big dude.
Checking him out…couple of facts.
He was a 1st round pick in 1987, 4th overall. He had a pretty good year in 1990 going 12-6 with a 3.26 ERA
In 1992 in ERA+ was 191 which is Mariano-like.

Withe the schedule Yankees vs Red Sox first and last series of the year it likely won’t matter. I mean it’s too early in April to get caught up in losing the RS (or winning) and by the end of September things will be decided anyway most likely.

Very uneven schedule – Lots of rough patches bunched up together.
- Only 7 April games at home as opposed to 15 on the road
- 9 game East/West (OAK/LA/BAL) trip in May
- 2 west coast trips in the span of 2 weeks (ARI/LAD then OAK/SEA)
- 6 of our last 9 against Boston
- Boston/Tampa/Angels/Texas as our first 4 series
- 20 straight games in August

Mike Harkey? Yeah, the bullpen coaches make a huge difference. He answers the phone. Crucial job. Eiland is the pitching coach of all the pitchers, period. Harkey is on the staff because he is Joe’s buddy from way back.
As for Swish, it’s a fun little post. Jeez, just calm down. People just want to beat the fun out of everything. This blog used to be a fun part of my job and it’s half the time now it’s just tedious.
The Yankees are having a great season and have a fun team to watch. Stop being such cranks.

great point – if the MLB schedule, who are obviously redsox fans screw the yankees then its only fair that they go out and get halladay, lackey and every decent reliever available to counter attack…how is playing in ny for 9 games then going to the west coast for 6 games then coming back to ny for 6 and then going back to the west coast for 6 games in late june early july fair!?!?

I’ve spent more time on here today than usual and think the vast majority of the posts are simply people stating their opinion on the Yanks or baseball in general. The 2 or 3 that take shots at you are unfair and the posters are held in little regard by 90% of the regulars here. Believe me, we appreciate your work.

The sense of the blog comments seems to be that the catcher’s throw was rushed and poor and Gardner stole the base.
From what I saw it looks like Gardner was going to be out by two feet and Figgins just missed the throw.
I liked winning but I wouldn’t have pinch run for Tex if I had to make the call. I agree with Pete’s post last night.

Wrong. Both of those women are head turners. As a woman who prefers men, that’s how I rate other women. If she walked past me on the street, is she pretty enough to make even me turn around and look at her. Alba? Yes. Minka? Not so much.
Honestly, what struck me about Minka watching her in Jeter’s box with his parents last week, was what a “girl next door” type she seemed to be. I thought she seemed terrific. I have no idea what she’s really like, but she seems to be very comfortable about herself – whenever there are the rare pictures of her and Jeter doing things together, she’s in jeans and a pony tail. She strikes me as a very nice girl.

Compared to Vanessa Minillo and Mariah, Minka is very attractive. I believe she’s also prettier than Biel, but probably #3 behind Alba and Scarlett. She looks like Alba’s sister.
Look, it’s less about looks and more about personality. I see Minka constantly chatting and smiling with Jeter’s mom. Considering how seriously Jeter cares about his parents, that probably scores a bazillion points for Minka.

my buddy and his wife and a couple other friends were at Tao in vegas together with swisher, (swish was dating a wife’s relative) and swish goes crazy buying all these bottles and everything and my buddy was like i can’t pay for this i’m ordering my own drinks and then at the end of the night swish wanted a few grand from him and was like dude i made 30 grand a year and you make 30 grand a game (more of course) and swish was having none of it and everyone just left him. Those were in his oakland days, i’m sure he has grown up.
She’s cute, good for Nick. I think she was engaged to Justin Timberlakes best friend Trace last year though.
