Tentative 2010 schedule released

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Sep 15, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees would open up in Boston
according to the tentative schedule released by MLB.

Why do two cold-weather teams play each other in the first week of the season? The Yankees also close with the Red Sox.

I’m sure this will be interpreted as some sort of conspiracy against the Yankees orchestrated by ESPN, John Henry and Peter Gammons. But in the end, schedules usually balance out one way or another.

Unless you know for sure how how good or bad every team will be in 2010, there is not much sense complaining about it.

Worry about next year when it comes. Enjoy 2009, it’s pretty special.

And think about this: You the Red Sox are thrilled to open and close with the Yankees? I’m guessing not. Location with those teams usually doesn’t much matter.

    Money. That’s why.

  2. L to the 2nd September 15th, 2009 at 3:01 pm

The Yankess have been beginning & ending the season both on the road lately.

    What’s up with that?

  3. Emobacca September 15th, 2009 at 3:02 pm

The Yankees would also end the season in Fenway

  4. Ben September 15th, 2009 at 3:05 pm

I don’t like how the Yankees have to open the season on the road two years in a row. Also, the first half of the season is brutal, but the number of home games in August should be advantageous down the stretch.

  5. RC 16 September 15th, 2009 at 3:07 pm

We get to play the Astros in interleague, while the Sox have to play the Giants/Rockies.

Sox have 10 with the Angels, we have 9.

    These things even out.

  6. vtred September 15th, 2009 at 3:07 pm

We play 20 straight games in August.

  7. L to the 2nd September 15th, 2009 at 3:08 pm

So they begin and end the year at Boston?

    Who made this schedule, NESPN?

  8. CountryClub September 15th, 2009 at 3:09 pm

Anyone know why they’re playing the Phillies again this year? I thought it was a 3 yr rotating schedule with the NL.

  9. Matt (NYY fan in Boston) September 15th, 2009 at 3:09 pm

Pete, I completely agree with you about this season though. Why focus on the 2010 schedule when the 2009 season is still going on and still going strong? Take it slow and take it easy; worry about 2010 after 2009.

  10. Kenny F September 15th, 2009 at 3:09 pm

A peak at the Red Sox schedule shows a mid-September west coast trip similar to the one the Yanks have this year.

  11. Kenny F September 15th, 2009 at 3:10 pm

Of course, I meant to say ‘peek’.

  12. mark September 15th, 2009 at 3:11 pm

moreover, they play at home versus the Angels and Texas in April. why not have those as road games in April?

  13. CountryClub September 15th, 2009 at 3:14 pm

Mark, they do play the Angles on the road in April. They play the Angels 6 times during the first 3 weeks of the season

  14. Bronx Jeers September 15th, 2009 at 3:14 pm

Hey, they got Arizona and the Dodgers as their away interleague series’.

  15. JGS September 15th, 2009 at 3:14 pm

that’s a rough April. At least they are basically done with the Angels after that

  16. fred September 15th, 2009 at 3:14 pm

who are the free agents out there Yanks could be interested in to help us hammer the rest of the league next year? Halladay, Bay?

  17. CountryClub September 15th, 2009 at 3:15 pm

The good news is that the last 3 games of the year almost never matter. Of course there are exceptions, but usually things are decided by then.

  18. Frank September 15th, 2009 at 3:15 pm

I agree with Mike from Montclair… the manager worries me in October.

  19. Tex's friend September 15th, 2009 at 3:15 pm

home vs. away does matter to boston and the yankees. home games are naturally more of an advantage but the red sox hitters numbers at home are night and day vs. the road.

  20. Tex's friend September 15th, 2009 at 3:17 pm

    Halladay, Bay?

NO Bay. he is hitting .250… AT FENWAY.

Halladay has also showed he cannot beat Boston anymore.

Might as well go try to trade for Greinke or something like that.

  21. Joe from Long Island September 15th, 2009 at 3:17 pm

I thought the schedule was made by computer? If so, I would think the issue of warm weather ballparks could be factored into the software. The catch is that the northeast has a large density of baseball fans, just up and down the eastern seaboard, from Washington to Boston. That’s a lot of fan interest to not ignore.

Oh, and, Pete, uh….you left out the shot of a calendar girl. (jk) :)

  22. Laura September 15th, 2009 at 3:17 pm

I’m not going to get myself all worked up over 2010 when 2009 isn’t finished. Let’s win the 2009 World Series; then we can whine about the 2010 Schedule.

  23. Lance September 15th, 2009 at 3:18 pm

    Yanks interleague

    Home – Mets, Phillies, Astros
    Away – Mets, D’Backs, Dodgers

    Sox interleague

    Home – Phillies, D’Backs, Dodgers
Away – Phillies, San Francisco, Colorado

  24. pat September 15th, 2009 at 3:18 pm

Tex coming on with Francesa at 3:25

  25. Jon September 15th, 2009 at 3:18 pm

My bigger question is….7!! home games in April?? That’s simply ridiculous.

  26. Joe September 15th, 2009 at 3:20 pm

Anyone know who’s pitching tomorrow night?

  27. ADam September 15th, 2009 at 3:21 pm

“I’m sure this will be interpreted as some sort of conspiracy against the Yankees orchestrated by ESPN, John Henry and Peter Gammons. But in the end, schedules usually balance out one way or another.”

Pete, Don’t forget Bud Selig, whose in bed with Henry….

  28. Stultus Magnus September 15th, 2009 at 3:21 pm

    HAL created the schedule.

    HAL’s a Sox fan.

Yank fans should “take a stress pill, and think things over”

  29. Jerkface September 15th, 2009 at 3:22 pm

Actually I am wrong, they did it until 2004:

One of baseball’s longest streaks comes to an end in January when Major League Baseball puts the finishing touches on the 2005 schedule.

A small company outside Pittsburgh, the Sports Scheduling Group, was selected last month to complete the 2005 schedule, unseating the husband-and-wife team of Henry and Holly Stephenson, who have been doing it for 24 years.

Each year, MLB accepts competing scheduling proposals from outside groups. The Sports Scheduling Group won the contract in part because it did a better job of avoiding “semi-repeaters,” in which the same teams play back-to-back series at home and then away, said Katy Feeney, MLB senior vice president of scheduling.

  30. Rishi September 15th, 2009 at 3:23 pm

so I am going to a Phillies game tonight (work trip)– the seats are worse than where I sat at Yankee Stadium last night and cost over $10 more.

    Ridiculous

  31. Stultus Magnus September 15th, 2009 at 3:23 pm

    Jerkface,

    Link please…

  32. Doreen September 15th, 2009 at 3:23 pm

Why do they publish a schedule for next season now?

  33. Stultus Magnus September 15th, 2009 at 3:23 pm

    Never mind

  34. Stultus Magnus September 15th, 2009 at 3:24 pm

“Each year, MLB accepts competing scheduling proposals from outside groups.”

HAL won this year…for next year’s schedule, that is.

  35. SJ44 September 15th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

What the heck has been going on here the past few days?

Has everybody taken whining and crying pills?

Cry about the schedule, blog posts, etc.

Can’t folks just chill the $&$$@ out and enjoy the season?

I figured today folks would be happy they beat the Angels last night. Silly me, the place has turned into a crybaby fest.

Who cares about the 2010 schedule?

Those of you who are already predicting the outcome of 2010 games have been wrong about 2009 games all season.

Why do you think we care about your 2010 predictions.

I’d hate to think what this place would be like if the Yankees weren’t 40 games over .500.

  36. Drive 4-5 September 15th, 2009 at 3:26 pm

Playing baseball outdoors in New England on April 5 is plain stupid. There’s no conspiracy here, just incompetence.

I’m the president of a baseball league in MA and we don’t consider playing before the 3rd week in April. That’s the earliest date that we can be reasonably comfortable of not having to deal with snow. Personally, I’m happy to see the Yanks playing in St Pete the first weekend in April. I may just have to pay a visit to some family down there.

  37. Jerkface September 15th, 2009 at 3:27 pm

Who cares about the 2010 schedule?

Who cares about the games right now? The yankees are going to the playoffs, I just enjoy watching the games as tune ups now. Gotta talk about something. The yankees are so good they have taken most discussion out of topic because they are so far ahead.

  38. ANSKY September 15th, 2009 at 3:28 pm

I kinda liked Buck Showalter’s idea of a truly balanced schedule void of rivalry saturation. Makes the fewer games played between those teams more important. Ples, EVERY team can reap the $$$ benefit of playing against both NY and Boston. More so, I liked the Buckster’s one-league format, uniform DH rule (I say keep it) and the revised playoff format options (I say 4 division winners and the 4 next best records).

How would they deal with the union and contracting two teams? I think adding two roster spots for each remaining team would more than cover the 50 lost ML roster spots for the players union’s satisfaction. Some coaches & managers might be stiffed though.

How to decide who to contract? I dunno … some kind of composite of history, profitability, performance, ticket sales and owner’s votes.

Fan votes would be ridiculous unless it was limited to a handful of teams being considered for contraction. I could see Sox fans stuffing the on-line ballot box in an attempt to wipe the Yanks from existence and vice versa.

  39. Tex's friend September 15th, 2009 at 3:29 pm

yankees did have a great win last night. glad phil managed to keep his composure after loading the bases, although he was really getting squeezed.

  40. L to the 2nd September 15th, 2009 at 3:29 pm

The Twins open up their new outdoor stadium on April 12 – against BOS.

Wonder how many layers of Under Armour they’ll need?

  41. CountryClub September 15th, 2009 at 3:30 pm

People are talking about the 2010 schedule because there’s really nothing else to talk about for the next 3 weeks.

  42. Tex's friend September 15th, 2009 at 3:30 pm

Both teams has valid beef with the homeplate ump last night, to be fair. but because the umps sucked for both teams doesnt make it right. i.e. Matsui’s last AB. that slider way off the plate called a strike and the ugly swing on strike three because it was the same pitch.

  43. sara September 15th, 2009 at 3:31 pm

Better opening day would be Boston at our place so they could see the Yanks get their 2009 World Series rings!

  44. Tex's friend September 15th, 2009 at 3:31 pm

it was a brilliant idea for the twins to have a new stadium without some version of a roof. yikes.

  45. Jeter's Edge - Pete, we need registered names and an edit button! September 15th, 2009 at 3:32 pm

HAHA, nice, SJ returns to put the fools in their place!

SJ, you missed the 1,000,000 post yesterday! I though for sure you at a shot at winning but you weren’t even around!

“Who cares about the games right now? The yankees are going to the playoffs, I just enjoy watching the games as tune ups now. Gotta talk about something. The yankees are so good they have taken most discussion out of topic because they are so far ahead.”

Exactly. Talking about a 2010 schedule is more eventful than talking about meaningless games.

Oh wait… I forgot tonight is a must win!

  47. Tex's friend September 15th, 2009 at 3:32 pm

Better opening day would be Boston at our place so they could see the Yanks get their 2009 World Series rings!

    ____

Yankees should try to get the ring presentation (because they ARE going to win) moved to opening night AT Fenway.

  48. ANSKY September 15th, 2009 at 3:33 pm

Of course you match up the schedule so all the teams vulnerable to bad weather play either in the south or in covered stadiums during April.

Just talking hypothetically … the season at hand is all that REALLY matters, as has been pointed out.

  49. Stultus Magnus September 15th, 2009 at 3:35 pm

I usually have a problem with SJ’s “stop the whining” posts, but I have to agree. I just don’t come around here as often. I mean, people were freaking mad at Hughes last night. It’s better to just watch the games and enjoy the summer.

The Yanks are doing well, enjoy some baseball, try not to get worked up.

  50. Drive 4-5 September 15th, 2009 at 3:37 pm

Either I missed something or have gotten very good at ignoring negative posts. I thought the comments about last night’s win were overwhelmingly positive. I thought the discussion about the merits of Jeter bunting last night and the MVP race were mostly respectful. I didnt pick up on that much negavitiy here today. I guess it’s what you make it.

  51. sara September 15th, 2009 at 3:45 pm

    Tex…I agree!

  52. Stateman52 September 15th, 2009 at 3:53 pm

Yanks play Angels in April also, so look for a slow start and a fast finish. Yanks-99-63 in 2010.

  53. Peter R September 15th, 2009 at 3:53 pm

Did we even play the Twins or Indians or Royals this year? I feel like we have played the friggin Mets more than any of these teams and the Mets are in the other damn league! I know the Royals are coming up but seriously we playing Toronto AGAIN? lol

  54. CS September 15th, 2009 at 3:55 pm

Didn’t we go to L.A. a few years ago? (I seem to recall Gagne getting a strike 3 call on Matsui that was clearly high & outside to end a close one.) Doesn’t MLB see the drama a Torre return to the Bronx would create…ratings gold (assuming they’re both not in the Series this year).

    ————————————————————

The Twins played without a dome for 21 years. They’ll survive. How the fans accept it is their problem. As long as the mosquitos don’t eat them alive from late May until September, they’ll be happy.

  56. Tom B September 15th, 2009 at 4:05 pm

pete i think you owe that guy an apology since you clearly didn’t even know how the schedules are made.

wasting opening day money on a sox yanks game is an extremely stupid move by MLB. how much money did we make teams this season selling out their opening day games?

  57. jimmy1138 September 15th, 2009 at 4:08 pm

3rd time in 6 years the Yankees finish at Boston. 4th year in a row the Yankees finish on the road.
And Pete – “the computer does that” doesn’t count b/c there are always some guys who write those computer programs.

  58. Bryan V September 15th, 2009 at 4:13 pm

Just win. We have to play the Sox, Rays, and Angels anyway. And, you won’t believe this, but a few times we have to play those teams away from Yankee Stadium.

So…just win. Beat Boston to open the season, and beat them again to end the season. Oh…have mercy!

  59. islesfan September 15th, 2009 at 4:39 pm

I think the MLB schedule maker has an office in Fenway Park, right next to Mitchell’s.

  60. The Damon-ator September 15th, 2009 at 4:42 pm

what the f? they played in LA last time, LA should be coming out to NY. A Torre homecoming would rock. I’m sick of this randomness, having the Sox-Yankees rivalry shoved down my throat all the time with the opening and closing v Boston, and the idiocy that goes into the schedule making (like not sending cold weather teams to warm weather cities etc. I bet MLB is so stupid they’ve got the dome teams in warm weather cities while most of the cold weather parks are booked, just like they’ve done in the past. Stupid.

  61. Rob September 15th, 2009 at 4:51 pm

Has anyone ever noticed that the yankees always make one more west coast trip than the sox every year. Look it up.

  62. Rob September 15th, 2009 at 5:04 pm

    Trips to the west coast

    2009
Sox – 2 last being in May
    Yanks – 3, all three after july4th

    2008
Sox – 3 – sox opened there though so not reall a trip
    Yanks – 3

    2007
    Sox – 3
    Yanks – 4

i was wrong thinking it was 3 straight years but still, things like that plus the year where The Boss called out John Harrington for giving the yanks the cubs and cardinals and the sox the pirates and brewers has always made me suspicious.

  63. matthew frags September 15th, 2009 at 5:44 pm

    Pete,

You wrote: “I’m sure this will be interpreted as some sort of conspiracy against the Yankees orchestrated by ESPN, John Henry and Peter Gammons. But in the end, schedules usually balance out one way or another.”

Well, it seems odd that 2010 will be the SIXTH consecutive year the Red Sox end the season playing in Fenway; and it’ll also be the SIXTH time in 7 years the Yanks finish the season playing on the road.

Toss in the fact NY finished the 2005, 2008 (and now 2010) seasons playing in BOS.

Toss in the fact the Mets got to close 2008 playing in SHEA while NY had to close the year playing on the road (saying farewell to their stadium a week earlier).

Well, when does it balance out? Over a 50 year period?

The fact is, since 2004, Red Sox have been given a clear advantage playing their final games at home, while NY has been on the road. Luckily, they never too advantage of this (we even clinched the DIV in BOS in 2005).

Still, let’s see BOS close 2011 in NY…. at least have them on the road for once!

  64. Johnny D. September 15th, 2009 at 6:01 pm

    Sweet.

  65. tony September 15th, 2009 at 7:41 pm

those interleague games are messed up Philadelphia, Arizona, and Houston plus the mets for 6 games? don’t they normally play all the teams from one division?

  66. AJW September 16th, 2009 at 9:16 am

I guess MLB hasn’t learned to start the AL Eest teams on the West Coast in the beginning of the year. Doesn’t faze me at all when we know who is running the show. Also, the All-Star Game should not determine home field advantage in the World Series. You know what should: interleague play. That’s more of a sample. Whichever team that goes to the Series has the better interleague record should get home field advantage. It’s all about money folks.

  67. good times, bad times you know I've had my share September 16th, 2009 at 1:10 pm

    weird, wacky stuff that schedule
