Do or die for Scranton tonight
The SWB Yankees are down 0-2 in the best-of-three International League finals. But the final three games are home and they’re up 2-0 on Durham so far tonight.
Ivan Nova is pitching and Cody Ransom has two RBI.
You can follow along here. And Chad Jennings has his blog.

Pete this remids me of the Entourage episode where Ari gets the big job offer and thinks about leaving VInce. So sad.
Wow I’m totally bummed.
Just read the announcement…I’m thrilled for you Pete! Good luck and congrats. The season won’t be the same with out you!
September 17th, 2009 at 8:38 pm
Bottom of the 6th inning. Scranton leads 2-0 over Durham.
Nova: 6 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts.
Jackson is 1-2 with a run scored, 1 stolen base, 1 strikeout, 1 walk.
Miranda is 1-2 with a run scored and a triple.
Ransom is 1-2 with a single, a sac fly, a strikeout and 2 RBI.
I thought Kendry Morales was good?
He looks pretty stinky against the Sox.
Heading into the top of the 7th inning, Scranton still leads, 2-0.
Ransom!
Did you take the job offer so that no one would get the millionth post so there would be no dinner or whatever the prize was?
Pete this is painful man, really painful. dude you better come back tomorrow and tell me this was joke. I mean I can’t blame you for doing it but man, this is gonna stink. I SWEAR TO GOD BETWEEN FACEBOOK AND THIS BLOG GOES %90 OF MY DAY. Just the thought of you pulling for those stinking red sox is just ridiculous.
Is Ivan Nova a serious prospect or just a filler they put in Scranton that is on a good streak?
Peter,
When print news completely goes belly-up in the Northeast, you should seriously consider getting a few of your favorite beat writers together and starting a website about NY Sports. Get a Mets guy, a Yankees guy, a Jets guy and a Giants guy. Hell, if you can find a Knicks guy, bring him along too. People would pay for this site. I know that for a fact.
Ivan Nova is rolling against the Rays AAA team. 7 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts. 89 ground outs, 7 fly outs, 84 pitches, 53 strikes, 31 balls.
***9 ground outs***
I thought espn or SI would be Pete’s next stop. We’d all follow him there like, well like Abraham.
Azaz I agree, feel like fake plastic trees should be playing in the background.
Peteabe, I am devastated but can’t help but be proud of you and happy for your family. Your success is really going to change a lot of people’s daily routine around here.

————————————————————
actually, Nova is a pretty good young pitcher. 22 years old. Spectacular, no, but, he’s been rushed a bit, perhaps.
http://www.baseball-reference......211;001iva
I KNOW he grew up a Sox fan. He admits it. That does not mean that he’s secretly rooted for utter failure by the Yankees while covering them, though.

Joe,
What do you do on facebook? I always thought it was kinda boring, cuz people rarely update their pages/walls.
The ‘It is high…’ boys have taken this hard:
http://johnsterling.blogspot.c.....aitor.html
Izturis? Why not put Napoli in? Doesn’t he love the monster?
AWWWW. Tie score.
Bottom of the 7th inning, Jackson is 1-2 with 2 walks (always encouraging)
This is no surprise. Pete grew up a Red Sox fan and always has been one.
There is a link I can provide to prove it.
————————-
it’s irrelevant, Jim. what more could we have asked from Pete? He’s been a diligent posting machine with reliable information and a wry sense of humor.
any replacement is going to be ersatz, at best.
Holy crap, Trisha. My feed must be way behind yours. He hadn’t even thrown the pitch when you posted that:)
If Scranton is in the play offs why is their best hitter sitting on the bench in the Bronx? He could of came up after the play offs it’s not like he plays anyway.
haahahahahahhahahhahahahahhahahahahhahahahha
Varitek let an inning ending strike three pass between his legs, and the Halos tied it up.
Way to go, Captain.
Angels fans shouldn’t get too excited. They will give back the run immediately in the bottom of the inning.
rconn – I don’t know how that happened because it seems to have just happened. I can’t figure that out!
Thanks for that, trisha! Please post good news only.
Who gives a flying crap about what team someone rooted for while growing up?
Alliances change depending on who signs your paycheck. It happens all the time.
Most players aren’t playing for the team they rooted for as a kid.
Phil Hughes was a Sox fan growing up, too. Does that mean if and when he pitches poorly against them that he’s doing so intentionally?
Get your heads out of your arses and get a clue.
This is a business and changing alliances is the nature of the business.
They owed it to Aybar to call that pitch a ball.
mel, I hope I have nothing but good news to report for the rest of the night!
GO ANGELS!!!
Honestly Jim Pir-one… you are borderline intolerable! Shush!
Nova is in trouble in the top of the 8th inning. No outs, only his 2nd walk of the night and a bloop single. Kroenke now pitching.
Pete:
AlbanyYank has a good idea.
“When print news completely goes belly-up in the Northeast, you should seriously consider getting a few of your favorite beat writers together and starting a website about NY Sports.”
There’s a real business model here. You should consider it. Adding your network to the quality regulars you have on this blog could make for an interactive, real time NY sports nexus that no other outlet could match. I would pay for a service like that.
fair enough, Jim. nice post, btw.
Lowell cries about a strike. After getting yesterday’s game on a silver platter…he should shut up.
If there is any kind of justice in life, the Angels will win this game.
Double steal and a single ties up the game. Let’s go, Scranton.
Final line for Nova. 7 innings, 2 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts.
Kroenke gets two popups and a 2 strike 2 run single to John Rodriguez.. 2-2 tie.

Im aware. All I said was Pete is a Red Sox fan. That’s why it’s no surprise that he is going to cover them.
However, his work is beyond the realm of reality, that’s how good his coverage of the Yankees is.
I cannot imagine anyone else coming in and doing anything close to what he’s done.
We’ll be lucky to get 2 posts a day from anyone else or news about a player within 3 days of the news being new.
————
I doubt Pete’s decision to work for the Globe stemmed from his love of a team. It is the Boston Globe, Jim. Growing up in Massachusetts, I am sure people in the field of professional writing dream of working for a paper like that.
Kroenke/Stewart have allowed three stolen bases in the inning, and it’s killed them.
mel, is the Scranton game televised?
I’m following on gameday.
GB7 might know.
I wonder if Pete still gets his BBWAA AL-MVP vote this year?
It’s two writers from each city.
How about it Pete?
Jim, I take it you are a friend of Pete’s? That must be how you know why he made the decisions he made. Regardless, good luck to him. It’s hard being away from family.
It’s on MILBTV.com on video and radio feeds.
Brett Tomko out with nerve damage in arm and also expecting twins in the next few days. So good luck to him with that.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....BHeadlines
Pedroia is a pain, i repeat, a pain in the butt. Now the redsox have a man on first with two outs. This is were they do the most damage. with tow outs.
Umm, it’s all good Benny.
“Brett Tomko out with nerve damage in arm”
hopefully it’s not his painting arm!
I still wonder if his painting of Hughes helped turn young Phil’s career around.
Is it too late to have him sketch Mitre and Bruney?
It will be a pleasure to see the Sux have to go on the road now, where they have a record under 500.
GO EVERYONE ELSE!!!
Pete,
Good for you but please dont be disingenuous about your move. You have hit the big time (in your world) going to the globe from where you are now and I’m sure you are psyched…and justifiably so. But please don’t talk about how you want to be close to your family and how tough of a decision this is. It is a no-brainer decision from a career perspective. Of course you would say yes. These folks are not dumb.
I read from time to time and , though I’ve never commented, it has been fascinating to watch the commenters on this blog propel you to the next level. Though you have done a decent blog, I believe its success is primarily a result of great Yankees fans participating so enthusiastically because they finally have a workable forum to exchange ideas.
So best of luck to you, but if you are covering the Sox in two weeks, you should do the right thing and close down shop now. Otherwise, this is all a little silly.
Pete-
This is kind of how it felt the day I read Boomer Wells signed with the Sox. I imagine it’s how Sox fans felt when they read Johnny Damon was heading to New York.
As someone who spends most of his day-job sorting through horrible writing, it has always been refreshing to take a break and read yours. You’ve kept us informed and often chuckling at the same time.
Best wishes, bring some earplugs to drown out Youkilis’ whining, and try not to trip over Pedroia.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I wouldn’t stop being a Yankee fan if I became a beat writer for ANY team. Obviously, you have to keep it out of your writing, but I’d still root for the Yankees.
The Yankees never signed his paycheck and I don’t know how writers get paid, but I don’t see how the Yankees doing well would be a huge factor in getting paid.
The Phil Hughes example doesn’t make any sense. Phil Hughes IS paid by the Yankees and his pay IS based on whether he performs well as a Yankee. There is no relationship between the two.
1. Congratulations.
2. Morales has had a fine year but his strikeout to walk ratio isn’t good (102/39). He likes to swing the bat and will chase.
Scranton has loaded the bases on walks with two outs in the bottom of the 8th inning. 2-2 score.
I know trish, I’m just having a little fun.
4-3 angels.. finally
Wagner being Wagner.
Life is good.
Come on Angels, beat the Saux tonight. You can do it!
Wagner. He has made a difference!!
The Angels bullpen will get another chance to blow a game….
And by the way, I’m not saying that Abraham was/is a Red Sox fan. And, if he was/is a Red Sox fan, he is/was still the best Yankee beat writer and blogger.
All I’m saying is that there is no way I would stop being a Yankee fan just because I was a writer.
Kevin Russo flies out to right field for the 3rd out. 9th inning coming up.
Interesting.
The book says in a tie game, put your closer in the 9th when you’re at home.
Boston didn’t do that. Rather, Tito teh Great didn’t do that.
Tito put in Wagner and he’s choking.
Halos just scored and they have a runner on 2nd.
of course, it doesn’t matter, the ‘roid sox lovin’ media will never hold Tito to account for going against the book.
I think you mean the umps will get another chance to hand the Sux the game. Actually I am thinking you are going to see the opposite tonight. It seems that the home plate ump is going out of his way to be kind to the Angels, with a little help from the 1B ump…
Fuentes facing the same hitters he faces yesterday… Bay, Lowell, Ortiz to start.
And by the way, I’m not saying that he was/is a Red Sox fan. And, if he was/is a Red Sox fan, he is/was still the best Yankee beat writer and blogger.
All I’m saying is that there is no way I would stop being a Yankee fan just because I was a writer. Why would you?
How can anyone concentrate on baseball when Pete announced he is leaving? Who cares about the Sux/Angels game? That result will be forgotten tomorrow whereas Pete’s absence will be felt for months and years on this blog.
Bay, Ortiz, Lowell?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....re=related
Boy Pete would really love covering the Angels. They bunt with one out AND two outs. Jeesh…
Meanwhile, Angels up 1 going to the bottom of the ninth. Angels sure to win, right?
Brian Fuentes, come on down? Maybe not
Sort of related to the is he a Red Sox fan or not question, do they let Wagner come out to Enter Sandman in Boston? Because I couldn’t imagine anyone in Fenway liking that song, regardless of how much they like Metallica.
Flippin YAY! One down.
Let the Fuentes roller coaster begin.

The sun will come out tomorrow!
Tomorrow!
Betcha bottom that tomorrow, they’re be sun!
Carl D., actually this is a way to take our minds off it.
pete i hope you continue to refer to pedroia as the keebler elf, goof luck
good luck*
Don’t you just hate it when the sac bunt doesn’t work?
Durham has a runner on first and one out.
“The book says in a tie game, put your closer in the 9th when you’re at home.”
Don’t forget that Papelbon had a sore back and was unavailable last night. Even though it was reported that he was available tonight, with Boston safely in the playoffs at this point maybe Francona just figured to give him an extra day.
Some guy named Kevin Jespen is trying to get the save.
Way to show confidence in your closer who leads the AL in saves, Socscia.
you know when we’ll really find out how Pete’s beat writer pals feel about his move to Boston?
During his first AB in the Boston/NY media baseball game!
Kroenke ennds the inning with a DP grounder. Scranton has the 2-3-4 batters leading off the 9th.
hey does anybdy think that because of some of the idiot comments pete got frustrated since he always said that he was tired of “babysitting”. I definitely think that factored into his decision.
Wow.
Jim I’m just thinking that they aren’t going to hand the Sux the game in the 9th.
Congrats Pete. We’re all disappointed and we all hate the Red Sox, but the Globe is a great place for talent and they just got one of the most talented beat writers out there.
If anyone thinks that Pete actually roots for the Yankees or Red Sox, you seriously don’t understand how journalism works.
Azaz September 17th, 2009 at 9:44 pm

=================================
you should see the idiotic comments on Boston blogs, includng the Globe’s site.
As hard as New Yorkers are, we pale in comparison to the Red Sox Nation and the big giant chip on their shoulder.
LoHud should hire chad jennings and move him up from scranton, then scranton can hire mike ashmore…
Come on baseball gods. Throw that damned ball in there for Fuentes. Think Rick Reed and make things right!
For those that missed the perfect game action in Philly the other night. Click on the big video and watch the little beauty in the pink hat. What a little doll. This is baseball as it’s meant to be.

You’ve never seen Peter Gammons?
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So the Sux would have lost 2 out of 3 if it weren’t for that fat blind turd Rick Reed.
I just hope Pete doesn’t have to do weekly calls on weei
Austin Jackson singles with one out. Miranda batting.
sox lose..
DT,
Just caught this one. Nice!
“hopefully it’s not his painting arm!”
HAHAHAHAHA the Angels win. I guess the umpires didn’t get the graft tonight to help Boston get the win.
7 games up. How do you babies feel now?
Update the magic number Pete!
congratulations on the Halos defeating the “Invincible” John Beckett.
Angels 4-3 final
i never understood why being a beat writer wont allow you to ba a fan of a team?
you can still be a fan and be objective,,or is that taboo to admit or something?
I don’t know how people can kill Fuentes for last night. He had that game won. Yeah, he was a little shaky, but that’s why he is Brian Fuentes. But he should have still gotten out of that game with a scoreless inning and a win.
He can’t control the umps.
“hey does anybdy think that because of some of the idiot comments pete got frustrated since he always said that he was tired of “babysitting”. I definitely think that factored into his decision.”
I really doubt this was a giant factor in Pete’s decision. If it did, then he wouldn’t cover the Red Sox. If his new blog (if there is one) is even 3/4ths as clean as the Sons of Sam Horn board, he’ll be lucky to go more than 5 posts without deleting a post filled with obscenities.

Update the magic number Pete!
================================================================
Which Red Sox player wears a Number 10?
Pete is going to Boston because he wants a shorter season to cover.
Give me some Chris Chambliss!
Azaz,
Nah. We all knew Pete would move on at some point.
But, Pete has been testy lately. Of course who wouldn’t be with all the crazies? But a lot of stuff makes sense now.
And just when he and Clare kissed and made up.
What’s funny is Beckett pitch 114 pitches, and all but the 9th inning and still lost, bwahahah!
In other good news, Seattle involved in a marathon. Maybe they’ll exhaust the bullpen.
Gotta love Karma getting the Saux on that passed ball from Buckett.
Ransom Ked with 2 outs, winning run on third
“Trisha -
Not fat blind turd.
The politically correct term is overweight perfect eyesight Red Sox fan.”
Dave – absolutely right about Fuentes. He had the win last night until Rick Reed intervened.
Abdab – karma is so sweet when you see it served the way it was tonight.
Trisha, did you watch the video that I linked a couple of minutes ago? You’ll love it.
I’ll bet the Angels can’t wait to get the Sawx in their own yard.Payback time!
GB – I loved it!!! I especially loved it when the dad hugged the little girl even though she threw the ball back. How cool that she actually knew enough to throw it on the field (so she hasn’t yet learned when you throw it back.)
Priceless. And precious.
The Yankees remain the only team in MLB to have 90+ wins. It will take 3 more wins for the Angels to get to 90 wins. 4 more for Boston to hit that mark.
Pretty impressive, even with the resting of the players and some of the pitching they have been putting out there lately.
Can we get an official: Hire Chad Jennings post or section going? He does an amazing job with Scranton and would be a natural replacement as he knows all the people he needs to know. If you’re not reading his blog regularly, you’re missing out.
Journal News, hire Chad Jennings!
Holy Crap we got played. Pete was always laughing at us while he made his bones with us.
I feel humiliated.
how about we get mitre to blog to get him off the mound
