The Yankees have called up 1B Juan Miranda, who is on the 40-man roster, now that Scranton’s season is over.
That gives them a 36-man roster in the majors. Everybody but Andrew Brackman, Ian Kennedy, Chris Garcia and Wilkin De La Rosa. At this point, they mat have as well have Kennedy come up and get some more innings in.

Thew Yanks are woefully short on starting pitching that is anywhere near major league ready on the 40 man roster. Hopefully Pettitte comes through ok on Monday. If he’s healthy, Andy is clearly our #2 starter now.There simply are no available replacements in the orginization. For all the talk about how it doesnt matter who the 5th starter is, we have found out differently when one member of the rotation gets injured ( Pettitte) and 4 can’t be trusted ( AJ, Joba, Mitre and Gaudin).
One season spent sitting in that filth hole dump that Fenway is will have Pete waking up in a cold sweat wondering why he left NY.
Pete, best of luck to you. Big loss for the Journal News, and a great pick-up by the Globe. You will be missed.
And by the way, forget that stupid question I asked you about why Jeter always puts his fingers into his helmet’s earholes when he scores. If I’m still wondering about it down the road, I can ask the next LoHud Blog Ringmaster.

I missed all this last night/yesterday so a congratulations to Mr. Abraham on the big move up in the newspaper world. I’m sure you will miss the plush press box in the New Yankee Stadium, but fortunately for you you’ll be visiting 9 times next year.
Going over the threads from last night, I hope that today has a little less conspiracy/tinfoil hat craziness in store–otherwise, it will be a long day at the office. Also, call up IPK in Anaheim and see if he can get that terrible taste out of his mouth from that August start last year in his own backyard.

I actually think gaudin has been a fine 5th starter. he has pitched very well in his starts, better than any other number 5. mitre can go, but i think gaudin has been very good.

Thank You…for all the scoops you have delivered with a humble bearing and, more importantly, with an honest intent. Although I wish you good luck, I must warn of the great Kool Aid Festival that you will be taking part of; maybe it’s time for that Boston fanbase to come back to reality, and maybe you’ll be part of that. I know it’s better for you but it won’t be for all the bloggers who have used your blog as our baseball bible. I don’t comment often but as many others have said I read many times a day anxiously awaiting to see what new item you had for us regarding the Yanks. I learn so many things from this blog through both you and the other bloggers. Thank you so much for all the time an effort you put into this each and every day. The MLB-released schedule for the ‘10 season has the Red Sox beginning their regular season at Fenway on April 5 against the New York Yankees, although there was a provision within the announcement that said the schedule is “subject to change”.”

What amazes me is that Pete delivered scoops, on top of what you get from the NYDN, the Post, YES, and the MLB.com crew. Those are four very large organizations with maximum “ins”. Meanwhile, Pete and his comparatively limited resources broke stories that those guys didn’t / couldn’t break. I don’t think that will be replaced.
If Borden takes over here, I think we’ll all be happy.
pete leaving is like having the 14 year old pet dog you’ve known since you were 3 die….the next dog you get you won’t want to love at first but then you find that he (she) does some things that are so cute and cuddly and you eventually start loving it more and the memories you had of your old dog never leave you but start to fade away as you learn to love your new dog more and more each day..
plus this gives a wake up call to the rest of the slacker beat writers in NY – they’ll need to step it up just like pete did if they want the yankee fans attention..

With the news of Pete leaving for Beantown…I hope that Ken Davidoff can pick the slack.
I’ve read his stuff for a while and he kind of has a knack for it like Pete…just not the readers/comment section like Pete.
My hope is that someone puts the time and effort that Pete did…especially on the off-season stuff, when my Yankee baseball news can never be filled.

Let’s not kid ourselves here. Joba was supposed to be the 5. Wang got hurt, Aceves was supposed to be the 6 or 7 and ended up in the pen. They made a rush move with Wang, and kept Hughes up…he was supposed to be our 6. IPK got hurt, who was supposed to be our 7. Gaudin, and Mitre are really starters #8 and #9. Mitre is not good, however, considering he is our 9th starting pitching option, it is something we have to deal with. It holds no bearing on the rest of this season, because he goes no where near a playoff roster.
I hope either Sam Borden or Josh (sorry, I forget the last name) takes over here. They both had very good coverage.

I completely understand what happened to the Yankees pitching.The loss of Wang especially has had a huge impact. I was commenting that at a time when the Yankees need depth, there is none to be found as of today. As for IPK, he should have been much lower in the depth chart than #7 going into this season. He obviously needed a full season at AAA and hopefully would have been in a better position to help in 2010.

Why wasn’t Austin Jackson called up? I know he’s not on the 40-man, but would dfa’ing a doofus like edwar not be in order here?
Pettite is 2 innings away from hitting his 180 IP contract level, after which he earns $750k every tenth inning. Does anyone think he won’t find a way to suck it up and do the job that he needs to do?
Still think Kennedy cannot benefit anymore from AAA. Might as well bring him up into the pen next year like the rest of Generation Next and get him consistant major league action.

Hopefully he gets some ABs up here and hits better than he did in Scranton’s postseason.
This is a loaded lefty bat, especially for Yankee Stadium. The guy hits the ball all over the place, so he’s not just a swing-and-miss or hit the ball out of the park type hitter.
Not sure how much use he’ll get, because we already have Hinske off the bench, but Miranda has as much power and is a better contact hitter. He doesn’t play a position other than first (and none too well) unfortunately, whereas Hinske pretends to play corner outfield and 3B.
Anyway, both guys give us pinch hitting lefty power options off the bench, which is sweet.

Totally Agreed, No need for Edwar. Have IPK come up and take his spot and replace his spot on the 40man with AJAX…
They may yet bring up AJax for a cup of coffee. Assume they’ll wait until after the road trip to do something like this.

IPK was 8 actually, behind Hughes, and Aceves. IPK has absolutely nothing left to prove at AAA. He dominated AAA, every time he has been there. He was the AAA Cy Young the year before he was a starter here. He needs to learn how to get outs at the pro level.

Actually Pete being sought out by the Globe is a huge credit to what he created here. Don’t think for a second that the dying Globe doesn’t know where its future lies – and it isn’t in the hard newsprint medium anymore. They need Pete more than Pete needs them. That’s a pretty good position to be in, for Pete anyway.

Is a week really a cup of coffee? I honestly don’t think the kid is that good. Pena is taking fly balls in Scranton. How does that bode for the most highly sold player in the Yankee system? Doesn’t make sense to me.
I’m still trying to comprehend this news.
I am ecstatic for Pete. The Globe is THE big time, and any job that lets you move closer to home–well, that’s certainly worth it.
At the same time, it’s hard not to feel as though our Yankee coverage won’t suffer.
What’s made Pete’s blog so great over the years is the way he uses his access, access that no non-beat writing blogger can have.
He’s made us–fans we are, not major leaguers, not writers, just fans—feel as though we are part of the game, as though our opinions matter.
The Globe, today, is the luckiest newspaper on the face of the earth.

Sam’s a columnist. I’d love to have him here too but I don’t see him taking to the road as a beat reporter now. Josh Thompson is a possibility and I think he could really grow into doing a great job.
Coach, that’s fine, so why was Pena taking flyballs in Scranton? I can see Hinske being a late season rental, but there’s:
1) Swisher
2) possibly Damon
3) Melk
4) Gardner
5) Pena, who has ML ABs under his belt and has electrified the stadium with his defensive acumen, becomes a super sub
6) AJax…that’s right, AJax is number six in the OF.
And while he is touted as the second coming of Juan Pierre, I can believe more firmly that all the pomp was a selling pitch.

Heck Ramiro Pena isn’t even better than Eduardo Nunez. He’s good nowhere around those 2. The only reason AJax hasn’t been called up is b/c he’s going to get extended rest, b/c last yr. he did winterball and they believe that drained him a bit, AJax just won the ROY for AAA, so this overrated talk ppl come out with, I actually find it laughable how anyone can put his future value lower than Pena or Gardner. He’s the next CF for the NYY.
Shelley Duncan is AAA MVP. ROTY, big deal, take it with a grain of salt. His Ks haven’t improved any, and his OBP hasn’t either. You can’t steal first base, and I haven’t seen him lately but the ST footage (some BP video’d by a fella on my blog, his youtube page is something like “JrzforBBT”) I’ve seen shows me an busy front foot that might not sync up to the major league offspeeds. As far as “the next centerfielder”, he might as well be “the next top model”, because Joe G. and company would rather platoon players who aren’t stars. I wouldn’t expect Bernie Williams, that’s all I’m saying. I don’t care how big he’s touted. He is neither a power hitter nor a contact hitter, so the strikeouts ARE a big deal.

BTW, “El Nino” has already sniffed with the big dogs, unlike AJax, who has yet to take a seat on the bus. So, I don’t know how you make that statement, that he can’t sniff a jock, based on fluff. One single solitary major league at bat puts a player miles above a Triple-A hero, make no mistake.
I don’t know what games YOU have been watching, “AWESOME”, but Pena has shown presence of mind and baseball instincts far above his age, not to mention the physical talent in batting, catching, and throwing he displays very impressively. When AJax breaks up a Halladay no-no, you can address me then.
Nobody worried that Gaudin is our second best pitcher right now. Give Kennedy a shot. may get to 4 or 5 innings before playoffs start

The trouble is that it seems The Journal News is going to AP reports instead of their own beat reporters. Both the Giants and Jets are AP releases and the Mets as well. I think Pete is going to be replaced on the beat by AP. A columnist would have to blog.
