The balance of power
This from the Yankees:
When Hideki Matsui homered on Wednesday, he joined Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez and Nick Swisher as Yankees with at least 25 jacks.
That hasn’t happened since 1938 when Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey and Joe Gordon did it. That bunch went 99-53 and swept the Cubs in the World Series, outscoring them 22-9.
Joe D went .324/.386/.581 that year with 32 homers and 140 RBI at the age of 23. He also had 13 triples. Imagine that, at 23?

Pete will still get to cover the Yankees in October if the Globe has someone at the World Series.
So do we have an office pool on the replacement going?
Joe D is insanely good.
i miss pete giving mo his props, memo to pete
do this blog proud and tell rsn that john p can’t hold mo jockstrap jk
Repost:
I read the Torre book. I didn’t buy it, I got it as a gift.
It is in no way, shape, or form, a tattletale book. It is a well-researched, if highly biased toward Torre for obvious reasons, book on the Yankees dynasty and their subsequent downfall with Joe Torre at helm. I didn’t like the idea of it before I read it but now that I’ve read it I could say that I’ve lost no respect at all for Joe Torre.
Pete will be replaced by
Sam Bordan
Kevin Doughneey (sp?)
Mike Doughnessy (sp? or are they the same guy?)
Ernie Palladino (they will rehire him)
“Joe D is insanely good”
But if he played in today’s game, he would only hit about 25 HRs per year.

But, of course, he would also be about 90 years old.
But he didn’t play in today’s game and he was the second most dominant player of his era (Teddy Ballgame was better).
Apples and oranges. I always rated players by how dominat they were in their era, which is why Ruth is number one.
Joe D. was great, but would his blog have 20 fresh posts daily?
I think not.
Lol Dodge Stratus .. classic !
Pete – don’t apologize for Angel Berroa joke. You’ll need to keep brushed up anyway when you start the Mike Lowell jokes.

what’s your read on the future of the blog?
i think us regular posters should hold out for hard cash.
why should we continue insulting each other for free ?
did you see all the people who came on as first time posters last night to pay tribute to pete?
i had no idea how many people read , but don’t comment.
some of them were pretty good too.
I nominate Chad Jennings for LoHud Yanks blog!
Cbs 880 & john sterling’s ratings will go up the next few days as now we could listen to the game without suzyn waldman
Randy: If someone paid me to post…
(job search is driving me insane. Beyond insane.)
Disgusting comments by a guy named “Reich”.
I think I may try the radio for once to see how Kim does.
Lets just hope Sterling can manage to keep his hands to himself. I’m sure it will be a difficult task for him though.

Agreed.
To be pitied. Think how lonely this person must be. Who else would come in here to post something so heinous? A desperate soul. Pass into the light, and leave him to his darkness.
“Wait till the ALDS”
I don’t think it is such a slam dunk that Williams was better than Joe D. He was only better at one phase, and even Williams said that Dimag was the greatest right-handed hitter he ever saw.
Dimaggio was superior to Williams defensively, their arms were not comparable, and Dimaggio was a far better baserunner. Also, Dimaggio had those intangibles that Derek Jeter is so often credited with(rightfully so). If fans just look at stats 50 years from now, Jeter would be well down the list of great players of this era. But those of us who follow the Yanks know that Jeter is one of the very best of right now. Same with Dimaggio in his time, only I think he was the best of his time. Williams also played about 5 more seasons than Joe.
Rebecca,
Good luck in your job searching. Don’t settle, despite the “climate.” Hold out for what you yearn for.
Mark Feinsand’s got a game thread up and Bryan Hoch has a post up about the pre-game workout…
let the battle for readership begin
randy, I was out of internet/cell range for most of yesterday and part of today, I really just skimmed a few of the comments.
Who knows about the future of the blog… it will really depend on the efforts of Pete’s successor. I suspect the Journal News isn’t going to go out and get a ‘name’ to be its Yankee beat reporter. It will either find someone from within or get someone from a smaller market/team. It’ll be up to him (or her) to keep things going.
I suspect most of the regulars will stick around for the transision. We all want to celebrate the road to #27 together, don’t we?
If anyone at LoHud is reading, Josh did a fine job filling in for Pete on the blog recently.
Williams best years were better than Dimaggio’s best. I know Joe D was also fast and great defensively, but Tedy Ballgame is probably the second best hitter ever besides Ruth. Joe D stole the MVP from him the year he hit 400.
i wouldn’t sign matsui or damon next winter because i think it’s a case of been there done that , and i’d rather end things clean a year early than a year late.
cashman should be able to do something better with all the cash that will be freed up.
i can see the reasoning of people who want the offense , but i think the yankees need to somehow go out and get a #2 pitcher because they sure don’t have one in burnett and i don’t think hughes or joba is going to be a #2 for at least another year and maybe longer than that.
i’d be a lot more comfortable with burnett as a #3 and not count on him like you do a #2.
oooop – Pete’s the game thread up too
Sorry I can’t take your word for it Wait, since I heard more negative than positive and read enough of the “respectable” bitterboy on-line excerpts to know that if I received the tattler as a gift I would have burned it.
“I didn’t like the idea of it before I read it but now that I’ve read it I could say that I’ve lost no respect at all for Joe Torre.”
Well since I didn’t have a whole ton left, I can say that the Torre coffin for me. A bitter old man doing his best to discredit the Yankees for his hurt feelings since he couldn’t any longer be trusted to deliver anything more than a one and out. Good riddance. And that’s how I feel about Torre.
*********************************
I also believe DiMag was superior to Teddy “I love to hit in the bandbox and play most of my games there” Williams. It appears Wait and I don’t agree on much tonight.
Torre was not perfect in the book-I still think he was 100% wrong about resigning Bernie Williams. And there were certain things that could have been left out (Brown huddled in the corner of the clubhouse crying comes to mind). But overall it’s not an attack book.
Reich — not cool. At all.
You make a good point about Fenway Park-if Joey D had hit there, he probably would have hit 400. Who knows, maybe then some. But his HR totals would have dropped. He was a line drive hitter.
Question, though, and this is totally unsarcastic and serious. What were these “bitterboy” excerpts?

i definitely think they should go with someone young with lots of energy and who this site would be a good career stepping stone . whoever it is needs to be right on top of it with frequent posts and email availability .
i know pete says that his bosses are taking it seriously to continue it the way it’s been, but with the lack of participation on the mets site, i’m guessing it’s not going to be the same.
that’s not the end of the world though. if that happens, something else will emerge.
i just hope everyone keeps using their same usernames on other sites . there’s some people that i’d like to keep reading and arguing with.
of course there’s some i’d like to never interact with again and i’m sure the feeling is mutual
Let me put this in perspective for you. The 23 year old DiMaggio hit 23 HRs and 140 RBI, and 13 triples…
DiMag was a dead pull righty hitter. It was 457′ to LC in the old Yankee Stadium. And 466′ to CF. Do you have any idea how far that is? .. They called it Death Valley for a reason. Its where Joe D’s 450′ monster shots went for outs. Or for one of his 13 triples.
DiMaggio easily… and I mean easily.. lost 15-20 HRs per season playing in that Yellowstone Park of a Stadium. If he played in Fenway, he’d have hit 50+ per year without a problem, and might have broken Ruth’s then record of 60.
“If he played in Fenway, he’d have hit 50+ per year without a problem, and might have broken Ruth’s then record of 60.”
I disagree. Fenway would have given him a higher average, but less power because he was a line drive hitter.

Sorry, double post.
I would love Chad Jennings to get the job. I am thinking Sam Borden though. It would be nice if they took some of the bloggers here and let them do some work and see what happens, maybe guest post for a day or something.
Those new readers of yours in NE just aren’t going to understand the Berroa schtick you’ve had goin’ this season, but its too funny to let it die. Get Tito to pick up the ancient one and let the fun continue!
Maybe we should raise our expectations of Joba C.
Offer Damon and Matsui 1 year contracts. If they really want to stay, great. If not, the kids in the minors get their shot. I worry about going “youthful” too fast.
The skankeeys should quit buyen everybody and make the sport fair again.
Pete
Congratulations on the new job. I read the blog 2-3x a day and almost never post comments. I have truly enjoyed your work and wish you the best of luck. It will be difficult replacing you. How about some other Yankee blog recommendations from you.
Thanks and good luck
Pete,
I echo most sentiments here when I say congrats and you will be missed. This is the one yankees site I visit on a daily basis as you provide unique insight into the team. Best of luck.
