:) you know what I mean. hopefully people post where else they are going to get their info/continue the discussion.

Feels like summer left, the “kids” left and then the blog ended. All on the same day.

“Bad” pitchers? Melancon may be young and just getting his first taste of big league ball. But he’s also the best short relief prospect in baseball today and will be a great.. not good.. GREAT pitcher in this league one day.

You have no idea what you’re talking about.

  11. Drive 4-5

I had no problem accessing the link. For those that can’t read it, let me paraphrase Melancon’s words. ” I have no idea why since coming to the majors I now have a penchant for hitting batters and walking in runners with the bases loaded. I have no idea where the ball is going when I throw a 2 seam fastball inside. Please help me lord, please help!”

  12. Joe

How come we didn’t get the “greetings from the XXXXX XXXXX airport” post today?

I see lots of discussion around the net surrounding the Cy Young award and how Greinke has better meaningful numbers than CC. But I think if you look at those numbers (ignoring W/L) Mariano has even better numbers.

    Mariano Greinke
    G 59 30
    IP 59.2 210.1
    ERA 1.66 2.14
    ERA+ 268 204
    SO/BB 5.82 5.09
    WHIP 0.888 1.065

So except for IP it would be hands down Mariano. But Mariano has pitched in roughly one out of every three games and leads the league in saves. I know some people will say the CY Young award is for starting excellence, not for relieving excellence. Well, part of starting is winning, I just don’t see any rationale under which you give the award to Greinke that by the same rationale you wouldn’t actually give it to Mariano. I mean by the same sort of logic that says if KC had scored more runs Greinke would be the clear favorite we could say if Mariano was a starter instead of a reliever with those numbers.

But I ain’t saying Mo should win since the award is about wins. Cy Young has the most wins of any pitcher — that’s what the award is basically about. In the end ya gotta win games. Which Zack ain’t done enough — yet!

So again, I don’t see a way that you give it to Zack and not to Mo. So, am I wrong, is the Cy Young not about winning games?

  14. Paul

Pete — Check out Brian Hoch’s blog on the umpire’s comments after the game. The HP umpire said that Melancon had thrown the exact same pitch to a lefty hitter previously and that he therefore didn’t see any issue of intent. The umpires’ comments are fascinating and show that at least these umpires (Joyce and Cousins) know the game pretty well and are very conscientious about doing their job.

  15. Benny Blanco

Whoa, I had a terrible dream last night about pete leaving LOHUD and joinging the boston globe. Thank g-d that’s not true.

  16. Christina

Can’t write him off just yet, folks. Kenny I agree with you. At least I hope he is going to be as great as I had thought. You never know how things will pan out though. More time in the minors is needed, that’s for sure.

  18. Coach6423

So does anyone see the story on ESPN, not only does Rick Redd and his crew blow 3 calls in 1 game badly, but he expects sympathy too. They filed a grievance with the league that the Angels were verbally abusive. That man has some stones.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....id=4482669

  19. Christina

Joe, because his flight to Seattle was yesterday. And as you can imagine, he was a little tied up with things.

  20. josh

Other teams should know by now that yankees young pitchers can not throw strikes consistently. This is a trend and it must be something in the minor league that needs to be change.

  21. Blackaccord

    Pete,

Is Sam Borden gonna continue this blog??

  23. upstate kate

Most young pitchers have control problems when they first come up, it just gets magnified b/c it is the Yankees…just like the whole Joba/Youk thing.

    thanks for the link Christina.

  24. yada yada yada

    Mariano Greinke

now THAT would be on hell of a pitcher!

  25. Just call me Mr. Clutch

The real problem with the umpires isn’t that they blew calls, which is bad enough, they took a win away from the Angels with those bad calls. The Angels won that game. They got the third out two times with Green, who was walked. They should be abused by every true fan of the game, not just the Angels.

If the Commissioner had any stones he would overturn the results of that game.

  26. Joe

I hope whoever the Journal employs on this blog follow the same things Pete usually does specially the injury updates, the pre and post games reports.

  27. upstate kate

he could start and relieve his own games

  28. Bob(the original)

Seriously, there’s not a New York paper that could have realized Pete’s value? Maybe that’s why they are all going down the toilet….stupidity.

Oh well, Hopefully Borden takes over this blog. He would be my pick.

    Happy trails Pete.

    why is everyone so down?

Yes, Pete may be leaving, but the Lace and Stiletto ads aren’t going anywhere.
At work we’ll still have to scroll down quickly so no one can see scantily clad women on our laptops. Some things won’t change at all….

    Coach6423

Didn’t read the article yet, but he has to be kidding me. He cost the Angels a game. They should file a grievance about him! If they got the call right, they’d be crying they were getting yelled at by a bunch of drunk frat boys at Fenway.

  31. upstate kate

If the umps were smart, they would not call any further attention to that game. They gave that game to the Sox, which could have potential play off implications for 4 teams. You can see in Green’s expression that he knew he had struck out. Even the Boston papers acknowledge they were given a gift.

I haven’t been getting those ads much lately. I am getting much more Atlantic City ads these days. Its like they KNOW me…..

Well THANK GOD the Yankees don’t have to rely on a pitcher like this guy (referece post from either earlier this week or last week):

A’s Tomko out with nerve damage in armComment Email Print Share Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. — Oakland right-hander Brett Tomko has been sidelined for the rest of the season with nerve damage in his right arm.

Athletics manager Bob Geren made it official before Thursday’s game against the Cleveland Indians. Left-hander Dana Eveland will start on Sunday, with right-hander Edgar Gonzalez pitching Monday against the Texas Rangers.

Tomko told team doctors he felt something in his arm during his five-hit shutout against the Rangers in Texas on Monday. He threw 114 pitches and could not move his arm the next morning.

Tomko, who finished 5-3 with a 3.77 ERA, is currently with his wife, Linda, who is expecting twins in the next couple of days. The couple lives near San Diego.

“The World Umpires Association conducts itself in a professional manner and we expect everyone in and around major league baseball to do the same,” union spokesman Lamell McMorris said.
    ****

Haha what a joke that statement is. How many times do you see a ump trying to make a show out of himself. And to say close calls went against the Angels is bunk. That was a swinging strike, and that was a perfect strike at the knee. the calls were flat out wrong.

  36. JZ

So now that Pete’s leaving, anyone have tips for some other good Yankee blogs? I check out river ave blues now and then, but would love to find another in-depth blog written by a reporter. Is this too much to ask? Dag.

Mets fans jumped ship on their team in July. The last two years, every Mets fan I know was in my face all season. I haven’t heard a peep from anyone about that team in months. They might as well not even exist in this city

  38. Wave Your Hat

Congratulations, Pete, on what will be a great job. You will be missed – your blog has been a super one-stop Yankee news site.

  39. Judith

Pete, I completely understand your decision to go to the Globe. It makes perfect sense professionally. But I woke up this morning feeling like a friend had died, so I wanted to make sure I left you a comment thanking you for being the kind of writer I wanted to check in with every day, and sometimes multiple times. I never got into the discussions, but I read every word you wrote. You enhanced my knowledge as a Yankees fan exponentially. Thank you, and best of luck to you.

  40. Rex

“I just don’t see any rationale under which you give the award to Greinke that by the same rationale you wouldn’t actually give it to Mariano.”

Rationale is fairly simple. 200+ innings of excellence trumps 65 of the same.

It is odd to tune into one of their games every now and then.

I was sort of keeping track of the back-up players.

But now even those guys are gone and it’s the back-up players for the back-up players for the back-up players.

It would give even a die-hard fan a horrible headache…

I woke up today thinking that the end of this blog was just a dream, a nightmare infact. Unfortunately it turned out to be true.

I may not post much or know anyone, but I read this blog numerous times a day, and it feels like I’ve just lost a good friend.

    Stultus-

When they signed Gary Sheffield at the beginning of the season, he was considered an afterthought who would see occasional playing time. He actually turned out to be a very valuable player for them. Until he got hurt too anyway.

Although, poor Angel Berroa couldn’t cut it on that team either

  45. Joe

My morning are never gonna be the same without this blog(which Im not sure will be the same after Pete leaves).

  46. Rishi

Joe – it’s already very different and it’s only been ~16 hours

  47. Joe

I think we all feel the same today. I am living in RI and this blog makes me feel like back home in NY and I kid you not, I woke up a few times during the night thinking about what it will be when we don’t have Pete.

  48. Global

Same here. Not even joking. Feels like losing a good friend.

  49. Sony

Pete, what a loss for Yankee fans. I can’t imagine anyone matching the dedication you’ve put into this blog, but I hope one of your LoHud colleagues notices the gaping void you’ve left in the Yankee blogosphere and at least tries to fill your shoes. Would it be possible for your successor to go on using the terms “GGBG” and “Swishalicious?”

Bet you’ll have a wicked good time in Boston – that is, hitting the clubs every night after the BoSox make an early exit. In all seriousness, Yanks fans wouldn’t bother hating the Red Sox if they weren’t a first class organization too. History, intensity and passion await you on the other side of the rivalry. They’re lucky to have you.

  50. rl1856

Pete you will be missed. You have set a very high standard.

One question- would it have been possible to have delayed your departure / start date until -after- the season was over ? Think continuity….

    Godspeed !

  51. rover

It only raises questions if you never watched Ryne Duren pitch.
