Pete, I visit this site multiple times on a daily basis from my iPhone using safari as my browser and I never have any problems seeing page two of the post. Again, thanks for all you’ve done over the years for the lhyb, yanks and for all of us fans. I will truly miss your contributions and insight. Good luck in your future endeavors with the Boston globe. Take care.

    nice to see kennedy back

hopefully he turns into a decent pitcher to add debth next year

Sox 5 games back in the loss column with 3 against us? Play KC while we are in Anaheim?? And Greinke might not face the Sox??

Good thing we wrapped up this division weeks ago.

  7. bru

if we skip mitres start who goes?

    gaudin,kennedy?

i dont think kennedy can pitch more than 3 or 4 innings

why not start kennedy for 4 innings & bring in gaudin, ace ???

girrrdi said it will be good for kennedy to get ml innings in so look for it to happen

i would not be suprised at all to see him get mitres start.
    then bring in gaudin,ace,etc…

Robbie’s willingness to take advantage of the experience of those around him shows a level of maturing. When you’re willing to admit how much you don’t know, it’s amazing what you can learn.

Spirited discussion late into the night last night.

It’s okay to give Mo some “credit” in last nights loss. It’s not something you can say often but it’s okay to say it when it happens instead of second guessing every other move. The earth won’t tilt off its axle.

Everyone here is entitled to their opinion but some people seem to think if they state their opinion over and over again, everyone will start to agree with them on the 10th time and if not then, sometime around the 20th. While you are entitled to your opinion, no one is obligated to agree with it and the repetition is annoying.

  9. Giuseppe Franco

Mitre is the sixth starter. He might not get another start until after they clinch home field.

if we go 7-7 the rs have to go 14-2 to end up with the same record

i dont care whos schedule is easier it is almost impossible.

for the angels to do the same thing & for us to miss the playoffs is even less likely

  12. NYYanksFan

“And Greinke might not face the Sox??”

Was originally scheduled to pitch Tuesday but might be pushed back to Wednesday.

What holding him back a day does is line him up to pitch Sox on Wednesday and Yanks on Monday. If he pitched Tuesday against the Sox as planned, his following start would be Sunday vs Twins and the Yanks would have missed him.

  13. bru

so we would have to go 7-7 & the rs & angels would have to go approx 27-4 combined

i thought i heard the fat lady slip out a note

  14. Giuseppe Franco

I haven’t been concerned about the Red Sox in over a month.

    This team will be fine.

I predict the Yanks will clinch the division next Sunday against Boston.

This board can continue after Pete leaves. There are many good posters here. And, many of you who “lurk” and hardly ever post but did sign on to say farewell to Pete — join in. The more the merrier.

And P L E A S E, no more gossipy stuff, OK? Baseball is the name of the game.

  16. Harley

Sent this to you as an email, but wanted to post it as well…

Thanks so much for all of your great work. I don’t comment all that much, but the first thing i do after a Yankee game, the very first, is check this blog and your wrap-up. Come to think of it, I check the blog before every game too, for the lineups and pre-game notes….

So basically? The Yankees handle things between the first and last out. But I count on you for the before and the after. And that’s something I’ll miss.

    Thanks again, Pete –

Unless Yanks take a 2007/20088 Mets like swoon, I do not see how Yanks will not win AL East and also end with best record in AL, as there is not much time left for Sox and Angels to catch up.

  22. JeterJobaCanoFanForever, enough said

My concern is Joba to the bullpen for the division series. Can’t they leave him on the rotation and just not let him pitch.

The Yankees have put so much time and effort into the Joba Rules this season – isn’t this move defeating the purpose. Earlier in the season in an interview he said that knowing he was going to be in the rotation made it easier for his preparation.

Pitching out of the bullpen will be so different for him and he hasn’t done it all season.

  23. dennis-Costanza

    GF.

I agree with you, Yankee fans shouldn’t be concerned about the Red Sox until if/when they meet in the ALCS. The division is done and the WC is done and both teams will line up the last few weeks accordingly to get ready for the playoffs. IMO.

“Hey — how about taking control of Pete’s new blog in Boston and just making it Yanks-dominated (at least by posters). We’ve got to retaliate somehow for Boston stealing him before the playoffs.”

Pete’s new bosses will be very happy about it and Pete too.
The reality is these blogs are commercial.
The more hits/posts they get more proft they make.
So, I am sure Pete is hoping that many of us will visit his new blog and post there. I do not think he cares it turns into Yankee dominated.

I always believed and stated on this blog that Pete really does not dislike A-Rod or Girardi. Pete knew there are many supporters of A-Rod and Girardi here and by posting negetively about them, Pete was getting many more posts/hits.

I don’t get anyone killing Mo/Jo for not walking Ichiro. I groaned when I saw it was Ichiro coming up to bat, but I still trust Mo to get out any hitter at any time.

That was a hard loss to take – the Sox just don’t ever lose. What should have been an easy stroll to the division title has suddenly become something of a race again. Joe can not afford to now rest the starters on a regular basis and play around/experiment with things. If you guys think that is panicking, so be it, but the Yankees need to put this thing away.

Sure, I remember Pete supported management when they made the Girardi decision. Pete is great at looking at things through contextual prisms and avoiding personal bias. Sometimes he writes as if he is NYY management, others as a baseball purist, others as a Yankees fan, others as a fan of the game, or even as an AL supporter. But above all I would say he avoids personal bias in favor of having a contextual take.

One thing I was thinking; Pete obviously loves The Boss (Bruce not George). How can any Springsteen fan truly hate the Yankees?

  34. crawdaddy

“Why would KC change Greinke’s scheudle to pitch against Yanks potentially hurting his chances at Cy Young?”

Greinke was struck on his right pitching elbow by a batted ball and has some slight swelling from it which is why he only pitched five innings in that start.

  35. baseballfab

The Sox will NOT catch the Yanks but that isn’t the issue.

The issue is because we are choking it up now, we have to play our regulars till the end of the season, when we could have put away the crap teams in our schedule and rested everyone for the better part of two weeks.

We blew the chance we had to capitalize on our insane historic 2nd half performance, and thats what I am pissed about.

    Betsy,

The Yankees goals are to win the division and then clinch home field advantage.

It is not to win the AL East by 10 games and home field by 12.

Don’t be surprised one iota if Francona starts resting his players more as soon as they clinch a playoff spot. He’s going to want to keep his guys fresh, too.

They’ve got the Wildcard in the bag and don’t need to win the division to play in October.

That’s just one of many reasons why Yankee fans need to chill out.

    Betsy –

What we are seeing is called in statistics “Regression to the mean.” That is, after a period of extreme performance whether good or bad, subsequent performance will tend the other way for a while so that over a large time hack a mean or average will be attained. The Sox had sucked for awhile, they are on fire now and will cool. I mean look at Mo, he was clearly performing AS GOOD AS EVER, well he can’t be AS GOOD AS EVER forever. N’est-ce pas?

I remember others worrying about the Bombers “peaking to soon.” Well, at least we can’t say that anymore.

I know it is fun to vacillate between dire concerns and orgasmic elation, but where does all this bipolar-ness get us. AJ being sharp was the story, we are 99.9% likely in the playoffs.

When the team lands in Anaheim, Calif., CC Sabathia will take the cast to dinner. It’s a role Jason Giambi used to handle.”

i forgot about us still being in the playoffs even if boston & the angels win the division by us beating out texas for the wc but for us to lose the al east & the best record/hf advantage my numbers i believe are correct barring any tie breaking advantages the rs & angels have if any

no big deal as long as we get in

the bottom line is our pitching will need to get it done & our offense of course.

    becket
    lester
clay can all be lights out.

i would like the angels to beat boston & us to face them even thoug the angels have good pitching also

the point is there & valid as far as the best record & winning the division

  42. Betsy

    GF, that’s true.

Art, I don’t think it’s a matter of the Yanks regressing to the mean as I think they played well for far too long to suggest that that dominance was a fluke. What is happening, however, is that the Yankees offense (except for a few blowouts) hasn’t been as consistent and, more importantly, the pitching has been shaky aside from CC and Andy.

I’m not concerned so much about the division as I am about the teams heading into the playoffs. This is the best Yankee team in years, but again – I don’t have much confidence in the pitching. Meanwhile, the Sox (who are a very good team) are getting good performances out of Bucholz (though as I’ve said, I want to see him against teams other than the Orioles and Jays) and are getting Wake and Dice-K back. Things are just falling into place for them.

I admit that I do not want to play them in the playoffs, but then again – that’s looking too far ahead. First things first – get out of the first round.

I did not say to bump any of the 1-3 but questioned whether to leave Joba on the rotation list instead of putting him in the pen. I can see him coming in for a 4th or 5th, if necessary inning like Mussina did a few years ago but out of the rotation not the pen.

Cashman and Girardi have both said all season that Joba would not go back to the pen. Then Cashman said post season will be different. Do you know for a fact that they have informed Joba he will be in the pen? They didn’t always keep him in the loop.

Egad – I wish they would just let him pitch and let all the restrictions fall away.

  48. crawdaddy

A short game series in the playoffs can change any pitching role. I’ve seen HOF starting aces come into playoff games.

  49. randy l.

“Don’t be surprised one iota if Francona starts resting his players more as soon as they clinch a playoff spot. He’s going to want to keep his guys fresh, too.”

    Giuseppe Franco-

precisely why the yankees are easing up a few games just so the red sox will get division fever and go for it when the carrot is dangled in front of them .

it’s all a plot to get them sucked in and then whammo we turn it on again.

( the above is obviously tongue in cheek, but the red sox actually would have a decision to make if it gets close)

i think the biggest reason against the red sox getting close is cc sabathia.

the yankees haven’t had for a while this kind of horse they could ride and hopefully he won’t disappoint.

  50. JeterJobaCanoFanForever, enough said

    Bru and Crawdaddy,

I guess I am not making myself clear. I know that a short game series can change any pitching role. Those HOF aces you mentioned were still in the rotation when they “came in”, weren’t they?

Alright – I will put it this way. I do not want to see Joba put into the pen for the division series. Because it is a different mental and physical preparation. If they do not intend to pitch him in the WS then so inform him and let him prepare himself for that role in the BP.

My question was simply – - can Joba be left on the rotation list for the division series even if they don’t pitch him.

“They’ve got the Wildcard in the bag and don’t need to win the division to play in October.

Please help me understand your point, it’s Ok to lose the division and home field so you can play the majority of games in the other people home park just so you can play in October. You want to win in October and throwing away an advantage like Home field seems to not be something that is at all helpful to that objective.

joba will be used when needed.

if he is the best option he will pitch

right now burnett,cc,pettitte are better options & if joba was lights out now burnett or pettitte are in the pen because we only need 3 pitcers for the first series i believe

keep in mind the more innings & pitches joba uses the more days off he needs.

if he goes 1 inning we can use him the next day possibly,2 innings he might need a day off or more, more than that who knows

it will be interesting to see how many innings joba takes away from hughes in the first round.

i think because of jobas inconsistency the team is having a hard time figuring out where joba belongs & the fact that we just dont know if pitching him over burnett or pettitte is the right choice

they might very well use him in game 4 as long as it does not push cc,burnett, pettitte to 6 days rest

do we have an advantage using joba in mismatch against the other teams pitcher??

    is there a mismatch?

i am not sure there is one.

  54. 86w183

Bru — Thanx for putting me on the “A” List — I’m flattered to be in that company.

I full intend to stay right here and expect that either Chad Jennings or Sam Borden will manage it and it will not change dramatically.

I would rather have lost last night’s game the way they did than win a 10-9 game with AJ pitching poorly.

  55. Art

    Betsy —

Good point about the mean not being determined a priori. My main point here was Mo would have to get a BS eventually and the team probably wasn’t going to go .700 for ever.

  56. bru

    JeterJobaCanoFanForever, enough said

i think the yankees are going to carry a certain amount of pitchers

i dont see them labeling anyone a starter or reliever

they cant tell joba anything now because they need to see him pitch in is next few starts & we need to see who we are playing, when & what setup we are chosing.

joba knew all along that anything was possible?

how can we say to burnett or pettitte that joba is starting game 2 or 3 when we just dont know what the better option is?

wo do you want in game 1 or 2. joba or burnett/pettitte ??

    impossible to tell

if joba is lights out over is last 2 starts & pettitte & burnett get bombed it gets more difficult

girrardi will go with his best options & when burnett, pettitte, joba are pitching about the same the decision gets tough

if girrardi has a chance to use joba in game 4 because he feels it is to our advantage he might do so

    i agree

it will be nice to see burnett, joba pitch well in their last few starts

it will be very interesting to see were joba fits in

can we use joba in the first series without over resting the others & do we want to??

is joba going to be the 3rd starter or pettitte?

i just dont see joba starting over

    cc
    burnett
    pettitte

his numbers do not warrant it but what he can do makes it very interesting

i just remember him beating becket in fenway 1-0 wich is very hard to do

  59. JeterJobaCanoFanForever, enough said

Jeez, Bru — I know that Joba is the #4 pitcher in the rotation, OK? I am just asking if he can be left in the rotation EVEN tho they do not intend to pitch him in the division series. I am not saying he should pitch before CC AJ or Andy.

My point is that if he does pitch relief let him come out of the rotation instead of the BP.

Is it a hard rule that only intended pitchers are left on the rotation list and everyone else goes to the bull pen??
