Boof! Bam! Zowie!

photoIll-timed as it was after a loss, the Yankees had their annual rookie hazing today.

The theme was the old Batman television show.

Mark Melancon was Batman. Ramiro Pena was a disturbing Catwoman and Mike Dunn was the Riddler. Massage therapist Lou Potter was the Penguin and video man Anthony Flynn made a fine Robin.

The players had fun with it. Now those guys need to fly to Anaheim dressed that way.

thanks Pete, now Ramiro Pena as the Catwoman is going to replace Kevin Brown’s start in the ’04 LCS in my nightmares.

  3. james September 20th, 2009 at 9:13 pm

    What was Cervelli?

  4. GreenBeret7 September 20th, 2009 at 9:14 pm

Doreen, was Cervelli involved in last year’s dress-up?

  5. Nick in SF September 20th, 2009 at 9:14 pm

pat: I wouldn’t have said anything but I was wondering how the pick looked on the big video screen.

  6. pat September 20th, 2009 at 9:15 pm

Cisco was a disturbing Village People biker last year.

  7. Trevor September 20th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

    Horrible!

  8. Doreen September 20th, 2009 at 9:18 pm

Ahh, thanks, Pat. The Cervelli mystery is solved. How quickly we forget!

  9. Derwood Morris September 20th, 2009 at 9:18 pm

The Wizard of Oz hazing with Joba, etc, remains the most disturbing.

  10. pat September 20th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

Cano and Wang in the Yankee Cheerleader outfits is still my favorite.

People should be thankful that this wasn’t the theme in 2007 with Shelley Duncan dressed as Catwoman. The name would fit….just not the spandex.

  13. GreenBeret7 September 20th, 2009 at 9:23 pm

at least Pena didn’t need to shave before getting dressed. He’s not old enough.

  14. Abdababdaserser September 20th, 2009 at 9:25 pm

Disturbing was seeing the Red Sox hazing pictures this year. Wizard of Oz, all done in drag.

I’m sorry but that was just sad.

GB, The one glaring difference between Gator and Chamberlain is that Ronnie listened and learned….I’m not getting that from Joba……You have to wonder if the Yankee Brass is getting just a tad fed up with not only the lack of progress, but the clear regressional path that Joba’s on……Maybe the club adopts the Halliday reclaimation program, and just tear it down and start all over…..Should be an interesting off season, as Chamberlain is not where they figured he’d be at this stage…

    ————————————————————

Yes, but, that wasn’t always the case with Guidry. Nobody ever seemed to get through to him until Lyle took him to the pen (or woodshed). Lyle only told that part of the story and guidry corraberated it. I’m sure that Lyle had some other things to say, but, I’ve never heard it. Never understood why somebody didn’t snap Lyle up as a pitching coach. He was goofy as Hell, but, the man knows pitching. Guidry was able to pass whatever Lyle showed him to Dave Righetti. Something’s not clicking with Chamberlain and Eiland. I might be inclined to let Mike Harkey take a crack at him. They were the same type of pitchers. Maybe that common ground.

Where’s the Magic Number thread today?

  17. Rishi September 20th, 2009 at 9:27 pm

no change to the magic number tonight, right…that’s probably why

  18. jennifer September 20th, 2009 at 9:29 pm

Rishi the magic number for the playoffs is 1

  19. Rishi September 20th, 2009 at 9:31 pm

but that post usually refers to the magic number for the division, right. If the Red Sox win and the Yankees lose – the number doesn’t change :)

  20. E-gawa September 20th, 2009 at 9:31 pm

It makes alot of sense.. Joba was auditioning for the role of the Joker today.

  21. Pat M. September 20th, 2009 at 9:33 pm

GB, After The Catfish got hurt in 77, Martin had to use Gator and he was outstanding….He pitched a gem in Game 3 @ Dodger Stadium highlighted by Pinnela’s leaping catch to rob Ron Cey of what would have been a game changing home run….Of course in 1978 Guidry was unreal

  22. Wes September 20th, 2009 at 9:35 pm

Man, Pena got the short end of the stick. Poor kid.

  23. jennifer September 20th, 2009 at 9:35 pm

Yes I know, but I have a feeling YUP was a red sox fan being a smart alec. That is why I pointed out were are almost assured of making the playoffs. :-)

  24. Bernadette September 20th, 2009 at 9:36 pm

Pena looks more like CatMan than Catwoman.

  25. jennifer September 20th, 2009 at 9:37 pm

Dunn clearly has an in with someone. He got the least revealing costume. Batman, Catwoman, and Robin. Lets just say, ….. hmmm don’t know how to say it. :-)

Bodhistattva….When I was watching the Jet swarming defense as they attacked Tom Brady from everywhere, it reminded me of Tex’s dad’s 4-6 box defense that the Chicago Bears ran that punished QB’s in 1984……Very impressive performance ESPECIALLY vs The NE Patriots……I’ll never rag on Tom Brady, he’s a special player….He’s the NFL’s version of Derek Jeter, a Class act….
    ===

LOL. They were swarming, alright. Jenkins was obviously physically challenged today, but man how quick is that big man. Had him playing over left tackle a lot today. You have to be really pleased, under 50 percent completion for Brady and the Boys, not much underneath for them today, not much action on the usual NE crossing patterns.

Brady may be out of sync, but I’ll take my hat off to the Jets. I was mad at Rhodes for shooting his mouth off this week (I mean, just play) but that might have been a ploy on his part. Don’t think he ever crossed the line today. Am getting ready to watch replay and then muster the courage to watch Joba’s outing, lol.

  27. Rishi September 20th, 2009 at 9:37 pm

jennifer- gotcha – I never understood why someone would choose to post on/read the blog of a rival team like that

Bod, there’s a lot to compare with Guidry and Chamberlain. Guidry was a big pitching pick during his time, but, as good as he should have been earlier, something just didn’t click. From time to time, he was thought of as a bit of a problem child, but, God….what an arm. Martin sent him to the pen in ‘77 spring training and told him in front of everyone, “If you see a player that you think you can get out, let me know.” Lyle was so POed that he went with Guidry to the pen and Lyle showed him how he held his slider. They worked for about 5 minutes on it, and Lyle told Guidry that he was on his own and to work with the catcher, throwing nothing but sliders and to shove that curve ball. Lyle went back two innings later and watcged Guidry throw 5 straight. Lyle threw his hands up and said, There’s nothing else that I can teach you.” Lyle said the pitches were better than his or Carlton’s. Lyle went to Martin and told him to get Guidry in the game now. Two perfect innings and 6 strikeouts against the white sox middle of the order.
Martin was so upset, because he thought he was finally rid of Guidry, Guidry didn’t get his first start until the end of April. 5 complete game shutouts and 16 wins and Ron Guidry was born.
    =======

Lol. Great story. And Guidry last for 9-10 years, and he got started rather “late.”

  34. bru September 20th, 2009 at 9:51 pm

    with joba

could it be that batters are sitting on his slider & fastball only

can he throw any other pitches to keep hitters honest?

it seems like they are laying off the slider & sitting on his fastball

haha where is that from? Did they get secuirty in the act?

  36. GreenBeret7 September 20th, 2009 at 9:54 pm

Bod, the end kicker to that story was after the spring training game, Lemon went to gabe Paul and offered a trade for Guidry and the unknown pitcher. Of course, Lemon “couldn’t remember” Guidry’s name, just the kid that pitched today. According to Lemon, he said Paul told him to take a hike (in Lemon’s polite laguage). “If you can’t remember the kid’s name, he’s gotta be ok.” Paul had Lemon with the Indians in the 50s. Lemon said that he laughed all winter long in 1978.

Jennifer – the pictures are from Daylife. Here is the picture caption:

New York Yankees rookie shortstop Ramirio Pena, dressed as Catwoman, goes through pre-flight security screening as he leaves Safeco Field in Seattle, following a baseball game between the Yankees and the Seattle Mariners, Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009. From Mark Feinsand:

I mentioned to Derek Jeter – who, by the way, never had to go through this ritual, since the Yankees didn’t do it in either 1995 or ‘96 – that the event seems to be more fun than humiliating now. Jeter agreed, adding with a smile, “I like the humiliating ones better.”

  44. Benny Blanco September 20th, 2009 at 10:02 pm

Bottom line is that the yankees should have sent joba down to AAA ( few starts) just so he could get some humble pie. Melky, Ian , Phil, all got sent down due to either ineffectiveness or injury. I agree that in 2010 joba has to earn his spot on the team.

    Great bit about Lemon.

I seem to remember Guidry wanting to quit at one point, and Bonnie Guidry supposedly talking him out of it. I saw Guidry a fair amount live in 1985, that last great season he had.

Exactly. I think he was playing at Syracuse at the time and told his wife to have the car packed when he got home from the park. They got as far as Harrisburg or around there, and his wife said, “Are you really sure this is what you want to do?” He said yes, and she told him to turn the car around and try it for one more season. Bless her sweet little heart.

It’s not a great question if it doesn’t get a real answer. Besides, no one wastes a “great” question with the cameras rolling.

What ticks the media off is Joba refusing to take the bait.

I have no problem with Joba not cozying up and crying on the media’s shoulders.

This certainly explains what went wrong with Drew Henson.

“The players always have fun with it, even the rookies. The one guy that I felt bad for was Drew Henson, who was the only rookie on the roster in the fall of 2002. He was forced to travel from Tampa to Detroit in a full wedding dress. Poor kid.”

We had a great time in SD. We were there for a wedding, but managed to squeeze in sightseeing and a tour of PETCO. The PETCO tour puts the YS tour to shame, I’m sad to say. Doreen, those were all the Catwomen, yep. Lee Meriweather was pretty good in the 1960′s Batman movie based on the tv series, but no one could ever top Julie Newmar. Not only was she gorgeous and sexy, but she even got the rolling “r” down (like when she would say “purrrrrfectly”). I never liked Eartha Kitt’s version. Oddly, Julie Newmar guest starred on an episode of Bewitched once as a witch who is really a cat.

  96. Betsy September 20th, 2009 at 10:57 pm

GB, I never liked Batgirl….Yvonne Craig was cute, but I always thought the character was a waste.

This year, I’m coming home from Charleston and Savannah very close to Halloween. I may have to do something simple, like Sherlock Holmes…….

LOL and I forgot – two years ago, I was a smurf.

  97. pat September 20th, 2009 at 10:58 pm

Edgewater Grill is the place. Good margaritas, good food, good view and good people watching on the “boardwalk’ in front of the patio. I’m jealous you were there!

  98. Doreen September 20th, 2009 at 10:59 pm

Eartha got the rolling r’s, too, but I agree, she was not my fav. Julie Newmar hands down. She was a tall woman, wasn’t she? :) She was the sexiest, and I thought the most “equal” to Batman.

That’s a great piece of trivia about the Bewitched guest spot.

What was great is we had no plans to go to Seaport Village, no plans to go to lunch there. We were thinking of Balboa Park, which we’d already been to last time out. My brother suggested the Seal Tour which goes from Seaport Village. Once we got there, we decided that after the tour we would hang out there and eat and just “happened” upon Edgewater Grille.

Thanks for that, PAT. Means a lot. I’m not sure that you really want to be likened to Randy, though. He’s just not right.

You’re right. a lot of funny and informative people from diverse backgrounds on here and all with one goal…..cheering for the yankees.

I’m aware that I can annoy folks, but, that’s me. Love me or hate me….you can’t ignore me, or, you can. I know there are at least three regs on here that don’t care for me at all, but, that hardly concerns me. I like the information available, but, I’d prefer it came without biases because of BS reasons like those that show up here. It’s really seldom that I read newspapers or internet stories because of those slanted views and biases. Just no use for that.

I’ve never tried to be a know-it-all, and all I’ve ever tried doing, like with reports on the kids is to tell what I see. I’ve been wrong, before and will again, but, if somebody asks, I’ll tell them what I see. I wish others with access to the young players and teams would give reports.

anyway, enough of that. Thanks again, PAT.

dennis, thank you. I did take your carolina/atlanta over, I forget what the other one was. I might have taken that one too? My day was undermined by the Packers.

Cal is now #6 in the land. Scary when there is so much farther to fall than there is to rise. Impossible for me, as a fan, not to look ahead to USC in two weeks… but Oregon in Eugene this weekend will be a handful too. I could honestly see us losing up there and then winning vs. USC at home… if we can beat them, we are then allowed one other loss.

Oh, and the sushi (sashimi, actually) was great. A little place in Cole Valley called Hama-ko.

  151. Wang IS Taiwan September 21st, 2009 at 1:09 am

Nick — I don’t usually eat fish, so forgive the dumb question. But what is the difference between sushi and sashimi?

  152. Nick von Clausewitz in SF September 21st, 2009 at 1:14 am

Sashimi is just the slice of fish, unadorned by rice. Sushi, I think, mainly comes in either a roll with rice and a seaweed wrap or semi-attached to a wad of rice.

The sashimi is just the same fish but all by itself. But it’s basically the same thing and sashimi falls under the sushi umbrella as a sub-category. My rice just came in a bowl.

With sushi rolls you also get mixtures of things.

  153. Pat M. September 21st, 2009 at 1:21 am

That game in Berkley in 2 weeks will be for the Roses ….Pac 10 is brutally strong this year with the rebirth of the Huskies…I knew they’d be improved, but didn’t expect them to bushwack the Trojans….Where do you play them ???

  154. Nick von Clausewitz in SF September 21st, 2009 at 1:25 am

We play UW in Seattle on December 5, two weeks after the Big Game at Stanford. It would be very difficult to go into Husky Stadium needing a win to clinch the Rose Bowl… I’ve seen a game there, very intimidating.

Lines are up at pinnacle… Cal -7.5 next week at Oregon, I don’t like that at all. USC -43 hosting Wazzou.

  155. Pat M. September 21st, 2009 at 1:33 am

Nick in SF, I can’t believe that conference games are being played in December and then to play @ Huskie Stadium….I’[ve been there as well, cold, wet and windy…..A very hostile environment, and it’ll be crazy there, as they haven’t had much to support in recent years…..

  156. Wang IS Taiwan September 21st, 2009 at 1:34 am

Many thanks, Nick. That was the clearest definition I’ve ever gotten.

My first experience with sushi came right after college when I worked for Mitsibishi and my boss “treated” me to a VERY expensive sushi bar for lunch. The darn stuff kept coming up on me(if you get my drift) and I just chugging down 7-up to get it to stay down. I had gone through two sodas before lunch was over. Finally, my very Japanese boss kindly asked the sushi chef to “cook” my fish. :) Not a very auspicious start to my limited sushi experience.

  157. Nick von Clausewitz in SF September 21st, 2009 at 1:45 am

No problem, Wang IS Taiwan. One more thing is that I think sashimi is always raw while some sushi can included cooked items. Not everyone likes sushi/sashimi, but it might be worth another shot, unless you don’t really like fish in general.

Pat M, I think the games spill into December because they added the extra game to the schedule… in years past each Pac-10 team would miss somebody in the conference, but now every team plays every other team. At least there will be a two-week break between the Stanford game and the game up in Seattle. It should be a great atmosphere for that one.

  158. m September 21st, 2009 at 1:48 am

    Wang,

For the squeamish, there’s other kinds of non-raw sushi. Unagi is eel basted with a teriyaki sauce. This a good one for the novice.

Then there’s California rolls with crabmeat, mayo, and avocado.

You really need to stop picking against my teams. It’s getting irritating already. Not a good weekend sportswise. Nearly every team I cheered for lost. Except for Rainbow Wahine volleyball, the Yankees behind CC, and the Steelers lost.

Hopefully, the Yankees win tomorrow. More importantly, though, is Pettitte comes through without any issues.

BTW, meant to ask you. Who was the first to call Phil, young Master Hughes?

I want to take credit for it, but I’ve seen you and Nick use it, so I could be wrong.

I take credit for Young Master Philip.

(sorry to answer a question addressed to another)

    Nick,

Feel like I need to eat more fish for health reasons, and sushi is pretty easy to buy here in Taiwan. They love Japanese food in Taiwan — even though it’s a lot more expensive.

    Hi m,

That California roll doesn’t sound bad. I think I’ve seen sthg like that here. Now unagi isn’t sthg I’ve tried. Thanks for the recommendation.

Gotta go back to work. I hate losses because it’s a bit of a downer for the rest of the day. I need to not care so much about the team, but I do. I admit I’m a rabid fan. Truthfully, I’d feel better if we could get back on our winning roll. We need to have a lot of confidence going into the playoffs.

    Nick,

I’ll wait for Pat M to confirm. Just kidding!

I’ve had access to pre-statehood birth records. Boys born in the territory of Hawaii were called “Master”. Just the cutest thing. Just like my Phil. ;)

Kepner had an interesting Bats entry today. Thought you might enjoy the comment by “Jeff S”. The NYT readers are very harsh on Joba. Nearly universally so. Bad fans.

He also compares Joba & Sergio since Aug. 1st. It’s pretty bad.

Commenter Jeff S is well off the mark.

    Falling asleep… goodnight.

m, I started the Young Master Phillip Hughes thing back during the off season……I clearly started calling him Young Master Hughes back in April when he was called up to pitch vs. Detroit…..Somewhere along the line many here believed that he was from a family of wealthy means….SJ44 made refernce to that by indicating that he was soft because of his life of priveledge….He’s just some kid who lives in Orange County in a upper Middle Class area of million dollar homes which really is the norm around the coastal area of OC…….Sorry to get back to you so late, but I was finishing up a RISK game…….Actually Betsy could provide you with the dates better than I…….

Should have made them fly commercial to complete the humiliation.
