Sotomayor to throw out first pitch
This from the Yankees:
The New York Yankees will hold two special ceremonial first pitches during the team’s final regular season homestand to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month.
United States Supreme Court Justice – and Bronx native – Sonia Sotomayor will throw out the game’s first pitch on Saturday, September 26, prior to the Yankees’ 4:10 p.m. game vs. the Red Sox.
Panama President Ricardo Martinelli will do the honor the night before, on Friday, September 25, prior to the Yankees’ 7:05 p.m. game vs. Red Sox.
————–
If you’re the president of Panama, one would assume that staying on the good side of Mariano Rivera is key to retaining power. One word from the Sandman and you’re out.
As for Judge Sotomayor, hopefully she will be able to take the time to rule on these thorny disputes that have long troubled the Yankees. The backlog of cases includes:
Cabrera v. Gardner.
Torre v. Levine
Mussina v. Pavano
Joba in the rotation v. Joba in the bullpen
UZR and WAR v. Intangibles and Leadership
Common sense v. Pitching Brian Bruney
Posada v. Burnett
Hal v. Hank

UZR and WAR v. Intangibles and leadership
____________________________________________________________
Whom are you referring to here pete?
Obviously pitching Brian Bruney wins out every time. Especially in close games.
“Common sense v. Pitching Brian Bruney”
Precident to that case:
“Common sense vs. Jose Veras”
Alex v. A-Rod.
Minka V. Kate
god hopefully your successor will be as funny and have as good a grasp of irony as you do!
Does she have the power to grant a stay of execution on the old Yankee Stadium?
Would she be willing to discuss the propriety of the rule that allows a runner to tag up on a foul ball? Or the infield fly rule?
“UZR and WAR v. Intangibles and leadership”
Weird, both think Derek Jeter should be #2 in the AL MVP (assuming you ignore SP, that is).
Jaret Wright v. Jon Lieber
Kevin Brown v. Wall and/or Toliet
Should I stay v. Should I go?
When’s your last day, Pete?
Common sense v pitching Brian Bruney, LOL! Good one Pete!
Justice Sotomayor, are you comfortable with the recent decision that dictates a runner is out at third in a non-force situation, despite not being tagged, simply because the ball beat him there?
Joe Girardi vs the Candy Machine
How about Flushing Money Down The Toilet v. Kei Igawa’s Contract
Judge Sotomayor should prevail over a session of the Kangaroo court…that would be interesting!
Oh, Pete. Just read some stupid comments by Bart Scott (who the hell is he?) about Tom Brady.
Can Sotomayor start game 4?
Can Bruney change his jersey number again from 99 to a symbol of a gasoline can being poured onto a fire?
Can Michael Kay call Edwar Ramirez’s fastball an “Elmer Fudd Fastball” to go with his “Bugs Bunny Change”?
Can we confirm that Scott Boras is indeed a Sith Lord who messes with the Yankees in his seats behind home plate in Anaheim?
hey Erica, were you able to find out how much one of those suites would cost?

LOL that is a good one.
Don’t forget the decision we here at the LoHud Blog are anxiously awaiting:
Jim Pir-one v. Sanity
How about:
Abreu vs. Wall
or
Torre vs. Proctor
Wow it has been awhile. How is the LoHud fam? Jeez. When are our guys gonna realize October is 10 days away and that mailing it in is not the best way to go into the heat of postseason action?
Justice Sotomayor, as a follow up to Mr. Jeter’s question, do you believe we’d be within our constitutional rights if were to waterboard Marty Foster?
This blog is in limbo, Yankee fans need satisfaction, like the conclusion to this regular season. And a fan beat writer to take over the blog..
Why can’t a objective fan of the team take over?!?!
“Jim Pir-one v. Sanity”
How flummoxed must he have been when the Royals came back from six runs down against Boston? What was left of his brain probably dripped out his nose after that one was over.

Walter Cronkite is rolling over in his grave right about now.
“Oh, Pete. Just read some stupid comments by Bart Scott (who the hell is he?) about Tom Brady.”
Jets have earned the right to display their stupidity loudly and proudly after Sunday’s game. Especially the defense.
As a law student, I find this post especially amusing, Pete.
Very proud of my Jets(sorry Pete). Brady looks like he is releasing the ball to quickly, obviously protecting that repaired knee.

Lol, Erica. I hear he’s hidden the ice cream in the catacombs of the old Stadium.
Mussina defiantly retired in protest.
Rex,
It’s called acting like you’ve been there.
But apparently Bart Scott’s always had problems with his emotions, so it’s not a Jets thing.
And it’s one game. Jeez. I know it broke a long home losing streak, but it’s one game.
And yes, the defense was terrific. But you wouldn’t expect anything less from Rex.
Good point Ed. H

I don’t remember that quote. Can you enlighten? The Girardi candy/ice cream stuff makes me chuckle. Reminds me of Herb Brooks sleuthing out his players to make sure their home thermostats were not above 65 degrees.
Actually, Pete, Mariano’s hometown (Puerto Caimito) was subject to some storm surge and flooding, which meant a number of Mariano’s friends and family were flooded out/lost material possessions.
Don’t be surprised if its Mariano asking Pres Martinelli to help his home town.

The defense was brilliant all day. Thought it was funny how Rhodes, after shooting his mouth off, never crowded the box. I think regarding Rhodes’ trash talk, that “If this be madness, there’s method in’t.”

As for the previous thread, we should totally sign Xavier Nady, just for roster flexibility. After we sign him, we can stash him on the 6-Day DL, which would then open up a roster spot otherwise taken up by Xavier Nady.
Think about it.
Erica, I hear Brian Cashman is a reader of the blog. I think someone should cut us a break or something. If we can knock it down about $10,000 I can probably afford to put it on my card. That will cut it down to like 200 a person.

jd,
Good journalists discipline themselves to keep their emotions out of their reporting. On the other hand, there is ESPN …
Blogging is a different creature from journalism. Bloggers freely express opinions and can be openly partisan. A reporter (as opposed to a columnist) must keep their opinions out of their writing and present information as objectively as possible.
A beat writer who blogs on the subject he is reporting on is in a difficult position. Someone like Pete has to maintain journalistic standards while being provocative enough to attract an audience and generate discussion. As a columnist does, within the profession of journalism, legitimately express opinions, so can a journalist/blogger. However, being a fan of the team you cover pushes things over the line, IMHO. There is a difference between expressing opinions and partisanship.
I don’t know whether or not Pete continues to be a fan of the Red Sox. He said that he was a fan of the team growing up, but that does not mean that he necessarily continues to root for the team today. He has said that covering the Yankees has been a very good experience for him. I think that his enthusiasm for his work has been obvious. He clearly has respect and affection for many in the Yankees organization. If he is a Red Sox fan, he has handled those feelings in a professional way. Because Pete is such a good journalist, his personal feelings haven’t mattered.
I wonder if she has the power to deport Igawa????
“Game 3 of the ALDS would be on the road?”
Playoff tickets are usually/always printed with the # of the home game, not the series game, since they are printed before the dates are set. So when it says game 3 on a ticket, it means the 3rd home game, not game 3 in the series. Ditto game 1 means the first game at home, not the series opener (if they’re not the same thing).

Thanks, Christina.
The 2001 ALDS was incredible. My brother and I were in great Plaza level seats behind home plate a bit up the first base side, which turned out to give us the perfect view of the iconic Jeter play. Slide, Jeremy, slide!
The next game was actually a bit anticlimactic. There was a long delay when Jermain Dye fouled a pitch off himself and broke his ankle (or something). El Duque was the Yankee starter and pitched okay, but the Yankee bats told the tale that day.

Danke, mike eff.
After its spectacular failure vs. Joe Saunders last night, I would hope Girardi would realize that the Schlieffen plan of heavily fortifying the right side is not worth surrendering the bat of Hideki Matsui, especially in the trenches of Los Angeles of Anaheim.

Night game before a day game.
Do we go offense and have Posada catch?
As I sat in the rightfield corner last night and watched in disbelief as Brian Bruney’s grooved pitch to Morales sailed at least 50 feet over the head of Nick Swisher…..It sailed into darkeness of the overhead night sky, only to reappear some 30 rows up in the bleachers……Flashback of Roy Hobb’s final home run into the dark night filled my mind…..
Erica, I think we’ll see Molina either tonight or tomorrow.
The Yanks really should win tonight so they may demonstrate to the enemy the improbability of their initial victory by obtaining a subsequent victory.
Ya know what I’m saying?
The Molina start last night might have been influenced by Posada’s sore neck. Presumably Jorge will catch tonight and Matsui will be back in the lineup, but who knows.
Pat M, you might need to go to the Bronx to witness a Yankee victory.

I was thinking the same thing. I was guessing Posada Dhing last night had more to do with the sore neck than Angels. But we will never really know
I hear ya, Bronx Jeers. I’ve thought a lot about tonight’s game, and my personal feeling is that the first and most important rule to observe…is to use our entire forces with the utmost energy. The second rule is to concentrate our power as much as possible against that section where the chief blows are to be delivered and to incur disadvantages elsewhere, so that our chances of success may increase at the decisive point. The third rule is never to waste time. Unless important advantages are to be gained from hesitation, it is necessary to set to work at once. By this speed a hundred enemy measures are nipped in the bud, and public opinion is won most rapidly. Finally, the fourth rule is to follow up our successes with the utmost energy. Only pursuit of the beaten enemy gives the fruits of victory.
I think that means we need both Posada and Matsui. And maybe Gardner.
I think Girardi is in his heart a pacifist. Last year he imposed a team wide hunger strike (no candy, ice cream). This year he seems to be using the sit-in tactic (no Matsui).
This isn’t do or die, but the Yankees very much need a win tonight. The beauty of baseball is that sometimes the most improbable things can happen. Gaudin outpitching Santana qualifies as one of those things.

Brian Cashman, this is where you come in my friend. Help some loyal Yankee fans out. We don’t need too much free food either. Just a price a little lower than 355 dollars a person.
When does it become do or die? (Just asking – you all know my feelings, I think.)
Pat M-
I ran some numbers. You are 0-6 in Yankee attendence this season. That is 10.71% of total Yankee losses. And you do not even live in New York!!!!
Maybe you should reconsider. LOL
Girardi has this thing about bringing Bruney into a game against the Angels to put it out of reach.
I can’t really say I’m afraid of the Angels, because their “A” pen is so god awful. Some more patient ABs would have yielded an earlier entrance for said BP. Oh well. The Yankees are clearly gassed about now. They’ll ramp up again sooner or later.
That’s a serious black cloud following you around Pat M. Were I you, I’d hire a taste tester and have someone else start your car for you.
I have a friend who had been blaming himself for a few years for bringing the team bad luck on Saturday home games.
He said “you always seem to bring them luck.”
I told him, Dennis, I avoid Saturday day after Friday night games like the plague. They are an older team; they don’t rebound well after playing on Friday night.
He was resolved to cling to his martyrdom, until he went to a few Sunday afternoon games this season. I said “You see! It’s not YOU!”
He reluctantly agreed.
One of the partners in my office came over to talk Yankees with me earlier.
I complained of being tired since I stayed up for last nights game. He asked why I didn’t just DVR it. I explained that everytime I DVR a Yankee game its a loss. He walked away shaking his head
“Girardi has this thing about bringing Bruney into a game against the Angels to put it out of reach.”
Probably would have used Robertson if he were healthy. He Seems to like Aceves when the Yankees are tied or ahead, and Aceves has generally been weak when entering a game with the Yankees trailing. Melancon? Noticed he hasn’t been seen since plunking Hill.
Guess my point is if it’s not going to be Mo, Hughes, or Aceves in that spot, and Robertson is unavailable, who’s trustworthy enough to send out there?
I vote for Sotomayor as #4 starter.

Interesting. Do you know the teams Saturday stats?
Erica, I’ve seen them lose in Seattle, Oakland, & of course here in Orange County…..This is nuts
I’m sick of the Yankees on the west coast. It’s lame. There should be one west coast trip all season, and those teams come to the bronx, and that’s that. it’s too much. I doubt many of the players like the west coast trips, either. I can’t blame them. This group of Yankees haven’t played the Angels in the playoffs, and that’s when it matters. This year we have a better team than they do. In the past when we’ve been dominated by them, they’ve been better than us, plain and simple. I don’t care if this team loses a million straight regular season games in Anaheim. When the chips are down and playoff time rolls around, we’ll beat them, whether it’s in their stadium or ours. These games don’t mean anything. We had a big enough home field cushion coming in where it doesn’t even really matter if we get swept. I’m not worried. This Angels team is not intimidating. Their pitching isn’t nearly as good as it has been in the past. They will get bounced in the first round probably, and we won’t even have to worry about them at all.
All we have to do is just somehow win the division – it doesn’t even matter if we hold off the Angels for best record. If we can just get the division, Boston will oust the Angels and get them out of our hair.
Pat M – Tonight and tomorrow too?? Oh, Jeebus. Go Kansas City!

The Melancon thing is where this sort of began, via our last WC trip. Melancon came in and gave up a run (inherited, I believe) and then was on the verge of getting the inning under control – I know he induced a groundout and was looking good. Bizarrely, Girardi summoned Bruney, who promptly gave up a shot, putting what was a winnable game out of reach.
I like Melancon, & I think he should have been brought up much sooner. He wouldn’t be battling such command problems and feeling the weight of the world every seventeenth day he pitches, had they done this. Getting him entrenched would have given us another quality arm, and one that is more of a GB than FB guy. Now, it’s too late, and every infrequent appearance is like some desperation mission to not have to wait another 17 days to pitch.
Re: Saturdays
In addition to probably being the only day of the week where the Yankees have a losing record, it is also accounts for 6 of the 8 games in which the Yankees have allowed 12 or more runs.
Interesting. Do you know the teams Saturday stats?

Not off the top of my head, Erica. I’m sure we’ve improved somewhat, because we have gotten younger, and our pitching is much better. But we have had brutal long-in-the-sun Saturday games that just run completely away from us. If you’re so inclined to pull the stats, I’d be interested to see.
How many of the Sat games were on FOX? They seemed to be the jinx for awhile.

Ah, thanks. Good thing our Saturday game this week is a 4 and not a 1 p.m. Still, I love the way we just happen to be playing Boston after jumping time zones again.
Two of three we’re likely to take, however.
Moral of Story: Don’t opt for Saturday game plan (even though they’re not available, LOL).
Bodhi:
I remember that game. Melancon came on following a Joba implosion that turned a 5-1 Yankees lead to a 5-5 tie. Melancon inherited a runner but got to ground outs. He came back on and gave up 2 earned runs when a couple bloops were sandwiched around a triple by Figgins. His last inning was extended by an E-6 and Girardi did bring on Bruney who promptly went walk/homer and pretty much sealed the deal. I thought Melancon was a mixed bag that day, but when he was pulled, he seemed to have it going on.
Hey all! It seems that my posts take a little longer than usual to show up. I think it may be because someone tried to pirate my account and Pete is being vigilant in making sure that my posts are connected to my account. I appreciate that by the way. Thanks Pete. (Either that or I am swearing a lot without knowing it!)
In any event, if my posts show up a little late in terms of context, you’ll understand why.
This one has no context to the present thread but I still wanted to share it with you. When I was driving today I was listening to WEEI and it would have done any NY fan’s heart good to hear it. Naturally they are bemoaning the Pats loss. But on top of it, there is a lot of bridge jumping over the loss to KC. This is the way the hosts presented it in an attempt to try to get the Boston fans to chill. To take the division, the Sux would have to go 12 and 2 while the Yankees played 500 baseball.
Now kids, whose case would you rather have? In addition the Yanks are one game away from clinching a playoff berth. The Sux are 7 games away from doing the same.
If anything should make you rest a little easy, it is the above information. And don’t forget that the Yankees could be 2 additional games up on the 2nd place team but for Rick Reed and an aberrant performance from Mo. What I am pointing out is that normalcy and reality would have had the Yanks typically taking the game the Mariners won in the 9th inning and the Angels taking the game the Sux won in the 9th inning. I THINK we can count on normalcy and reality more than aberrant happenings. I still have total faith in the Yanks ability to take it all.
For the less convinced I will continue to remind you about the Yankees backing into the last postseason they won the world series where in 2 weeks they blew an astrononmical lead and won the division with little time left to go, based not on a Yankee win but on a Sux loss. And they still went on to win the world series. Try to look at the body of work and not a weeks worth of baseball.
GO KC!
Great call Pat M. You called 2 out of 3 for KC. With Zack going tonight I think that is a safe bet. Wouldn’t it be a hoot if it ended up being 3 out of 3?
Girardi isn’t completely anti-sugar.
He confessed to Kay that he ate Apple Jacks for breakfast and told AJ that he would prefer a banana cream pie instead of the customary whipped cream one he usually delivers if he was ever going to get him.
I see a theme, sugar is okay as long as it’s balanced with fruit in the ingredients.
TWO groundouts! Duh!
Wow, these posts are making me really excited to go to the game on saturday ( note the sarcasm people). The only consolation is that I won’t have to listen to the fox announcers.
I can’t complain though, I am 5-1 so far this season (coincidentally my only loss was a Fox saturday game vs. the Mets)

Right. Your memory is much better than mine.
What troubled me about that game was Girardi not being able to read his own pitcher, because the storm had passed, and he had things under control. For the sake of that game, and for the sake of the player’s sorting of being deprived of an opportunity to cross a certain initial threshhold in the majors, I was livid at Girardi.
I was actually in this IGT that night, and me, Brandon and I believe, Trevor were going berserk as soon as he pulled Melancon & brought in Bruney.
Girardi’s letter as opposed to spirit of the law BP management is, at times, costly, but I think strategically the Yankees missed a larger opportunity to get a very good BP arm entrenched, and one that can pitch back-to-back innings. That ship has sailed for 2009, unfortunately, and I don’t get Girardi’s reluctance to bring that kid in to low leverage situations to make him comfortable for bigger things.
Puzzling.
NYY626,
At least Saturday’s game is the rare 4 p.m. start. That puts a bit more distance between that game and the previous night’s, so you should be OK. I’ll be at that one, too.
sort of, not sorting of…
pavano vs pitching rubber
Sotomayor? Booooooooooo
Oh, so suddenly “Joba in the rotation v. Joba in the bullpen” isn’t so clear-cut, is it, PA?
