8 stands for how many hits cano has with risp

  2. Matt17 September 22nd, 2009 at 12:45 am

Am I allowed to get nuts now that we wont win teh division. This team is choking big time and I blame the manager because he started coasting way too early. Win something before you coast.

    Who cares?

  4. jsbrendog September 22nd, 2009 at 12:47 am

Not canos fault that girardi threw that game

Good thing Boston lost. Otherwise the loss would feel even worse. If Andy comes out of the start ok than that is a plus also. But the offense needs to get going and they see Kazmir on Sunday who they haven’t hit recently.

  6. Joker, The September 22nd, 2009 at 12:48 am

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. This team is playing awful baseball. And that’s putting it nicely.

  7. Matt17 September 22nd, 2009 at 12:51 am

only saving grace is if the Yankees go 5-6 next 11. Boston needs to go 11-2 to tie. Dont know if Yankees can win 5 of the next 11 though.

RELAX – apology for the capital letters but absolutely necessary

we got the division and we’ll be rested for the playoffs – i think we need more rest for regulars like a-rod and matsui that would definitely benefit based on prior evidence

One gripe with management is the matchup with the lineups that haven’t worked that i can remember since … ever

  10. Dr. Cox September 22nd, 2009 at 12:52 am

Right. this is the team we’re supposed to beat in the post season.

    Why cant we beat them???

  11. Abdababdaserser September 22nd, 2009 at 12:53 am

Maybe Cashman needs to give another talk.

I agree that Girardi started resting everyone far too early. While there is a problem with clinching too early, there is a bigger problem coasting toward the postseason. They are dropping too many series lately, and that isn’t a good trend.

  12. 100 pitches of fun... September 22nd, 2009 at 12:53 am

These 6 games is really the worst time for the offense to go into a major funk. Taking Matsui out of the lineup was really bad. Now they had 2 automatic outs at the bottom of the order instead of 1. They need Molina behind the plate with a righty on the mound not a lefty. Is Girardi managing nervous or panicking??

  13. 100 pitches of fun... September 22nd, 2009 at 12:58 am

    What is Kay wearing?

  14. Jobamania September 22nd, 2009 at 12:59 am

The car is about to stall, girardi needed to give a blip. Instead he decided to take a scorching bat out of the lineup and insert molina behind the plate with andy on the mound. Andy actually works well with posada and he actually holds runners well. There was no need for molina, it would have been better to start him tomorrow with Gaudin who could use all the help he can get framing pitches and with runners.

Not only did he take a bat out, he decided to use the mop up team in a 2 run game that was in the 7th inning, not the 5th, not the 6th, the 7th! I understand coke and robertson were not available, and thank god coke wasnt since he is putrid as well, but you have aceves, hughes, and mo. In a game like this when you know their closer is not even close to a lock you need to do your best to keep the game where it is.

Girardi cost us this game and this isn’t anything new, its happened too many times already.

  15. Matt17 September 22nd, 2009 at 12:59 am

Chad- when can we start to worry when the Sox take ove the divison lead? Hate to break it to you but we are on the verge of a major chock job thanks to our fearless leader. I have said it a 100 times. This team won in spite of the manager. Tell me 1 game he won because of teh way he managed the team. You cant. But I can tell you several that he has lost for this team.

  16. Matt DiBari September 22nd, 2009 at 1:00 am

I’d like to hear the thought process behind bringing in the D relievers in a close game

  19. lil' m September 22nd, 2009 at 1:03 am

Nice to see the magic # dropping despite the Yankees’ best efforts to the contrary lol. It is puzzling why Joe G used Bruney, but there’s probably some good reason … I hope. They certainly do have a knack for coming up short in this particular venue even when opportunities present themselves. Michael Kay made a good insight in the postgame show about the Yankees trying to get the regular season over with being part reason for the poor play right now. Now would be a good time for them to wake up.

  20. Jobamania September 22nd, 2009 at 1:04 am

I did. The throw beat Gardner and if figgins catches it he is out and we are roasting Girardi instead of praising him. I thought it was a stupid move that worked.

  23. nature boy September 22nd, 2009 at 1:06 am

so joe says he was trying to win putting in bruney and says if he wasn’t trying he wouldn’t have put in matsui

  24. stuart September 22nd, 2009 at 1:06 am

what is suprising about Bruney giving up a run or Cano and the team sucking with RISP????

Nothing.. Bruney does not deserve to be on the postseason roster he has been horrible for 2 months or more. Cano maybe needs a new approach with RISP.. WHat the hell do I know but 204 vs 320 with no one on base, you think that einstein has a clue????

Arod with the K in the first inning, a guy with all that talent is a guess hotter, staggering….

2 runs against king felix, 1 against snell, and 2 today. the risp hitting #’s the last 4 or 5 games has been horrible…lucky the sux blew there game….hey maybe Joba can give some tips to Bruney on how to pitch effectively!!!!!!!!!

Bruney should not be on the postseason roster under any circumstances he sucks………

  25. Rocco September 22nd, 2009 at 1:06 am

Ok so with your logic, every move that Girardi makes that works is luck?

C’mon the team has 95 wins and they are going to make the playoffs and win the division. Stop complaining. I’d rather them slump now then 2 weeks from now.

  26. xoxo September 22nd, 2009 at 1:07 am

Gardner should have pinched hit for Cano,if Joe was thinking.

  27. Abdababdaserser September 22nd, 2009 at 1:07 am

The approach was good? Really? Only three players got hits. That isn’t a good approach. Hitting the ball hard means nothing if it results in 1-2-3 innings.

    Sometimes Girardi is clueless.

No, they didn’t swing the bats pretty good. They allowed a mediocre pitcher to have almost a complete game.

  28. Jobamania September 22nd, 2009 at 1:07 am

how did no one ask him about albaladejo? wow, clueless writers

  29. Dr.M September 22nd, 2009 at 1:08 am

I can care less about Sox. I am worried about choking out the overall home advantage to Angels, which is 4.5 GB after today.
Does anyone think Yankees can win a single game in LA if they face Angels in ALCS? There is some possibility winning in Boston. In LA? Zero.
About the whole bullpen, why not just carry Aceves, Hughes and MO had we faced Angels? The rest of bullpen will just get lit up, as always.
    Bruney, Marte, Coke, all blow.

  30. Jobamania September 22nd, 2009 at 1:08 am

“Ok so with your logic, every move that Girardi makes that works is luck? ”

every move is a gamble. gamble is based on luck.

  31. DJJP0220 September 22nd, 2009 at 1:08 am

I’m sorry but why is gardner not playing??? Melky is 1 for his last 50 at bats it feels like, gardner can atleast make somthing happen with his speed. Not to mention why is molina catching tonight?? Posada had 4 of the last 5 days off so rest obviously wasn’t the issue.

  32. stuart September 22nd, 2009 at 1:10 am

Molina is a 300 OBP hitter. FOr a good catcher you figure he would be able to figure out what the pitcher will throw….

pitch; cc, andy, and aj in the playoffs.

the pen is; mo, hughes, robertson, gaudin, joba(does not deserve it), coke, marte, aceves, and 1 more…bruneys WHIP is Farnsworth like….

  33. Matt17 September 22nd, 2009 at 1:10 am

did i say every move was luck? No. I said that move was a bad one that worked. Again, If the ball is caught Gardner is OUT. And all of us are going crazy about the move.

Ok I will give you this one. Give me one other one that he has won for this team.

  34. vinny-b September 22nd, 2009 at 1:10 am

really?? I see 95 wins and 56 losses. I think his decisions has worked out.

  38. Jobamania September 22nd, 2009 at 1:11 am

i think its time cervelli moves up the ladder to #2 catcher. Molina is just PUTRID offensively, he has zero speed and just a disgusting batting approach. Maybe i’m blind but cervelli has actually done pretty well offensively, he’s no posada but he’s better than molina offensively and he actually has some speed.

bringing in bruney isn’t nearly as bad as albaladejo, this guy has never been good, why the f was he in there

    ——————————–

Exactly Bruney was being used in the 7th inning Joe been mixing and matching him with Coke. Putting in Albaledejo in the 8th was so odd. I thought he was going to use Marte for Abreu and then bring in Aceves in the 8th which is why using Bruney in the 7th made some sense.

Oh is that right? With all of our players having the years they are having, they have won the 95 games, not girardi. I’m sorry but Girardi doesn’t decide how well jeter/damon/teix/arod/swisher/matsui are hitting

Hughes wanted to be in the pen, and i’m sure cashman was involved there also. Girardi is hardly the mastermind here

ok so if Torre is still the coach right now, do the yankees have more win?

  48. Yanks_Fan September 22nd, 2009 at 1:14 am

Cooling of before the start of the postseason, with the division and the HFA still in play is not a pretty sight, and there is no denying the Yanks are slumping big and seem to just want the season to be over.

But the point is, this games are huge and we keep playing like we don’t care. Girardi can say all he wants, but in the postseason, if the relievers he goes to in a close game are Bruney and Albaladejo, he needs a psychological exam.

The offense is so-so. They sometimes get many hitters in scoring position, but once there, it seems they can’t get the big hit. It has happened to them many times this season, but not much after the ASB until now.

The Yankees better come out firing and wanting to make a statement tomorrow. They are way better than they have shown lately.

  49. nature boy September 22nd, 2009 at 1:15 am

yeah they didn’t want to send hughes down when wang came back so they just threw him in the pen and it worked out no girardi points on that one

  50. CB September 22nd, 2009 at 1:15 am

Girardi to Susan on why he brought in Bruney instead of Aceves:

“I don’t like to bring in Ace when we’re losing.”

    That’s quite something.

    They were down 3-1.

Susan said that the context of the statement was that Girardi was saying that he’s done it this way all season and wasn’t going to start doing anything differently now.

So Aceves doesn’t come in when the team is losing. A team down 3-1 with a team OPS+ of 140 or so in innings 7-9, facing a team with Brian Fuentes as the closer.

On the flip side the relievers do have very well defined roles so they can sleep better at night and not have to worry about getting jarred from their comfort zones.

And that’s what matters – reliever roles.

  51. Jobamania September 22nd, 2009 at 1:15 am

“ok so if Torre is still the coach right now, do the yankees have more win?”
Probably around the same. Torre is even worse than girardi.

  54. 100 pitches of fun... September 22nd, 2009 at 1:17 am

It’s funny how defensive Girardi gets when they ask him questions about his managing decisions. They ask him a simple question and he gets so tense and testy. Like they aren’t allowed to ask him why he brought in a guy like Bruney who never gets guys out.

  55. Jobamania September 22nd, 2009 at 1:18 am

I’m tired of girardis “tommorow’s a new day” talk.

how about you focus on winning games TODAY

  56. Jeremy September 22nd, 2009 at 1:21 am

Can they please DFA Bruney, Alba, and Edwar. Get some new pitchers. A team like the Yankees shouldn’t have players like that on their team.

  57. Bo Knows September 22nd, 2009 at 1:22 am

It’s immaterial whether Bruney and Albo were in or not. The Yankees scored two runs, endit Basta. The starter went into the ninth inning. They did not compete, swung at pitches out of the zone etc. Yelling at Girardi does nothing, he’s not out on the field.

  58. eric September 22nd, 2009 at 1:24 am

    —————-

That statement truly is troubling. What relievers exactly do pitch when the Yankees are down? Rivera does not, Hughes no, Ace I guess not (this is news to me btw). Maybe Robertson?

There is absolutely no reason to have 3 relievers reserved for only when the team is winning. Rivera yes. Everyone else should be pitching in close games ESP. in the playoffs.

This team has the most come from behind wins in baseball. You would think Joe would think hmm if I go to one of my better relievers here we have a really great chance of winning.

If the Yankees are down lets say 3-2 or 3-1 in the playoffs and Joe does not use Ace or Hughes I think I might lose it.

Of course tho those guys are much more valuable when the Yankees are up 3 runs b/c its a save situation. Right…

  60. Backbench September 22nd, 2009 at 1:29 am

We need to give props to KC for keeping this evening marginally positive.

The likelihood that TX wins out is 0, so the real question for Erica is when to start the ‘Guess the PS roster’ contest.

clowns they play 162 games they all count the same, a cliche but true… go to sleep little boys it is past your bed times…….

  64. Matt DiBari September 22nd, 2009 at 1:33 am

stuart, maybe instead of worrying about what a great new day tomorrow is going to be, he could have tried to win today. Sending in the mop up screw in a two run game is insane.

  65. Bo Knows September 22nd, 2009 at 1:35 am

Why is there all this squawking about Girardi. The offense is playing like crap. Against better pitching they have scored 5 runs in 3 of the last four games. Teix and Cano rolled over four times each on low outside pitches. Must be Girardi’s fault.

  66. XLJ September 22nd, 2009 at 1:40 am

Girardi cant use Hughes 3 days in a row. So I can understand him being used when you are in a tie game or have the lead. But not using Aceves in the 8th instead of Albaledejo was crazy.

  67. Bo Knows September 22nd, 2009 at 1:40 am

I can predict that Teix and Cano will see a steady diet of low and away pitches over the next two games. We’ll see how they make out.

  68. Bo Knows September 22nd, 2009 at 1:42 am

Gaudin is pitching tomorrow, Aceves is shadowing Gaudin. Why is this that hard to understand?

  69. 100 pitches of fun... September 22nd, 2009 at 1:45 am

It seems that Aceves’ only job is for Joba’s mop up duty. He used to pitch all the time and now only once a week. He could of pitched the 7th and 8th inning.

  70. Scared of the Wall September 22nd, 2009 at 1:46 am

Does the farm system or Yankees PR team tell the players to act confident and arrogant despite the fact that they played like crap? I just don’t understand.

Kennedy last season, Joba this season, and now Bruney. All denying that they sucked and brushing it off as if they had a good outing.

It’s OK to be angry at yourself and admit you made a mistake. Taking some of the blame is more admirable and mature than denying it. Some of these youngsters should take a few pages out of Andy or Mo’s book when it comes to post-game interviews…

  71. Matt DiBari September 22nd, 2009 at 1:47 am

Its hard to understand saving Aceves for a Gaudin implosion when he can be used in a close game right now.

  72. Johnny D. September 22nd, 2009 at 1:48 am

Bruney is such a joke. So is Joba at this point. I’d almost rather have Mitre pitch.

  73. m September 22nd, 2009 at 1:52 am

Oh, what a day. What a week. Whatever malaise this team is in, I’d wish they’d snap out of it. I wonder if this has anything to do with Mo’s blown save? They went into a funk the last time, too. (just kidding for the most part)

I don’t know what part of Saunders screams Felix Hernandez or Josh Beckett approach should be taken. I would’ve liked to see the Yankees be a little more patient, and get a good pitch to hit. And I definitely would like to have seen more of that Angel bullpen.

But thank goodness 1000x that the Red Sox collapsed tonight (doesn’t that have a nice ring to it?). Otherwise there would be panic in the streets (and rightfully so). The Sox bought us another day on the calendar.

Didn’t watch the whole game, but it was nice to see Andy bear down a bit there. Got no issues of taking him out after only 6 innings, since he had shoulder fatigue the last couple of weeks.

Bruney. That may have been the last straw. I wouldn’t object to him being on any post-season roster, as long as we don’t see him. But why not give his spot to Guzman?

That would allow us to start Gardner with/or in lieu of Cabrera.

Cabrera’s the better hitter, but Gardner brings his own skill set, too.

Finally, game on the line? Title on the line? You going to let Cano hit? Or bring someone off the bench to pinch hit? 99 times out of a 100 you say let Cano swing away. But it hurts when he’s the last out. It shouldn’t be that way, but it’s more and more apparent that his RISP average is a glaring hole in his game.

    Oh, Ca-no!

  74. Carl September 22nd, 2009 at 2:03 am
