Game 152: Yankees at Angels, Part II

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Sep 23, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

We’re up over 1,100 comments, seems like we should break up the game post.

It’s the bottom of the eighth inning with the score tied at 5-5.

It could be a long one.

UPDATE, 1;14 a.m.: Hughes gets out of the jam with the score tied. Will Girardi use Mo in the ninth? His history suggests no.

UPDATE, 1:19 a.m.: Gritty, Gutty Brett Gardner has to steal second one would assume.

UPDATE, 1:21 a.m.: Not even a pitch out can defeat Brett Gardner.

UPDATE, 1:24 a.m.: Damon to face Darren Oliver. Yankees need a run here to get Mo in the game.

UPDATE, 1:28 a.m.: Slap in the face to Alex, walking Tex to get to him.

UPDATE, 1:30 a.m.: Alex continues a huge night with a sac fly. Yankees lead again, 6-5. Mo getting ready.

UPDATE, 1:46 a.m.: Mo gets the job done. Man, that was torture The Yankees are just celebrating like it was a regular win.

Its truly mind boggling how we cannot beat this team.

    Mind boggling.

Yankees could really use a hard fought win tonight for sure.

  4. Yup September 23rd, 2009 at 1:06 am

    Can the Yankees Luuuuuuuuuuughes??

  5. Yankee44 September 23rd, 2009 at 1:07 am

It’s getting to the point where they should just forfeit the road trips to Anaheim and rest the players who need it. It’d be a whole heck of a lot more productive :-P

Why throw a 3-1 FB? Izturis was looking for that in a hitters count. Throw a breaking ball there.

  8. The Phranchise September 23rd, 2009 at 1:07 am

    Figures errors kill them here.

Just don’t understand …… if we can’t win tonight, how do we get out of the first round.

The Yanks make this team look like the greatest team of all time. I glad the offense went to sleep hours ago.

    Kill that damn Rally Monkey.

  13. Paul V September 23rd, 2009 at 1:08 am

A HUGE tie game in the 8th inning and Brian Bruney is up to throw in the bullpen?

Sorry, Joe G., but that’s going to send me to bed.

Until they stop trotting out Bruney, Marte and Mitre, I’ll have some issues with these guys.

  14. igotid88 September 23rd, 2009 at 1:08 am

    we should’ve had defensive replacements.

Thank got the Red Sox dropped two against the Royals. Otherwise the Yanks would be in big trouble right now.

    Commit errors. Pitch horribly.

    Not hard to figure out.

  27. Aura September 23rd, 2009 at 1:09 am

How many games has this Yankee team lost due to the absense of Robertson?

  28. Carl September 23rd, 2009 at 1:09 am

    The Yanks are a joke.

  29. Abdababdaserser September 23rd, 2009 at 1:09 am

What the heck is with this team? This is frustrating.

Come on Hughes … you can DO IT.

  30. G. Love September 23rd, 2009 at 1:09 am

Great. Turk Wendell up in the pen again.

  31. Pepitone September 23rd, 2009 at 1:10 am

Like I said, the Yankee pitchers are absolutely scared to death to throw a strike to these guys.

Even if they throw a great pitch, they hammer it to right field.

  32. eric September 23rd, 2009 at 1:10 am

this is totally pathetic. how many times are we going to blow big leads to the angels!

  33. Sean Serritella September 23rd, 2009 at 1:10 am

Hey Nick. I’m ready. Where’s your buddy, “matt?” lol.

  34. Aura September 23rd, 2009 at 1:10 am

It’s basically a mental thing at this point. Scioscia is inside of Girardi’s head and that funnels down to he rest of the team.

  35. RMEL September 23rd, 2009 at 1:10 am

30 pitches for hughes and one out nice….you will not see him tomorrow

  36. JZ September 23rd, 2009 at 1:10 am

Huge question mark when Hughes faces the top hitters in tight situations.
oh wait, are LAA batters top ones?

  37. Mehdi also in SF September 23rd, 2009 at 1:10 am

No it won’t be a long one because we’re giving up the go ahead run before this inning is over and will go out meekly in the 9th. This teams performance against the Angels is one of the most frustrating things on earth with the Israeli/ Palestinian conflict following close behind.

  38. 100 pitches of fun... September 23rd, 2009 at 1:10 am

Stop throwing Vlad strikes!! He will chase the down and away pitch.

  39. Yanks_Fan September 23rd, 2009 at 1:11 am

I don’t want my Yankees to be pressing because the season is ending and the playoffs are close. I hate it when they do that and it’s really looking that way with this embarrassing display in the last few innings.

  40. trisha - OPPC lifetime member who is missing the worry gene September 23rd, 2009 at 1:11 am

I’m not mad and I still believe the Yanks can take this game. Tough to blame Hughes for two errors that he didn’t commit!

  41. Mac Daddy September 23rd, 2009 at 1:12 am

you all worrying bout the pen tomorrow, enough…you win this game and you are fine…besides, its bout time aj gave us 8 innings of 2 run ball

  42. Dr. Cox September 23rd, 2009 at 1:12 am

    “The Yanks are a joke.”

    Carl, please leave.

You obviously know nothing about baseball.

    Dearest New York Yankees,

It’s been a very long night. Its 1:10am here in New York. Your loving fans have stayed up past their bedtimes to see this game tonight. Please win. I don’t mind staying up late to watch these games, but its horrible the next day when I am sleepy and sad over your loss. So please, let’s win this game. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

    Sincerely Yours,
    Erica

  44. The Phranchise September 23rd, 2009 at 1:12 am

Inside of who’s head? We do realize the pitchers tonight were Guadin, Aceves, Marte and now Hughes. The first three don’t exactly instill fear in the opposition.

I guess Hughes was too afraid to throw strikes to Vlade there?

  45. Sean Serritella September 23rd, 2009 at 1:12 am

I met a cute oriental woman in the laundry room tonight but I blew it. She seemed interested in talking to me but I told her, “I had to go.” I have no clue why I did that.

If Hughes puts Hunter on base they have to take him out. He is throwing too many pitches.

  52. djsunyc September 23rd, 2009 at 1:13 am

that hard grounder to cano ate him up…but that posada throw to 2nd was…wow…

  53. Former Box 607 September 23rd, 2009 at 1:13 am

What is really amazing is how many pitches the Angels see and how many pitches they foul off. They are pests.

  56. Jeremy September 23rd, 2009 at 1:13 am

I am sick of this. They should not even show up tom. Just quit and go back home. This team can’t beat the Angels in Anaheim. And Girardi once again failed to use his good arms in the pen so they wouldn’t be rusty creating this situation.

I BELIEVE IN PHIL HUGHES AND THE YANKEES!!!

Tough to get down on Hughes when two errors were committed behind him. I believe in the Yankees because they are the best team in baseball.

As I posted earlier but who knows where that post is, won’t it be even sweeter when the Angels come all the way back and the Yanks win the game?

    GO YANKEES!!!

  61. The Phranchise September 23rd, 2009 at 1:14 am

Hughes coughing up the lead? He saved the prior inning and if Cano can make that play or Jorge can not throw the ball into center, Yankees would still be up.

  62. Carl September 23rd, 2009 at 1:14 am

nice Job Phil. Way to fail Yankee defense!

  63. G. Love September 23rd, 2009 at 1:14 am

Phil did his job. Great, gutsy performance, marred by a terrible, untimely error.

And now we have to score a run, because if we don’t, Bruney “pitches” the 9th.

  71. DYNASTY IS DESTINY! September 23rd, 2009 at 1:15 am

    We can still win this!!!!!

    Let’s Go Yanks!!!!!

  72. Abdababdaserser September 23rd, 2009 at 1:15 am

    YES!

Hughes did his part, no thanks to Cano. He got the outs. Now the Yankee bats have to get working again.

  73. GreenBeret7 September 23rd, 2009 at 1:15 am

Everyone’s yammering about Cano’s error on the bullet, but, as hard as it was, he should have gotten it, and Posada made a throw off line, but, Jeter made little effort to knock it down. Definately three players at fault, there.

  74. Jeremy September 23rd, 2009 at 1:15 am

No excuses for Posada or Cano. They failed ! No one here should be making excuses for them.

  75. RalphieD (OPPC) September 23rd, 2009 at 1:15 am

good job by hughes…if he got defense the yanks would still be winning..

  76. The Phranchise September 23rd, 2009 at 1:15 am

And here come the trolls. Funny thing though, Yankees even in this slump have the best record in baseball.

  77. terpbomber September 23rd, 2009 at 1:15 am

Facing the Angels is like playing the Mariners circa the 1995 ALDS. No lead is ever safe. I can’t stand that relentlessness. And that bleeping rally monkey!

That 5-0 lead was nice, if a little too early since they haven’t added much to it since those runs.

  78. Donnie - Will Meet The Entire State of California Under the O'Neill Banner September 23rd, 2009 at 1:15 am

Anybody remember that “Faces of Death” monkey video?

YES. My God, yes. I remember seeing that in 8th grade and cracking up.

Maaaaaan, Faces of Death was AWESOME.

  79. pat September 23rd, 2009 at 1:16 am

Bruney being up is just a threat to motivate the offense.

  80. Former Box 607 September 23rd, 2009 at 1:16 am

You have to like the fact that Scoscia is going to probably go to Fuentes here. He is a bit shaky. Then the Yanks have the chance to bring in Mo. But if we see Bruney, I’m going to bed.

  81. djsunyc September 23rd, 2009 at 1:16 am

so many chicken littles posting tonight…grow a set and stop acting like pansies…

yanks have won 95 games…we are in the postseason…anything can happen…yet many of you rather whine like a little baby wanting his milk…disgusting…thank goodness the yanks don’t perform like you guys do on this forum…

  87. Pepitone September 23rd, 2009 at 1:17 am

Hughes strikes out two guys, just like I predicted!!!!!!

Unfortunately, he let one of their guys score before he did it.

Hey, the Angels are in their heads, just like the Celtics were in the Lakers heads during the Celtic teams of the 60′s. Just like Bill “Spaceman” Lee was in the Yankees heads in the seventies. It does happen in sports, you know.

  88. JoeMama September 23rd, 2009 at 1:17 am

It would be nice to get a run here just so I don’t have to watch Bruney pitch. It’s like watching an accident about to happen when Yanks play the Angels. You can see it all about to happen but there is nothing you can do.

It’s clearly in their heads. They boot routine balls, they can’t get runners in from 3rd with less than 2 outs, and every one of their pitchers has trouble getting guys out.

WHo said double steal. I love it. Angels would do it to us. Would be hard to get Gardner out stealing third with a lefty on the mound. Cannot keep him on. Only thing is Damon being a lefty, better with a righty up ostructing it a bit.

Damon has to bunt here. No way you can risk him hitting into a DP in this spot in a tie game on the road.

At home it’s one thing, but on the road, you play for the WIN. Your chance of winning this game is much higher by way of sac fly than banking on the lefty-lefty base hit.

  171. GreenBeret7 September 23rd, 2009 at 1:25 am

Buckner has been consistent. That was the same pitch that he wasnt giving to Hughes.
    ——-

Consistent against the Yanks. He’s given that pitch the Angels. Heck he messed up Jeter’s and Alex’s first at-bat.

  493. randy l. September 23rd, 2009 at 1:48 am

i think i just saw pat m strangling a rally monkey.

  494. CB September 23rd, 2009 at 1:48 am

This has been an exceedingly painful game.

But this is a playoff type game.

And the process of winning it is going to make this team better – especially coming back after blowing that big lead.

For any team with a huge lead in September staying focused and sharp and preparing for the playoffs is difficult.

The Yanks owe this win to Phil Hughes probably above everyone else.

Think back to the kid getting racked around on the mound against Baltimore.

Many veteran pitchers would have melted in that 8th inning with those defensive mistakes around him.

Hughes bore down and minimized the damage his fielders created.

That was much more satisfying way to win. Unnecessary, but satisfying.

Gotta read the game thread, but I can already predict lots of rumblings about Girardi’s bullpen management. I agree with leaving Aceves in. We needed a fireman, not a gascan man to come in.

Defense let Phil down, but it all worked out as he collected a win for his efforts. Too bad we lost him for tomorrow.

Good effort by Chad Gaudin, just ran out of gas.

And Gardy! I love beating the Angels at their own game. Because you just know it pisses off Scoscia.

What happened to playing your division rivals in September? Yankees traveling to the coast, Red Sux in KC, MLB can’t even make a schedule right.
