Off you scream into the night

Peter Abraham
September

* That’s a Springsteen lyric in honor of the man’s 60th birthday today. Looking forward to the show at Giants Stadium next Wednesday.

That’s it from sunny California. I’m catching a red-eye back to Newark. The Yankees are off tomorrow and I’m planning to take the day off myself. However, there will be a live video chat at 4 p.m.

I will be joined by Sam Borden from the newsroom of The Journal News to discuss the upcoming Red Sox series and whatever else you would like to talk about. As always, there will be prizes.

Go to www.LoHud.com/protalklive to participate. Bring good questions.

any idea on the pitching probables for the sox series?

  2. Ben

My condolences. No one likes a red eye.

  3. yanksince57-was last year 1959 or was it 1965?

is there a magic number countdown till pete slinks off :)

  4. Yankee Fan From Boston

Pete, you will be missed terribly. That said, I remember Sam Borden doing the Daily News Yankee blog a few years ago and he was great. So have any of the Yankees been ribbing you about going over to cover the “dark side”?

Angel, Thank’s for all the support during this rough stretch ( 0-10 ) ….However I want to thank Erica, her advise ( shower ) was the key…….

Thanks Pat M! I am so glad my crazy shower superstition helped and I could be of assistance. LOL :-)

  8. Jim the VT Yankeefan

I am so sick of hearing about the Yankee “pitching problems” heading into the playoffs. Ya think anyone on ESPN and the rest of the sports media has noticed that Josh Beckett has had exactly one quality start in his last eight starts? Isn’t that a problem?

  9. m

    Thanks, Pete.

I’m going to lift a question off of Dan Patrick’s blog today.

What’s everyone’s favorite Bruce Springsteen song?

    mel-none

  10. Wait till the ALDS

Yanks pitching is sorting itself out now. CC, A.J., Andy, and Chad (Gaudin, obviously) all have done decently in their last starts. Good signs.

  11. smile for the camera

Hopefully Sam is the one who replaces Pete, if he even wants to. Anyhow, great win today, despite a rather interesting 8th inning. Burnett was dominating at times today and he seems to be rounding into form at the right time. Good to see.

  12. Tom in N.J.

    Rosalita.

  13. MG

I just went back and skimmed through the game thread from the 7th inning on. So predictable but, in retrospect, so funny…

97 wins with 9 games left and all of these things have gone wrong (either real or imagined):
-Joba the phenom was replaced by Joba the Hutt
    -Arod missed April
    -Jorge missed most of May
-AJ pitched like crap most of August
-Wang threw batting practice in most of his starts and was then lost to surgery

    -Cano can’t hit with RISP
-Jorge can’t call a decent game for AJ or Joba
-Bruney went from setup guy to ‘change my number cause I suck’ guy
-Teix hit about .150 in April
    -Nady had TJ surgery
-Damon went through about a month where every fly ball hit to left field was an adventure
-CC wasn’t an Ace or even a King or Queen, then he was good, then he sucked, then he was (and is) lights out
-a bullpen guy who wasn’t with the team at the beginning of the season won 10 more games than the #3 starter and only 1 less than the #2 starter
-the #5 starter role is by a committee of throwaways

I could go on but you get the picture, or at least you should. Baseball is a very long season punctuated by hot and cold streaks. Pennant winning teams maximize the hot streaks (as did the Yankees) and minimize the cold spells (they did that also). The result is the best record in baseball for the best team in baseball.

Choosing a single Springsteen song is like picking one Beatles song or one M*A*S*H episode.

Still I would go with Thunder Road with about ten first runners up.

    one of Bruce’s best lyrics-

And your papa says he knows that I don’t have any money
Tell him this is last chance to get his daughter in a fine romance
Because a record company, Rosie, just gave me a big advance

I know exactly one Springsteen song- Dancing in the Dark. He’s not my cup of tea, but then I’m a bit of a young fogey….

I saw Bruce in Ft. Lauderdale 2 weeks ago, Thunder Road was the final encore and absolutely amazing. The song is almost 40 years old and holds up as one of the best songs of about 3 generations.

  26. Wait till the ALDS

I had a blast all season. I love baseball.

  27. MG

Erica, it’s a long season, did one of the players go 0-8 one game? I seem to have forgotten :)

  28. Tom in N.J.

Yeah, all of Bruce’s songs are great. Rosalita was the first song of his that I liked. Hell, I was born and raised in Monmouth County, N.J. This is Bruce country.

Seriously, I remember going ‘trick or treating’ at his house as a little guy-I didn’t know who he was mind you-but, he gave out BIG candy bars and posed for pictures with us kids. My folks loved it. Later on he signed my Fender in Red Bank-which pissed me off becuase I just bought it and his autograph rendered it unplayable. It’s now one of my most cherished things…

  29. Amber Collins

I can’t believe that Springsteen is 60!!!! I had no idea he was that old! I guess he has been around for ever.

  30. Doreen

Thunder Road always comes to mind first, with Jungleland a veryclosesecond. :)

  31. m

Question. Do both top seeds in the ALDS get to choose which series they want? Or only the team with the best record?

Because behind Beckett & Lester, Wakefield’s a big question mark.

  32. Doreen

Springsteen was on the cover of AARP’s magazine this summer in anticipation of his 60th. :) (It was at my eye doctor’s office.)

  33. MG

Doreen, Jungleland in concert is possibly the best thing done by the E Street Band. That was also one of the encores at the show a couple of weeks ago.

  34. m

You guys are so typical. Dan and most of the “danettes” (his staff) went with 2 songs, too. :P

  35. jennifer

A prediction based on something Joe said on his show.

When (notice I say when :-) ) the Yankees clinch the division AJ will throw a banana cream pie in Joe G’s face.

  36. Wait till the ALDS

Wakefield AND Buchholz are not sure things…though Buchholz is close.

  37. jennifer

Even if the soxs win tonight we can still clinch Sunday. Although I’m thinking it will be Monday or Tuesday. Just hopefully they do it at home. :-) I’m sure Hank and Hal won’t mind having to replace the brand new carpet.

  38. mike

The LIVE version of Prove It All Night in Passaic, NJ in 1978 could be the greatest performed song Bruce ever did.

    Happy Birthday Boss

  39. m

    In order of strength:

    Beckett, Lester, Buccholz, Dice, Wake

  42. A NUMBER ONE

Hey all, has anyone received any emails about playoff tickets? I remember 2 years ago I got the emails right away about being able to buy the tickets but I haven’t gotten anything yet and am worried.

  43. pat

Jungleland, Thunder Road and 4th of July, Asbury Park are my top 3.

  44. Doreen

I thought I had tickets to one of these concerts. And then my computer siezed and the timer ran out. I was soooo bummed. It would have been the first time in a long time to see BS&TESB in concert. C’est la vie. :)

    I’m thrilled I’m wrong. :-)

  48. Betsy

MG, question for you. AJ has said that he’s purposely not throwing as hard as he used to (that, along with his better between-start routines, has led to great health these last 2 years – not one ache or pain so far in 2009). However, do you think that maybe trying to tamper down his velocity is hurting him?…I wonder if he would just be better off letting it fly (but not pushing himself, like he did when he was younger) since he’s obviously capable of easy gas.

Even when he was pitching very well this year, most of his starts were not of the dominant types. I can’t recall (maybe the first start in Tampa, when he had a no-hitter going) any truly dominant starts where he completely shut down the other team and struck out a bunch as well. I wonder if that’s a product of AJ trying to be a different pitcher than he’s capable of being…..

  49. GreenBeret7

Sorry, but, I’ll get along just fine without a daily update on every time Springsteen breaks wind.

  50. Betsy

Bucholz is close to being a sure thing? Based on beating the O’s and the Jays?

  51. Doreen

    Erica -

I didn’t even know there WAS an AARP magazine until I saw it in my doctor’s office. And the ONLY reason I picked it up was because of Bruce. i bet they sold a lot of magazines that month. Maybe even got some of the 50-and over crowd to actually open the unsolicited membership mailings they start to automatically send you right around your 50th birthday. HAH!

  52. Wait till the ALDS

Betsy-7 2/3 shut-out innings vs. the Red Sox.

  53. Wait till the ALDS

No, based on being consistently good against other team’s Ace pitchers a lot of the time…including ours.

Buccholz pitched well aginst us, vs. CC, knowing he had to be good. He did well facing Verlander (2 runs, 1 earned). He faced Halladay several times and beat him I know at least once. I have to think of him as close to a sure thing until he gives me a reason to think otherwise.

Betsy, he’s said the change was made last year before he won 18 games. And, like the above post said, 7+ innings against the Sox with 1 hit, 7 innings of 4 hit shutout ball against the Mets, 7 innings of 1 hit, shutout ball against the Mets, 7 innings of 2 hit shutout ball against the Rays, 6 innings of 3 hit shutout ball against the Rangers, 8 innings of 3 hit ball against the Rays, these are all great starts. His ERA in wins is below 2, he’s just been inconsistent because his location has stunk at times.

AJ is a streaky pitcher, if he keeps pitching the way he has for the last couple of weeks the Yankees are very tough in the playoffs.

  66. Erica - always OPPC

    Doreen-

I did realize recently a big sign that I am in fact getting older. I noticed I was a lot happier with the arrival of my Rachael Ray magazine than my Cosmo and Glamours. LOL

  67. Wait till the ALDS

I think that the key to the Yankees is A.J. Burnett. You have to look at CC and Andy as sure things until they give you reason to think otherwise. A.J. is the variable. If he’s good, the Yanks are good. If he’s bad, the Yanks are…not bad, but probably not going deep. Which it’s why it’s nice to have him on a little bit of a roll here before the playoffs.

  68. Betsy

I guess when I think dominant, I mean complete shut down performances……with few men getting on. AJ has walked so many this year – even in that start against the Sox, he walked 6. I will never bash him because I think he’s a really good guy and I like him too much for that (plus, he’s trying – I can never bash a player who is putting in the effort) but I admit that I thought he’d be better. Still, as long as he performs in the playoffs, that’s all that counts…

  69. Pat M.

Well Pete, Im guessing it’s Continetal out of John Wayne….I gave up on that flight, I hate Newark Liberty ……Bring shorts next trip, summer heat is always arrives in September / October into Novemeber…..Going to miss you Pete, especially that dry humor…..

  70. pat

    Bruce makes me nostalgic.

First concert I ever went to with just friends on the train into NYC was 30 years ago this week (yes, I’m old). No Nukes concert at MSG. Performing- Bruce, Jackson Browne, Crosby Stills Nash, Bonnie Raitt, Doobie Brothers, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Tom Petty and others.

You always remember your first fondly.

  71. Betsy

GB, also – Mike and the Mad Dog would talk about him all the time and that pissed me off. I liked when they talked movies with Jeffrey Lyons – Springsteen? I didn’t need to hear for the billionth time how Mad Dog got front row tickets, got to go backstage, etc…….

  72. Tom in N.J.

Clay has 6 wins-3 against the Bluejays; 2 against the O’s and one vs the Rays.

Against the Yankees he allowed 11 baserunners in 6 innings. He only gave up 2 runs, however.

  73. DT - OPPC member (blood type - Positive)

And she probably thought those were just bones buried in the backyard.

6 innings, 2 runs vs. the Yankees.

    That’s pretty good.

Erica, I used to like Rachael (why does she spell her name that way, lol) Ray at the beginning; now I can’t stand her. Her voice makes my skin crawl – she’s so artificially cheery.

  76. Wait till the ALDS

Wins are not as important as good outings. His last 7 starts or so have been very, very good.

  78. MG

Betsy, I’m reporting you to Al Leiter for your non-enjoyment of Bruce. Your fine will be to have to listen to the Angels TV feed during the playoffs. If Physioc and ‘Hud’ don’t drive you crazy we’ll throw in some Dewayne Staats and Kevin Kennedy for good measure…

Just never saw all that much with his music. John Fogerty, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, yes. Also love great piano music….like Ferrante and Teicher, loved going to the Johnny Mercer and Percy Faith concerts. Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings shows. The best were Willie Nelson’s orginal 4th of July picnics back in the early 70s.

  80. m

No “one” guy’s going to be the key to the playoffs. People (well, Pat M.) said that about Joba two weeks ago. If AJ starts to spiral, you think the Yankees won’t yank him or do what it takes to stop the bleeding?

    If you have CC/AJ/Andy

Jeter/Damon/Tex/Alex/Posada/Matsui/Cano (see how ridiculous that looks!)

    Hughes/Rivera

If you have this CORE of guys going for you, you have a good chance to win in the postseason. Funky things will happen. Balls will be called strikes. Strikes will be called balls. Balls will get past the catcher, and they’ll skip into the outfield on the force attempt at 2nd.

But the Yankees hopes will not rest on one guy. If AJ stinks? Bring in Aceves. If Joba stinks? Bring in Gaudin. Run out of reliable relievers? Have one of the starters throw an inning.

They’re going to run a tight game in the postseason, no more experimenting and letting guys earn Girardi’s trust.

The cast has changed a bit, but this is the team that got them the best record in baseball and an early ticket to the postseason. No worries.

It’s best that I just ignore this one. So many jokes….so little time.

  83. Wait till the ALDS

Eh…sorry, disagree m. I think A.J. is the key because he is the most important and most unpredictable variable. He is one of our most important players, and it is perhaps slightly more than 50/50 on whether he does well or bombs.

  84. Christina- Pictures of the Girardi and A-Rod ejection + Leiter's Sock

Love Rosalita…. Then again, Leiter sang that on stage with Bruce at a concert a while back. From what I recall, he didnt know half of the words. Not sure if thats true. Hope not.

  85. Wait till the ALDS

If A.J. starts to spiral and they put in, say, Joba, and Joba does bad, it’s still A.J. who’s the key because he should have done good in the first place.

You’re thinking of another pair. Brothers Walter and George Liberace.

  87. Bronx Jeers

    I loathe that Rachel Ray.

She might as well go and marry Josh Beckett that’s how much I despise her.

  88. m

Why the heck would they put in Joba in long relief? That’s what Joba’s been doing for most of the season. Long relief outings, and it’s not pretty.

  89. Wait till the ALDS

I just used that as a random example. Replace Joba’s name with Ace. Whatever.

  90. m

    I did say Ace.

  91. m

No offense, but I’m not into worrying about worse-case scenarios.

  92. Tom in N.J.

  94. m

    Can’t stand her.

She’s an ugly toad who croaks.

And I’m pretty sure I can cook better than she can.

I was responding to your comment at 10:39, which I assumed was a response to my comment where I said:

“If A.J. starts to spiral and they put in, say, Joba, and Joba does bad…”

So I said that the use of Joba was just a random example and that if you want to use Ace’s name there, fine.

  96. Pat M.

m….The point I was attempting to make about the less than stellar Joba Chamberlain, was that I feel that at some point during the sprint to 11 wins, the spotlight is going to find Joba…..Every Postseason there is a time when a pitcher has that all important series changing start…I think it will be him and he’ll rise to the occasion…..That being said, since I made those bold statements, Joba has continued to regress & Gaudin has continued to improve…..I also think Cano will be the talk of the Yank’s run…..If everyone plays to their season output, it will be the special season that was promised back in March…….

  97. Wait till the ALDS

    But you said:

“If AJ stinks? Bring in Aceves. If Joba stinks? Bring in Gaudin. Run out of reliable relievers? Have one of the starters throw an inning.”

MG, DeWayne Staats (I’m sure I spelled his name wrong, but for the first time in my life, I don’t feel like correcting it, lol) used to broadcast Yankee games ……I think on ch 11 (mid 90’s, I think)….Frankly, I have a great mistrust of announcers, possibly because they always seem to worship at the altar of the Red Sox, lol. I put all announcers in the same boat…….BORING. I miss Scooter, White and Messer.

GB, I only know a few of Willie Nelson’s songs. One of my favs of all time is You were Always on My Mind. I never heard Waylon Jennings; when I think of him, I think of how he was supposed to go on the plane with Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper, but Ritche Valens volunteered to go in his place….

  99. Wait till the ALDS

Cano reminds me of Dave Winfield.

  100. Betsy

Wait, I agree with you about AJ. I thought he was the key to the whole season as a matter of fact. I thought if he was good, the Yankees would be very solid, but if he was very good, they’d be great. Was I right? Wrong? I don’t know – AJ’s had a funny season. As it turns out, the team has been very good regardless.

  101. m

    Pat M,

I didn’t mean to call you out. I think SJ and I were both on the record that there is no room for ineffective pitchers. And if Joba hadn’t figured it out, the Yankees were not going to put the oars in his hands, so to speak.

It’s a team game, and I think they can overcome a bad inning or two. If not, then they didn’t deserve to win it all, did they?

  102. tennore

  104. m

    Wait,

I don’t want to run around this. You said if AJ stinks, and they bring, in say, Joba and he stinks then….

I said, what? Use Joba in long relief? So you said whatever use Ace’s name.

And I said that I did. In my original statement.

It’s not a big deal. I just don’t think one guy’s going to win or lose the whole enchilada for us.

  105. Wait till the ALDS

All right. That was more confusing than it needed to be.

  106. Pat M.

Betsy, When you consider that the Yankee rotation blueprint back in February when Pitchers & catchers reported, that they would win over 100 games without Wang and with a very disappointing yet somewhat over zealous expectaions from Joba……Quite remarkable when you consider all the trials and tribulations that Giradi and his staff had to deal with….

  107. m

Basically, some of you are bracing yourself for the possiblity that AJ’s going to have a bad outing in the playoff.

But if you open up your hearts and your minds, you may be pleasantly surprised.

  111. Betsy

Pat M, that’s so true. How I wish Wang had been healthy ……but, there’s no point in “what ifs”. The team ended up being an exceptional team…..and I hope they can end up on top when all is said and done.

As to age, my philosophy has always been that aging beats the alternative. I have never understood why people get so upset about getting older, to the point they want to have cosmetic surgery to make themselves look more youthful. I think attitude is the key. I will be 38 tomorrow and, in general, I act like a big kid. I think if you have a good sense of humor, it helps – because laughter is good for the soul.

    ————————————————————

Yeah, the Jennings/Holly situation was one that Jennings never got over. Holly had made a kidding remark that he hoped that the bus would break down and Jennings said that he hopes the plane crashes. Holly would have taken the bus if his wife had traveled like she usually did, but she was expecting a baby, so she didn’t travel. Jennings said he lived with that every day. It was a terrible loss in the music world.

Jennings later married Jessie Coulter, who had been married to another rock-a-billy legend, Duane Eddy.

Back to WillieNelson, he did a couple of great duets with Dyan Cannon “Loving You Was Easier (Than anything I’ve Ever done Before)”, EmmyLou Harris “Angel Eyes” and Amy Irving and “You sow Me Yours and I’ll show You Mine”. “Both ends Of The Candle” was another, but, he has so many different styles that it’s hard to chose.

Assuming you mean how, not who… I was 14 (too young to drive, had to hitchhike from Tupelo to Memphis) and had been going to rock shows for about a year. My mother encouraged it, just as she encouraged my being a Yankees fan. Up until that first 1976 Springsteen show, I had seen some good ones… Elvis Presley, Kool and the Gang, both the Who and the Guess Who, Paul McCartney, the Grateful Dead… but on that April night in Memphis, Bruce Springsteen changed the way I hear and appreciate music by raising the bar about commitment and passion. The only time I’ve seen that level met since is Clash and Joe Strummer shows.
