The Yankees are back in the playoffs after beating the Angels last night.

Dave Robertson is getting closer to a return. This notebook also has updates on Phil Coke and a special visit from one of the Supremes.

Happy Birthday to Joba Chamberlain & Bruce Springsteen.

I missed the top of thee 8th inning, but saw highlights later. How are people blaming Phil for giving up that run? Thanks to his D, he was behind the 8 ball – runner on 3rd and no out? The odds of getting out of that unscathed are pretty low. He did well to K Vlad and Hunter………

Aceves has been very up and down in the 2nd half…….and he was down tonight. He’s no sure thing when he comes into a game anymore, and I felt he was in the first half.

Gutsy win by the Yankees…….I’m not expecting them to do much against Kazmir, but it’s all about AJ anyway. If he pitches well, that’s what matters….even if they losed.

I like that the Yankees didn’t celebrate last night (not that we would have seen it -My 9 had no post-game)

  3. Cash is King September 23rd, 2009 at 8:20 am

Which people are blaming Hughes for giving up that run?

  4. Art September 23rd, 2009 at 8:21 am

7 wins still gets us to 103 wins which Pete extrapolation a while back. We may not quite get to 103 but it isn’t a stretch either. Just need to win tonight and go 2 of 3 in the next 3 series. Red Sox and Angels will be lucky to get to 99 wins. So actually we probably only need 4 more wins to wrap it up. Amazing how the gloomers and doomers could have been so wrong (not really!).

  5. upstate kate September 23rd, 2009 at 8:24 am

Betsy- I think Jedi Phil just wanted to get another win :)

  6. upstate kate September 23rd, 2009 at 8:24 am

not blaming Phil at all. he did a great job

  7. Betsy September 23rd, 2009 at 8:25 am

Wow, I didn’t realize Ace hadn’t pitched since the 14th – that’s ridiculous. Joe should have gotten him into a game, even in less than ideal circumstances for him. No wonder he was bad tonight.

  8. Art September 23rd, 2009 at 8:27 am

    Betsy –

Not sure why you are so pessimistic about beating Kazmir. I say the boys are back and Kazmir isn’t that good anyway.

  9. Laura - Matsui in pinstripes in 2010! September 23rd, 2009 at 8:30 am

Kazmir can be beat. Have some faith.

  10. Giuseppe Franco September 23rd, 2009 at 8:31 am

Aceves has been caddying for Joba the last few weeks.

The reason he hadn’t pitched in so long is because of Joba’s bad outing on Sunday.

Girardi probably felt it made more sense burning Mitre that far behind instead of Aceves, the guy he sticks out there to pitch multiple innings and protect a lead.

    It makes perfect sense.

Aceves is fine and still reliable.

Last nights’ game must have set a record on this blog for bridge jumping in a game where the Yankees NEVER TRAILED!

Those of you who participated have no right to enjoy a World Series win this or any other year because you not only have no baseball knowledge but you completely lack any confidence in a team that has earned it all year.

Here are some (not even close to all) of these idiotic comments. The next time there is a close game maybe you should take some Prozac and get back in your cribs.

Hunter keeps getting check swings that are not. What is with these umpires looking to change the outcome of games?

They deserve to lose this game. Period.
    They just can’t win here
    Jeremy September 23rd, 2009 at 12:59 am
See. This team sucks in Anaheim. Why don’t they just quit the next game.

    100 pitches of fun… September 23rd, 2009 at 1:02 am
Did anyone really think the Yanks would win this game after they failed inning after inning to tack on another run? The Angels will get this run in they always do.
    mark September 23rd, 2009 at 1:05 am
    epic embarrassing failure
    JZ September 23rd, 2009 at 1:05 am
They will score again in the bot of 8th, and that’s it.
    damn it.
    Jeremy September 23rd, 2009 at 1:05 am
I don’t get how this team allows this overrated Angels team to beat them, I am sick and tired of the excuses from the Yankees. Beat the Angels in Anaheim !
    Yankee44 September 23rd, 2009 at 1:06 am
It’s getting to the point where they should just forfeit the road trips to Anaheim and rest the players who need it. It’d be a whole heck of a lot more productive
    anotherplayofflossahead September 23rd, 2009 at 1:09 am
what a gutless team. yanks are going to be the laughingstock of the postseason.
    Jeremy September 23rd, 2009 at 1:09 am
I am sick of this. They should not even show up tom. Just quit and go back home. This team can’t beat the Angels in Anaheim. And Girardi once again failed to use his good arms in the pen so they wouldn’t be rusty creating this situation.
Pel (a/k/a Bart Simpson) September 23rd, 2009 at 1:09 am
    >Its truly mind boggling how we cannot beat this team.
    Commit errors. Pitch horribly.
    Not hard to figure out.
    Aura September 23rd, 2009 at 1:09 am
How many games has this Yankee team lost due to the absense of Robertson?
    Carl September 23rd, 2009 at 1:09 am
    The Yanks are a joke.
Mehdi also in SF September 23rd, 2009 at 1:10 am
No it won’t be a long one because we’re giving up the go ahead run before this inning is over and will go out meekly in the 9th. This teams performance against the Angels is one of the most frustrating things on earth with the Israeli/ Palestinian conflict following close behind.
    Jeremy September 23rd, 2009 at 1:13 am

Um seriously who is pitching the 9th inning? The Yanks have no one else good left in the bullpen.
Pel (a/k/a Bart Simpson) September 23rd, 2009 at 1:27 am
    WORST. BUNTER. EVER.
    Carl September 23rd, 2009 at 1:27 am
Joe G is stupid. Just stupid.

  12. Rex September 23rd, 2009 at 8:34 am

Kazmir has pitched quite well since joining the Halos, posting a 1.42 ERA over his 4 starts. Short sample, but he’s cut his walk rate in half since the trade. When he throws strikes, he’s one nasty mofo.

  13. Giuseppe Franco September 23rd, 2009 at 8:36 am

That’s what Yankee fans do on this board. The vast majority of these people are insane.

    Unfortunately, they never learn.

  14. Giuseppe Franco September 23rd, 2009 at 8:38 am

As long as Burnett keeps his team in the game, the Yanks can win.

The Angels’ bullpen is rotten and has been most of the season.

Kazmir will throw a lot of pitches if they let him.

  15. upstate kate September 23rd, 2009 at 8:40 am

MG…part of the reason I don’t check this blog at night, too many people live and die w/ each pitch.
lets hope we get the good AJ today.

  16. Betsy September 23rd, 2009 at 8:40 am

Art, frankly, I’m really just interested in AJ’s performance…..what the Yankees do against Kazmir is almost irrelevant. A good AJ would be huge for us in the playoffs- a mediocre to bad AJ will make things very difficult.

  17. Betsy September 23rd, 2009 at 8:42 am

GF, this is the problem I had when Phil was caddying for Wang – he could never pitch because he had to be able to go in case Wang stunk it up. Ace should not be going (nor should any pitcher) 8 days without pitching……

  18. Coach6423 September 23rd, 2009 at 8:44 am

    Art,

Welcome to LoHud, Betsy is pessimistic about everything.

  19. rl1856 September 23rd, 2009 at 8:47 am

With last nights win, isn’t it 2 of the last 3 against the Angels ? The silly 1 game makeup, loss in the 1st game of this series, then last night’s victory….looks like 2 of 3 and maybe a change of recent history against the Angels ?

Series between Sox and Angels will be interesting; whichever pen gives up the least runs will determine the victor….5 bloody games ahead for both teams.

  20. Giuseppe Franco September 23rd, 2009 at 8:51 am

    Betsy,

The Yanks completely screwed up Wang’s rehab. They shouldn’t have activated him that soon when they knew he wasn’t quite there yet.

But they panicked when Joba took that liner off the knee against the O’s and made a really bad decision.

  21. Abdababdaserser September 23rd, 2009 at 8:55 am

Kazmir is due to have a bad outing, why not today? /smirk

Kazmir has not had a great year, but he can beat the Yankees and the Red Sox. I am hoping to see AJ in full battle mode today and through the rest of the games for this season.

AJ is a bit of an enigma. Has great stuff, yet can melt down almost inexplicably at any given time, then go back to being lights out.

GF, lets face it, the Yankees have found more ways to lose in LA than we care to recall. When you have a decent lead only to cough it up in the later part of the game its tough to remain positive in LA. Not saying its right, but it is understandable.

The Yankees had to get that “monkey off their backs” (Jeter said the same thing last night).

  22. Doreen September 23rd, 2009 at 8:56 am

    MG -

I appreciate your frustration – even totally empathize with it – but once was really enough! I was following the game via game thread last night; at times it was unbearable.

  23. NYYROC September 23rd, 2009 at 8:57 am

Exciting to watch this team, even at 2AM :) !!! You never know who the hero will be. This team doesn’t depend on just 1 or 2 guys. Every day someone else comes through!!

  24. Abdababdaserser September 23rd, 2009 at 9:01 am

GF, yes the Yankees didn’t do Wang a great service in his rehab, but hind sight always helps with that. Wang wasn’t ready, but there were times when he looked like he was very close. His bullpen sessions were said to be going well, but in games it would fall apart.

In the case of Aceves I think Girardi was going too much by the set role for him, and with the recent slump it meant that he didn’t pitch for 8 days. That is a bit too long between outings and it showed.

  25. Giuseppe Franco September 23rd, 2009 at 9:02 am

Not exactly. This Yankee ball club can beat anyone. I don’t care who it is or where the game is played.

Besides, the bridge jumpers spew nonsense night after night regardless who the Yanks are playing.

Many of them were claiming over the weekend that the Red Sox were going to win the AL East since “they just never lose anymore.”

Uh-huh. The AL East race has been over for weeks.

  26. Abdababdaserser September 23rd, 2009 at 9:03 am

NYYROC, I think that is precisely why this team is so good this year.

  27. Abdababdaserser September 23rd, 2009 at 9:07 am

GF, I agree that the Yankees can beat anyone, but even great teams can have it get in their heads that they can’t win “here”. Jeter talked about it last night a bit.

LA has been a thorn in the side of the Yankees when they play there. That win last night just helps them mentally. While I believe they are very confident, they also want to remove that nagging little doubt that creeps in when they see leads disappear in the same place over and over.

  28. Pov September 23rd, 2009 at 9:26 am

Lots to gain from a win today, so I think it’s a big game:

Beating Kazmir who has owned the Yanks on his new team in their ballpark

Taking 2-3 in LA and 3 out of the last four from LA

A second consecutive good outing from AJ

Winning a series and setting maybe some good momentum for the upcoming Boston series.

Reducing the magic number again so pitching lineups for the playoffs can be set earlier

  29. GGBG (Magic Number: The Mick) September 23rd, 2009 at 9:51 am

The biggest thing in this game – bar none – is how AJ pitches. If he gets on one of those rolls where he is unhittable we are in great shape.

It looked like he was getting there last time out…

  30. GGBG (Magic Number: Joe Torre September 23rd, 2009 at 9:52 am

Whoops! Forgot to update the Magic Number!
