On 24 September, 2001, outfielder Tuffy Rhodes hit his 55th home run of the season, tying Sadaharu Oh’s NPB record.

Rhodes was the Chicago Cubs opening day center fielder in 1994 and the Cubs leadoff batter against the Mets, and hit three homers that day. He finished the season with 7.

Oh, yeah. The pitcher that gave up the record tying 55th homer was Daisuke Matsuzaka.

Hopefully Sam, but only if he becomes the beat writer. If he stays as a columnist but takes over the blog, the blog won’t be as good.

Betsy, I fear by the time this posts it will no longer be your birthday! But they will stick it in at the 4:36 time slot. But since it won’t show up for quite a while, you will never see that at 4:36 I wished you a happy birthday!

    GRRR!!!!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY BETSY!!!

  21. Nick in SF September 24th, 2009 at 4:38 pm

Tom, if you hav en’t seen it already, I give my highest recommendation to a Germen film from a couple years ago called “The Blogs of Others”. It’s about blogging in East Germany in the 1980′s. Excellent film.

  22. Jobamania September 24th, 2009 at 4:40 pm

The Pirates claimed pitcher Anthony Claggett off waivers from the Yankees, according to a press release. The Yanks had designated him for assignment ten days ago. Claggett, a 25-year-old righty, was acquired by the Yanks from Detroit in the Gary Sheffield deal in November of ’06. Upon reaching Triple A this year, Claggett’s strikeout rate took a large drop to 4.7 per nine innings.

Thanks, Nick. For some reason or another, I’m fascinated by ‘life behind the Iron Curtain’ stories, films and literature. Well, most, if not all, Russian literature. Thanks again.

Oh and I have seen the Lives of Others…

  28. Nick in SF September 24th, 2009 at 4:48 pm

i asked the question below which pete said was a great question (and wrote my name down) but not sure how the voting goes or how the winner(s) get notified…

    [Comment From sab]
pete/sam 7th game of the WS – bases loaded 2 outs yankees down by 1 run – who do you want up at bat if you are girardi?

    we’ll see..

  34. Nick in SF September 24th, 2009 at 5:01 pm

Ah, good. There was another film, the title escapes me, about a woman from pre-’89 East Germany who goes into a coma and comes out years later and her family tries to keep up the facade of the lifestyle for her. Or something like that, I might be mixed up on the details. Not as good as “The Lives of Others”, but still of some interest.

  35. DT - OPPC member September 24th, 2009 at 5:02 pm

“Can someone catch me up? Did I hear that right, is Pete leaving?”

traded to Boston for a writer to be named later.

  36. Francis September 24th, 2009 at 5:02 pm

Never mind, my co-worker explained it to me. Thanks anyway.

  57. betsy September 24th, 2009 at 5:36 pm

Tom, Trisha (via Erica), DT, Nick (or is that Suzyn Waldman?), Bronx Born, Randy (a song, too!)…..thank you! I hope I haven’t missed anyone! I’m going out for a nice steak dinner tonight – nothing like a good steak and potatoes.

I will reveal my birthday wish for the first time on this blog……….I just want to be able to chill and enjoy the Yankees instead of worrying about them. That’s it – that’s not too much to ask, is it?

  58. betsy September 24th, 2009 at 5:37 pm

Randy and GB, we’re not getting older, we’re getting better. For me, though, this blog is like the Picture of Dorian Gray. Whenever I post, I get a little bit younger……

  71. Betsy September 24th, 2009 at 5:55 pm

Maine, Bronx, Sean, GB, Dennis, RMEL – thank you! Everyone is so sweet……I appreciate the birthday wishes.

Bronx, the steak is absolutely prime and dry-aged. However, the potatoes are crusty as we usually get well-done hash browns. Yum.

Carl, thanks for the info. It could have been worse with Jerry, but then Tex’ tendonitis lasted for a month, so who knows?

  72. Nick von Clausewitz in SF September 24th, 2009 at 5:55 pm

The problem with that pick, dennis, is that if I play it, I’m more likely to watch the game. And if I watch the game I’m more likely to be exposed to Spurrier being referred to as ‘the ol’ ball coach’ or some variation thereof.

    Is it worth it?

    I’m not sure.

Hi, fine article, you posted all the same if you don’t mind I’d impart few notes around approaches young ladies or men. Especially it can be hard when it occurs to man woman relationships. The essential matter is your mental attitude, which should be attached and open. If you have an position like that, any individual shouldn’t experience any troubles that you have speechmaking as viewing. When you offset a conversation, you normally need to demand safe wonders that are confident not to cause her any irritation. Once the conversation goes some momentum, you can ask more physical questions. A good illusion is to memorize some interrogations she made a point of so whenever the conversation slows down, you can mention one of these questions.

  84. attract.men November 8th, 2009 at 4:03 am

Hi nice post. I consider these angles might be utilizable too. Now the good pick up describes are the ones that flatter the woman. Right Away several of the lines might just be in all pleasant fun to help discover the ice. That is main and it can at long last lead to landing up in bed with her at the end of the night. Heck what man doesn’t want that, but knowing what to articulate and how to pull it off can take a bit of practice. A rattling pick up note will have you in the door but from there you have to be assured sufficient to maintain the conversation running.
