Excuse all the tests. They are not working because the posts still aren’t showing up, though they will eventually and will show up as having posted at 11:05 a.m., though they may not actually post until much later. Fun fun fun.
Pete, you realize that after you move north, I’m going to end up knowing more about the Red Sox than I ever thought I would.
I love the New York yankees, but one of the reasons I read this blog is your journalism skills. I also appreciate that you give kudos to other writers like Tyler Kepner.
I can’t believe Pete never posted anything about registering for the post season tickets! This is my Yankees information source, and he really let me down.
I think he’s just mailing it in for his last weeks. Just leave already Pete. Why even bother if your heart’s not in it anymore (assuming it ever was)?

do everyone a favor, and jump off a bridge.
Overly critical people on the internet suck.
That was pretty critical Vinny B, some might say ‘overly’ so.
Will there be a formal passing of the baton announcement?
“That was pretty critical Vinny B, some might say ‘overly’ so”
no, taking a cheap shot at Pete was both critical and ungrateful. A person who has “went the distance”, for yankee fans, the past 2+ years
Somebody needed to whine about something today.
They spent all of yesterday whining about Girardi “mailing it in”.
Seeing how that turned out, they move onto another complaint.
Not surprising.
“Seeing how that turned out, they move onto another complaint.”
Like this?
4PM Pete? Could you have picked a more monumentally inconvenient time for a chat? Couldn’t work something for rush hour? Or dinner time? And another thing. You and Sam Borden? What the hell kind of lineup is that?

HAHA seconded Vinny!
Pete did post the post-season ticket information.

even though the yankees aren’t in great shape on a fourth starter, i’m hoping they go for the series B.
i really don’t like the idea of facing verlander twice in the first 4 games .
any thoughts on it yet?
Well, if all goes to plan they shouldn’t have to face Verlander twice-unless he pitches both games 1 and 3.
I’d rather go for the 3 starter rotation.
I understand people’s concerns about Verlander.
Here is the way I see it…..
To be the best, you have to beat the best. I don’t believe in ducking anybody, rooting for one team or the other because a team is “easier” etc.
I’d rather play to my strength.
Right now, for better or worse, in a 5 game series, the Yankees strength is the 3 starter setup.
If I could actually trust Joba to be a functional starting pitcher in the post-season, I might change my mind.
However, seeing how bad he is right now, (if there was a minor league season still going, he would be in AAA), I think its in the Yankees best interests to go with the 3 starter setup.
If Justin Verlander beats the Yankees twice in Yankee Stadium to advance the Tigers, you tip your cap.
I think this team is too good at home for any one pitcher to beat them twice at home in a single series.
Rex
Just my opinion but…..
Pujols gave voters a viable alternative for player of the decade. Before the PEDs confession Alex may not have won but I’m guessing more than 2 in 10 people would have voted for him. He did have 3 MVPs to Pujols 2, higher numbers in the “sexy” stats (HRs, RBI, SB) and played a more defensively significant position.
If people used PEDs deductions for individual positions, could Crede, Beltre, Chavez or a 3Bman I’m not thinking of right now be seen as a realistic viable alternative to Alex at 3B? I would say no.
Think about it……
The Yankees beat the Angels yesterday with their C lineup.
The pitcher who made the biggest pitches in the game (Ian Kennedy) hadn’t even pitched this year in the majors!
When you can do that, you have a really, really good team.
Its just a matter of putting it together in the post-season and try to find a way to win 11 games.
Everyone so worried about Verlander. You do realize that he will be matched up against CC, our best right? So Yanks have as good a shot as winning those games as the Tigers. Also, AJ seems to have righted himself and Andy bounced back pretty good so he seems good to go.
I really can’t stand worrying over which team they will face, which pitcher, and so on. I am with SJ44 on that 100%.
Nothing you can do will prevent a team getting hot at the right time, or hitting slumps for that matter. All you can do is continue the things that you did through the season and believe that you can continue that.
Its not like the pitchers in post season magically become better than they were in the regular season. Some may seem to step it up, but its more a matter of handling the pressures they feel. Just like some pitchers are better at closing because of how they perform under that kind of pressure.
Just enjoy the ride.
just win baby!
They spent all of yesterday whining about Girardi “mailing it in”.
—————————————————–
Exactly — That’s all Trolls do; mail in the same cynical crap post after post. They have to mail it in cause they would be in danger of getting pummeled if they showed their jerk faces with their jerk criticism in public.
I’m just happy the Yanks are off today, so I only have to pay attention to one game: the #4 Ole Miss Rebels whipping Steve Spurrier and South Carolina.
Verlander in August & September: 6-4
The four loses:
Minny 6.o innings 5 earned runs
Seattle 8.0 innings 3 earned runs
KC 6.0 innings 1 earned run
Minny 7.1 innings 5 earned runs
SJ:
Further to your point, the fact that Ian Kennedy ended up making the most important pitches in the game highlights an even more salient fact: you cannot predict these games. Period.
Everyone is scared of facing Verlander. Everyone wants to play the Twins. Everyone thinks we can beat the Sox but not the Angels. None of this matters. When are people going to finally realize that baseball is not played on a piece of paper? Examples:
This past Monday night: ‘Oh look at that lineup – Girardi has put in his “A” lineup for Andy, he’s really out to win this must game.’ Result: Yankees lose 5-2.
Yesterday: What is with this lineup?? Girardi’s mailing it in! Result: Yankees win 3-2.
Is it possible Verlander can go out and pitch two shutouts and knock the Yanks out? Of course. It’s also possible he pitches a hell of a game and loses 2-1 to CC.
It’s also possible that the Twins sneak in, everyone on this blog holds a snake dance in celebration, and lo and behold, it’s the Twins that get the lucky bounces and win a couple of walk-offs.

In August & September
10-0
It has been a great year in Yankeeland:
The team will win in excess of 100 games
The team has gotten some payback and excorsized demons at Fenway and Anaheim.
Around the horn – coming back from injury a very nice year for Posada, Tex earning all of his money and then some (he is a spectacular player on defense day in day out), Cano except for risp had a bounce back year and will be in the top 5 in hits in the AL, Jeter has been resurgent and is at least in the discussion for MVP, Arod anyone have .290, 30, 100 when we learned he was going to need hip surgery, Swisher is probably the transaction of the decade, Melky/Gardner have been a very serviceable tandem, Damon has flashed the power stroke particularly at the stadium, Matsui had another professional hitter year.
Pitching – CC is a CY Young candidate, Burnett has had some ups and downs but hopefully builds off his last few starts to a dominant post season, Pettite earned all of his incentives and gave them innings, Joba pitched a full season (I will be the first to predict a huge year for him next year), Mo is the greatest ever and continues to perform at that level, Hughes has reclaimed his status as one of the better pitching prospects in the league, D-Rob & Coke give the team a cost effective and very productive middle of the bullpen, Melancon can hit opposing players (next year will be a big step forward for him as well).
AAA went to the league championship and contributed useful pieces to the roster in Pena and Cervelli. Jackson hit .300 and continues to develop. Corona and or Russo might be in NY as utility infielders next year. Nova took it to the next level and is getting closer to NY.
AA ended up the year out of the playoffs but with some big time prospects. Montero is probably top 5 in the entire league. Nunez had a big step forward. Macallister was really solid.
A won their league. Romine had an excellent year and will move to Trenton next year. Phelps, Heredia, are pitchers to watch.
Lower levels – Manny Banuelos stepped up big time and will be one of the top prospects in the organization. Brackman pitched the whole year. Staten Island has some nice players including top picks from this years draft like Warren.
The draft was pretty good and the team now has two high end high schoolers in Heathcott and Murphy.
They signed Gary Sanchez who now that Mateo is out of his contract may be the top catch on the IFA market. Guys like de Leon and Duran and Sosa (down year numbers wise) and Pena and Ramirez showed outstanding potential.
Aroldis Chapman is soon to be a free agent.
They opened a magnificent new ballpark.
My biggest concerns were Joba’s lack of production, injury to Wang and general injuries to minor league pitchers (Kontos, Betances, Heredia)
Didn’t the Yankees beat Verlander and Jackson back to back this year? When Jackson was pitching well?CC isn’t going to be as tired as he’s been in previous years, I feel sorry for any team that has to hit against him.
Good morning, everyone.
Boy, Sachin really likes to stir it up. Congratulations on being the winner, of course the charity will end up being the winner. I truly worry about you. If the Red Sox organization fails to thwart you, you will get it from the crowd. How about a nice blazer over a navy tee with the NY emblazoned on the front breast. That way, the world will get a peek at it in your delivery. Subtle, stealth. Just like Cashman.
Seriously, good luck and I hope you have fun with it.
Torre, Jeter, Alex, Rivera? Good calls. I object to Joe Mauer over Posada for obvious reasons. Mauer’s had a killer 3-4 years. Posada’s been a good hitting catcher for over a decade.
Pujols? Ugh. I know he’s great and all, but I can’t stand the way everyone fawns over him. I guess other people feel that way about Jeter.
Jeter should be player of the decade.
I would say yesterday’s lineup was no worse than B. And actually I think it was clever of Joe to get some new faces in to face Kazmir. Guys with something to prove since they don’t play much. It’s not like the A team has a great record against Kazmir — though I don’t think it is hopeless either.
Oh yeah – and all of those come from behind and walk-off wins.
Above all this team has a never to late attitude that will hopefully serve it well in Oct. and November.
Art,
If that was a B lineup, what does your A look like?
I try not to complain in advance, but that lineup was sad looking.
Of course, they rewarded my faith with a win (the b-listers usually do)!
When are we going to hear something about J-Hair?
I’m with SJ. You pick the series that plays to your strengths as opposed to trying to count on your opponents weaknesses to carry you.
Who knows if Blackburn turns in Kenny Rogers? Or Verlander into Javy Vasquez?
Any one game or start is impossible to predict.
Kennedy did not make the most important pitches of the game.
If AJ Burnett hadn’t pitched to his level of craft, there would have been no lead to hand over the to bullpen to protect. It’s great that we’ve seen now two straight strong outings from AJ. Better still, he said he feels like he’s clicking again mechanically.
But Kennedy, for a kid who was coming back from an aneurysm and a forgettable 2008, gave us some inspired work in high leverage. That was just so great to see. Hughes and Kennedy, both villified by many fans and writers alike a year ago, contributed to moving us closer to clinching the division and the HFA.
We saw Hughes be the tipping point in the previous game, pointing up a significant difference between the bullpens of the Yanks and the Angels – whom we may see in the ALCS.
Coke, who must have still felt weakened from food poisoning, got a huge out w/the tying run on third, and coming right after the wild pitch. Kid shrugged it off and went back to work. Coke has life and Coke has teeth.
It’s just awesome watching the young arms stuff all the ‘prospect hugger’ contempt fans with no attention span make to those who would actually like to see the Yankees grow their arms from within.
Not to mention writers who ridiculed Cashman for over rating our system.
I’m sure Joba wants to try and keep pace with his two buds, and will have the adrenaline going tomorrow night.
