Pirates — of course — claim Claggett

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Sep 24, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed 25-year-old RHP Anthony Claggett off waivers from the Yankees.

Claggett, obtained from Detroit in the Gary Sheffield trade in November 2006, had a 33.75 ERA in 2.2 innings in two appearances for the Yankees. He also was 7-7 with a 3.07 ERA in 34 relief appearances and five starts for Triple-A Scranton.

The Pirates now have Claggett, Ross Ohlendorf, Steven Jackson, Dan McCutchen, Jose Tabata and Jeff Karstens.

There has to be a way they’ll agree to take Kei Igawa.

UPDATE, 9:14 p.m.: As an alert reader pointed out, the Pirates also have RHP Eric Hacker, another former Yankee. So the Pirates have six former Yankees on their 40-man roster. Amazing.

I hope for at least a couple more on the K-Man and The American Idol!

How did Tabata do this year?

  3. Jhutch September 24th, 2009 at 9:08 pm

The Pirates have lost 23 of 26 games. I think we’re gonna be ok.

  4. Betsy September 24th, 2009 at 9:08 pm

Angel and M – thanks for the birthday wishes!

Joe, lol – steakhouses ARE expensive, but man – if I had a last meal, I would go out in a blaze of glory with sirloin, nice and thick, and well-done hash browns.

Bronx Jeers, tonight we got the porterhouse. I normally get an individual sirloin, but this was fine – it was really delicious actually. We got parmesan/garlic steak fries on the side and two potato skins – yum – then shared a cheesecake for dessert. Double yum.

Phil Hughes is not remaining in the pen for his career and the idea that his makeup and mentality are best suited for the pen is absolutely silly. Phil’s unflappable nature and makeup work for him as a starter and that is where he will be, next year and the years after that. You don’t dump a potential #1 starter in the pen……….. He’s also not going to come close to 200 innings.

  5. Art Vandalay September 24th, 2009 at 9:10 pm

    Hey Pete,
you forgot Eric Hacker, who was a major reason the Trenton Thunder won the 2008 Eastern League Championship and was their Opening Day starter this year, he just made his Major League Debut for the Pirates the other night.

  6. Sandman September 24th, 2009 at 9:14 pm

I think Igawa would do ok in the NL as a 4th or 5th starter. We should just give him to the Pirates.

  8. GreenBeret7 September 24th, 2009 at 9:18 pm

Greg Gibson has gotten way out of hand. Lowell had a curve ball go up and in on him, and has just warned both benches after jumping out from behind the plate, screaming at Lerew. Then, Gibson starts screaming at Hillman and actually had to be moved away from Hillman by the crew chief. That guy has no business umpiring games.

  9. GreenBeret7 September 24th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

    Gibson also ran Hillman.

Davis would be an expensive acquisition and not enough of an upgrade over current CF options to be worth it.
    ========

That’s really the question I think. Is he an upgrade? I like Melky and Gardner, and I think they’ve done a really good job this year. How long do the Yankees go with the platoon? I think together they are a good tandem.

That being said, from what I saw of Davis this year (admittedly a limited sample) he’s good defensively and is a pest on the basepaths.

  17. Mister Veeck September 24th, 2009 at 9:31 pm

The next two guys to become Pirates will be Edwar Ramirez (who will be promoted to closer immediately) and Jon Albaledejo. The Yankees will have to DFA these guys sooner or later!

  18. Betsy September 24th, 2009 at 9:31 pm

    S.A……thanks!

  19. Kevin S. September 24th, 2009 at 9:32 pm

I don’t know why the Pirates having six ex-Yanks on the 40 is so remarkable, given that four came from a single trade.

  20. KennyH123 September 24th, 2009 at 9:39 pm

McCutchen is the guy we’ll miss there. Gonna be a good ML pitcher. Saw him pitch a lot, tremendous stuff. Just needs innings. Ohlendorf, too, will be a solid 4th starter type, but Mac projects, at least to me, as better than that.

Tabata will be a big leaguer too… and probably a good one.

  21. Mister Veeck September 24th, 2009 at 9:39 pm

How did the Pirates end up NOT getting Jose Veras? He fits what they are looking for : “Ex Yankee scrub”

  22. L to the 2nd September 24th, 2009 at 9:41 pm

Ohlendorf is a 4th starter – in the NL Central.

    In the AL, he’s roadkill.

  23. Patrick Bateman September 24th, 2009 at 9:42 pm

The Nady/Marte trade will haunt Cashman for a long time. Ultimately he will get nothing out of it. Nobody will give away a first rounder for Nady and the Yankees probably won’t even offer him arbitration anyways.

Marte was signed to a ridiculous deal considering we could have just picked up his option and watched what he could do in NY before giving him a 3 year deal.

Meanwhile Tabata is growing up and Ohlendorf is a decent spot starter.

  24. Arno September 24th, 2009 at 9:44 pm

Watch them develop them into viable players and then sell them back to us and the Redsox at a premium. The Pirates are a development team.

  25. Yeah September 24th, 2009 at 9:45 pm

OMG!! Stop the presses! The Pirates have six ex-Yankees!! ON THEIR 40-MAN ROSTER!!!!! Half a freakin’ dozen!

    Amazing!

  26. Tom in N.J. September 24th, 2009 at 9:46 pm

Jon Albaladejo was a one time Pirate prospect.

  27. m September 24th, 2009 at 9:47 pm

Haunt isn’t quite the right word imo.

    The Marte extension was ill-advised.

But, Tabata had issues and his wife was a nut-job!

Ohlendorf will be bigger off the field than on it. Kid is brilliant. I bet he’ll end up a GM one day. Did you guys read about how he finagled an internship over the winter? He could care less about baseball, it was a great story.

The thing about the Yankees is that they can afford to let these pitchers go. DeSalvo, Clippard, Ohlendorf would never last in New York.

I can’t kill Cashman for this trade. It may not have worked out in Nady’s case, but that was beyond Cash’s control.

  28. Tom in N.J. September 24th, 2009 at 9:49 pm

    Tabata’s getting older, not better.

Tabata: future MVP of Cougar Town?

  30. m September 24th, 2009 at 9:53 pm

During the Angels game they asked they said the Angels were the only team to not hit a GS this year. And they asked “who’s the last Angel to hit a homerun?” So they show the clip, and it just pained me to see that it was given up by Edwar. It pained me because time after time Yankee managers let Edwar face the Angels.

  31. L to the 2nd September 24th, 2009 at 9:53 pm

Tabata could become a nice corner OF

    Or…he could be Lastings Milledge.

Meanwhile, watching a little od DET-CLE. Man, the Indians are God-awful.

  32. Mark in Tampa September 24th, 2009 at 9:54 pm

How is the Nady/Marte trade going to haunt Cashman? Yes, the Yankees didn’t get any value out of the deal, but the Pirates didn’t exactly get a king’s ransom. A deal that should haunt a GM is something like trading Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano, John Smoltz for Doyle Alexander; or Frank Costanza’s favorite, Jay Buehner for Ken Phelps.

  33. GreenBeret7 September 24th, 2009 at 9:55 pm

Not a player in that group going to Pittsburgh was going to cost the Yankees a title. None of them could be kept any longer in the minors because they were out of options. NYY has better than them almost ready. McCutchen and Ohlendorff were not likely to be winning 10 games in the AL East. Ohlendorff wasn’t going to start and even in the weak NL East, he has an ERA of 4.00 with too few strikeouts and too many homers. Jackson was also out of options. Tabata still gets hurt, still has zero power and still causes issues. McCutchen still has no wins to go with his 5.00+ ERA. Tell everyone which player can’t the Yankees live without?

  34. Evan September 24th, 2009 at 9:55 pm

Wait until the Boston Globe enters into bankruptcy and puts Peter on waivers — Pitt will file the waiver claim.

  35. L to the 2nd September 24th, 2009 at 9:55 pm

So Nady got hurt, and Swisher stepped in.

    How’d that work out?

To paraphrase Homer Simpson, Tabata thinks he’s the Pope of Cougar Town.

What is surprising is that the Yankees, this team of so-called mercenaries, has 15 out of their top 25 players who are either home-grown, were minor-leaguers when acquired and made their ML debut with the Yankees, or were signed from overseas and have been Yankees only in their career. And that is not even including Wang.

  67. m September 24th, 2009 at 11:27 pm

Terrible at-bat by Alex Gordon. Swinging at the first pitch when Saito just walked in Olivo. GIDP with the bases loaded.

  68. Mark in Tampa September 24th, 2009 at 11:29 pm

I’m not just saying this because of what he just did, but Alex Gordon’s career is not going the way most of baseball thought it would. He was supposed to be just about as good as Tampa Bay’s Longoria, but he has had 3 disappointing seasons filled with injuries and lackluster performance.

Valerie Bertinelli came out in a surprise show of support later and was asked about the incident. I guess they were having a reunion show.

Bertinelli felt awful, she said that she experimented and did drugs with Phillips when they were teens but Mackenzie always took the rap for her.

Rachael Ray has an amazing recipe for spinach artichoke turkey burgers that is one of my fave things to make. (Not that I cook much).

Anyway, we can finish this tomorrow. I really am going to bed now.

    Good night Yankee people!

Another -sigh- series with the Red Sox. Thank goodness we gave ourselves a little breathing room. Stomach won’t be quite so knotted.

I agree, what I’ll be looking for is the next time Ian Kennedy gets to pitch again. Probably not tonight because of the Kennedy rules? But he perhaps could be the wild card here.

I wonder what the Joba Rules are for tonight? These are still big games and I think Joe has him on a much shorter rope now. Leaving him in to get slapped around more is going to be counterproductive to getting him out and letting him gradually build back into being a good pitcher right now. He really is a almost non factor now, given the inconsistency of the past months what could he show now in the last week that convinces many that he can pitch well in the playoffs.

    Well, Betsy.

You didn’t have any faith that the Yanks would beat Kazmir the other day, either.

You not having faith in someone is hardly a shocker.

Not focusing on the Tit for Tat, I thought Kazmir pitched a great game. Other than the Figgin’s ball off the glove and the Cano two out hit the guy was very tough. It was the ultimate gut check for the Yanks to be able to hold on in a great game and win 3-2. He is a pitcher that I worry about alot based on past performances against the Yanks.

  136. Giuseppe Franco September 25th, 2009 at 8:35 am

The point is that some people have consistently been leaning negative regarding many aspects of this team all season. And that’s a shame.

This team should have earned the fans’ faith when you consider everything they’ve accomplished so far. It’s tough to be better than having the best record in baseball and doing so in the toughest division.

It’s too bad people just can’t sit back and enjoy watching this team play, especially since this has arguably been the best Yankee team we’ve seen in nearly a decade.

  137. jennifer September 25th, 2009 at 8:38 am

Well Red Light Curt is already at it.

CURT TALKS: Curt Schilling retired from the Red Sox in March, but he’s still throwing high and tight. The former ace went after Alex Rodriguez yesterday in an interview on WEEI-850 radio in Boston.

Asked if A-Rod is psyched out about his October struggles continuing, Schilling replied, “I would argue that’s already started – you know my response – when they clinched.”

In the Yankees’ last three postseason appearances – all first-round losses – the slugger has fallen flat. In 2007, he hit .267 with one RBI in four games; in 2006, he hit .071 with no RBI and in 2005, he batted .133 with no RBI.

“His problem has always been that he’s a guy with holes and you can pitch to those holes,” Schilling said. “For a guy that’s as good as he is, he still strikes out a lot. Guys who strike out a lot tend to have a tough time in October.”

  141. Betsy September 25th, 2009 at 8:44 am

GF, what does Joba have to do with the rest of the team? I’m talking about Joba, only Joba, at this point.
Can you come up with any GOOD reasons why someone should have faith that Joba is going to turn it around, starting tonight? I don’t count hope……or just the general expectation that he’ll turn it around because he’s talented. If you have seen signs from the kid that he’s going to turn it on and all of a sudden be a force this year, ok….I’m not about to get into an argument with you even though it almost seems like you are trying to pick one.

Not sure it’s really the toughest division anymore. Was last year, but TB and Tor took big steps backwards. AL West is better top to bottom and they thrashed the AL East in head to head play. Nonetheless, the Yankees have had a great, great year.

  143. Pov September 25th, 2009 at 8:47 am

    Franco

My comment was just on Kazmir in general, it was not a great day for the Yanks and the Sox’s when he went to LA. At some point Stat’s do matter. Data from ESPN.

In his career against the Yankees, Kazmir has a 6-4 record and 2.53 ERA.

Kazmir has made four combined starts against the Red Sox and Yankees this year. He is 4-0, including three quality starts.

Yanks have been scoring 5.6 runs a game and our staff ERA is 4.3. My observation is simply that Kazmir is not a great matchup for us add in the fact that he is a lefty. he has proven that in the past. Your not this way but some on this page just are so blindly positive that the stats don’t matter, we will beat anybody regardless of who they are and who they pitch. So when anyone says anything different they get bl;asted by the like of Trish, Erica ect.

A very large number of Yankee fans are insane bridge jumpers who panic at the drop of a hat.

I don’t imagine you’d want to be part of that crowd.

I’ll say this much, though, I hope those who continue to bludgeon Joba to death are not going to hop back on the bandwagon when he turns it around.

Then again, that’s what Yankee fans do. No stomach for developing young pitchers.

Betsy it’s probably in the words, most fans I think the vast majority want Joba to do well so we in that respect have faith in him. The issue is his pitching and his performance along with his post game attitude and confidence. I could probably count a hundred times the past few months when you’ve said you didn’t have faith in someone or the team for whatever reason.

And, quite frankly, you were wrong most of the time.

Just sit back and enjoy this team. Teams like this don’t come around very often.

  150. Rex September 25th, 2009 at 8:59 am

“Someone tell him to stuff a sock in it.”

That someone should be Arod and the stuffing should be a decent postseason performance.

“His problem has always been that he’s a guy with holes and you can pitch to those holes,” Schilling said.”

Arod hit .395 with a .980 OPS versus Schilling in his career. How’d the Mouth that Roared fail to find “the holes in his swing” 60% of the time?

People get way too wrapped up in postgame comments, good or bad.

Pete has made hay out of postgame comments a number of times this season by various players and most of them were non-stories.

The players only tell the media what they want the public to hear. We really have no idea what is said in that clubhouse when the media isn’t around. But I can guarantee you that we don’t know 75% of what goes on.

Joba says the same thing whether he pitches well or not. So do most of the other players – lots of cliche’s and not always a lot of substance.

  153. jennifer September 25th, 2009 at 9:02 am

And Jeter always tells the media that he doesn’t get wrapped up in his stats and doesn’t really put much thought into numbers.

But he was well aware that he got his 200th hit of the season the other day and wanted the ball as soon as he touched first base.

Unlike breaking Gehrig’s record, this accomplishment was pretty obscure. Yet he knew exactly how many hits he needed.
