The Yankees found some answers as they won two of three in Anaheim. A.J. Burnett was sharp yesterday.

Jerry Hairston Jr. has a potentially serious wrist injury. This notebook also has updates on Jorge Posada, Nick Swisher and A-Rod.

Is anyone else sick of playing the Red Sox? I know it’s only 18, 19 games, but it seems like 180. Them and the Blue Jays. Sometimes I wish the would mix up the divisions.

I like what Mark Teixeira said about beating the Angels in Anaheim. It takes away that subtext in any possible future meeting. I mean, they can say that historically, over the last 5 or so years, the Yankees have had trouble in Anaheim, but they can’t say the Yankees absolutely cannot beat the Angel on the west coast. It seems like all season long the Yankees have knocked down one “obstacle” or another. A great season.

Yeah I was noticing the problem with Safari, which is what I use, not really sure why that’d be the case. Safari uses a very standard way of reading Webpages. If anything, there should be problems on older versions of IE, which don’t display Webpages correctly at all. But Firefox and Safari behave fairly similarly.

  3. Lisa Lesage September 24th, 2009 at 7:59 am

Safari has been acting with mee too lately. I don’t know why. I’m currently using the latest Firefox, and I must say I like it best. Problem solved, by the way.

  4. ditmars1929 September 24th, 2009 at 8:00 am

I haven’t watched a game from LA in a long time because of the usual late starts, but I did get to see yesterday’s game. What the hell is all that junk behind the center field wall?

Doreen, I can’t stand interleague play to begin with, but I’m sick of all the Mets games. I like the Sox games. Toronto gets a bit tedious, you’re right.

  5. upstate kate September 24th, 2009 at 8:00 am

I am also tired of playing the Orioles.
A highlight of yesterday’s win was that the Yankees didn’t have their “A” line-up in, and still won.
I had a booster club meeting and missed Kennedy’s inning. Watched when I got home (Doreen- get that DVR). I was glad I knew the outcome, that was a bit unnerving. I am glad Girardi let him clean up his mess, that has got to be a big confidence builder.

  6. NYYROC September 24th, 2009 at 8:07 am

I hope JHJ can make it back. When he came to the NYY he was so happy to finally get the chance to be on a playoff team.

  7. upstate kate September 24th, 2009 at 8:09 am

JHJ is so versatile, he can play anywhere. I know people got down on him for that error, but I thought he did a good job overall.

  8. Betsy September 24th, 2009 at 8:11 am

Smaketh Downeth, thanks for the birthday wishes!

I don’t have a good feeling about Hairston – man, I’m glad the Angels series is over as it took an annoying toll. It would stink if Hairston couldn’t play in the post-season.

  9. Noreaster September 24th, 2009 at 8:12 am

I just voted for Chad Gaudin to be the 4th starter in the playoffs, was that nuts? I just don’t trust Joba with a big start right now.

  10. upstate kate September 24th, 2009 at 8:14 am

    Happy Birthday Betsy :)
Hope you get your wish this weekend, a stress free red sox series.

  11. Nick @ Tex's Alma Mater September 24th, 2009 at 8:17 am

I know Pete said he was taking the day off today, but I hope he posts at least a little something to keep me distracted at work ;)

  12. Rex September 24th, 2009 at 8:19 am

In honor of the Year of the Walkoff Pie, some reasonably easy Yankees walkoff postseason trivia:

    1) Name the last Yankee to have a postseason walkoff hit.
    2) Name the last Yankee to have a World Series walkoff hit.
    3) Name the last player to beat the Yankees with a postseason walkoff hit
    4) Name the last player to beat the Yankees with a walkoff hit in the World Series

Extra credit to those who can name the year, series & game, and offending pitcher.

  13. Wang IS Taiwan September 24th, 2009 at 8:21 am

I think Pete’s probably fast asleep right now. Hope so, anyway.

  14. Wang IS Taiwan September 24th, 2009 at 8:22 am

Oh, and Happy Bday, Betsy. Enjoy your big day. Love bdays, though not the aging process. That stinks.

  15. vinny-b September 24th, 2009 at 8:25 am

    Rex:

don’t know. But i know Jose Vizcaino is in there, somewhere. He was golden

  16. upstate kate September 24th, 2009 at 8:28 am

    Rex-
    2001 Jeter off Kim?

  17. Doreen September 24th, 2009 at 8:29 am

Happy Birthday, Betsy! Enjoy the day. :)

If Hairston’s injury proves to be serious enough to keep him off the playoff roster, does he still get to stay with the team? Same with Nady or Wang? And what about guys that are simply left off the roster because they didn’t make the cut (perhaps Hinske or Cervelli or Mitre)?

  18. Giuseppe Franco September 24th, 2009 at 8:30 am

Vizcaino was in 2000 against the Mets.

Jeter and Soriano had walk off hits against the D-Backs in 2001 in consecutive days (Games 4 & 5).

  19. upstate kate September 24th, 2009 at 8:31 am

and Gonzales off Mo, also 2001?

  20. Rex September 24th, 2009 at 8:32 am

Vinny – Vizcaino had the walk off single in Game 1 in 2000. Wasn’t the last Yankees WS walkoff hit though.

Kate – Close, but no cigar.

  21. Betsy September 24th, 2009 at 8:33 am

Upstate Kate, thank you! On Friday, I will be spending some time with friends, so I won’t have a chance to be nervous, lol.

Wang, thank you! Age is just a number, however…..and remember that aging beats the alternative.

  22. Nice Guy September 24th, 2009 at 8:34 am

Great win all around last night. Lots of positive signs:

    1) The Yanks won a game and a series against a tough Angels club in Anaheim.
    2) Burnett was great. You’d ideally like to see him go deeper, but with our bullpen it’s not a big deal.
    3) Robbie had a huge hit with 2 men in scoring position and 2 outs.
    4) Melky’s been slumping but came up with a big RBI double.
    5) Marte & Coke are key parts of the bullpen mix, and they pitched well.
    6) The Yanks scored 3 runs against a tough pitcher without A-rod, Damon, Jorge or Swisher.

  23. Rex September 24th, 2009 at 8:34 am

    G. Franco has the answer to #2, which is Soriano, who singled off Albie Lopez in the 12 inning of Game 5 in 2001, the night after Jeter’s walkoff homer in Game 4.

  24. Giuseppe Franco September 24th, 2009 at 8:35 am

The last walk off against the Yanks had to be Game 5 of the ALCS. I think it was Ortiz.

Whomever hit the dinger off Weaver (Gonzalez?) against the Marlins in 2003 was the last WS walk off against them.

  25. Betsy September 24th, 2009 at 8:35 am

    Doreen, thank you!

I really hope Hinkse is on the roster – he doesn’t seem to play much. Maybe Joe is not a fan? I like having him on the bench – for him to be left off would be silly.

Cervelli has to be on the roster in case Molina or Po get hurt….it would be nice to see Joe give him a start or two just so he can keep relatively sharp.

  26. Art September 24th, 2009 at 8:36 am

How did Hinske get in the doghouse in the first place? Do we just not need Pinch Hitters and is that all he is good for?

  27. Nice Guy September 24th, 2009 at 8:38 am

I would think they leave Cervelli off the post-season roster, and then just add him if Po or Molina go down. It makes no sense for him to take up a roster spot.

  28. Rex September 24th, 2009 at 8:38 am

“2) Burnett was great. You’d ideally like to see him go deeper, but with our bullpen it’s not a big deal.”

I’ll respectfully disagree. He struck out a lot of guys, but was not great. He put 10 guys on base and only got 17 outs. Allowing the opposition to get on base at a .370 clip and requiring 10 outs from the pen is not a great day. It’s only a good one because he did make some tough pitches when he needed to. But overall, that was more a B- performance than it was an A or A+.

  29. Giuseppe Franco September 24th, 2009 at 8:40 am

Hinske was acquired to be a power bat off the bench. He’s not a good enough defender to play that often.

  30. Betsy September 24th, 2009 at 8:40 am

Wow, Rex – you are a seriously tough grader. If it hadn’t been 100 degrees, AJ would still be out there.

  31. Rex September 24th, 2009 at 8:42 am

    GF:

You have it for the most part. Have to go to a meeting, so:

    1) Aaron Boone, Game 7 2003 ALCS off Wakefield
    2) Soriano, Game 5 2001 WS off Albie Lopez
    3) Travis Hafner, Game 2 ALDS (the bug game)off L. Vizcaino
    4) Alex Gonzalez, Game 4 WS, off J Weaver.

  32. Giuseppe Franco September 24th, 2009 at 8:45 am

    Burnett did just fine yesterday.

His stuff was outstanding and he was able to bend but not break against a very tough offense and an excellent situational hitting team.

Keep in mind that Girardi also took him out after 100 pitches because it was so hot out there. He could have finished the inning and perhaps started the 7th.

The fact that he battled all day long against a very good team on the road is a very good sign that he’s turning things around.

  33. upstate kate September 24th, 2009 at 8:49 am

I liked how mad AJ was when Girardi came out to take him out of the game, he wasn’t ready to leave. Also liked that he never had that melt down inning even tho he had men on base every inning.

  34. Doreen September 24th, 2009 at 8:51 am

The desire to carry a third catcher and a pinch-running specialist kind of complicates the post-season roster, doesn’t it?

Otherwise, why wouldn’t the playoff roster be basically the same as the regular season roster?

Fewer pitchers are needed, I guess, so that frees up some space.

Did anybody read AJ’s lips as he walked off the mound? I hope the manager did not hear it or at least ignored it. There was at least one F word. AJ is fired up for the rest of the year !

  37. Fran (the original) and OPPC member September 24th, 2009 at 9:04 am

    Tom,
I read AJ’s lips! But Girardi said he liked the fire in AJ and would expect that none of his pitchers would want to be taken out of a game.

    Betsy,
Happy Birthday. Enjoy your day :)

“I’m close,” Burnett said. “I’m really in tune with my delivery now and I have a lot of confidence in what I’m doing. It’s a big difference. I’ll remember what it felt like, what my delivery felt like, being on time and clicking. … I’m feeling great going into October.”

    that’s music to my ears.

that’s what was missing before . his timing was all out of whack.

with pettitte also throwing well and feeling fine after his start after missing a turn, the yankee rotation is looking a lot better than it was looking a week ago.

    doreen-
i’m with you. i wish they’d ship the red sox to the national league and play them once a year every now and then :)

I wasn’t here yesterday, but I can imagine everyone was ready to cut their throats when Kennedy was out there yesterday, or cursing Girardi to the high heavens when he left him in there with the bases loaded. Gotta go back and read it. I assume they will be very entertaining.

I am very happy for Ian Kennedy. He had a little trouble, but it was his first game up since the surgery. I really want him to do well and i think he can still be an asset to the team as he builds confidence.

Yanks have the night off while Sox play KC in a night get away game.

Seems like the first time in a long time it’s the other team and not the Yanks who will be arriving to the hotel/home at 3 or 4 am.

  46. Bill Porter September 24th, 2009 at 9:22 am

I really think Joe G is doing a great job this year balancing playing time and the need to keep guys healthy among other things like not not killing the Pen (condolences to Scott Proctor on his right arm). I really get a sense that Joe knows what he’s doing and that he’s very comfortable doing it. This team is in good hands.

At some point Joe’s name will have to come up in the Manager Of The Year discussions. I know it’s too early and he manages on a mound of money and all that junk but the job he’s done this year has really been magnificent. I do hope he’s appreciated.

  47. upstate kate September 24th, 2009 at 9:24 am

that was a definite confidence builer for IPK, and he had a good attitude in the post game, acknowledging he got into some trouble

  48. Bill Greeves September 24th, 2009 at 9:26 am

What’s the point of even separating the story into two pages? This is the internet; there is no need to conserve space.

  49. haiku-man September 24th, 2009 at 9:27 am

I wasn’t ready to cut my throat, when Ian took the mound,I couldn’t breath.

Yankees erased inability to win in LA,even without having their A-team on the field.

This team finds way to get it done.

  50. randy l. September 24th, 2009 at 9:40 am

    http://www.ocregister.com/arti.....n-scioscia

“•Angels fans should cheer, instead of loudly booing, every time Mark Teixeira comes to the plate.
Why? Because if Teixeira had accepted the Angels’ eight-year, $160 million offer last winter, Scioscia admits the team wouldn’t have had the financial flexibility to sign free agents Juan Rivera, Brian Fuentes and Bobby Abreu.
And with Tex at first base, who knows where Kendry Morales would have played this season? Maybe DH, maybe Triple-A.
Teixeira (37 HRs, league-leading 118 RBIs) is a strong MVP candidate, but Rivera, Abreu and Morales have combined for 67 homers and 279 RBIs. And Fuentes leads the AL with 44 saves.”

interesting way of looking at how the angels adjusted to losing teixeira , but teixeira is where he’s supposed to be being a difference maker with the yankees.

his addition to the yankees makes a whole lot of players better, arod, the other infielders
because of his receiving the ball ability at first base, the pitchers because of his overall defense. even players like cano because cano doesn’t have to be counted on so much before he’s figured out how to hit with risp.

i don’t think that article mentions that the angels must have got two draft picks too.

all in all a good deal for everyone concerned.

Anyone receive notification of ability to buy playoff tickets??? Waiting for this email is agonizing…

  52. NYY626 September 24th, 2009 at 9:48 am

Happy Birthday Betsy! I would have hoped for a Yankee win on your birthday, but since they aren’t playing, we’re just going to have to go for a red sox loss :) . I want to see a picture of Lou by tonight.

  53. Anthony September 24th, 2009 at 10:49 am

I got the playoff email monday and was able to buy my tickets (2 to ALDS and 2 to ALCS) yesterday at 10. I got home game 1 ALDS and home game 2 ALCS

  55. Jonathan B September 24th, 2009 at 7:34 pm

LOL, East Coasters, you guys are funny. The “usual late starts”? 7 p.m. is a late start for you? God don’t go to bed early like wussies then. I realize that on your fake time it’s 10 p.m., but in real time it’s only 7 for one, and two, even 10 p.m. who cares? Game’s over by 1, no biggie, just don’t go to bed like a wuss at 10 or something. Seriously it’s not that hard. I’m really glad I live on the West Coast as a sports fan, well, and as a human being, but I digress.
