Champagne for somebody

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Sep 25, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees have a magic number of five to clinch the division and could do so this weekend by sweeping the Red Sox.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox have a magic number of three to clinch the wild card, which they also could do this weekend.

The Yankees passed on celebrating a playoff berth on Saturday, deciding they would wait until they wrapped up the division. But the Red Sox, knowing the division is likely out of reach, plan to bust out the bubbly if they clinch.

“Oh, we will … hopefully,” David Ortiz told Ian Browne of MLB.com. “So we don’t have to get our clubhouse dirty. Oh, we have to. Of course. We have to roll like that. That’s how we do it.”

The Red Sox have an eight-game lead on Texas in the wild card. Boston has 10 games left.

we need a sweep….cant have these scums celebrating here

  2. j0e September 25th, 2009 at 12:23 pm

Celebrate winning the wild card? That’s something to be proud of. They should make a rule that the only way you can celebrate is if you actually WIN your division.

  3. Robbykid September 25th, 2009 at 12:25 pm

David Ortiz and his .235 batting average….shouldnt be allowed to celebrate…

“we need a sweep….cant have these scums celebrating here”

That’s OK, let them celebrate their wild card. The way the Sox have been playing on the road, they’ll be wishing they traded for VMart a month earlier. I’m not sure if a team benefits from their home park more than the Sox have this year. Just take a look at Pedroia’s splits.

Good luck covering that stupid team.

They can dirty up our clubhouse all they want and it would still look 100x better than that dump they play in :)

  7. m shirt September 25th, 2009 at 12:26 pm

Yeah. And good luck getting an intelligible quote from Ortiz to put on your new blog Pete.

  8. rockindabronx September 25th, 2009 at 12:28 pm

typical mindset of a second rate team

  9. Jeff September 25th, 2009 at 12:34 pm

Why would either have to clinch this weekend? Say Texas wins every game they play this weekend and neither Boston or NY sweep this weekend, then neither NY or Boston would clinch anything.

  10. jennifer September 25th, 2009 at 12:35 pm

If the soxs win both Friday and Saturday and the Rangers lose Friday. Than the soxs would be able to celebrate at YS after the game Saturdays game. The Rangers play a night game Saturday and Sunday.

  11. Brian September 25th, 2009 at 12:37 pm

Hey Pete, you forgot the * next to Ortiz’s name like how you put them next to A-Rod’s name.

  12. Joe September 25th, 2009 at 12:38 pm

Interesting, if we sweep the Sox, and then TX gets swept. Both team could be celebrating on Sunday.

  13. Chris September 25th, 2009 at 12:38 pm

Imagine if we sweep and texas loses three…They’d be celebrating at the same time.

  14. Chris September 25th, 2009 at 12:39 pm

    wow jinx

  15. jennifer September 25th, 2009 at 12:39 pm

Would they celebrate after a loss, I wonder. Say they lost Sunday, but would be in due to a Ranger loss Saturday night. Would they break out the bubbly?

And who supplies it? If the Yankees do, they should buy the cheapest garbage possible.

  16. jennifer September 25th, 2009 at 12:39 pm

It wouldn’t be possible. Our game would be over before the Rangers. So they’d be out of the park by than.

  17. Tom in N.J. September 25th, 2009 at 12:40 pm

    Good point, Vin.

Let’s look at the home and road splits for the Sox:

    Home: 283BA .363OBP .495SLG .858OPS

    Road: .259BA .342OBP .418SLG .760OPS

Now The Yankees Home and road splits:

    Home: .283BA .366OBP .490SLG .857OPS

    Road: .284BA .357OBP .470SLG .826OPS

  18. CountryClub September 25th, 2009 at 12:41 pm

I cant stand Ortiz; but he’s been crushing the ball lately and he’s been pounding the Yanks all year.

Youkilis isnt playing tonight. I’m sure he was going to get a game off this weekend anyway, but it’s funny that he chose the Joba game to rest him.

  19. Chris September 25th, 2009 at 12:41 pm

true, i assumed an 8:05 espn game.

  20. jennifer September 25th, 2009 at 12:41 pm

Sundays game for the Rangers is at 3pm. Our game starts at 1. so it should be over before there’s. The Yankees should make sure to kick the soxs out as soon as the game is over.

  21. smile for the camera September 25th, 2009 at 12:42 pm

we’ll see who’s celebrating after the playoffs are over

    (re-post)

Don, we are just now at the halfway point between the end of season 5 and the start of season 6. It’s almost too much to take.

Thank goodness for Yankee baseball and Cal Bears/NY Giants football. And, um, the daily joys we get from friends and family.

  23. Chris September 25th, 2009 at 12:43 pm

If that happened they wouldn’t get a chance to celebrate, that would be priceless.

  27. smile for the camera September 25th, 2009 at 12:47 pm

    Ortiz’s season: .237 avg., .331 OBP, .459 Slugging, .790 OPS

keep talking dude, you’re past your prime, no roids, older, fatter, get ready for that steady decline… i love it

  28. Tom in N.J. September 25th, 2009 at 12:48 pm

I don’t watch lost. However, I now believe that the entire series is nothing but a figment of Jose Molina’s imagination.

  29. vin September 25th, 2009 at 12:48 pm

    Tom,

They have an imbalanced offense. All those righties who feast on the monster are so much less effective on the road.

Their numbers would be even uglier if the Orioles had any pitching. The Sox had an OPS of .950 in the 18 games against Baltimore this year!

They’re a tough team, but not playing the majority of their games at home will really hurt them.

  30. Nick in SF in Santa Rosa September 25th, 2009 at 12:51 pm

The answers can be found… in Francisco Cervelli’s gaze.

  31. Abdababdaserser September 25th, 2009 at 12:51 pm

The Yankees celebrated a WC clinch before. It is still an accomplishment for a team to get into the playoffs.

I still feel that this first round makes little sense. They play all these games, and it comes down to a best of 5 series which makes it easier to move on if you have a weaker all around rotation, but a stronger 1-2.

I wouldn’t mind seeing the Red Sox celebrating their clinching in YS if it came with them being swept and the Rangers losing. It seems that would put a bit of a damper on the celebration. Yay, we lost the game, lost the series but clinched the Wild Card.

Meanwhile the Yankees would celebrate clinching the division, possibly clinching HFA and the best record in baseball.

How ever it goes though, the Yankees earned this. They should finish the season with at least 100 wins, not too shabby.

I wonder what Ortiz’s drug of choice is for this season. He wasn’t hitting the ball very far, then his daddy comes to visit and shortly thereafter his power magically returns.

That is only because Youk’s head is so large (Bond’s sized) it has its own gravitational pull. The ball just bounces off the atmosphere unless its coming in at just the right angle.

  38. Pat M. September 25th, 2009 at 12:58 pm

Nick in SF….Yanks a sligh bow-wow at The Stadium tonight….Is the talk up in the Bay Area about the possiblility that the Cal Berkley Bears looking past Oregon….. My guy has Cal -5….Any thoughts

the red sox should be a much better team in the playoffs than they have in the regular season because beckett and lester will pitch such a high percentage of games and buchholz is pitching very well.

i watched buccholz last night and the kansas city hitters were not squaring up the ball at all on him. i hate to say it , but he looks like hes going to be for real.

the one thing that can derail the red sox is they are very bad against stolen bases and the angels if they get the right runners on could run wild on vmart. varitek is not going to be catching hardly at all the playoffs which is their catching controversy.

hopefully the angels will take the red sox out in the first round, but it’ll be good if they face the red sox in the playoffsif the yankees can figure out lester better tonight than other teams have lately.

i’d run tonight against their catcher whoever it is. why not pressure the one part of the game they’re really bad at ? it’s one way to mess up their pitchers by having them worry about runners stealing.

  40. CountryClub September 25th, 2009 at 12:58 pm

Nope, he never hit him. But he did throw at him numerous times (and I’m ok with that, just with they werent all at head level).

  41. vin September 25th, 2009 at 1:00 pm

“Something lost in all the hype of that situation is that Joba has never hit Youk.”

    Wow, never realized that.

No pitcher has hit Youkilis 3 times in his career. But three have hit him twice (as far as I can tell). Among those three… Mo. Go figure.

  44. Doreen September 25th, 2009 at 1:02 pm

    Hmm,

I wonder if that scenario unfolds, both teams clinching on Sunday, which team will get the most coverage, the Yankees for winning the division? Or the most-favored nation Red Sox? That will be very interesting, indeed. :)

I actually think it would be pretty cool.

    Maine Yankee -

    1. Yankees have celebrated the wild card before.

    2. Who cares? It is an accomplishment to win the wild card, but the only celebration that matters is the one for winning the series. Let them have their fun. A lot of you people need to lighten up.

  47. Hokiehill September 25th, 2009 at 1:06 pm

Maybe Joba will “accidentally” throw one into the dugout…I’m not a fan of him plunking people (unless it’s in retaliation) but I would laugh if that happened.

  48. Andrew GTLU Bronze Medalist September 25th, 2009 at 1:09 pm

They key is that as long as they play reasonably well during the homestand, the Yankees should clinch at home; at least the stadium can feel the good vibes of winning the division at home.

  49. A-ROD! A-ROD! September 25th, 2009 at 1:10 pm

i really don’t understand the anti-celebration sentiment. i think it was retarded that they didn’t celebrate their play-off berth. that is part of the game. i agree, lighten up folks.

  50. Pat M. September 25th, 2009 at 1:10 pm

Randy I ( The Original Tin Cup ) I too look for the Halos to take out the BoSox if they can overcome their deficient bullpen…..The Angel Track Team will just eat up Boston at both end of their battery……I just rather not have to deal with Fenway & Beckett & Lester as well as Bucholtz who is pitching very well…..Kinda hoped that Joba would have had a season comprable to his….He is younger, but still he’s been a disappointment for much of the season….

  51. pat September 25th, 2009 at 1:11 pm

Dice K has hit Alex 3 times in 18 PA so load him up with armor when he steps in against him this weekend.

Re: all the talk of clinching, the good news to me is that at least the fans in New York can be there when the team clinches, as long as the Yankees play reasonably well against BOS and KC on the last homestand. I don’t care when Boston gets the Wild Card since ultimately it’s a let-down for them to not finish ahead of the Yankees; but it will be nice to see the Yankees celebrating at home again.

  53. Pat M. September 25th, 2009 at 1:12 pm

Slu, Yanks won the first wild card in 95 and they did celebrate, the second time was in 2007, and I don’t recall a celebration

  54. j0e September 25th, 2009 at 1:17 pm

I agree with Pat M in saying i don’t recall them celebrating in 2005. If it were me, I would never celebrate a wild card. I don’t see the point in celebrating being “2nd best” or in baseball’s case..4th best.

i do wonder if the Yankees MGMT could actually BAN the sox from doing any kind of celebration ..

  58. betsy September 25th, 2009 at 1:19 pm

Pat M, yes – you sent your birthday wishes yesterday and I appreciate it. Nope, I’m 38 and proud of it. I won’t ever spend any of my time wishing for youth that I can’t get back, lol.

I just want to see the Yankees clinch, but not with AJ on the mound……so he can throw a banana cream pie in Girardi’s face. What a waste of a good pie, though – there is nothing in the world like a good banana cream pie.

  59. Nick in SF in Santa Rosa September 25th, 2009 at 1:21 pm

Pat M, looking ahead to U$C is always a danger, but hopefully the players know that Oregon is dangerous in its own right… I think they all know how tough Autzen is, and Tedford was Oregon’s offensive coordinator before he came to Cal, so… hopefully looking past the Ducks won’t be a problem. Still, it could be a classic trap game if Oregon wasn’t a good team. I am not going to invest too much (financially) in the outcome.

  60. vin September 25th, 2009 at 1:22 pm

I have no problem with a team celebrating the wild card. These guys play 6 times a week for 6 straight months. I would want my employees taking a couple hours (if that) to celebrate at the end of it.

What would be strange would be celebrating both the playoff berth then the division clincher a week or two later. Not even sure the players would want to do that… unless if they really like the feel of champagne in their eyes.

  61. Tom in N.J. September 25th, 2009 at 1:22 pm

The Yankees wouldn’t ban the Red Sox doing anything. Heck, they let Sox fans without tickets into the stadium so they could celebrate in ’04….

  62. betsy September 25th, 2009 at 1:24 pm

I never thought Bucholz was not going to be good….I still have no idea how he’ll do in the playoffs, but then we have our own question marks. It makes me wish that Phil was back in the rotation – well, hopefully the confidence he’s gained in the pen will be an advantage for him next year, but I still have regrets.

  63. Tom in N.J. September 25th, 2009 at 1:24 pm

  65. A-ROD! A-ROD! September 25th, 2009 at 1:29 pm

it’s almost disrespectful not to celebrate, IMO. For the Yanks to claim they are above baseball tradition borders on the disrespectful.

  66. S.o.S. September 25th, 2009 at 1:29 pm

    Whats up fellas.

I think the Yankees should celebrate the division by throwing the tarp on the field. Spraying the tarp with bubblies and doing the slip n slide all on it while getting drunk. Whos with me?

  67. Abdababdaserser September 25th, 2009 at 1:34 pm

In 2007 the Yankees broke out the champagne in Tropicana Field when they clinched the wild card.

Getting to the post season is still getting to the post season, regardless of how you do it.

The Sox won’t get swept! They’ll be 2.5 out on Monday morn!

  72. Noreaster September 25th, 2009 at 3:32 pm

  73. Scud Missile September 25th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
