    YES.

A few shaky moments for the pen, but all in all a good win against Lester (glad that the kid is OK).

  2. islesfan September 25th, 2009 at 11:05 pm

    Gehrig gets no love.

What a night by Varitek. Nothing makes me quite as happy as watching Captain Facemask fail.

  6. Betsy September 25th, 2009 at 11:06 pm

    Nice win……

  7. vtyankeefan-the original!! September 25th, 2009 at 11:06 pm

What other picture could you choose? classic!

  8. Rob B (Officially on the Jeter for MVP bandwagon) September 25th, 2009 at 11:06 pm

    Gehrig got skipped. :(

Okay, so that’s not really a bad thing.

A sweep would be so nice, but 2 out of 3 will be okay with me.

  9. Luds September 25th, 2009 at 11:07 pm

Pete you better prepare a nice Picture of Billy Martin for next game!

By the way, Joba pitched very well tonight. That is a very encouraging sign. I guess he does want to be a postseason starter after all.

  14. JasonR September 25th, 2009 at 11:08 pm

Sorry for the empty post. It said that Varitek is a bum and Tito would be insane to let him catch these next two games or any playoff games. Here’s hoping Tito is off his rocker. :)

  17. Carl September 25th, 2009 at 11:10 pm

Man you talk about an epic picture. Come on Yanks!

  18. pat September 25th, 2009 at 11:10 pm

When Joba says he only had a few bad pitches tonight, he’d be right.

the best thing about NESN is listening to them cry in the post game.

It’s incredible that the Yankees have a chance to tie the season series after starting 0-8.

  24. Doreen September 25th, 2009 at 11:12 pm

Looks like I’m about to be eliminated pretty soon (tomorrow???) with a 98-win prediction.

  25. m September 25th, 2009 at 11:12 pm

    Cano!

Gammons wrote a column today. He said that this series was going to be used as a learning tool.

What did the Yankees & Sox learn?

    Yankees:

    1. You can run
    2. You can put up runs

    Sox:

    1. The Yankees can run
    2. The Yankees can put up runs

  27. Laura - Matsui will be a Yankee in 2010!! September 25th, 2009 at 11:13 pm

Joba pitched well tonight, which is a good thing because I was ready to green light a trade to SEA for King Felix. I’m not 100% convinced that he’s righted the ship, but if he pitches well in his final start, that would ease my fears.

  28. trisha - OPPC lifetime member who is missing the worry gene September 25th, 2009 at 11:13 pm

100 pitches, seriously at this point I will be surprised if the Yanks don’t sweep. What an amazing turnaround in terms of the teams’ positioning!

Can y’all remember the fear on this forum (of course excluding the forum fearless – OPPC and company!) when beantown had an 8-0 lead in the series. I swear that some people were convinced that the Sux were going to be leading the Yankees to the promised land, and not vice versa.

Laura, as yankee fans can we excercise some sort of patience? king felix has 4-5 years of major league pitching experience. This is joba’s first year as a starter. Lets cut him some slack.

What a great game. Big games from Joba and A-Rod, and they ran all over Varitek. Another start like this from Joba and Girardi is going to have to really think about choosing the 4 pitcher format for the ALDS. Joba over the Tiger’s 4th starter is a huge advantage for the Yankees if he can pitch this well.

  65. adrian mckinty September 25th, 2009 at 11:32 pm

This is an oldie but a goldie:

A man and his dog walk into a bar. The man proclaims, “I’ll bet you a round of drinks that my dog can talk.”

Bartender: “Yeah! Sure … go ahead.”

    Man: “What covers a house?”

    Dog: “Roof.”

    Man: “How does sandpaper feel?”

    Dog: “Rough!”

Man: “Who was the greatest baseball player of all time?”

    Dog: “Ruth!”

Man: “Pay up. I told you he could talk.”

The bartender, annoyed at this point, throws both of them out the door. Sitting on the sidewalk, the dog looks at the guy and says, “or is the greatest player Mantle?”

Betsy, I’m just trying to give you lessons in being positive! If you overcorrect, you eventually get to the midpoint. And since that’s your wish, I want to help any way I can.

If there was such a thing as “don’t worry dust” those of us with extra to spare would lovingly sprinkle it around for anyone who wanted it. It’s the one thing I have that I really wish I could somehow zap into others only because if you don’t know the feeling of letting life roll without sweating and actually feeling optimism all the time, you would want the world to share it because it is such a really good and happy way to go. It may sound ridiculous but I am being so sincere. From the first day of the season I never worried about the team and always knew they’d end up on top. That means I didn’t have any angst at all, all season. And look where we are. There is no way you can say that doesn’t beat worrying and obssessing all season because it ended up being needless worry.

I’m not criticizing by any means, just wishing that people could find the way to enjoy and not worry. It’s just better in every possible way. Is all.

“Can you imagine the amount of drama we would have endured this season if Steinbrenner was still alive?”

    Oh yeah!

There were times I had wished that the old George was still at the reins, but in retrospect I have to say that Girardi was absolutely the bromide that this team needed. He really worked some magic under very adverse circumstances. One place I believe he made a huge difference was in the way he handled the pen. It is amazing that we are at the end of the season and actually can think of pen as still being pretty fresh. (I do anyway.) That in itself is amazing.

A few years ago, the consensus was that the Saints were going to demolish the Bears in the NFC Championship game…………and, well, that’s not what happened. They can blather all they want to…..that said, I still hope the Angels knock the Sox on their keisters.

The Globe’s Nick Cafardo today wrote “The Red Sox might very well watch the Yankees celebrate the American League East championship this weekend at Yankee Stadium, but can we all say in unison, “So what?’’

It’s amazing how the Boston media downplays winning the Division. You’d think after watching the team they cover have the best home record in the AL and a putrid below .500 record on the road, they’d be smart enough to acknowledge that home field advantage is crucial to the Red Sox.

The Yankees play in the toughest Division in baseball. If the Red Sox were in the same position the Yankees are in right now, Cafardo’s first paragraph would read totally different. It doesnt matter. The Sox are in serious touble if Lester is injured for the next 2 weeks.

It was an absolute joy watching Jason Varitek’s performance tonight both behind the plate and with a bat in his hands. If you look up the words “washed up” in the dictionary, you’ll find Varitek’s mutt as Example #1.

Fellow Yankee fans, please take a minute to put this in perspective…. how great would it be to win the next two games and beat the Red Sox, in our beautiful new stadium and wrap up the AL East. Who knows, maybe this is the last time we see the Red Sox this year, maybe the Angels step it up and actually don’t embarrass themselves and maybe beat the Sox and the last time we see them is with a hitter walking back to the bench while Mo celebrates (calmly and dignified of course) the final out of the game on Sunday. Wouldn’t that be a treat? Just think of that game in 2004 where they didn’t bunt on Schilling or earlier in the series when they squeezed Rivera vs. Millar before the Roberts steal… all whiped out… all gone…

Really, no matter what happens after that, we really should hope we get the chance to enjoy these next two games!

But in the end we know there’s no real way to pass the iron horse.

11 straight 1000+ OPS seasons. Unreal.

  102. jeff September 26th, 2009 at 12:01 am

Drive 4-5, to add to your comments… the Red Sox have only won the AL East 1 time in the past 17 years right? Yes, it’s a big deal, I agree, if the Sox were winning, they’d be celebrating…

“yet the mediots are non-believers. LOL – I’ve learned not to care about them. ”

There ya go Bets!!! I told ya. :)

“I think my negativity comes from me just wanting to prepare for the worst, so that I can’t be disappointed when the worst happens/the best doesn’t happen. I’m either channeling Ben Franklin or I’m like the character in Peanuts, with the cloud over his head, lol”

Ha ha ha!!! You know, there might be something to that “preparing for the worst” theory. Maybe that’s exactly what you do because you really do move away from the negative mode quickly when you have reason to do so.

I have this sappy kind of team love/team loyalty thing going on so that if things fall apart, I am never devastated by it because I’m always proud of them for trying their best, even when it doesn’t work out. So for me not being prepared for bad outcomes isn’t ever a big deal because I have other things that help me with relatively fast recovery. I’m probably missing relevant brain cells but it still gets me through the night!

  104. m September 26th, 2009 at 12:04 am

I know the Sox were tired.

But it was nice to see the Yankees set the tone for the series.

They really did look like they play in two different leagues.

I expect the Sox to come out swinging tomorrow. But there won’t be too much rest for the weary, as it’s an afternoon game.

  105. CB September 26th, 2009 at 12:06 am

“I expect the Sox to come out swinging tomorrow. But there won’t be too much rest for the weary, as it’s an afternoon game.”

Sox had their chance to swing tonight.

Tomorrow they get CC. And he’s still got a shot to win 20.

And the yanks get Dice K.

jeff – I am all for it! I absolutely want to sweep and do all the things you said. What better way to christen our new home?

Someone asked earlier if we would rather beat Boston or KC for the clinch. He or she had a baseball reason for asking that – I forget what the hook was – but I would much rather beat the Suxers for the clinch, for every reason in the world. I feel bad for KC, though they have been playing very good ball lately. Let them keep their dignity – heck maybe they even take a game from us. I want to tie it up on Sunday.

On top of that, it makes the wild card even dicier if we sweep. Of course Texas has to cooperate. So far so good!

The Twins are primed to take the AL Central. Nine games left: 5 versus the lowly Royals, and 4 against the Tigers.

Shame on everyone who didn’t have any faith that this team could beat the Red Sox tonight with Joba on the mound against Lester.

Those who do have fiath in this team have been rewarded all season and have certainly enjoyed watching this team play that much more than the naysayers and bridge jumpers.

  113. Bronx Jeers September 26th, 2009 at 12:16 am

Not in our house you’re celebrating!

Leapfrogging Gehrig? I like it. Now let’s leapfrog Jeter and set it up for some Sunday champagne.

And no goggles. Old school red eyes all the way.

  114. rb September 26th, 2009 at 12:17 am

Trisha, the idea about clinching on Monday against KC was suggested because AJ is pitching and it would give him a psychological boost to win that game. Not sure if I agree with the point, it is the Royals after all.

I have to admit however, I would love if they clinch on Monday because I’ll be at that game! But I think I’ll settle for clinching against the Sox… ;)

  115. 100 pitches of fun... September 26th, 2009 at 12:18 am

FYI, Gio Gonzalez a young lefty is pitching against the Angels. 6 shut out innings so far, he has terrific stuff. If you remember the Yanks couldn’t touch him when they faced him……He was the main player the White Sox traded to Oakland in the Swisher trade. LOL

Aww rb, those are two very good reasons for a Monday clinch. Now I’m torn. I have to admit that there is something about clinching against Boston in our house that feels extremely cathartic. Best I can say is that if for any reason it doesn’t happen Sunday I would definitely want it to happen on Monday.

I hope Jim Leyland runs Verlander out there on short rest down the stretch to secure a playoff spot for the Tigers. A one game playoff between the Twins and Tigers would help the Yankees because they would not face Verlander in Game 1.

  124. Drive 4-5 September 26th, 2009 at 12:27 am

    Bronx Jeers,

I’m jealous! Which did you enjoy more at the game tonight?

1.The Yankees hitting Lester like he pitching batting practice?

    2. A Rod’s performance?

    3. Jason Varitek humiliating by striking out 3 times, hitting into a double play, allowing 7 stolen bases and a passed ball?

  125. Giuseppe Franco September 26th, 2009 at 12:27 am

I’m also torn on the Yanks clinching Sunday because my Dolphins are playing the late afternoon game on the West Coast and I have an older TiVo which doesn’t allow me to watch/record two programs at once like the newer models.

I’d love to see them sweep the series again but I wouldn’t be too upset if they do it Monday night instead.

  126. Bronx Jeers September 26th, 2009 at 12:30 am

“The Yankees stay hot on Fridays: 17-7 record. ”

    And 11-2 at home.

It’s unreal for all us Friday night tickets planners.

For years we sort of suffered with mediocrity. This season? It was just awesome.

    A. 1st win in the new stadium

    B. 5 walk-off wins. 6 if you count the weekday game we were forced to buy in April…Melky”s first walk off vs. the A’s. The Gardner inside the parker. The 15 inning game. etc. etc.

    C. Jeter’s record breaking hit.

Nothing would be better than cliniching infront of the Sox. Let’s just hope the Yanks win one of the next two games otherwise they would need a sweep of the Royals or Toronto to help them out. Otherwise they would clinch at Tampa and not at home.

Pretty crazy, considering that they were pretty bad on Fridays the last couple of years. It seemed every time they played on My9 on Fridays, they would lose. Thursdays didn’t used to be very good days either. Trend was, lose Thursday to either lose the series or miss out on sweep; and then lose on Friday to be in a hole for the weekend series.
