Sorry for the empty post. It said that Varitek is a bum and Tito would be insane to let him catch these next two games or any playoff games. Here’s hoping Tito is off his rocker.
Joba pitched well tonight, which is a good thing because I was ready to green light a trade to SEA for King Felix. I’m not 100% convinced that he’s righted the ship, but if he pitches well in his final start, that would ease my fears.
I would have chosen a photo from Babe’s heyday rather than one from the many poignant moments in Yankees history. It’s supposed to be a happy occasion!

flip though the net, it’s hard finding one of Ruth’s number
100 pitches, seriously at this point I will be surprised if the Yanks don’t sweep. What an amazing turnaround in terms of the teams’ positioning!
Can y’all remember the fear on this forum (of course excluding the forum fearless – OPPC and company!) when beantown had an 8-0 lead in the series. I swear that some people were convinced that the Sux were going to be leading the Yankees to the promised land, and not vice versa.
Would you rather the Yankees sweep the Red Sox, celebrate the clinching of the AL East and give the Sox some ammunition for the ALCS or would you rather Yanks win 2 of 3 and clinch against Kansas on Monday?
Laura – Matsui will be a Yankee in 2010!!

Laura, as yankee fans can we excercise some sort of patience? king felix has 4-5 years of major league pitching experience. This is joba’s first year as a starter. Lets cut him some slack.
This game was really nice to win. Going into it the bad Joba vs Lester didn’t look good but that is why you never know what can happen. Like the good Joba showing up. Hopefully the big man can have a good game tomorrow.
it’s so funny how this morning I was actually concerned that Jobber could be finished. How insane i was! I’m so glad the Yanks are run by professionals and not megalomaniacs like myself!

On the boston broadcast, Dennis Eckersley said he doubts the official news about Leter’s leg, that’s it’s much worse than they’re saying.
=====================================
They did this at the request of Boston’s finest. They didn’t want the 911 circuits to crash.
I don’t see bags of money out there playing.Your players are millionaires too,not working for minimum wage.Get you some business and stay out of the YANKEES!!
What a great game. Big games from Joba and A-Rod, and they ran all over Varitek. Another start like this from Joba and Girardi is going to have to really think about choosing the 4 pitcher format for the ALDS. Joba over the Tiger’s 4th starter is a huge advantage for the Yankees if he can pitch this well.
A man and his dog walk into a bar. The man proclaims, “I’ll bet you a round of drinks that my dog can talk.”
Bartender: “Yeah! Sure … go ahead.”
Man: “What covers a house?”
Dog: “Roof.”
Man: “How does sandpaper feel?”
Dog: “Rough!”
Man: “Who was the greatest baseball player of all time?”
Dog: “Ruth!”
Man: “Pay up. I told you he could talk.”
The bartender, annoyed at this point, throws both of them out the door. Sitting on the sidewalk, the dog looks at the guy and says, “or is the greatest player Mantle?”

interesting tidbit from Francona’s NESN interview –
Hideki Okajima won’t pitch this weekend. He’s been sent back to Boston. He’s going to get acupuncture for a sore side.
===============================================
They might as well have sent him to a witch doctor.
Betsy, I’m just trying to give you lessons in being positive! If you overcorrect, you eventually get to the midpoint. And since that’s your wish, I want to help any way I can.
If there was such a thing as “don’t worry dust” those of us with extra to spare would lovingly sprinkle it around for anyone who wanted it. It’s the one thing I have that I really wish I could somehow zap into others only because if you don’t know the feeling of letting life roll without sweating and actually feeling optimism all the time, you would want the world to share it because it is such a really good and happy way to go. It may sound ridiculous but I am being so sincere. From the first day of the season I never worried about the team and always knew they’d end up on top. That means I didn’t have any angst at all, all season. And look where we are. There is no way you can say that doesn’t beat worrying and obssessing all season because it ended up being needless worry.
I’m not criticizing by any means, just wishing that people could find the way to enjoy and not worry. It’s just better in every possible way. Is all.
“Can you imagine the amount of drama we would have endured this season if Steinbrenner was still alive?”
Oh yeah!
There were times I had wished that the old George was still at the reins, but in retrospect I have to say that Girardi was absolutely the bromide that this team needed. He really worked some magic under very adverse circumstances. One place I believe he made a huge difference was in the way he handled the pen. It is amazing that we are at the end of the season and actually can think of pen as still being pretty fresh. (I do anyway.) That in itself is amazing.
I just switched off Joba’s post-game. It always sounds a bit like a cross-examination, and it’s uncomfortable to listen to. So, I’m no longer going to. Joba pitched great tonight. Whatever was said, however he put those words into action, great result. Now, let’s see next start.
“Trish, that was a lovely description….and I wish I had your attitude.”
Betsy I swear you can get there. I would love to buddy up with you and be your coach and cheerleader! I swear that you were born to take that step. I have always admired your ability to step back and call yourself on it if you feel you have been negative. That is such a great trait. It also means that you are open to go in the other direction. You would be the number one person I would want to share the magic dust with. I mean that.
The Yankees have been better than the Red Sox for most of the year, yet the mediots are non-believers. LOL – I’ve learned not to care about them. A few years ago, the consensus was that the Saints were going to demolish the Bears in the NFC Championship game…………and, well, that’s not what happened. They can blather all they want to…..that said, I still hope the Angels knock the Sox on their keisters.
Damn, Kim Jones was determined to get major info out of Joba. It seems Girardi and his teammates really told Joba he needs to be a man and step up or you might be out. Nice to see Joba put it together tonight.
Aww, Trish – that’s very sweet. I think my negativity comes from me just wanting to prepare for the worst, so that I can’t be disappointed when the worst happens/the best doesn’t happen. I’m either channeling Ben Franklin or I’m like the character in Peanuts, with the cloud over his head, lol
The Globe’s Nick Cafardo today wrote “The Red Sox might very well watch the Yankees celebrate the American League East championship this weekend at Yankee Stadium, but can we all say in unison, “So what?’’
It’s amazing how the Boston media downplays winning the Division. You’d think after watching the team they cover have the best home record in the AL and a putrid below .500 record on the road, they’d be smart enough to acknowledge that home field advantage is crucial to the Red Sox.
The Yankees play in the toughest Division in baseball. If the Red Sox were in the same position the Yankees are in right now, Cafardo’s first paragraph would read totally different. It doesnt matter. The Sox are in serious touble if Lester is injured for the next 2 weeks.
It was an absolute joy watching Jason Varitek’s performance tonight both behind the plate and with a bat in his hands. If you look up the words “washed up” in the dictionary, you’ll find Varitek’s mutt as Example #1.
Fellow Yankee fans, please take a minute to put this in perspective…. how great would it be to win the next two games and beat the Red Sox, in our beautiful new stadium and wrap up the AL East. Who knows, maybe this is the last time we see the Red Sox this year, maybe the Angels step it up and actually don’t embarrass themselves and maybe beat the Sox and the last time we see them is with a hitter walking back to the bench while Mo celebrates (calmly and dignified of course) the final out of the game on Sunday. Wouldn’t that be a treat? Just think of that game in 2004 where they didn’t bunt on Schilling or earlier in the series when they squeezed Rivera vs. Millar before the Roberts steal… all whiped out… all gone…
Really, no matter what happens after that, we really should hope we get the chance to enjoy these next two games!
Drive 4-5, to add to your comments… the Red Sox have only won the AL East 1 time in the past 17 years right? Yes, it’s a big deal, I agree, if the Sox were winning, they’d be celebrating…
“yet the mediots are non-believers. LOL – I’ve learned not to care about them. ”
There ya go Bets!!! I told ya.
“I think my negativity comes from me just wanting to prepare for the worst, so that I can’t be disappointed when the worst happens/the best doesn’t happen. I’m either channeling Ben Franklin or I’m like the character in Peanuts, with the cloud over his head, lol”
Ha ha ha!!! You know, there might be something to that “preparing for the worst” theory. Maybe that’s exactly what you do because you really do move away from the negative mode quickly when you have reason to do so.
I have this sappy kind of team love/team loyalty thing going on so that if things fall apart, I am never devastated by it because I’m always proud of them for trying their best, even when it doesn’t work out. So for me not being prepared for bad outcomes isn’t ever a big deal because I have other things that help me with relatively fast recovery. I’m probably missing relevant brain cells but it still gets me through the night!
jeff – I am all for it! I absolutely want to sweep and do all the things you said. What better way to christen our new home?
Someone asked earlier if we would rather beat Boston or KC for the clinch. He or she had a baseball reason for asking that – I forget what the hook was – but I would much rather beat the Suxers for the clinch, for every reason in the world. I feel bad for KC, though they have been playing very good ball lately. Let them keep their dignity – heck maybe they even take a game from us. I want to tie it up on Sunday.
On top of that, it makes the wild card even dicier if we sweep. Of course Texas has to cooperate. So far so good!
CB, # 4 is the starting & ending when talking about the greatest 1st Basemen in the games history….Sorry Sir Albert, the road to catch Lou is long and the bar is set very very high……I thnk Giradi sends out a deluted lineup tomorrow…Please let A-Rod DH though
Shame on everyone who didn’t have any faith that this team could beat the Red Sox tonight with Joba on the mound against Lester.
Those who do have fiath in this team have been rewarded all season and have certainly enjoyed watching this team play that much more than the naysayers and bridge jumpers.
Trisha, the idea about clinching on Monday against KC was suggested because AJ is pitching and it would give him a psychological boost to win that game. Not sure if I agree with the point, it is the Royals after all.
I have to admit however, I would love if they clinch on Monday because I’ll be at that game! But I think I’ll settle for clinching against the Sox…
FYI, Gio Gonzalez a young lefty is pitching against the Angels. 6 shut out innings so far, he has terrific stuff. If you remember the Yanks couldn’t touch him when they faced him……He was the main player the White Sox traded to Oakland in the Swisher trade. LOL
Aww rb, those are two very good reasons for a Monday clinch. Now I’m torn. I have to admit that there is something about clinching against Boston in our house that feels extremely cathartic. Best I can say is that if for any reason it doesn’t happen Sunday I would definitely want it to happen on Monday.
MattNC
I hope Jim Leyland runs Verlander out there on short rest down the stretch to secure a playoff spot for the Tigers. A one game playoff between the Twins and Tigers would help the Yankees because they would not face Verlander in Game 1.
I’m also torn on the Yanks clinching Sunday because my Dolphins are playing the late afternoon game on the West Coast and I have an older TiVo which doesn’t allow me to watch/record two programs at once like the newer models.
I’d love to see them sweep the series again but I wouldn’t be too upset if they do it Monday night instead.
It’s unreal for all us Friday night tickets planners.
For years we sort of suffered with mediocrity. This season? It was just awesome.
A. 1st win in the new stadium
B. 5 walk-off wins. 6 if you count the weekday game we were forced to buy in April…Melky”s first walk off vs. the A’s. The Gardner inside the parker. The 15 inning game. etc. etc.
Nothing would be better than cliniching infront of the Sox. Let’s just hope the Yanks win one of the next two games otherwise they would need a sweep of the Royals or Toronto to help them out. Otherwise they would clinch at Tampa and not at home.

Pete must really dislike his blog rivals because I’ve tried to post a link twice to their website and it was caught both times in the filter.
N-O_M-A-A-S
Go to that site and check out their front page image right now. I’m not a fan of them but the image made me chuckle.
Pretty crazy, considering that they were pretty bad on Fridays the last couple of years. It seemed every time they played on My9 on Fridays, they would lose. Thursdays didn’t used to be very good days either. Trend was, lose Thursday to either lose the series or miss out on sweep; and then lose on Friday to be in a hole for the weekend series.
Mr. Franco….Wolverines giving away too many points ( 21 ) as for Parcells Dolphins, they could be looking up a big hill to climb if they lose in San Diego & when the Jets win……
YES.
A few shaky moments for the pen, but all in all a good win against Lester (glad that the kid is OK).
Gehrig gets no love.
SWEET!!!!!!
woot woot – let’s get the done!
What a night by Varitek. Nothing makes me quite as happy as watching Captain Facemask fail.
Nice win……
What other picture could you choose? classic!
Gehrig got skipped.
Okay, so that’s not really a bad thing.
A sweep would be so nice, but 2 out of 3 will be okay with me.
Pete you better prepare a nice Picture of Billy Martin for next game!
Perfect picture, Pete!

Yessiir!
By the way, Joba pitched very well tonight. That is a very encouraging sign. I guess he does want to be a postseason starter after all.
Both captains are going to get skipped: Gehrig and Jeter.
Sorry for the empty post. It said that Varitek is a bum and Tito would be insane to let him catch these next two games or any playoff games. Here’s hoping Tito is off his rocker.
Man you talk about an epic picture. Come on Yanks!
When Joba says he only had a few bad pitches tonight, he’d be right.
looks like I’m next in line for a
– I’ll take that!
Varitek is finished. Seriously, he could finish the season with an BA under .200
the best thing about NESN is listening to them cry in the post game.
It’s incredible that the Yankees have a chance to tie the season series after starting 0-8.
Trisha
Very exciting to see those frowns coming up and not down. What a season.
Very glad to see the Babe make an appearance tonight. Hopefully, we’ll see Murcer/Martin tomorrow/
Looks like I’m about to be eliminated pretty soon (tomorrow???) with a 98-win prediction.
Cano!
Gammons wrote a column today. He said that this series was going to be used as a learning tool.
What did the Yankees & Sox learn?
Yankees:
1. You can run
2. You can put up runs
Sox:
1. The Yankees can run
2. The Yankees can put up runs
“Now the Sox probably won’t be here for the clinching. That is too bad.”
With a sweep, Yanks clinch on Sunday!
Joba pitched well tonight, which is a good thing because I was ready to green light a trade to SEA for King Felix. I’m not 100% convinced that he’s righted the ship, but if he pitches well in his final start, that would ease my fears.
Actually I could be putting smiles on the lower numbers and frowns on the higher numbers. What do you think?
Post-game on YES…….thank god.
I would have chosen a photo from Babe’s heyday rather than one from the many poignant moments in Yankees history. It’s supposed to be a happy occasion!

I know, I just figure that will be hard to do. But you never know since the Yanks will face bad pitchers the next 2 days.

“Yankees should have the best record because they have the highest payroll.

Obviously he forgot to take a shot at Jeter and how he is only in it for the money…
Would you rather the Yankees sweep the Red Sox, celebrate the clinching of the AL East and give the Sox some ammunition for the ALCS or would you rather Yanks win 2 of 3 and clinch against Kansas on Monday?
Clap Clap Clap,Joba ruled tonight,won # 9.

The only downside to the game was the math…
Magic number skips Lou Gehrig.
But what a grand picture Pete came up with. Spine tingling.
What a tradition.
And this 2009 team is poised to join that tradition.
They are a systematically better team than the red sox right now.
100 pitches of fun….. absolutely , it bears all the weight from the delivery…..Not good…And if he’s rushed back it gets worse…Think Wang

I mean that.
yes 100, he was hit on his plant leg.

Thank g-d the job rules are officially over.
Thanks Pel!

The hell with the red sox let’s go Yankees!!!
“Jim Rice is in prime whine mode tonight –
Yankees should have the best record because they have the highest payroll.”
Thanks Rice and by the way the red sox should have the second best record BECAUSE THEY HAVE THE SECOND HIGHEST PAYROLL..Just saying….
Are the twins going to win the central…and were the tigers jinxed by being on the cover of SI…

CB, That’s twice Lou was passed by in the past 10 days

Score 3-0 Oak still in top of the 7th
Good one Pat!
But in the end we know there’s no real way to pass the iron horse.
11 straight 1000+ OPS seasons. Unreal.
I know the Sox were tired.
But it was nice to see the Yankees set the tone for the series.
They really did look like they play in two different leagues.
I expect the Sox to come out swinging tomorrow. But there won’t be too much rest for the weary, as it’s an afternoon game.
“I expect the Sox to come out swinging tomorrow. But there won’t be too much rest for the weary, as it’s an afternoon game.”
Sox had their chance to swing tonight.
Tomorrow they get CC. And he’s still got a shot to win 20.
And the yanks get Dice K.
jeff – I am all for it!
Damn, I felt good about tomorrow’s game until I saw it was a FOX game. I hope DiceK brings his usual mediocre stuff.
CB,
I didn’t say anything about them coming out hitting.
The Twins are primed to take the AL Central. Nine games left: 5 versus the lowly Royals, and 4 against the Tigers.
Yankee fans want to see them battle to the final day, and then a 1-game playoff.
The Yankees stay hot on Fridays: 17-7 record.
Mon. 10-8
Tue. 15-8
Wed. 19-5
Thu. 11-7
Fri. 17-7
Sat. 12-12
Sun. 14-9
Shame on everyone who didn’t have any faith that this team could beat the Red Sox tonight with Joba on the mound against Lester.
Those who do have fiath in this team have been rewarded all season and have certainly enjoyed watching this team play that much more than the naysayers and bridge jumpers.
Just getting back from the game… thoughts?
Funk That!!!
Not in our house you’re celebrating!
Leapfrogging Gehrig? I like it. Now let’s leapfrog Jeter and set it up for some Sunday champagne.
And no goggles. Old school red eyes all the way.
LOL
Chapman is officially a FA. Let the bidding wars commence. This should get interesting in a hurry.

Bronx Jeers, I had that very thought this afternoon. Goggles look so ridiculous.
Wonder if Giambi will show up with a bottle of JD?
Aww rb, those are two very good reasons for a Monday clinch. Now I’m torn. I have to admit that there is something about clinching against Boston in our house that feels extremely cathartic. Best I can say is that if for any reason it doesn’t happen Sunday I would definitely want it to happen on Monday.
Oh and John Kruk?
Go schedule an angioplasty you fat piece of garbage.
Yeah, I’m a little amped up.
Big thanks to Pete Abe who took time out of his VERY busy life to help me with my posting woes.
Thanks Pete. I’m pretending you aren’t going anywhere.
Thanks Trisha. But I will be thrilled either way. (But it better happen by Monday.
)

I hope Jim Leyland runs Verlander out there on short rest down the stretch to secure a playoff spot for the Tigers. A one game playoff between the Twins and Tigers would help the Yankees because they would not face Verlander in Game 1.
Bronx Jeers,
I’m jealous! Which did you enjoy more at the game tonight?
1.The Yankees hitting Lester like he pitching batting practice?
2. A Rod’s performance?
3. Jason Varitek humiliating by striking out 3 times, hitting into a double play, allowing 7 stolen bases and a passed ball?
I’m also torn on the Yanks clinching Sunday because my Dolphins are playing the late afternoon game on the West Coast and I have an older TiVo which doesn’t allow me to watch/record two programs at once like the newer models.
I’d love to see them sweep the series again but I wouldn’t be too upset if they do it Monday night instead.
“The Yankees stay hot on Fridays: 17-7 record. ”
And 11-2 at home.
The 15 inning game. etc. etc.
C. Jeter’s record breaking hit.
Sweet sweet win in a sweet sweet season.
Night all.
Bronx Jeers,
Did ya score any playoff tix with your plan? I’ve got tix for Game 1 of the ALDS and Game 2 of the ALCS.

Go to that site and check out their front page image right now. I’m not a fan of them but the image made me chuckle.
Angels shut out thru 8,by Oakland, mind blowing.
Mr. Franco, let’s wrap it up Sunday , it’s on ESPN… Morgan & Miller…..Even though The Jets are on at that time…..

A very tough question!
I guess I’m just glad to see all 3 happen?
“The Twins are primed to take the AL Central. Nine games left: 5 versus the lowly Royals, and 4 against the Tigers.”
You might be right, but when they face the lowly Royals, they get Greinke twice.
If the Yankees win tomorrow then I want them to sweep on Sunday and get it over with.

Yeah, I’ll be more than happy to take the sweep if they can pull it off. But I wouldn’t be too upset if they did it Monday instead.
Football (Dolphins and Michigan) has taken precedence over meaningless September Yankee games the last few weeks.
Guiseppe,
no m_a_as had alot of derogatory things to say about Pete so he banned them.

Bronx Jeers,
Did ya score any playoff tix with your plan? I’ve got tix for Game 1 of the ALDS and Game 2 of the ALCS.

Game 5 ALDS and game 6 ALCS.
Ah,could this day get any better,Angels lose, whoop there is is!
Mr. Franco….Wolverines giving away too many points ( 21 ) as for Parcells Dolphins, they could be looking up a big hill to climb if they lose in San Diego & when the Jets win……
