The sun shines on a celebration
The Yankees have beaten the Red Sox 4-2 to secure the American League East title and the best record in the AL, which brings with it home-field advantage throughout the postseason.
After a gloomy start to the day, the sun broke through the clouds late in the game and there were blue skies over the Stadium for the final inning. The crowd of 47,576 was standing and cheering for the final out.
The Yankees (100-56) won their first division title since 2006 and have 100 wins for the first time since 2004.
They will start pursuit of their 27th world championship on either Oct. 7 or Oct. 8 against either Detroit or Minnesota in the Bronx.
Back later with reaction from the clubhouse. Tell you what, I get the feeling these two teams are going to play again.

HOW SWEET IT IS!!!!!!!
Giants, Jets and Yankees all win.
Yankees win the AL East.
Life is very very good. I can happily go atone for my sins now.
haha.. new hats with tags on. Yay Yankees!!
GO YANKEEEEES!!!!!! Congratulations team, they’ve come a long way!
Yankees back on top of the mountain.
It’s a great feeling to win.
Yankees win!!!
Now ESPN is sucking up. Get off so we can get to the YES postgame
and have 100 wins for the first time since 2004.
Well, hopefully it’ll turn out better this time…
woooooooooo!
Woooo-hooooo!
Let the record reflect that I happily gave dennis the Sox fan the winning parlay this morning:
“I also like the Yankees/NY Giants parlay.”
The Captain’s YES post-game reaction:
(listen to how slow Morgan starts talking and then blows past the conratulations)
Such a great feeling sweeping the Sox and clinching the division in the same moment.
I really hope they do see each other in the ALCS.
DAMN! The link didn’t paste.
Hold on.
I’m so happy… unfortunately I couldn’t watch the game, footballers took over the dorm TV =( but this was a thriller! Nice battle by Pettitte, some TIMELY hitting by Matsui and Teix … the Yankees are all the way back, baby!
Time to stain those new clubhouse rugs
What the?
There’s champagne flowing….get to the locker room!
Good news for Pete, the red sox won’t get past the Angels…early break for him!
The Captain’s ESPN on-field post-game reaction:
http://bit.ly/XQMsr
Last week I was concerned that the Yankees were struggling.5 out of 6 against the Sox and Angels was the answer that I wanted to see.Not only that but they won playoff type games.Team looks VERY good right now.Looking forward to the postseason.
What a wonderful sports day this has been.
Where is AJ and his pie? Maybe he’ll get Joe when he’s on YES……..
quick where’s John Kruk.. he needs to eat some more crow
niiiicccee!!! congratlations yankees & all of us diehard fans!!!
Not sure, but Burnett was either getting ready to drown Waldman in champagne or pie her.

The day was like the season — gloomy to sunny. I know some of you want to see the Sox in the ALCS because we can’t, supposedly, beat the Angles. I say phooey — I don’t care if I do see the Sawx again this season. Of course, Pete wants to; he has every reason to want to. Many more newspapers are sold on the basis of NYY-BOS than any other matchup.
Yankees, Giants, Jets, when is the last time that all three of the New York professional teams won on the same day?
I said 105 wins
AJ may be too drunk to pie anyone, lol
I guess the secret is the Yanks, Giants and Jets have to play their games at the same time !
Kruk’s accusing Jetes and Posada of skipping the celebration bc they didnt appear on the five-second ESPN pan thru the locker room.
Swish looks like he’s thirsty LOL
Thanks Pel! Chea!!!!!! yanks!!!!!!!!!
Pete, if you’re right & they meet again, please accept my apology now for not extending you “greetings & salutations” then.
To NYY Universe: 100 wins, AL EDivChamp, & making 0/8 start vs.Beant’n irrelevant: YESSSSSS!!!

Actually, in his interview, he was happy but, rather subdued. He’s flying out shortly to see his father.
haha swisher shouts out his bleacher creatures
Question for DVR people. How do you record one station while watching another? If I hit the record button on ESPN and then change to YES will ESPN continue to record, or will YES start to record?
Thanks.
Nobody giving Kim a champagne bath. What gives?
GB, oops – I forgot. Poor AJ – I hope all goes well with his father.
Gammons giving Youuuuuse lotsa love on ESPN
Congratulations Yankees and Yankee fans on winning the division and taking the first step toward mission 27
“Question for DVR people. How do you record one station while watching another? If I hit the record button on ESPN and then change to YES will ESPN continue to record, or will YES start to record?”
If you have two tuners you can record one and watch the other. Or record both. If you only have one tuner you can record the show but you can’t change the channel.
“Yankees, Giants, Jets, when is the last time that all three of the New York professional teams won on the same day?”
the Mets won too, but you did say “professional” teams.
BTW – Thank you Brian Cashman! Nice Job.
Haha Mo got Kim!
Mo got her.
* sprays champagne all over *
Wooo-hooo!!! Go Yanks!!!
Pete, so glad you could be around for this – it wouldn’t be right if they hadn’t clinched before you had to leave.
Kim got the champagne treatment.
Tex looked dorky in his goggles, lol
Rivera, of all people, soaks Kim.
Kim doesn’t like the champenge pouring! lol
GB, when was AJ interviewed? Not on YES……….was it on ESPN? Shoot……..
I just went outside and tipped over my lawnmower!
Damn. Not sure how many tuners I have. All I know is that I pushed the record button while it was on ESPN, and now I switched over to YES. I guess I’ll find out eventually.
Did you guys notice how mad Peter Gammons was in the studio ? LOL. He was like if they don’t win the Ws they failed. Ha ! Peter Gammons is pissed.
Kim looks so sexy all wet
There were more than 1000 fans on Yankee board in Taiwan cheering for the win at 5 AM over here. It’s now 5:29 AM and I don’t think I can sleep. Luckily it’s my day off today.
Go all the way Yankees!
Peter Gammons looks like someone punched his puppy in the face

Yeah, Burnett really played a huge role in helping cement the clubhouse personalities. Along with Sabathia and Teixeira, they were huge in that aspect. Swisher basically took over Giambi’s role as “clown” and with the bat. He was, however better in right field that Giambi was at 1st base. Offense has been a push. Best of luck to the Burnett family.
Karl Ravich, only talking about what if arod situations in the playoffs, so annoying
ESPN is already saying that the Yankees have to win and if they don’t it’s Alex’s fault. ESPN is so funny.
“Damn. Not sure how many tuners I have. All I know is that I pushed the record button while it was on ESPN, and now I switched over to YES. I guess I’ll find out eventually.”
Usually you’ll get a warning if you change the channel if whatever you’re doing interrupts your recording, so I think you’ll be fine.

On WCBS radio, Betsy.
“Tell you what, I get the feeling these two teams are going to play again.”
I doubt it.
Angels will win against Sox this year.
hey Anthony Murillo, can you re-post that pic of you and Chien-ming Wang? I wanted to send a link to a Yankee-fan buddy in Taiwan but I forgot to save the link that day.
Jason – thanks!
The only thing that could have made this better IMO, would have been somebody giving Joe G a pie in the face while he was being interviewed.
ESPN is terrible. Trying to put everything on Alex now.
Vitus what’s the address of the Yankee board in TAIWAN?
Great job Yankees!!

SWEET – The Yankee Empire extends world wide!
great day for ny sports fans… couldnt be happier with this team… cant wait for postseason!!!!!
How appropriate that the winning pitcher in the clincher was Pettitte with Rivera closing it out. Jeter was Jeter. Only Posada was missing on the field.
“Angels will win against Sox this year.”
BBF, absolutely agree with you. It almost feels unfair that Pete won’t be covering all of the postseason with and for us. I think Pete’s reporting season will be ending sooner rather than later.
Yeah Baby!!!
Keep all sharp objects away from Peter Gammons.
Why wouldn’t Pete cover the whole post-season? The Globe is still considered a major metropolitan newspaper, and those usually send someone to cover the ALCS and World Series. They should send Pete to New York to cover the team he knows well.
On a side note…Rivera is now tied for the MLB lead in saves. It would be great to see him get the lead after all the whining about his homer numbers earlier this year.
GB7, don’t forget Matsui, the only other remaining member who has a Yankee pennant to his name getting the go ahead 2 out base hit. Matsui’s contributions to this team have been very underrated. He’s gotten a TON of big hits.
anyone else catch jason zillo rip the champagne bottle out of alexs hands right b4 his interview with kim… just thought it was funny
Alex has a lil beard going on….
it seems like alex is getting pretty emotional
Yeah I forgot that aspect. He just might not be covering it the way we would have wanted – as a press member of the winning team.
The best thing Alex can do throughout the playoffs is eat humble pie.
Haven’t posted in a while (years, maybe) but I must say how happy I am to watch this and read everyone’s comments and be part of the yankee fan family. To the playoffs we go!
i think zillo deserves a lot of credit for arods improved more subdued image this season
Dr. Marc Philippon M.V.P. !!
Aww Alex just said “its easy to have 100 RBI when you have 2 guys in front of you who should be MVP”.
Girardi is crying
Joe must really be missing the Marlins at this point. Ya think?
Kim Jones is doing a phenomenal job with interviews. She has really improved over the past few years and should be a mainstay with the broadcast team for many years.
Can Gammons say Red Sox any more than he does ? And this goof is in the HOF ?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luKmSLXukaw
GB, it’s sad that AJ can’t really be a part of the celebration. Hopefully all will go well with his dad and he can get Joe after they win the ALDS
I have to agree that Kim is doing a great job here.
Fondo,
Definitely. And the guys seem to really get along with her and like her.
GB, thanks! HOpefully CBS 880 will have replays of the interviews…
Alex seems different too. It seems like he has finally been humbled. Really matured. He is almost a Jeter-esque interview now.
Kim kept Alex forever…….I kept waiting for her to let him go and celebrate
I pray that Pel will post the Yes audio
Home Field was also clinched today…
Alex isn’t getting hammered by the NY press every day. That’s why.
Nice that they wrapped it up on Pete’s watch!!! Plus Boston to boot!!
hughes porn mustache!!!
Go to: http://www.espn.com and be completely shocked by the Yankee coverage.
Is Hughes mustachioed?
Hideous – Phil, SHAVE that mustache!
hughes moustache hah
Pel,
That’s hilarious. I guess the Lions snapping their losing streak is more exciting HAHAHA! ESPN stinks.
A.J. sporting the zit

Andy and AJ are totally adorable right now. I’m loving this interview

Somebody may have it, Betsy. Try WCBS 880.com, or, whatever their web site is. It might pop up on there.
AWwwwwwwwwwwwwww AJ and Andy. Did the Yankees go on a group trip to the barber? I hope AJ grows his hair out again….anyway, how sweet is Andy with his arm around AJ? Clearly AJ really appreciates the help he’s gotten from Andy………so nice to see.
Since when does girardi wear braces?
Watching Burnett on YES, you can see how much Burnett admires and looks up to Pettitte.
Did you guys hear what AJ said after Kim asked what have you learned from Pettitte?
” Never too old to be dirty”. LOL
What’s that game where you take a magnet and it moves the iron thingies around ? Something with Willie? That’s what Phil’s mustache looks like……
If ESPN were a newspaper, the Yankees story for tomorrow would be buried in the obits.
GB, yep……that was evident in ST. AJ was lockered next to Andy and reports always mentioned how AJ peppered Andy with questions. Also, AJ called Andy after he signed and pressed Andy as to when he was going to sign…….and he didn’t even know Andy, lol
I know exactly what you’re talking about Betsy, I just cant remember what its called.
We got home just in time for the top of the 9th. YEAH!!!!
Congratulations to the NY Yankees – AL EAst Division Champs.
Been watching the YES post-game.
Where’s the pie, Jenn?????
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....=290927123
Sorry but the timing just made me smile.
wonder if torre calls jeter
Doreen, there won’t be any pie tonight………..
The 2009 World Series goes through Yankee Stadium. I like that.
teixeira “alex is one of the greatest players of all time”
ETCH-A-SKETCH!
Keep Girardi no matter how the post-season ends. Anyone second that?
Trish, that’s not it…..though I love etch-a-sketch. No, you actually take this wand and move it over these iron bits and you can make a weird haircut or whatever……Phil’s new growth looks like someone started that game and left before finishing it, lol
You’re right. etch-a-sketch is the one where you pull the paper and the drawing disappears.
Girardi stays ABSOLUTELY.
WOOLY WILLY!
That would be “Wooly Willy”, Betsy. Doreen and I had fun bringing that old toy in conversation a while back.
Kat – thats it!
You extend girardi 2 seasons past the 2010 season
not the time or place to talk about who stays or goes.. enjoy the now and leave that talk for the offseason.
Wolf -
I remember that!!!
Betsy – Why no pie of Girardi, though? If not now, when?
(It’s okay, I was hoping – it would have been neat – well, sloppy, but neat-o!)
For the record, I didn’t believe for a minute that Girardi was going to lose his job if the Yankees didn’t make the postseason. Yankee organization isn’t as flighty as Yankee fans are.

that brings up an interesting thought. Were Yankee fans as impatient as they are now prior to the Steinbrenner era? Any old timers want to chime in here? I go back to the late seventies where Yankee fan impatiences seemingly fed off of Big Stein’s short fuse.
The Club with the best record in the American League will have the right to decide whether it will play in the seven-day or eight-day Division Series (i.e., whether it will start its Division Series on Wednesday, Oct. 7 or Thursday, Oct. 8). The A.L. Club with the best record will make its selection no later than one hour following the completion of any game that finalizes which club will have the best record in the Championship Season or finalizes the matchups in the Division Series, whichever is later.
dOES THAT MEAN TONIGHT?

Wow. Texas pen coughed it up huh?
Too bad. I would have liked the Sox to take that ride home knowing they gained nothing this weekend.
Peter Gammons is so mad. Seeing him upset is funny. I hope ad pray that the Yankees win it all so that he will really be upset. Especially if the Yankees get to the World Series and win it by beating Boston in the ALCS.
new post
“… or finalizes the matchups in the Division Series, whichever is later.
dOES THAT MEAN TONIGHT? ”
That answers the question right there. They have till after it is decided if the Twinkies or the Tiggers are in for their division.
Michael Hurley writer for nesn.com,writes the article,~Yankees sweep red sawx to clinch division and homefield, makes this quote.~
“It’s only fitting that,Mark Teixiera, the man who appeared destined for the red sawx in the offseason, was the difference maker in the season series finale, allowing the Yankees to even the series at 9 games apiece.”
They hate not getting Tex,awh!
LOL at David Cone referring to OYS as the ex-wife looking over the shoulders (of NYS)
“Tell you what, I get the feeling these two teams are going to play again.”
Too bad you’ll be writing about the Red Sox if and when they do.
Your writing today inclines me to believe you’re going to miss this job. Probably a lot more than you may realize at present.
People…just remember the last time the Yanks won the division and you all counted your chickens. Listen to your heroes and stop making silly predictions about the Red Sox and #27. Karma is a beeyootch.
