Hey, what is Verducci doing writing for SI behind my back?
He is supposed to be helping me write my book. Joe Torre recommended him.

Verducci recommends that highly respected and all around talented truth seeker, Selena Roberts. You’ll have to locate her though. Nobody’s heard from her since the middle of April.
Great picture… with the frieze restored in the new Stadium, this has that classic look we saw on so many baseball cards and yearbook photos of the ’50s, ’60s and early ’70s.
I’m looking forward to reading Verducci’s article. Joe Posnanski wrote a glowing article on SI.com a few months ago when Rivera reached 500 saves.
Mariano will be fine. Michael Jordan was on the cover of Sports Illustrated more times than anyone in history. Tiger Woods is just behind him. I think they turned out okay.

A very happy birthday to Shelley Duncan, who turns 30 today! Maybe Joe can give him the nod today.
Chad has been fantastic covering the SWB Yankees. Very knowledgeable and is well versed in the minor league system. This will be helpful as over the next couple of years there will be an influx of minor league players onto the big club.
Best of luck to both Pete and Chad.
“Wow, Shelley is 30!?! He needs to go to some needy team before he spends his life in AAA.”
As a six year minor leaguer, I believe he could have become a minor league free agent. I think he could have opted out of SWB and the Yankees organzation. He’s not really good enough to have a regular MLB job. Could be a bat off the bench on a lesser team, I suppose.
“Verducci recommends that highly respected and all around talented truth seeker, Selena Roberts. You’ll have to locate her though. Nobody’s heard from her since the middle of April.”
I heard she found her way into a celebrity gated community, but then couldn’t get out.
She was heard screaming – “but I’m not a nanny, let me go. I’m a famous author, and I’ve sold hundreds of books!”
I think the SI cover jinx has been transferred permanently to the Madden video games. The latest cover boy injury is Troy Polamalu. As long as they don’t branch into baseball, I think we are fine.
Last I heard Pete was checking his schedule to see whether he will have time and would get back to Erica. I’ve missed some posts over the past few days and haven’t seen anything more.
The Tigers are a really bad team. They have to be the worse with RISP and situational hitting. The funny thing is that they are sticking with this pitcher Lyon than there crappy closer Rodney.

Any idea where we would have it if hes able to meet up?
With Morneau out, neither team has more than 1 player who can beat you.
I would imagine in the playoffs you pitch very, very carefully to Mauer or Cabrera and let someone else try to step up.
“Any idea where we would have it if hes able to meet up?”
No, I don’t think it’s gotten that far. A few people suggested we have a party right when Pete announced he would be leaving. Erica emailed Pete, who said he would let her know if he would have time to do it. I haven’t heard anything since then.

Sounds like Pete hasn’t gotten back to you. I think that partying should be higher on his list of priorities.
Pete’s True Priorities:
1. Partying with LoHud Bloggers
2. Everything else
Watching these other AL playoff contenders try to finish games off with their bullpens is the Yankees equivalent of watching Marte and Bruney as the 8th and 9th inning guys. Even Nathan has been a bit of a roller coaster lately.
Doesn’t matter to me who wins the Central – the Yankees are a better team than both the Twins and the Tigers. If they don’t beat whomever prevails, it would be a gigantic disappointment.
“Joe Mauer, the alleged MVP, is 0-4 in this big game.”
Twins were 7 games out after play on 9/6. Since, they are 14-6 and a game back. Mauer is hitting .383 with a couple homers and 14 rbi and a 1.100+ OPS during that stretch.

True, Christina. And we could invite Sam, Josh and Chad.
Congratulations to Chad Jennings. Welcome and good luck trying to keep this motley crew in line! I enjoyed reading your SWB coverage.
Seems many of us had the same reaction about Mo’s cover. I’d like to think Mo is so far beyond such trivialities.
But what a fantastic picture.
Had XM baseball on in the car this morning. Broadcaster from the Angels was talking about the umpiring at Fenway. Then he said it’s the same at Yankee Stadium. That the umpires are human and are (can be) swayed by the feelings of the crowd and seemingly by certain players. He used Derek Jeter as an example, saying that when Jeter turns around to question a call on an inside pitch, “of course” the umpire is influenced. I don’t know how to react to statements like these. This guy said he thinks the umpires are right 98% of the time, with the exception of at Fenway or YS. What????
For what it’s worth, I do agree that umpires get a majority of calls right, and for the most part do a very good job. However, on the whole this season, there’s been a lot of bad calls, and they haven’t been isolated to Boston games or NY games, either. Whatever!!
Then I flip to Mike F and I hear a caller trying to give Girardi credit for not burning out his bullpen, and Francesa sounds exacerbated and/or bored and not very impressed at all, saying of course he didn’t burn out his bullpen, HE HAD NO PRESSURE. Again, what??!!!
And then he was going on about how the Mets shouldn’t deal their core players. I suppose his reasoning was sound, because he said they’d be selling low, but wasn’t he the bandleader for “break up the core,” last season.
All this because I couldn’t find any music I wanted to listen to for 40 minutes! Ay ay ay.
The great thing about Tigers/Twins is that the way it is shaking out is whoever wins is possibly not going to be able to set up for us in the playoffs(Verlander in Gm. 1 etc)
Geez, Michael Kay makes it sound like the Yankees would have no shot against the Tigers and would have a cakewalk against the Twins. The Twinkies may have no name pitchers ,but they are obviously getting the job done……
I thought that the supposed ‘SI Cover Jinx’ only fell on the guys who made the pre-season covers.
Pete: A very busy day & evening for me today and I won’t have time to sign on later, so I probably won’t see anymore of your posts in ‘real time’. Good luck to you up in Boston, I’m sure you’ll have a great time.
Pitching matchups tomorrow and Thursday would seem to favor the Twins, so 3 out of 4 if they lose to Verlander tonight is still a possibility (this is all speculation, as John Sterling has taught us all that you just can not predict baseball).
It’s crazy how big of an edge (10-5) Minnesota has in the head-to-head season series against the Tigers. If it ends up a tie, is that the ultimate tiebreaker? Or do they just play a one-game playoff to decide the division?
I am pretty sure you had said that today is your last day, and this is probably my last chance to post today, so thank you for what you have done in creating this blog. It has helped me to stay in touch with the Yankees and the general feeling of back home in NY.
There are so many pseudo-fans down here that you can’t seriously talk Yankees with them. People like Dick Vitale, who always preached Yankees, then acted like he was a lifelong Rays fan last year. Now they are back to the Yankees and have forgotten the Rays. There is no point in talking baseball with them. Anyway, thank you and good luck in your new endeavor!
if verlander wins tonight, then tigers up 2.
even if they split next two games of the series, they’re up 2.
then they have 3 with chisox. this could come down to friday night games. if twins lose and tigers win friday night, then tigers (wuth 3 game lead) can back off the last two games and rest verlander for Game 1.
this could potentially be verlander’s last start before Game 1 against NYY.
Mauer is hitting .383 with a couple homers and 14 rbi and a 1.100+ OPS during that stretch.
Ignoring the HRs, this prorates out to 112 RBI for the season. What is your problem? The Twins playing at .500 cannot be pinned solely on Mauer – in fact, without him, they would probably be not close at all
It is indeed the rare occasion that I even listen to Francesa at all, much less in the car. But I made the mistake of tuning him out once only to go back. Sigh.
Poor Mets. I can’t laugh. Except – when it comes to Omar, but then he has 9 lives, doesn’t he? No way he should be back next season. NO way.
In the month of August when the Yankees put away the AL East by going 21-7, including 5 of 6 from the Red Sox, Derek Jeter hit .377 with 6 HR, 17 RBI, 27 Runs and a .977 OPS. That’s from the leadoff position.
That people think Mauer is a no brainer pick for MVP is a joke.
“Geez, Michael Kay makes it sound like the Yankees would have no shot against the Tigers and would have a cakewalk against the Twins. The Twinkies may have no name pitchers ,but they are obviously getting the job done”
I think either team would be a cakewalk, but the Tigers are more dangerous because of Verlander. Twins pitchers can handle a below average offensive club like the Tigers (and White Sox, and Royals, and Tribe) who are low OBP, free swinging teams. Against a patient Yankees team? Forget about it!
Kay is off. Just because the Tigers have power pitchers doesn’t mean they will pitch well. I mean those are the exact type of pitchers that the Yankees hit well.
Soft tossers they struggle with. And he’s putting a lot of stock in Jackson and Porcello (who’s a rookie). They’re as much as a question mark as Burnett is imo.
I don’t care who they get. You play who play. Both teams are subpar. Shaky pens and closers. Neither lineup really scares me. Just pitch around Granderson and Cabrera. and Mauer.
“In the month of August when the Yankees put away the AL East by going 21-7, including 5 of 6 from the Red Sox, Derek Jeter hit .377 with 6 HR, 17 RBI, 27 Runs and a .977 OPS. That’s from the leadoff position.”
Excellent point. Mauer sucked in August. He only hit .391 with 8 homers and 23 rbi. He was so bad in fact, his OPS nearly went below 1.100 for the month.
If the Yankees play as they’ve played almost all season, and if they don’t have one of those “everybody implodes” days, they can beat anyone.
I did hear today, thought that there is a chance that Sciosa will put Santana in the bullpen for the playoffs. That could be an interesting development, since their bullpen is not their strength, but putting a strikeout guy out there could help.
“I did hear today, thought that there is a chance that Sciosa will put Santana in the bullpen for the playoffs.”
Interesting. Weaver has had an achy back and Kazmir is notorious for needing outs from the pen. When on, Santana is very tough and could be an interesting guy in that role.

joeysdad –
if verlander wins tonight, then tigers up 2.
even if they split next two games of the series, they’re up 2.
True ….and Verlander IS great BUT that is 2 ifs.If Det loses tonight it’s tied and Verlander has to go again to try and hold off Minny.
“While Grienke is a tough draw for Minny,No way Ozzie Guillen lays down for Det.He HATES Magglio Ordonez and would love to keep him out of the PS.”
You are forgetting one thing. Ozzie doesn’t play the game; he just manages. He’s already accused his team of not giving their all several times this year. Who knows? Maybe they bag the games just to piss him off. He most certainly deserves it after the way he throws them under the bus after each loss.
you’re right joeysdad – verlander’s start tonight is critical – if he loses, then he won’t pitch Game 1 of an ALDS. If he wins, then there’s a chance he has a chance to rest in time for Game 1.
“I remember Santanta coming in to fill in for Colon when he got hurt during the playoffs. He shut us down competely.”
5 1/3 IP, 3 earned runs allowed. Wasn’t totally lock down, but he pitched effectively and for most of six innings. He was spotted a 5-0 lead and did his job getting the game to the late innings with the lead. Back then the Halos did have the pen that could handle the finish…and sadly, they did.
Mariano Rivera is the reason why I became not just a Yankees fan, but a fan of baseball.. period! I also can’t wait to frame this SI cover and include it in my “shrine” to MO!.. (the centerpiece being an autographed ball from him)
“In the month of August when the Yankees put away the AL East by going 21-7, including 5 of 6 from the Red Sox, Derek Jeter hit .377 with 6 HR, 17 RBI, 27 Runs and a .977 OPS. That’s from the leadoff position.”

Mariano Rivera is the ultimate closer, jinx sminx, that jinx crap is BS! It’s the Yanks time again, now if this was football and it was a Madden cover it would be a different story, lol.
Wow. The SI curse thing is oveblown to some extent but this is a little strange. Why would SI do this now instead of the million other weeks they could have featured him (and I’m sure they have other times but you know what I mean). Not a conspiracy theorist but I think the instincts of the commenters here should not beignored. Interesting.
Strange timing, yeah… but I think we all know that if Mo gets beaten in the playoffs, it won’t be because of the SI cover.
Jinx-talk aside, I think it’s a really great, intense picture. I’ll definitely be buying this and hanging it in my dorm room with all my other Yankees stuff… =)
- you only have to hit home to get to the top of the screen (unless you’re on some wacky browser)
- i’m pretty sure they sold ‘wild card’ caps for the Yankees in 2007. this is nothing new. (but terrible from a marketing standpoint… who buys those and is proud??)
- to buy on the drive home: soap, vinegar (2 kinds), a bottle of that acai juice that keeps me healthy.
- great job Sam. looking forward to reading you!
- there was something else, i wanted to say. maybe i’ll remember and post from home later…

The Tigers are a really bad team. They have to be the worse with RISP and situational hitting. The funny thing is that they are sticking with this pitcher Lyon than there crappy closer Rodney.

And the Twinkies take the lead.
Not impressed with either team and especially not with their bullpens. Huge advantage in the Yankees favor.
Joe Mauer, the alleged MVP, is 0-4 in this big game.

Christina,
Last I heard Pete was checking his schedule to see whether he will have time and would get back to Erica. I’ve missed some posts over the past few days and haven’t seen anything more.

LMAO – if you do bring a tape recorder, I bet she talks about Arod in her sleep.
With Morneau out, neither team has more than 1 player who can beat you.
I would imagine in the playoffs you pitch very, very carefully to Mauer or Cabrera and let someone else try to step up.
“Any idea where we would have it if hes able to meet up?”
I read somewhere that Stiletto and Lace had a Happy Hour. Can’t remember where though.
“Any idea where we would have it if hes able to meet up?”
No, I don’t think it’s gotten that far. A few people suggested we have a party right when Pete announced he would be leaving. Erica emailed Pete, who said he would let her know if he would have time to do it. I haven’t heard anything since then.
Does anybody else know anything more?

Granderson making it interesting
Granderson leads off the bottom of the inning with a homerun off Nathan to cut the lead to 3-2.
I know it now. We are very, very spoiled with our bullpen. Can’t imagine having this angst with anyone else but Mo or Phil
lol Francesa right now.
Joe Nathan win
Tigers lead is down to 1 game in the Central.
Nathan shuts it out. Tigers with a 1 game lead now.
Twins win Game 1
Win tonight & it gets VERRRRy interesting
This outcome should increase the likelihood of Verlander having to pitch on Sunday in an important game.
wow.tough matchup in the nightcap though.
if the twins beat verlander tonight then I see momentum carrying them to the Central championship.

great point andrew.
If Twins take 3 of 4, they’re tied with 3 games to go.
Twins vs. KC (& Greinke)
DET vs. CHI
Down to the wire???

Uncle E-
I already have a postseason roster for you. Why are you resubmitting??? Are you trying to confuse me???
“This outcome should increase the likelihood of Verlander having to pitch on Sunday in an important game.”
If the Twins win tonight, it’s close to a lock. If Verlander wins, advantage Tigers on day. No ground lost, two games chipped off the schedule.
2 homers and 14 RBI in a 20 game stretch is pretty pedestrian for a guy hitting 3rd and is an MVP candidate. Tex gets close to that in a good week.
7 games out on 9/6? All those pretty numbers Mauer put up were really meaningful for a team hovering around .500 most of the year.
If you want to be MVP, perform in the big games when it matters. So far he’s 0-4 in the biggest series of the year.
Ed-
Add the Big G and Shelley Duncan to the list also.
Ay ay ay.

This is my new submission.
If you allow ok if not that’s ok too.
I watched the Joe Gi show last night and read between his lines.
The great thing about Tigers/Twins is that the way it is shaking out is whoever wins is possibly not going to be able to set up for us in the playoffs(Verlander in Gm. 1 etc)
Still, Sports Illustrated ?
Mo should be on the cover of Time, Life (doest that still exist?) Rolling Stone, National Geographic, Women’s Wear Daily etc.
Why would the Yankees allow this? It’s a well known jinx
Geez, Michael Kay makes it sound like the Yankees would have no shot against the Tigers and would have a cakewalk against the Twins. The Twinkies may have no name pitchers ,but they are obviously getting the job done……
“the Yankees are a better team than both the Twins and the Tigers.”
Combined.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
While Grienke is a tough draw for Minny,No way Ozzie Guillen lays down for Det.He HATES Magglio Ordonez and would love to keep him out of the PS.
Pete,
I am pretty sure you had said that today is your last day, and this is probably my last chance to post today, so thank you for what you have done in creating this blog.
Anyway, thank you and good luck in your new endeavor!
joeysdad –
if verlander wins tonight, then tigers up 2.
even if they split next two games of the series, they’re up 2.
then they have 3 with chisox. this could come down to friday night games. if twins lose and tigers win friday night, then tigers (wuth 3 game lead) can back off the last two games and rest verlander for Game 1.
this could potentially be verlander’s last start before Game 1 against NYY.
Doreen
I would think listening to Francessa while driving could give a person a case of road rage.
Someone told him they bought 2 tickets to a Mets game on Stub Hub for a dollar each.
Mike said he wouldn’t be suprised to get one for free right now.
andrew – one game playoff.
best record against the other determines home field for that game
if I had the time i’d go check out Citi field – get some shake shack
Not that I talk to Dick Vitale, but he is typical of the “fans” down here!
When is ete’s last day?
Mauer is hitting .383 with a couple homers and 14 rbi and a 1.100+ OPS during that stretch.
Ignoring the HRs, this prorates out to 112 RBI for the season. What is your problem? The Twins playing at .500 cannot be pinned solely on Mauer – in fact, without him, they would probably be not close at all
Maine Yankee -
It is indeed the rare occasion that I even listen to Francesa at all, much less in the car.

“Someone told him they bought 2 tickets to a Mets game on Stub Hub for a dollar each.”
People should be careful. They could be counterfeit.
There are a lot of fake George Washington’s floating around out there….
Hopefully the ones that vote for MVP don’t use results from one game to make their choice.
Just pitch around Granderson and Cabrera. and Mauer.
Wouldn’t it make more sense for tomorrow to be Pete’s last day, since its the last home game?

Excellent point. Mauer sucked in August. He only hit .391 with 8 homers and 23 rbi. He was so bad in fact, his OPS nearly went below 1.100 for the month.
If the Yankees play as they’ve played almost all season, and if they don’t have one of those “everybody implodes” days, they can beat anyone.
I did hear today, thought that there is a chance that Sciosa will put Santana in the bullpen for the playoffs. That could be an interesting development, since their bullpen is not their strength, but putting a strikeout guy out there could help.

Interesting. Weaver has had an achy back and Kazmir is notorious for needing outs from the pen. When on, Santana is very tough and could be an interesting guy in that role.

even if they split next two games of the series, they’re up 2.
““I did hear today, thought that there is a chance that Sciosa will put Santana in the bullpen for the playoffs.””
I remember Santanta coming in to fill in for Colon when he got hurt during the playoffs. He shut us down competely.
That is one sweet cover.
Mariano is the main reason that the Yankees have been so successful since 1996. I will definately buy and frame that magazine.

Jeez, whatever happened to a picture speaking for itself? That cover is a cluttered disaster. I miss covers like this:

- you only have to hit home to get to the top of the screen (unless you’re on some wacky browser)
- i’m pretty sure they sold ‘wild card’ caps for the Yankees in 2007. this is nothing new. (but terrible from a marketing standpoint… who buys those and is proud??)
- to buy on the drive home: soap, vinegar (2 kinds), a bottle of that acai juice that keeps me healthy.
- great job Sam. looking forward to reading you!
- there was something else, i wanted to say. maybe i’ll remember and post from home later…
