Repost, sorry, but I would love to know the answer to the question.

    _______

“we know the questions and those are open to discussion.
i say watch what’s going on and learn something.”
Randy I is on target here. You have two pretty good catchers in Girardi and Pena calling the shots here. They know the situation and will figure out the best plan of attack.

On another topic, and I’m sure this has been asked and answered before, but why doesn’t YES have a “K-Zone” or something like it? Its not like they can’t afford it, and with the quality of pitching the NYYs have now, I would really like to see how good CC, AJ etc all are.

Backbench, I have wondered the same thing. I think even
    SNY has something like that.

  5. Abdababdaserser September 30th, 2009 at 12:46 pm

Backbench, why give the opposition an additional tool they might be able to use to scout the Yankee pitchers?

Seriously, it does seem odd they don’t have a K zone in their broadcasts, but then again, in most of the other stations when they have them they rarely show the replay on the ones I want to see.

Just a word of unsolicited advice:

What set this blog apart from others wasn’t Pete’s insight or sense of humor (as valuable as those things were). What made it different was Pete’s work ethic–his willingness and ability to keep this blob updated with information throughout the day.

There are countless places where people can go to get opinions about the Yankees–this has been the place where people can reliably get practical information. I

f you want to debate the post-season roster there’s no shortage of outlets, but if it’s 3 pm on a Tuesday and you’re wondering if Johnny Damon will be in the line-up, or if there’s a chance of a rain delay, or if the Yankees have announced next week’s ceremonial first-pitch throwers, this page has been your best bet. Hope that continues.

Derek Jeter needs to earn my trust back.

He told a reporter he took the DiMaggio sign from the Stadium. Now we find out last night he didn’t.

What else has he been less than honest about?

this whole AJ/Posad/Molina thing has been so blown out of proportion it has crossed into the ‘ridiculous’ zone.

The Yankees have a manager who caught in the majors for over 10 years. Their bench coach was as good a receiver as any you will ever see. They know what they are doing and it doesn’t matter what a single fan thinks. If Molina catches AJ in his last start on Sunday it will be a sign that he will catch him in the playoffs but, given the difference in the offensive skills, don’t you think AJ would rather have Jorge behind the plate since he knows it gives him a better chance to get a win? AJ hasn’t exactly gotten great run support recently and at least some of it has to be because removing Jorge from the middle of the lineup hurts and having Molina, who is in a terrible slump and can’t run, at the bottom of the lineup just really detracts from the offense.

The problem with this blog very often is that so many of you want to play manager you don’t take the time to understand how a game or team is managed by a professional who has all the information needed to make the right decision. Maybe if you would watch a little more and complain a little less when something is done that doesn’t match your opinion you might start seeing more of the playing field than the on-deck circle.

    Sam,

Welcome aboard. Pete taught you well. His favorite hot topic was Alex.

    Doreen-Batteries are recharged now!

pat-that funny comment had a nasty comment about Pedroia that hinted at a past tragedy involving one of his own kids, I had to edit it out. But who spells “corps” wrong? Or “insight” for that matter? :)

-murphydog-my favorite part of the YES broadcasts is listening to the guys tell stories about and rag on the guys who aren’t in the booth on that day. They all do it, and I love it.

-L to the 2nd, is the coping mechanism working?

-As for Posada, why is no one questioning the fact that he hasn’t been catching lately? Was TBS correct? Lat issue? I know he needs his rest, but this is more than rest imo.

-As for AJ/Molina/Posada? It’s all about the curveball.

-Remember how the Dodgers were supposed to clinch in July? They still haven’t clinched the division yet.

  19. upstate kate September 30th, 2009 at 1:10 pm

maybe they will show it on tonight’s pre game

  20. Doreen September 30th, 2009 at 1:12 pm

    m -

Wow – that was quick!

m, I read that Posada’s problem was a “trap” muscle (trapezius, perhaps?), not the lat, for what it’s worth.

And speaking of ragging on guys who are not in the booth, did Al Leiter really get a degree over the internet? I was sorta believing Michael Kay, thinking maybe not a 4-year degree, but maybe finishing out a degree, but the he said something about his wanting to be a real estate broker if he was out of a job in baseball, and that just sounded weird.

  21. Doreen September 30th, 2009 at 1:12 pm

Unless he told the front office to trade CC and Lee, made Carmona a stiff, also traded Martinez and hit Sizemore’s elbow with a tire iron so it needed surgery I would say he got a raw deal.

    Agreed.

  27. betsy September 30th, 2009 at 1:19 pm

Ditmars, I would have preferred that Sam not even raise the AJ/Molina/Posada issue because we all have our opinions and they aren’t going to change. All that happened is that we rehashed what we already discussed months ago. I agree it’s boring…….but threads move quickly and sometimes people want to comment on topics that may have already been discussed.

Ding Dong, if Joe does that, I would be shocked….and I would also have certain feelings that I would prefer not to express here.

  29. m September 30th, 2009 at 1:20 pm

    Doreen,

Yes! That’s an example of the groundbreaking analysis we get from the YES booth. I know it’s trivial, but baseball games can be long and tedious. The best guys capture your interest. But Flash sounded totally surprised. Was it Penn State?

Technically the Phillies haven’t clinched either, Atlanta’s on a little run. 18 of the last 20 or something wild like that. They hurt their cause last night as Colorado recovered from blowing a 5-2 game in the 9th, and Atlanta couldn’t quite do the same. Lost by 1 to the Marlins. Texas, too for that matter. They had chances at the division and wild card.

Thanks for the clarification. Explains why Posada’s been out and didn’t even pinch hit late last night.

  30. betsy September 30th, 2009 at 1:21 pm

Agreed about Wedge….although I will say that it always seems the Indians are a disappointment. The reason why the Tribe traded CC, Lee and Martinez was because the team wasn’t performing. If they were, they would have remained Indians. Wedge needs to get some blame for that….

  31. m September 30th, 2009 at 1:23 pm

Sam bringing it up an issue isn’t a problem. The problem arises when people can’t address each other respectfully about the issue.

I’ll sneak over there after he gets settled. I hope he won’t mind a little moral support from a Yankee fan.

  37. Doreen September 30th, 2009 at 1:29 pm

    betsy -

I think it ends up being really complicated. CC, Lee and Martinez are guys a team should keep to build around. CC might have been traded mainly because they wanted to be able to get something for him because they couldn’t afford to sign him as a free agent, probably. Or, it might be as you say, and since the team wasn’t performing, they traded the guys for whom they would get the most in return.

On the radio, they were talking about economics. Not being able to keep players if you’re a small market team.

But they also marvelled how only two seasons ago, the Indians were a game away from going to the WS. How did they go downhill so fast?

Seems to me they threw in the wrong towels? But how does a guy go from being a manager of the year to today’s garbage?

And shouldn’t their boy genius Shapiro shoulder some responsibility here, too?

At the Bowl Game press conference today, Hal said Girardi is, “the man for the job” but it’s premature to talk about extending his contract.

He also said Hank and George would be at the World Series “if and when we make it.”

  44. Rex September 30th, 2009 at 1:41 pm

“So what does anyone think about Eric Wedge and his coaches being fired effective the end of the season?”
Heard on the radio this was done against Shapiro’s will.

Tough call. He’ll finish 7 years there, which is actually a pretty good run in this day and age. Think Wedge has to catch some flack for a miserable 1st half of ’08, after narrowly missing the World Series the year before. That putrid start led to Sabathia being sent to Milwaukee. Even this year, he had enough bullets in the gun to compete within the rather weak division and it simply did not happen. Malaise may have set in and once that happens, it’s all over.

  45. Jim P September 30th, 2009 at 1:44 pm

Isnt is nice how the Blue Jays actually put up effort against the Red Sox, when the games meant nothing.

Done solely to mask their lack of effort from their previous 15 matchups.

At least the Orioles did not get to play a meaningless game against the Sox this year, so they could win that one to mask their lack of effort. 2-16 record speaks volumes.

  46. randy l. September 30th, 2009 at 1:45 pm

“You have two pretty good catchers in Girardi and Pena calling the shots here. They know the situation and will figure out the best plan of attack.”

    backbench-

this plan of attack could change each game. girardi and pena are trying things and after they make a decision for one game , they may see things and get results that make them adjust and make a different decision for the next game.

not for a second do i think that posada has any major defensive problem. during the regular season molina has to catch someone to give posada a breather and also to keep molina sharp as a back up.

AJ is as good as anyone for him to catch. it makes sense to have the back up go with one guy more because it’s a regular way of getting him in there every five days or so.

the playoffs are a different situation. i really have no idea what girardi will decide in the first playoff game, but i think he’ll go with posada because posada doesn’t need rest at this point unless he’s banged up.

if giradi does have molina catch, i’m pretty sure it’s not because he doesn’t like posada’s catching skills in relation to molina’s. it would be because of a sore neck or that he thought burnett is just used to him.

burnett being used to posada doesn’t necessarily mean anything bad about posada. as i said molina has to catch someone . he’s caught burnett a lot, so he ‘s used to him. period.

this is something that is a part of the play off picture and i think a legitimate discussion.

in my opinion the discussion goes off the rails when someone tries to say posada sucks as a signal caller and as an overall defensive catcher because that just isn’t true.

if someone takes a decision by girardi to put molina in a game with burnett to be a diss on posada i think they they are not understanding the decision made by girardi.

if this happens ,and molina is paired with burnett, i think the more likely reason is just as i said that burnett is simply used to him .

with burnett being a hard guy to catch, maybe you want the guy who’s caught him more.

but girardi is the one who’ll make this call and i’m sure he’ll be giving it his full attention.

i’m really not worried about it at all.

it’s all about girardi figuring out how to make this team tick to get the best out of everyone.

  47. Fran (the original) and OPPC member September 30th, 2009 at 1:45 pm

I am not surprised that Wedge was fired. But I don’t understand why the Indians couldn’t just wait until Sunday to do it.

  48. haiku-man September 30th, 2009 at 1:46 pm

With Wedge leaving,Red Slops pitching coach,John Ferrell is speculated to get the nod.
http://www.boston.com Extra Bases blog(Pete’s new home) has the story.

Ferrell’s leaving will be a brutal blow to the Red Slops.

  49. NYYROC September 30th, 2009 at 1:48 pm

Ferrell has a clause in his contract that he can’t leave to manage a team before 2011. Was mentioned during last week’s NYY/ RS games.

  50. Carl September 30th, 2009 at 1:51 pm

    NYYROC

I’m sure the Indians can pay the Sox to release him out of his contract, that’s assuming he wants the job.

  51. haiku-man September 30th, 2009 at 1:54 pm

Do you really think the Slops will hold him back?
Who wants a disgruntled employee around, that feels cheated out of an opportunity.

  52. Rex September 30th, 2009 at 1:56 pm

“Ferrell has a clause in his contract that he can’t leave to manage a team before 2011. Was mentioned during last week’s NYY/ RS games.”

I’d guess they’d let him out of that if he really wanted to go. I thought I read somewhere that Farrell is one of the three highest paid coaches in MLB, so it seems Boston takes care of him. He can probably afford to cherry pick his next gig to some degree and an organization that has sold off three of its stars and finished with the 2nd worst team ERA in baseball with no real promising hurlers in sight in the minors, is probably not all that appealing. He was in the Tribe organization for awhile, so we’ll see. He’s already turned down the chance to interview for a couple jobs in the past.

“Ditmars, I would have preferred that Sam not even raise the AJ/Molina/Posada issue because we all have our opinions and they aren’t going to change. All that happened is that we rehashed what we already discussed months ago.”

    betsy-

sam would be neglecting the obvious if he didn’t write about who is going to catch burnett.

    it’s a legitimate baseball question.

what got old for me personally was listening to really uninformed ideas opinions people who knew almost nothing about catching going on ad nauseum about how bad posada was.

this was the issue that was annoying.i didn’t hear sam say anything bad about posada.

simply debating molina catching burnett because he’s caught him more is a different discussion.

  56. Rex September 30th, 2009 at 2:05 pm

“On the radio, they were talking about economics. Not being able to keep players if you’re a small market team.”

That’s definitely part of it, but if the Tribe came out with both guns blazing in ’08 and competed, they’d have kept Sabathia thru ’08. Same applies to Martinez/Lee this year. No doubt economics played a role, but Wedge couldn’t bring the team back from the disappointment of ’07′s near miss.

I just figured out why Eric Wedge got canned today and not on Monday of next week.

Because the Indians were saving that weasel of a bum Wedge for the Sox series in case the Red Sox needed a victory to clinch.

Once the Sox clinched last night, they had no need for Wedge. To think, he could have had a job for 5 more days if the Red Sox needed a win.

  66. Tom in N.J. September 30th, 2009 at 2:12 pm

Martinez has another year on his contract.

What is killing the Indians is the wasted money on their roster. Hafner makes another 37 million through ’12. Jake Westbrook made 10 million this year and 11mill next season. Kerry Wood makes 11 million next season.

They had a 90 million dollar payroll/budget this this season. Over one third of that went to players who gave them very little, if any, production.

  70. L to the 2nd September 30th, 2009 at 2:17 pm

The issue with midmarket teams like CLE is that their window for success is usually pretty small – Wedge had his in ’07 & you see what happened after that.

Is Shapiro gonna fire himself now too?

  71. Rex September 30th, 2009 at 2:19 pm

    Tom:

Martinez AND Lee both had team options for 2010.

You’re right, some unfortunate deals led to them having to move some pretty good ones. Hard not to lay a lot of this on Shapiro, but once again, he was against firing Wedge and the coaches. That mandate came from ownership.

    maine yankee-

    hey, it’s something.

guess you weren’t a natural catcher or maybe you just were too smart for the tools of ignorance

    —————————————————

Kinda hard to be a catcher when you close your eyes each time the hitter swung.

“Remember how the Dodgers were supposed to clinch in July? They still haven’t clinched the division yet.”

    :) :) :) :) :)

Mel, remember when Joe Girardi was supposed to be fired (according to some fans and press members) if he didn’t deliver a postseason? – not that I think for a minute he would have been, by the way! Well I guess the engineering major from Northwestern University showed that he really knew how to deliver the goods! And the manager of the cakewalk division is still waiting.

Even though last night wasn’t a “must” win, it was nice to have one last walkoff for Pete’s last day, and AJ didn’t get pinned for the L because of Coke’s multiple brainlocks.

Now, tonight’s a “must” win, right?

Erica, is it too late to change my guess to 105 wins?

    *****

That’s Trisha’s contest. Not mine. You’d have to ask her

And tonight is absolutely a must win game

You never know with Joba, but after going 90ish last week, I’d think he’d be back to the standard 100 at this point

“Now that THAT’s taken care of, did Pete ever discuss that “nuke” button with you before he left Sam?”

not many people know this, but i’m pretty sure sam traded jim pir-one to red nation for a fan to be named later , but it’s being hush hush while the details are being worked out.

What about “skip the posts if you don’t like the topic” eludes some of you? Do you think maybe it’s a little pompous for some of you to decide a topic doesn’t need any more discussion? How about this? Things may have changed since a topic was last “overdiscussed”. Or they may not have.

There have been days here when I have been bored to tears by some of the topics, including the Joba to the pen debate. You never saw me once come on and tell people it was time to stop posting about it.

JMO. I think people need to back off and if you don’t like a topic, skip it. Or try bringing up another.

So Trisha, too late to change my prediction to 105?

I’ll accept multiple asterisks, of course.

  87. betsy September 30th, 2009 at 2:42 pm

Randy, I didn’t mean to knock Sam – it’s just that I knew we would be going over old territory here. Posada gets a lot of blame here and on Yankee boards and I think it’s unwarranted. As I said before, a pitcher’s success or failure in a particular game is on the pitcher, not the catcher. Jorge has been behind the plate for multiple WS – and so, IMO, he’s absolutely good enough to catch everyone on this staff. AJ had a bad stretch – Molina wasn’t going to be able to fix him, only AJ could do that.

Doreen, I can understand trading CC because he was not going to re-sign, but trading Lee and Martinez (who were still under contract)…..man, I don’t envy fans of teams who have to dump their players strictly because of $$$ issues. I still think the Indians could have kept them and used those guys to build around, but maybe the team felt like they needed to completely start over…

  88. randy l. September 30th, 2009 at 2:43 pm

“And the manager of the cakewalk division is still waiting.”

    and what’s he waiting for?

oh yeah, another playoff spot to continue his streak since 1996. can any other manager say the same?

i like having girardi as the yankee, but it doesn’t diminish was torre has done as a manager.

this whole game of trying to put people up against each other when there’s no conflict between them gets old .

    girardi is a good manager.

    torre is a good manager.

they are both where they should be.

personally ,what i’d like to see is them meeting in the world series.
now that would be pure baseball theatre.

“I still think the Indians could have kept them and used those guys to build around, but maybe the team felt like they needed to completely start over…”

Not really. Keep in mind that in 2010, Lee and Martinez will be what Sabathia was last year. One season from their 1st shot at free agency. Can’t build around guys who will be gone in a year’s time.

NYY over DET in 4 PHI over COL in 4
LAA over BOS in 5 STL over LAD in 4

NYY over LAA in 6 STL over PHI in 6

    NYY over STL in 6

Ok, I’ve seen a few people ask about Posada why he hasn’t been catching. Here is the link. Read the tidbits. He has a stiff neck from the Toronto brawl. I’m sure a week off from catching will do him a world a good.

“didn’t mean to knock Sam – it’s just that I knew we would be going over old territory here.”

    betsy-

i didn’t think you meant to knock sam and you didn’t, but i also think the playoffs are not old territory.

they’re coming up this next week.

this is going to be discussed, and i think it should be.

i’m looking forward to the debate and discussion.

girardi is going to make a decision and there’s going to be a game won and a game lost.

why wouldn’t his decision be discussed by sam and other journalists?

i wasn’t involved much in the old springtime debate that started with cervelli if i remember right because i thought that one was just too many women who didn’t take advantage of Title IX and didn’t have a clue what they were talking about.

Scroll down to the 9 thread Bls entrance exam:New York Yankees dated,Tues Sept 29,2009

    -Here’s a teaser

It warns teams that to dismiss the 2009 Yankees’ success as just the result of financial excess, and wild free spending ways of the Sreinbrenner family,is to ignore the accomplishments of a select group of hard working individuals.

This team is not simply a loose-knit group of mercenaries showing up for business each day and collecting a pay check…..please read the rest,it’s refreshing.
