TBS announces broadcast lineup for ALDS

Posted by: Sam Borden - Posted in Misc on Oct 01, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Even though the Yankees still don’t know who they’re playing, TBS has announced that its top broadcast team of Chip Caray and Ron Darling will be covering the Yankees/AL Central divisional series.

To be honest, I don’t have a strong opinion one way or the other on Caray, though I recall not being particularly impressed with him a few years ago when TBS had the Yankees/Indians series. Darling, on the other hand, is terrific and I’ve always found him to have the right mix of serious analysis and wit. I think you guys will enjoy him.

Check out this quote from Darling on A.J. Burnett, who came up on a media conference call TBS had with some of its broadcasters: “When he’s on, he’s unhittable. He has a slider that when he throws it where he wants, no one can hit it. The key for him is, he’s kind of an excitable boy. Sometimes that works in his advantage, sometimes I think it works against him. Getting in charge of his emotion will be key. He’s brought a lot of levity to that team. The Yankees were always a team that seemed more like IBM than Apple.”

Burnett throws a curve, not a slider, as his putout pitch

  2. Ed - 2009 will be the year of the Yanks October 1st, 2009 at 7:36 pm

“When he’s on, he’s unhittable. He has a slider that when he throws it where he wants, no one can hit it”

hmm Darling is sadly mistaken, Burnett throws a curveball not a slider.

“The Yankees were always a team that seemed more like IBM than Apple.”

or more like…the Yankees were always a team that seemed more like reddi-wip than cool whip.

I love Ron Darling as an announcer. He and Gary Cohen are a good team during the Mets broadcasts. Darling started slow and unsure of himself, but he’s really grown into the job and he shines.

  5. m October 1st, 2009 at 7:38 pm

TBS called it a slurve in the last broadcast.

I like Darling. Of course he has good roots and comes from good people. :)

  6. Doreen October 1st, 2009 at 7:42 pm

Interesting. They’re replaying the 1st game of 1969 WS – which the Mets lost. When they do WS games on YES, do they ever show the losing games?

  7. vin October 1st, 2009 at 7:43 pm

According to AJ himself, he throws “a heater” and “a hook.” I don’t think I’ve ever heard him use the words “fastball” or “curveball.”

I’ve been really happy with AJ’s durability (knocks on wood) this season. If he can stay healthy then there is no reason the Yanks can’t be WS contenders for the next 4 years.

Recently, there’s been more talk about how he has been throwing more changeups. If he can show that pitch and keep his mechanics in tact for the other two pitches, then he’s unstoppable.

  8. Vader October 1st, 2009 at 7:43 pm

Doreen…maybe they are running the entire series?

  9. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Montero Fanaticus Primus October 1st, 2009 at 7:43 pm

I like Darling, but I can’t stand Caray.

  10. Rich in NJ October 1st, 2009 at 7:44 pm

According to PitchFx, AJ almost never throws a slider.

  11. Mike October 1st, 2009 at 7:46 pm

Chip Caray is the worst. I remember that entire 2007 ALDS and how every game he would be more than happy to say crap like “CLEVELAND ROCKS” or whatever.

  12. Betsy October 1st, 2009 at 7:46 pm

SJ (or was it CB, I think CB) once said (in response to an article I posted from John Harper, who talked about a nasty slider AJ threw in ST) that AJ’s curve when right is up there with the best pitches in the game. I remember this very, very well. He said that AJ’s curve doesn’t just break up and down, it breaks sideways also, like a slider, and that’s why many people confuse the pitch.

I’ve not really ever listened to Darling because I hate the Mets…….He makes good points about AJ. I think assuming his mechanics are in order that AJ will pitch well in the post-season because he truly wants the spotlight. He said it over and over again in ST ; also, it still burns him up that he was on the sidelines in 2003 when the Marlins won it all.

  13. Doreen October 1st, 2009 at 7:47 pm

    Vader

Maybe over the course of the week, but not tonight.

if they’re doing that, wouldn’t it make more sense to do it starting on October 11th, which is the date they’re showing for game 1.

  14. Newbie October 1st, 2009 at 7:48 pm

    MLB.TV will carry this, right?

  15. vin October 1st, 2009 at 7:48 pm

I read Darling’s book earlier this year. Pretty interesting read. He broke the book down into 9 chapters, and he told a story about a pivotal inning of his life and how it has affected him personally. For example, in chapter 3 he wrote about the 3rd inning of a game that impacted his life. Good stuff.

The development of a young pitcher can be torturous at times…….and it’s harder to do in NY, where there is an imperative to win. Developing young pitchers and winning as a team just do not go hand in hand……….It’s an almost impossible balance to strike.

Joba is going to be very good IF he gets his head out of his behind during the off-season and keeps himself in shape. He’s only 23 – as I said about Phil more than once, talent just does not disappear. If Joba wants to succeed, he will………..As to his mechanics (which people feel were tweaked, with bad results), I don’t know. I am a believer in going with what feels most natural. Although I think Joba’s natural motion may not be conducive to long term success (too much on the arm, not enough leg), maybe it’s just better to get as much as you can out of him and let him do what he feels comfortable with. I do not feel that strongly about it, though. I have no problem with the Yankees trying to tweak his mechanics to make his delivery sounder.

I will say that I am nervous about how the Yankees will deal with Phil’s innings limits next year. I do not relish him going through what Joba went through; I say just start him in the minors and bring him up when appropriate

  17. Betsy October 1st, 2009 at 7:50 pm

AJ has been healthy as a horse this year, just like last year. In fact, this year, he’s not had so much as an ache or a pain. Whatever he is doing between starts and in the off-season, it’s working.

  18. vin October 1st, 2009 at 7:51 pm

    Betsy,

    I recall that too.

AJ really throws two types of curveballs. A slower, looping cb, and a hard biting one that looks like a slider. He usually gets ahead with the slower one, and the harder one is his put away pitch. His stuff is remarkable.

  19. Ed H. October 1st, 2009 at 7:52 pm

    Reposted from last thread:

I read that today is the 48th (!!) anniversary of Roger Maris hitting his 61st homer, breaking Ruth’s record. I’m still impressed by what an awesome accomplishment that was, especially with all that Roger put up with while chasing the Babe. It seemed like the press, the fans and the commishioner were all against him.

It’s also amazing that nobody since Maris has accomplished the feat without the aid of chemical enhancements. I’m one of those quasi-geriatric old fogies who still view Maris as being the legitimate single season HR champ. A tip of the hat and a toast to good old Rog.

“The Yankees were always a team that seemed more like IBM than Apple.”

    Fantastic quote.

  21. Vader October 1st, 2009 at 7:54 pm

Doreen…just throwing it out there, but you are right YES only seems to replay Yankee victories…maybe that is why they call them Yankees Classics.

  22. MikeBoston October 1st, 2009 at 7:55 pm

Betsy, what is ST in reference to?

  23. Rich in NJ October 1st, 2009 at 7:55 pm

I think Darling’s quote about AJ maintaining his focus and equilibrium is spot on.

  24. zgveritas October 1st, 2009 at 7:59 pm

Lester perfect through 3 in Cleveland.

    1-7 Groundout-Flyout.

    Watch him lose.

  25. Alan October 1st, 2009 at 8:01 pm

ANYTHING beats the broadcasts of ESPN and Fox.

  26. adsfadsfadsgad October 1st, 2009 at 8:01 pm

cant respect him if he thinks a.j. throws a friggin slider. it just happens 2 appear as such because it’s so good. it is thrown with such velocity (83 m.p.h.) and has downward as well as left-to-right break, but is clearly, and i mean CLEARLY a spike curveball

  27. Betsy October 1st, 2009 at 8:02 pm

    MikeBoston, sorry – Spring Training.

Well, the Yankees are the new 2004 Red Sox I guess, without the long hair and idiotic behavior, lol. This is most fun team I’ve had the pleasure to follow – and I get warm fuzzies thinking about how everyone really cares about each other.. AJ said his phone blew up with all the calls he got from his teammates, concerned about his father….I also remember AJ saying in ST that this could very well be (by then, it was already apparent this club had major chemistry) the most fun any of them would ever have……….He seemed exhausted on his post-game show the other day just talking about the 15 pies he’s thrown this year, lol

  28. Abdababdaserser October 1st, 2009 at 8:02 pm

Darling is fine. He does a good job and has the background that helps to add some color to the banter.

  29. Rose October 1st, 2009 at 8:03 pm

Don’t like Carey, he is boring.
Darling will be great. He is excellent on Met games. Very bright guy.

  30. MikeBoston October 1st, 2009 at 8:05 pm

“I will say that I am nervous about how the Yankees will deal with Phil’s innings limits next year. I do not relish him going through what Joba went through; I say just start him in the minors and bring him up when appropriate”

Unless Hughes is rehabbing he will never so much sniff the minors again, you can book that. His arm is way to valuable to waste down there. As long as they follow the “Joba” protocol he will only be allowed to throw about 40 more innings next year than this year. Right now he’s at 85 innings. Hopefully he gets another 15 or so innings this post season than you’re looking at 100, which would leave him for 140 next year.
My guess would be they limit his innings early as a starter and ease him into a full workload by July.

  31. Betsy October 1st, 2009 at 8:05 pm

lol AJ was topic du jour today:

  32. m October 1st, 2009 at 8:06 pm

I like Darling because his voice is so relaxing. And he’s a positive commentator. He has his little jokes, about the bandbox and what not. But I’ve never heard the snide remarks that you get from some of the other people.

  33. zgveritas October 1st, 2009 at 8:08 pm

    Lester no-no finished.

  34. Betsy October 1st, 2009 at 8:09 pm

Mike, you could be right……just as long as they don’t do what they did with Joba this year.

Hmm, I’m glad Lester’s healthy, but I’m sorry he’s pitching well.

  35. MikeBoston October 1st, 2009 at 8:10 pm

Thanks Betsy, I should have gotten ST on my own!

I’ve never listened to Darling but I remember Caray annoying the hell out of me in 07. It also could have been the results of those games ;)

  36. Andrew GTLU Bronze Medalist October 1st, 2009 at 8:10 pm

They still have not finalized game times yet, though, have they? I have tickets to Game 2 on Friday the 9th, since it’s a Friday I am just assuming it will be in primetime. But, you never know.

  37. MikeBoston October 1st, 2009 at 8:18 pm

Yikes, pardon the poor grammar, I need to resubmit this one after re-reading:

  39. Winfield killed my seagull October 1st, 2009 at 8:21 pm

so true about Darling. So easy to listen to, and very positive. Why can’t ESPN get someone like him? I really don’t know who is worse; Joe Morgan or Tim McCarver. And Steve Phillips isn’t much better.

  40. Winfield killed my seagull October 1st, 2009 at 8:22 pm

Will they have Phil play in Arizona this fall to increase his innings by say 20 -30?

  41. jennifer October 1st, 2009 at 8:23 pm

Someone on twitter said Swisher is going to be on Regis and Kelly, has anyone else heard this.

  42. Betsy October 1st, 2009 at 8:26 pm

Winfield, I don’t think Phil is eligible for the AFL……..but maybe he’ll pitch in the winter league.

  43. MikeBoston October 1st, 2009 at 8:32 pm

“Will they have Phil play in Arizona this fall to increase his innings by say 20 -30?”

Someone else chime in but I highly doubt the brass would send him there after the season. If you look at his innings he had 72 in 07 and only 34 last year. He’s already going to be pushing it this year so rest after the season would seem to be the call. They usually reserve that for guys with barely any MLB service, but I could be wrong. With his innings though Arizona ball is a moot point for him.
Jesus Montero, he’s someone I could see playing there this fall.

  44. jonnycat October 1st, 2009 at 8:32 pm

so it seems apparent that SJhas left the blog….did he make an announcement? Any ideas wby so quickly…. PS- save the SJ is Pete jokes

  45. OldYanksFan October 1st, 2009 at 8:33 pm

I don’t like the way Joba was handled, but not only did we lose Wang for the year, but didn’t really know it for 5 or so weeks. I don’t think the Yankees are really happy about how they handled Joba, it’s just one of those we-have-to-win-this-year things that had them between a rock and a hard place. In any event, I believe they will handle Phil better next year.

  46. vin October 1st, 2009 at 8:35 pm

Hughes isn’t eligible for AZ fall league. The consensus here is that the Yanks will thank him for a job well done, and tell him to show up ready to start in ST.

  47. Betsy October 1st, 2009 at 8:37 pm

Mike, I’m thinking that the Yankees want Phil to work on his change. That lack of development was an unfortunate byproduct of him being in the pen for most of the year………..Maybe they think he can work on it in ST, but the pitch doesn’t come naturally to him and I would think he’d need more time.

  48. jennifer October 1st, 2009 at 8:37 pm

I noticed as well. No SJ and CB.

  50. Betsy October 1st, 2009 at 8:38 pm

I assume SJ (and CB also) left because they felt the blog was going downhill. It’s too bad – they didn’t even post after the Yankees clinched……..I miss their contributions.

  51. Ryan October 1st, 2009 at 8:38 pm

I can just remember repeatedly in ’07, Carry claim that the “Winning” run was on base in the 8th inning against the Indians when he obviously meant the go-ahead run. He also kept using the letter high fastball expression with strikes at the waist. For example : ” aaaaannnd Lee throws a letter high fastball for a strike”. Nothing but contradictions come out of that mans mouth, his analysis was horrible.

I’m watching the whole series on mute with Sterling on the radio. I dont care if its out of sync, its better Carry.

  52. Betsy October 1st, 2009 at 8:41 pm

What? SJ and CB have lives outside this blog? I don’t believe it.

  53. MikeBoston October 1st, 2009 at 8:44 pm

Betsy, I totally agree that they want him working on that 3rd pitch, but not at the expense of missing any MLB innings. He will be told to figure it out in ST and I’m sure he will.

  54. Bronx Jeers October 1st, 2009 at 8:47 pm

I thought I saw an SJ post on Pete’s last night.

Haven’t seen much of either lately though.

We’ll see next week if they show for the ALDS.

Darling is good. Chip is a puker.

  56. XLJ October 1st, 2009 at 8:55 pm

Burnett throws a knuckle curve. If Darling keeps calling it a slider during the game it will be a very long and tough listen.

And Chip Caray is a moron

  57. William Buckner October 1st, 2009 at 8:56 pm

Get ready folks. Lopez Tonight has replaced Frank TV as TBS annoying over hyped show.

    Very funny.

  58. John October 1st, 2009 at 8:57 pm

Chip was pretty terrible in the 2007 series, his call of the Johnny Damon homer in Game 3 sounded like an even worse version of a Joe Buck home run call. Hopefully he steps it up this year.

  59. jonnycat October 1st, 2009 at 8:58 pm

    You people are still hilarious.

I dont care if Burnett calls it a pink polka dot dress. Its a slider. Its thrown hard and it breaks sharply. That is a slider, folks.

Get a clue. Ron Darling knows a little more about pitching than, well, some idiot on a message board. No offense, nitwits.

  62. Pat M. October 1st, 2009 at 9:10 pm

Carey & Buck’s family tree’s go back to the Cardinals, as both of their fathers were announcers in St. Louis……Apparently the NY Yankees were not a favorable topic at the dinner table in those days as well as today……The big bad Bronx Bombers

You’d probably know best about pink polka dot dresses….probably yellow ones, too. Nobody throws sliders that hard that break in two directions, and, since Burnett says that’s what he’s throwing, I’d tend to go along with him. I

GB, You remember the nickle curve, much like the slider with less tilt and break…I swear that had to be the second pitch that I waived at during my AB in Clearwater…The 3rd and last pitch was still extremely hard but broke down and in……Even if I had an oar, it was no contest….All three pitches came from the same slot, all had different movement…..Nickle curve is what I was told he threw me on pitch # 2…..

  69. Pat M. October 1st, 2009 at 9:29 pm

I failed to mentioned the pitcher…..Steve Carlton

  70. smile for the camera October 1st, 2009 at 9:36 pm

Actually, Chip Caray is decent. He’s not terrible at all. I usually watch on MLB.tv, but I watched last Friday’s game against the Red Sox on TBS and Caray was one of the announcers along with Buck Martinez. Chip was up to date on all things Yankees and I did not consider him biased one bit. And trust me I am pretty critical about announcers. I don’t even like most of the ones YES employs. Flaherty is awful, Cone is the best.

  71. sb October 1st, 2009 at 9:36 pm

i prefer joe buck and fox for everything, im disappointed tbs gets all the games in the first round…i know about 75% of the population will disagree with me about buck

is the consensus that we will choose the wed start/longer series?

  72. Drive 4-5 October 1st, 2009 at 9:37 pm

Since TBS is assigning their top broadcast team to the Yankee series, I wonder if that means Wednesday’s game will be on prime time. I have to make travel arrangements to attend the game and I’m anxious to find out lol.

  73. smile for the camera October 1st, 2009 at 9:39 pm

On the other hand, Joe Buck is a walking piece of crap and shouldn’t be allowed a hundred miles from any Yankee game. Him and McCarver quite possibly form the worst, most annoying, biased announcing duo in all of baseball. Them and both the Rangers broadcasters (and actually one of those guys does some work for Fox as well-big surprise)

  74. Carl October 1st, 2009 at 9:41 pm

    JOSE VERAS

  75. MikeBoston October 1st, 2009 at 9:43 pm

Chip Carey was brutal back in the ALDS vs. The Indians….I thought there was another Carey floating around ??

I was hoping TBS would hire Sterling and Waldman for the Yankee series.

  78. #23 Hitman October 1st, 2009 at 9:54 pm

Definately remember the nickle curve. It was the orginal slider until guys like Lyle and Carlton found new ways to embarrass the hitters. Carlton, Lyle and Guidry are what slider pitchers aspire to be like. Those are the three gold mark standards. Three other pitchers that threw curves like Burnett…Ryan, Score and Feller. Never saw Feller other that on film. Koufax had those two curves…one was a harder version of Blyleven’s and the other was very down and away…or into right handers. Gibson had one, too, but, not quite that big a break….more of a true slider.

  82. Ken October 1st, 2009 at 10:59 pm

Chip Carey is going to make it unlistenable. And I cant stand the Sterling/Waldman fiasco on the radio ( Can the Yankees ever hire a decent radio crew? Geez)…so Im going to have to watch with no sound.

  83. Corey October 1st, 2009 at 11:00 pm

  87. Yeah October 2nd, 2009 at 3:29 am

I’m not a big fan of either Chip Caray or Ron Darling (incidentally, the quote from Darling above is all boilerplate, no insight). But they’re better than Joe Schmuck and Dim McCarver.

  88. Nick October 2nd, 2009 at 8:06 am

Can’t stand Caray. Not only do I find his voice grating (especially when he whipped out “CLEVELAND ROCKS” every two minutes in ’07), but he continuously makes factual errors throughout the broadcast. Notable mess ups I remember from the 2007 ALDS:

    - saying the Yankees “led the world in home runs.” They were actually tied for 4th in MLB. (which was further annoying because TBS was trying to spin an Indians underdog story throughout the entire series, when, of course, the Indians had the better record that year and won their division)
    - calling a go ahead run in the 8th inning a “winning run”
    - saying Derek Jeter had played in 40 or so playoff games (the actual amount is more like 3x that)

Sure, in the grand scheme of the broadcast, maybe errors like this aren’t a big deal, but if your broadcaster isn’t taking the time to check his facts, and, more egregiously, not correcting them later, then the guy isn’t doing his job. I’ll take Buck/McCarver.

More importantly does this mean Ron SIeger and is crazy outfits are doing the sideline reporting?

I like Chip Carey. He shows alot of emotion for both sides. His Southern drawl is pretty refreshing. Some of you think every broadcaster outside NY is anti-Yankee. Cmon!. Just think, if Yanks make it to ALCS, then we get the famous Buck-MaCarver duo.

Without having read through all the other comment, MY feeling is that a Broadcats with Carey/Darling is a thousand times better than an Anti-Yankee Broadcast team of Buck/McCarver!!!

Sometimes I’ll actually put on the radio and listen to the Yankees broadcaster’s while the game is on and mute the TV. It doesn’t always line up perfectly, but solves the problem of my not liking particular announcers(esp. ESPN).

Chip Carey is adequate & Ron Darling is good. Sadly the World Series will be on FOX. Joe Buck is awful, he’d be shoveling manure if not for nepotism. Tim Mc Carver was irrelevant
20 years ago, now he is insufferable. All that crap, noise & robots on FOX is just a nightmare.

    Ron is such a Darling.

The thing I HATE about the playoffs and the World Series is that you have people doing the broadcasts who know little to nothing about the teams involved. I don’t care who they are – you also find it during the season with the FOX broadcasts and especially with the ESPN broadcasts.

does anyone know what start times our ALDS games are being given? im making my first trip to the new stadium next weekend from boston for friday’s game, and anything earlier than a 4pm start could make it difficult.i assume that with the angels having home field advantage, at least how things stand now, the yanks will be on at 7, giving a 10pm start to the angels at home.
