Joba Chamberlain pitched poorly as the Yankees lost their regular-season home finale to the Royals. Chamberlain’s role in the Yankees postseason plans is up in the air.

The Yankees are off today but have no fear – I’ll check in with a few posts throughout the day to keep you from getting any work done.

So the new Yankee Stadium with it’s 237 homers isn’t the launching pad like Coor’s Field with their 303 homers hit in 1999.

I think 22 more homeruns were hit this season at the new stadium compared to the homer record at the old stadium. Not surprising since we got more power hitters like Tex and Swisher on the team and Cano has learned to drive the ball more along with Damon. Looking at the 2004 roster and this year’s roster the homer totals isn’t surprising.

You kno who i want to see in this tampa seires? IPK of course

GF, I’m sorry – I guess I don’t understand why anyone who thinks Joba can’t be trusted in the playoffs is a bandwagoner who is giving up on him. Joba’s future has nothing to do with his present. The fact that you have faith in him in the post-season is great – no one is trashing you for your opinion. I don’t know why it’s a problem that other people do not have the same faith you do, especially when, IMO, it is unwarranted. Those giving up on Joba for his career are foolish, but we are talking THIS year only and Joba has done nothing THIS year to indicate he’s going to help this team.

As to Phil, I continue to believe that he was injured before he was officially diagnosed with the rib injury – or, at least, that he was feeling the effects of same. It’s one thing not to pitch well, but is FB command was WAY off – to the point people were wondering what was wrong with him. IMO, the rib injury would explain it. Of course I have no proof, but then there is no proof the other way either.

And yet the ESPN/FOX guys continue to get their digs in about the new YS being a launching pad…and of course about how expensive the seats are…

  5. Betsy October 1st, 2009 at 8:22 am

M, I disagree strongly with you that starting Phil, then putting him in the pen, is the right way to go. In fact, I think it would be a terrible move. We want the kid to be ready to go for the post-season – the Yankees can’t bounce him from the rotation to the pen to the rotation (where he’d have to return to, to stretch out). Phil should start in the minors and then come up to stay for good. This year, with Joba, has proven to be fairly disastrous and it would be foolish to put Phil through that.

Phil has to be careful if he goes to that Athlete’s performance place again. He got a lot bigger (wider) and stronger, but I don’t think it’s a good idea if he gets too big…..

I am for leaving Joba off the Division series roster and then including him on the ALCS.

Too much at stake in the first round to let ego or self-esteem take precedence over fielding the best performers at this point in the season.

That said, I think they should have Joba come out of the pen this weekend once or twice to see what his velocity and control are like.

    able21 -

I thought I heard Joe Girardi say in his post-game last night that Joba would not be coming out of the pen in the next 3 games because he threw too many pitches last night. I was half asleep, so I could be wrong. Anyone else hear him say that? He also talked about the fact that when Joba is pitching from the stretch he is taking too much time. Sounds like something that can be worked on, no?

  8. jennifer October 1st, 2009 at 8:34 am

Joba no longer has the excuse that the Yankees were “jerking” him around with the length in between starts etc. He has been pitching for almost a month now every 5 days. It was time for him to step up and he failed miserably against the lowly Royals. How can you trust him in a big spot in the playoffs right now? What has he shown you outside of those 3 outstanding outings after the asb? Yes I know that we’ve won 20 of his games. But to me it wasn’t because of him. It was in spite of him.

Question was anyone listening to those two buffoons on wfan? They said they had some exclusive news on Alex. I had to leave to go to work, so I missed it. I’m sure it was a bunch of nonsense. But anyone know what it was?

  9. Rex October 1st, 2009 at 8:35 am

“GF, I’m sorry – I guess I don’t understand why anyone who thinks Joba can’t be trusted in the playoffs is a bandwagoner who is giving up on him. Joba’s future has nothing to do with his present.”

Agree Betsy. His potential lends to the possibility of an exceedingly bright future, but right now he’s offering the team very little beyond heartburn.

  10. jennifer October 1st, 2009 at 8:36 am

Doreen- Didn’t watch the postgame, but that is what the paper said as well.

  11. Doreen October 1st, 2009 at 8:37 am

    Thanks, Jennifer.

  12. able 21 October 1st, 2009 at 8:38 am

Doreen – I didn’t hear one way or the other about Joba out of the pen. The too many pitches thing sounds sort of lame. if he is that fragile, all the more reason not to take Joba into the postseason.

But the thing about taking too long in the stretch could surely be worked on and, if they are even considering using him in relief, they should.

  13. Mark in Tampa October 1st, 2009 at 8:38 am

If Joba was to pitch out of the pen, the best case would be on Sunday, and that would be on 3 days rest, so I don’t think it is going to happen. As far as taking too much time out of the stretch, that and his other issues have been problems all year long, so to think the would get fixed now is probably a little unrealistic. I think they need to put Joba on the Robi Cano offseason plan.

  14. Trevor (Super Mario) October 1st, 2009 at 8:41 am

Looks like we get the Tigers. No doubt in my mind Verlander will pitch well. Jackson & Porcello are question marks.

  15. jennifer October 1st, 2009 at 8:44 am

trevor- I’m still hoping that the twins at least make it a little interesting. I’m not going to wish for one team over another. But at least force the tigers to fight tooth and nail to make the ps.

The buzz on A-Rod is that his gf, Hudson may be pregnant.

  17. Doreen October 1st, 2009 at 8:46 am

    Mark -

To clarify my statement – I didn’t mean to infer that they could fix Joba’s pace out of the stretch now. I meant it’s something solid to work on going forward. :)

  18. Fran (the original) and OPPC member October 1st, 2009 at 8:48 am

    Doreen,

I watched the post game and Girardi did indeed say Joba will not pitch out of the pen this weekend because he threw too many pitches. He also was non-commital when asked if Joba would be on the roster for the ALDS. His answer was that they would be discussing the roster. Of course if they leave Joba off the roster he could always stay in the clubhouse and “fold towels”.

  19. upstate kate October 1st, 2009 at 8:48 am

Girardi did say in the post game that Joba had to many pitches to be used out of the bullpen in the next 3 games.

  20. Rex October 1st, 2009 at 8:48 am

“Looks like we get the Tigers. No doubt in my mind Verlander will pitch well. Jackson & Porcello are question marks”

Agreed, though I have to say Porcello has shown tremendous poise for a kid who’s still 3 months from his 21st birthday. 3-1 with a 3.22 ERA in 6 September starts and a really nice effort the other day against the Twins (6 1/3, 1 run) in legit crunch time.

    —————————-

irony of ironies is that I heard Joe Morgan say on an ESPN game that the expensive tickets thing was blown way out of proportion and that it was just the few rows around the field. He also informed Steve Phillips (who was complaining about the obstructed view bleacher seats) that those seats are very affordable and allow you to walk all over the stadium so it really is a good deal.

he can go with 1,he can leave gaudin off

  23. Ed H. October 1st, 2009 at 9:01 am

I think that our prodigal cild (Joba) has to go on the shelf for the post season. The playoffs are about results, not potential. It’s not the time for tinkering with a pitcher’s delivery, hoping that this will work to give you a predictably positive outcome.

If we didn’t have bullpen guys who have been successful it could be worth giving Joba a shot in the bullpen in October. To leave a Bruney or a Robertson off the roster though to take a shot with Joba just doesn’t make sense.

  24. Mark in Tampa October 1st, 2009 at 9:03 am

    Doreen,

I know, but it’s just that every time they fix one thing for Joba(shaking off pitches, etc), something else comes up.

One thing that stood out for me last night was the Tug Hulett AB in the 1st inning. Here is a guy with 14 ML ABs, the type of hitter that Joba consistently mowed down as a starter in ’07 in the minors. He couldn’t put the guy away, walks the .071 hitter with a 3-2 slider! and, although there was no way of knowing at the time, he scores the run that is the difference in the game.

  25. Coach6423 October 1st, 2009 at 9:12 am

    My thoughts on Joba.

When he was very good against Boston Friday, everyone was ok with him starting. You can’t flip flop every time he makes a good start. Chad Gaudin and Joba are in the same boat. Neither are giving length. Gaudin has not gone 6 since he got here. Neither is a wonderful starting option at this point. I think you have to give Joba the start, based simply on, when he has needed to prove himself he has. Everytime, it is a must start well game he has. He has been very good against Boston for the last 2 years. He has been very good against Detroit. He has struggled absolutely, but Joba gives the better shot.

  26. bru October 1st, 2009 at 9:16 am

joba can be on the ps roster but at the expense of gaudin, bruney, coke, marte

    cc
    burnett
    pettitte
    hughes
    mo
    robertson
    marte
    coke
    bruney
    joba

but i would leave him off & put gaudin on

    cg has earned it

if the twins does makes it, it would be wise to bring 2 lefties. if it’s the tigers, then 1 lefty. why? because the tigers are loaded with right handed batters.

  30. Patrick October 1st, 2009 at 9:22 am

Even though this park gives up more home runs than a neutral park, it greatly suppresses doubles and triples. This means that it’s actually a fairly neutral park with respect to runs scored.

  31. Chambliss October 1st, 2009 at 9:23 am

It strikes me that Joba has issues getting motivated. He pitched very well against Boston last week with his job on the line in a game that had some relevance. He has had other very good outings against Boston this year.

He pitched poorly last night in a game that did not matter. He seems to lose focus easily.

I suspect that he will rise to the occasion if given the chance in the postseason, but I agree that the risk may outweigh the potential benefit in a short series. Someone like Gaudin would be a better choice because Gaudin can give you innings in a blowout or an extra inning game. I don’t think that you would want to use Joba out of the pen early if one of the starters gets bombed, and he is too unpredictable to rely upon in an extra inning game.

If the Yankees make it to the ALCS, Joba should be back on the roster, particularly if you face Boston against whom Joba has had a lot of success.

I think that last night was the end. I sat in my reg. seats with my son and saw the end of Jaba. He can not hit 95-96 any more or get the out when we need it. I fear the playoffs with him piching.

  37. JeterJobaCanoFanForever, enough said October 1st, 2009 at 10:06 pm

Gaudin has pitched how many innings in how many games and you expect him to pitch well in the post season for the Yankees? Joba still has that potential that he exhibited in 97 and 08. I don’t believe that the Yankees will leave Joba off the DS roster. Don’t let any of the media or others fool you. The Yankees know exactly Joba can do.

Joba didn’t do that well yesterday, but face it neither the A team produce in offense. Two way street, gang.

  38. JeterJobaCanoFanForever, enough said October 1st, 2009 at 10:09 pm

Wow. type much? Correction: 07 and what Joba can do.
