Sabathia not shaken, Teixeira just stirred

CC Sabathia and Joe Girardi both chalked up tonight’s woeful start (2.2 IP, 9 R, 5 ER, 8 H, 5 BB) to poor fastball command and good timing. “He had no command of his fastball,” Girardi said. “For whatever reason, it wasn’t there tonight. I don’t make too much out of it.”

Girardi had Sabathia on a pitch count of 85-90, but he talked earlier about how the opportunity to win 20 games made this an important game. The players in the clubhouse appeared to genuinely want the achievement for Sabathia, who said he found it difficult to pitch for an individual goal (win No. 20) in an otherwise meaningless game.

For more Sabathia, check out the audio here:

The news was positive about Mark Teixeira. The pitch hit him on the left hand, not left shoulder. It spooked him (any 94 MPH heater at the chin would) and he wanted to make sure all his facilities were in order.

Both Teixeira and Girardi were a bit short in answering the question, but they said the pitch from David Price was NOT intentional. I’ll leave you to draw your own conclusions.

Anyway, here’s Tex talking about the scare:

OK, more after I file my game story.
