No matter which they choose, Yankees’ ALDS to start early

Posted by: Josh Thomson - Posted in Misc on Oct 04, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

It has become customary for the Yankees to play in prime time — and something their fans came to expect. But no matter what day they start, the Yankees know when they will play. And it’s early.

MLB announced this afternoon that the Yankees’ ALDS Games 1 and 2 will start at 6:07 p.m., regardless of if it starts on Wednesday or Thursday. The coveted late-night spot goes to the Cardinals and Dodgers on Wednesday and Thursday and to the Red Sox and Angels on Friday.

The Yankees still have until one hour after their opponent is determined to choose their series. All games will be broadcast on TBS.

For a more comprehensive look at the schedule, check it out on MLB.com.

Both those games are on the west coast, that’s obviously why the Yankees will start early.

  2. Eric October 4th, 2009 at 7:11 pm

This is a total nightmare. Some of us don’t get home from work at 6. The place won’t be loud. I’m sure Fenway’s home games will start late so the crowd can be rowdy. I am so upset.

Wow, 6:00 is early. I was expecting 7 or 8 o’clock. Good thing I didn’t make the dinner plans that I was going to make.

  4. DK October 4th, 2009 at 7:14 pm

Who in NY has left work by 6????? No weekday playoff game should ever start before 8.

  5. Eric October 4th, 2009 at 7:15 pm

Thank you DK. I was actually thinking of buying tickets for my Dad and I on Friday. Now, forget it. I won’t get to see any of these games in their entirety. Nice job Major League Baseball.

  6. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Montero Fanaticus Primus October 4th, 2009 at 7:15 pm

Contrary to all you guys, I prefer the earlier start. More daylight, and if the game ends at nine instead of eleven, I don’t have to risk my safety going home. Yes, I know I’m weird.

You should be happy you are not a Phillies or Rockies fan. Their game starts at 2:37 on Wed and Thurs. I would be sooo pissed if that was the Yankees game.

I’ll miss the first inning. This stinks!

I’ll miss the first 3 innings since I end classes at 6. maybe I could convince my professor to let me go early? :D

jennifer – tell your boss you need to be home early due to an emergency, which that will be the Yankees post season. lol :D

  10. Doreen October 4th, 2009 at 7:21 pm

Doesn’t seem right that BOTH games 1 AND 2 get the early spot. But the games in LA, if it’s 9 here, it’s 6 pm there, so about the same.

(Except that no one in SoCal works later than 4 or 5 pm, right?)

  11. jennifer October 4th, 2009 at 7:22 pm

Ed- That won’t work. My boss is a stick in the mud. Doesn’t understand anything. :-(

  12. Doreen October 4th, 2009 at 7:22 pm

The kids, however, will be able to see entire Yankees playoff games, from first pitch to last!

  13. Christina October 4th, 2009 at 7:23 pm

That’s too bad about the early start. I work so I probably wont be able to catch the game until 7:30.

I know the last couple of years a lot of people were complaining about the late start times. Maybe this year they made sure to make them earlier so they don’t lose the people who can’t stay up until 12 to watch a game.

  17. Ed - 2009 will be the year of the Yanks October 4th, 2009 at 7:25 pm

too bad there wont be any replays. gotta rely on MLB tv for the replay. if only YES could encore it.

  18. Jeff NJ October 4th, 2009 at 7:26 pm

Works for me. Most people, I’d say 95% can get home 6 for a playoff game. These games take forever anyway. They’ll probably really start at 6:30 and end past 10. I much prefer this to 9 oclock starts from the past which often ended past 1AM.

  19. jennifer October 4th, 2009 at 7:29 pm

I take NJT and it sucks. I need to remember to take a radio with me. Maybe I can ask the bus driver to pipe the game over the intercom.

I know. Licking my chops too.

except, this is baseball. The harder you try to beat someone, the worse you do. And ultimately, why i have to pick football as the better sport

  29. Bronx Born October 4th, 2009 at 7:37 pm

Wow what a game. Just got home. We had excellent seats on 3rd baseline between dugout and bullpen. ARod’s shots were spectacular. Robertson and Chamberlain both looked really good. That ballpark is combination county fair and ballgame. It is very strange. To their credit most folks were very cordial despite my Yankee hat and shirt. Programs were free but the food zowied. $5 for a hot dog and $5 for a coke. Beers were $9. But truly all that mattered was that game and ending the regular season just right. Btw Cano in person looks so much better than on TV. He is so very smooth.

On the bright side at this time it’s only a 30% rain both Wednesday and Friday.

I know it was only one inning, but Joba pitched with more velocity, confidence, and didn’t have to pitch from the stretch. Hope he gets a bullpen spot.

  40. CR9 October 4th, 2009 at 7:43 pm

Not to take a page out of the infamous Jim-Pir book, this appears to MLB fixing it against the Yankees. The Yankees had the best home record in the league this year, and Bud will try anything to put the Yankees at a disadvantage. With the Red Sox getting the 4 p.m. Western time game on Thursday, the shadows will help the Red Sox starter, an effort to keep Angels baserunners off base and slow down the Angels run game.

  41. DK October 4th, 2009 at 7:43 pm

The solution to all this is so simple — on weekdays, put all games on at 8 p.m. local time and use as many channels as needed (TBS, TNT, etc. or put the series on a real network). With the extra off days in the division series, you’ll rarely have all 4 series playing on the same weekday in any event. As it stands now, most Yankee fans will miss most of games 1-2.

  42. Vader October 4th, 2009 at 7:44 pm

The real question here is…has Joba bumped Bruney from the ALDS roster?

The piching staff should shape up like this:
    Andy
    CC
    AJ
    Mo
    Phil
    Coke
    D-Rob
    Joba
    Ace
    Marte/Bruney

  43. Jon October 4th, 2009 at 7:45 pm

Imagine, games starting early enough that the future fans of baseball can watch them? Great concept! And quit the complaining. Yankee fans on the east coast have it great. Try a 3 or 4 p.m. start in the Pacific and Mountain time zones. Those are the fans that should be complaining.

  47. MC October 4th, 2009 at 7:47 pm

6pm start time is bull, for the 1st 2 games??? MLB sucks, now people have to try to leave work early just to see these playoff games we have waited 6 months for.

Early start times on the weekend are fine, but this stinks.

  48. rb October 4th, 2009 at 7:49 pm

Someone is always going to be upset. I rarely support MLB, but seriously, every year someone complains “these games start too late”, “kids can’t watch”, etc. The NL teams are all west of here and Boston is playing LAA. Are you really surprised that they get the “later” start time?

The only thing that I will truly be upset to miss is opening ceremonies. I sincerely doubt that first pitch will actually be at 6:07.

  51. Charlie October 4th, 2009 at 7:52 pm

Are all the posters on this board brand new Yankee fans? The Yankees have played mid-week day playoff games in the past and the world didn’t collapse. 2006 ALDS game 2. 2003 ALDS game 1. And one of the great Yankee games in history – 1996 ALCS game 1 started in the afternoon. The past has also proven that 8pm start times is too late, as the games inevitably stretch deep into the night. Stop complaining, people.

For me, and I know I’m in the minority, 6 p.m. start IS prime time. We have dinner at 5:30 and we’re ready to go. Even if it’s a 4 hour game, it’ll be over by 10:30 or 11:00 (figuring the game doesn’t start on time). it’s ideal. But, for my husband, he doesn’t get home till 8, and goes to sleep around 10:30, so he’d miss the end of the games. He’d rather miss the early stuff and see the end during the week.

It’s all good. They’re in the playoffs!!!

  61. mick October 4th, 2009 at 8:01 pm

so it looks like joba, hughes and mo for the 7-8-9.
    11 pitchers total without gaudin.
after joba shines in the alds, gaudin can go game 4 alcs.

14 position players minus hinske would be my guess.

  62. pat October 4th, 2009 at 8:02 pm

“You’ve got to be careful what you ask for, that’s for sure,” Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez said. “It’s two great teams going down to the wire. It’s just good for baseball.”

I wonder if the players really have a preference between Twins and Tigs.

  63. xoxo October 4th, 2009 at 8:05 pm

If MLB complains about the low rating ,like they always do,it’s on them.

Due to the fact that 40% of the revenue of all MLB products are Yankees, and the other 60% the rest of the MLB tams, feature the Cards and Dodgers in primetime, your loss MLB.

How could it be,that MLB would slap the Yankees in the face like this? The only team with 100 plus wins this season!!

  64. Ed - 2009 will be the year of the Yanks October 4th, 2009 at 8:05 pm

    Nick,

LOL, sure did. looks like I made the right choice. :D

  65. Doreen October 4th, 2009 at 8:06 pm

    pat -

If they have a preference, it’s a private one. It’d be foolish for them to state a preference. All that would do is feed the beast – give the opposing team extra motivation, either way. A team needs to just go about it’s own difference. Mo said it, too, when Kim Jones asked him his preference, Mo said, that’s their business, basically.

  66. Ed - 2009 will be the year of the Yanks October 4th, 2009 at 8:06 pm

    pat,

you would wonder if the Yanks really hope the twins to win it due to their starting pitching. :?

  67. Nick in SF October 4th, 2009 at 8:08 pm

Unless you think that the Yankees make any matchup more marquee all by themselves, Boston-Anaheim and Los Angeles-St. Louis are both probably a little better to the general audience, especially since the Yanks will be big favorites (yes, yes, I know what being big favorites has gotten us in recent years, save your cards and letters).

  72. pat October 4th, 2009 at 8:16 pm

    Doreen

I know it would be foolish for them to voice it.

Most people seem to be saying the Twins would be the easier road because of the Tigers SP.

Based on the “be careful what you wish for” answer from Alex, sounds like the players, or at least him, isn’t putting much credence into the better match-up on paper.

  73. Seven October 4th, 2009 at 8:16 pm

Not sure if I am in the minority here, but I would rather possibly miss the first 30 minutes of the game than be up after midnight with an 8pm start. They are always long games.

  75. Nick in SF October 4th, 2009 at 8:20 pm

In the recent past, I think people have complained about playoff games competing with each other on multiple channels. If every game is going to be TBS in an exclusive time window, this is what you’re going to get.

I’m sure Phillies and Rockies fans are going to be even more annoyed with their time slots.

I hope they have spillover-channel contingency plans if games go long and spill over from their time slots. I guess that’s a no-brainer.

I went for a long walk (victory walk!) around town. So thank you for the audio.

And what kind of mess was that in the game thread?

Who cares what was said what seems like 20 years ago? Someone said it, several of us vehemently argued against it, and it died out. End of story. Especially since the person who made the initial comment isn’t here to talk about it.

  79. Yankee Trader October 4th, 2009 at 8:22 pm

Secretely their preference would be Minnesota, since they wouldn’t have to face Verlander in game 2 and possibly 5.

However in a 5 game series, who knows. Hopefully Tuesday’s playoff game goes extra innings, their flight to NY gets delayed and their hotel reservations are cancelled!!! LOL.

6pm start is miserable for one reason that another poster stated early on….late arriving crowd and a game started in daylight (for first inning or so)……not wild, not loud, not awesome, not intimidating.

  87. Mark in Tampa October 4th, 2009 at 8:28 pm

I’m not sure how many viewers would really be lost if they showed multiple games at the same time. I know that I will watch the Yankee games, and nothing else. I will periodically check the scores of the other games, but not sit and watch 9 innings. Football, I watch every game I can, but I find it hard to watch baseball games involving teams that I am not emotionally invested in.

  89. Mark in Tampa October 4th, 2009 at 8:29 pm

“One of my friends wants to have dinner with me next Weddnesday night, which is the possible Game 5. What do I do??”

Have faith that the Yanks will end it in 3 or 4.

  90. Charlie October 4th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

Arliss. You don’t know what you’re talking about. If the Yankees need it to be nighttime for the fans to be loud then they’re an undeserving team with an undeserving fanbase. But that’s simply not the case. Additionally, it’ll be dark by seven pm anyway, so your point is irrelevant on two fronts. Congratulations.

“6pm start is miserable for one reason that another poster stated early on….late arriving crowd and a game started in daylight (for first inning or so)……not wild, not loud, not awesome, not intimidating”

The primary occupation for those who have playoff tix is watching their money earn more money. They’ll make sure their limos drop them off in time to make plenty of noise. Besides, it’s not the fans and stadium which intimidate. It’s the
    team.

  94. Nick in SF October 4th, 2009 at 8:37 pm

Pat M: I took the Steelers -3.5 1H and I took them on the ML in a parlay and a couple teasers. Hate to go against you but I had to make a call. I don’t need the 7 points at the end, so I hope you get the backdoor cover.

“The team is unlikely to make any formal announcement until the conclusion of Tuesday night’s Tigers-Twins playoff, but Joe Girardi informed CC Sabathia after today’s game that he would be pitching Game 1 on Wednesday, which is good enough for me.”

I think so too. I have known her forever. I was actually at her house the night the Yankees won the 1996 World Series. She was so annoyed in my complete disinterest in her Halloween party cause I was watching Tv the whole night, that when the Yankees won and I ran out into the street screaming, I had to beg for 5 minutes to be let back in.

So bottom line, she understands my love for the Yankees

  97. smile for the camera October 4th, 2009 at 8:45 pm

Um, I think most people with playoff tickets will find a way to make the game on time. Anyhow, let’s do this, it’s time to start the true quest for #27. I’m liking this team’s talent, cohesion, and confidence. I think the playoffs will be fun.

Erica, what if you have to take a shower, or write an impassioned plea to the team? (I read through the game thread and I noticed you did it again btw – your success rate is amazing!) Or for that matter have a PC (pretend conversation) with your PBF? I think the dinner plans must be contingent on the no Yankee game. :)

Thank you very much. I sometimes wonder if these efforts go unnoticed. I am pretty sure my letters to the team have never failed. And my pretend discussion with Johnny Damon after his last strike out led to two hits in the same inning. I am definitely doing something right.

I am also pretty sure as a newcomer to running this blog and seeing my comments this weekend that Josh must think I am totally insane.

First, congrtulations to A-Rod on 12 year streak of 30 HR and 100 RBIs. I mentioned it on the blog a few times before, but as the season was coming to close, I thought it would not be possible. It is a great achievement. If he stays healthy next year, he will break the tie and have the record for himself.

Regarding the start time of 6:07 pm, I prefer to miss the start of the game rather than the end of the game. I would like the game and post game show to be done by 10:30 pm so that I get to work on-time next day.

  112. Mike October 4th, 2009 at 8:58 pm

I prefer a 6pm start. no late nights.

    7 would be optimal.

8 wouldnt exactly be bad, but playoff games are generally long and it will kill me to stay up until 12 for 2-4 weeks when I gotta get up early.

In both 2006 and 2007, the Yankees got exactly the teams they wanted. I’d say that they have experience in the “be careful what you wish for” game. :)

  125. E c h o. R o m e o . October 4th, 2009 at 9:11 pm

    Let’s see

2006, game 2 was postponed. Verlander started game 2. Tigers won.

2009, game 2 will be postponed (?). Verlander will start game 2. Tigers will win (?).

  126. E c h o. R o m e o . October 4th, 2009 at 9:17 pm

30% rain according to weather.com on Wednesday and Friday.

I hope Steinbrenner is buying some of those rain dispersing pellets from the Chinese.

We must win game 1. Game 2 is pretty much a giveaway when Verlander starts. (Tigers will win Tuesday.)

  127. Jeremy October 4th, 2009 at 9:17 pm

The Tigers might not even make it. So why are you even talking about Verlander and the Tigers. Second the weather can change so stop making predictions.

Random, but this is amazing, so…

I just read the most insane story ever. It was in Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul II (Tennage nephew recommended the story; he was right). It was about this dude named Mike Powell who grew up on the streets in LA raising his 7 siblings while his abusive, cocaine addicted father and drug addict mother moved them into homes with prostitiutes, drug addicts and murderers. Mike Powell had to raise his family in the middle of all this, taking on all the responsibilities of a father to the other children. When this started he was 8 years old.

That doesn’t reveal half the insanity of it. Read the story. It’s incredible.

  142. Abdababdaserser October 4th, 2009 at 9:36 pm

To read some of the people here, you would think Verlander has never lost a game this season. Yes, he is a good pitcher, yet the game played today was 5-3. Not an overwhelming victory.

The Yankees have done a good job against good pitching. The Yankee pitching and bullpen are good. Either team will offer a challenge, but guess what, so will the Yankees.

    Wed. 19-6
    Thu. 11-7

    A little known fact.

When you go to a restaraunt in Melbourne, you bring your own wine. The most reasonable good wine in the world. Compared to on site, the wine they export is swill. And the food is to die for. Very strict preservative laws.

In Perth, you can have fried bananas fresh from the back yard.

The aesthetic appreciation of the beaches starting with Adelaide.

  153. adrian mckinty October 4th, 2009 at 10:58 pm

Well, I’m a displaced Mick so Vegemite has become an acquired taste. But with butter and toast its surprsingly tasty.

For a nation of beer drinkers though you have to really search to get a decent brew.

  154. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing October 5th, 2009 at 6:58 pm

It is very tasty. Salty tasty – but tasty nevertheless.

I used to drink Crown Lager, I hate Fosters/XXXX/VB etc.

There’s tons of Irish pubs in Melbourne, surely you can find a passable brew at one of those?
