Tickets go on sale this morning

Posted by: Sam Borden - Posted in Misc on Oct 05, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Just a reminder that ALDS and ALCS tickets go on sale in less than one hour, at 10 a.m. Eastern.

If you want to see the entire press release the Yankees sent out about ticket sales for the first two rounds, it’s right here.

By the way, since I know it was a hot topic on a previous post: The 6:07 p.m. start time is definitely strange and I know it’s going to be tough for some people to get out of work in time for first pitch. That said, it’s hard for me to be too upset about a start time that’s going to allow more kids to stay up and see their team’s entire game. The 8 p.m.-that’s-actually-8:40 start times meant games weren’t finishing until midnight or later, and that’s too late for kids who have school the next day.

I remember falling asleep when I was 11 years old watching the 2001 WS. I missed a couple of those walk-offs. The 8 pm start can wait until the ALCS/WS.

A game ending at midnight is too late for adults that have work the next day :-)

Great point! my kids will see it all now, which is very cool..

“On Boston radio this morning, they were seriously discussing whether Alex’s 7-RBI inning would create more pressure for him in the playoffs.”

    bd-

ever since alex changed his approach with a shorter higher contact swing he’s been a much better hitter.

when he started hitting ground balls up the middle for run producing 2 out base hits you could tell he was a different hitter.

he’s much more relaxed because he knows he can put the bat on the ball.

he really didn’t know this before. i’m expecting a big post season by him.

There is no playoff game too early or too late for a true Yankee fan. If you are going to game, get creative and get out early. This is why if you are a Yankee fan you should know to save those personal/vaca hours for this time of year.

Talk about staying up late..it seems like yesterday when I was a 13 year old when my mom dragged me to the stadium and we camped out overnight for 20+ hours for World Series tix in ’96. Needless to say we did not get them but my virgin eyes did witness many things I should not have seen including mini-riots, bonfires, and bumrushes from hell.

    randy l -

I agree. Alex is just meeting the ball with his bat more often. And the results have been phenomenal. He’ll always get his homeruns; the difference is, or one of them, that he’s not “trying” to put the ball out of the park; he’s not “trying” to be “the guy,” though he has ended up being “the guy” a whole lot of times this season!

I expect his post-season to look a lot like his regular season this time around. And I expect that Mark Teixeira will have a good post-season, as well – mainly because the guy is so even-keeled. I’m hoping that giving CC a little extra rest down the stretch (extra off-days, I think it worked out to be), and him not having to be the one on whom everything was riding, is going to give him more of an advantage going into this post-season than he’s had before.

I keep saying, “of course, anything can happen,” because anything can. And I’m not underestimating the Twins or the Tigers, and I think it’s important not to anticipate that either team is going to be “exhausted” on Wednesday – it’s just as likely that they’ll be full of adrenaline at least the first game. Yankees just have to focus on their game.

    I’m nervous, but I think it’s a good nervous!

  8. Paco Dooley October 5th, 2009 at 9:31 am

I like the fact that they are doing earlier starts. The trend towards later starts has really damaged the ability of East Coast fans to follow playoff games (but I am not sure how it goes over out west).

As a Yankees fan (and former NYer) living in the UK, I appreciate earlier starts in particular! I might even manage to stay up and watch what I call an 11:07pm start!

  9. Dano October 5th, 2009 at 9:32 am

Sam – it’s particularly great news for Yankee fans in England! My previous Octobers (not last year, sadly) have involved struggling to stay up with a pot of coffee until around 3-4am.
At least this takes the edge off…

  10. randy l. October 5th, 2009 at 9:35 am

kids and the elderly get killed by late starting times. my father who’s 88 and has watched the yankees passionately since the time of ruth and gehrig conks out at 9:00 most nights.

the 6:00 starts are great for him. he’ll try to stay up for late playoff games, but it’s not easy.

kids and grandparents are a big part of the baseball fabric and are part of what made the game a a cross generational interest. anything that gets young kids and their grandparents watching their favorite team is a way to help pass on the torch to future generations.

i own my own business and don’t have to be at work until 10:00 am so it doesn’t matter to me personally, but i think games should start at 7:00 eastern standard time to hit the broadest audience.

and who cares about watching the other teams if games are on at the same time. that’s what commercials are for.

  11. Someone Else October 5th, 2009 at 9:37 am

So, instead of having 8:40 starting times, we’ll move them to 6. There’s nothing in between??!

This is going to suck (I get home at 7 due to a long commute). At least I can listen to Sterling and Waldman on my ride home, ugh.

  12. NYY626 October 5th, 2009 at 9:38 am

I remember staying late as an 11 year old watching the 96 world series. Playoffs are the one time when you’re a kid that your parents really can’t force you to go to bed early. And most teachers understand why you are groggy in class…

That being said, I’m not going to complain about start times. 6pm is a little awkward, but hopefully I can sneak out of work a bit early on wednesday so I don’t miss anything.

Side note: I just came back from a weekend in Boston. I did my best to leave my yankee-ness around the city :)

Is it bad that I hope the Twins win the one-game playoff, just because I am going to Game 2 of the ALDS and really want to have the opportunity to yell at Carl Pavano from the LF bleachers while he warms up in the bullpen? I am really rooting for that, and I don’t need to be reminded that he has always pitched well against the Yankees in his career and all that jazz. It would still be great, from a personal standpoint at least.

  14. Patrick October 5th, 2009 at 9:40 am

Ahh yeah I don’t really care about the starting times. I’ll just leave work early on the days the Yankees play.

  15. randy l. October 5th, 2009 at 9:41 am

“And I expect that Mark Teixeira will have a good post-season, as well”

    doreen-

i hadn’t though about it, but if alex has a big playoffs it’s likely teixeira will be seeing some pretty good pitches because they won’t want to be walking him ahead of arod so he could have a really good post season too.

the two of them hot at the same time could obviously carry the team.

The earlier start times make it easier for kids to watch (and me since I get up early for work. Hopefully people who have to work late can record the beginning, or catch up in the post-game.

What a great end to the season, esp for Alex. I think he will be fine in the post season, he has really been helped by having Tex and a healthy Posada and Matsui this year.

  18. Andrew GTLU Bronze Medalist October 5th, 2009 at 9:47 am

Erica, Friday night, playoff baseball in the Bronx, temperatures in the 50s–it doesn’t get any better, and I hope it works out that you get a ticket. I am leaving work at 3 to start the festivities that day; I hope to be a part of a good and loud/rowdy(but respectably rowdy, of course) crowd.

  19. RonH October 5th, 2009 at 9:49 am

I agree about the start time, Sam. I’ll gladly sacrifice a little of the game early so my son can watch a little later.

  20. Erin October 5th, 2009 at 9:51 am

I’m so jealous of everyone who gets to go watch a post season game in person. Living in the midwest that’s an impossibility for me. The good news for me is, the games start right when I get home from work, so I don’t have to beg my boss to let me leave early. LOL

I am not going near HR to ask about leaving work at 3 unless I am sure I am going to the game. There is no point in begging and pleading until I am sure its required.

But I think my plan is if I go, to drive to the game directly from work and meet up with my friend there.

    randy l -

And Matsui, too, should be a help to Alex (as he himself mentioned that Hideki as protection behind him has been great this season).

I am curious to see what the lineup looks like if Girardi does indeed opt to have Molina catch AJ. Will it be a day off for Jorge? Or do we lose Matsui in the lineup? Tough call, and I’d imagine it will have to do with who is pitching for the other team. It’s the only trepidation I have as far as the offense goes. Although, it is an offense that has been worked before and had success before (with Molina & Posada, no Matsui, and Molina & Matsui, no Posada), so it’s not like it’s going in a totally different direction.

Which speaks to the fact that Girardi has really put the team through its paces this season. There won’t be too much overthinking in the post-season, because they’ve pretty much covered all the permutations over the course of the regular season. The biggest question marks are the exact make-up of the bullpen, but I have confidence in all the arms down there, no matter who is included (and I mean the major arms, not Melancon, Albie, Mitre, Ramirez, et al.)

I work on Long Island in Jericho. I don’t see myself having time to get home, jump on the LIRR and then transfer to a subway to the stadium. Its actually more cost efficient to drive and pay for stadium parking. When I go I have been parking in Lot B which is near the MetroNorth Station. I would try to park there again, but I am not sure what the parking situation is going to be like. I am not worried about the start time so much, if I leave here at 3 I should be there by 4. I just have to deal with the parking situation

  36. Arno October 5th, 2009 at 10:09 am

How many tickets did they have for sale? 4? 5?

    No dice here…

  37. Andrew GTLU Bronze Medalist October 5th, 2009 at 10:10 am

There were not very many tickets available when I bought mine, and I’m a partial season ticket holder (I have the smallest season ticket plan, which is 12 weeknight games).

The way the postseason process was explained to me is as follows:

Full season ticket holders (over 20 game plans), along with 1,000 randomly selected partial season ticket holders, had the very very first crack at tickets on Wednesday, 9/23. Then, on Friday 9/25 all partial season ticket holders had their chance at tickets. By this time, there were not many tickets left for Games 1 or 2 of the ALDS, and the earliest game I could get tickets to for the ALCS was Game 6 (Home Game 3) which may or may not happen.

Now fast-forward to today, is when the general public gets the chance, so I assume there is hardly anything left.

  38. Alexxxx October 5th, 2009 at 10:12 am

This was obviously a lost cause even before logging onto TM. It’s near impossible to get postseason tickets if you’re not in on the presale.

i pretty much expect to see molina catch burnett simply because he’s been catching him for the last 6 weeks or so. burnett is used to him at this point .

what i’m wondering about is whether girardi wants cervelli on the roster so he can make more moves with molina and posada. cervelli would just be there for emergencies, but it would free girardi up if he wants to micro manage and i think he will tend to do that in the postseason.

i really think the wheels will be turning with girardi, much more than the regular season.

  48. GorillaFight October 5th, 2009 at 10:38 am

  49. Jim October 5th, 2009 at 10:50 am

Put me down as one who’s happy with the earlier starts. 7:05 would be ideal, but given the choice of missing the first couple innings or having to struggle to stay up to midnight or later for the last few and having to sleepwalk through the next day, I’ll take the early start. And use those DVRs! Get home at 7 or 7:30, then watch it on your own schedule and without those incredibly annoying TBS commercials that I’m sure will fill every break again this year.

  50. vey October 5th, 2009 at 10:55 am

The Yanks are much dearer to me than any other because they’ll always be my Dad’s team.

He, too, grew up w/Ruth & Gehrig. Joe D? The love of his baseball life. And he wanted to name our first cat “Mickey”, but my mother and sister nixed it.

Yanks indeed are like the family heirloom. The older folks deserve to watch their team in their comfort zone.

  52. Jon Locke October 5th, 2009 at 11:08 am

The game SHOULD start at exactly 6:08 PM.. The only way it’s delayed is if the Phillies/Rockies game lasts too long. I think they would have up until 30 mins later *6:38* to finish it or the Yankees game would start on a sister network (TNT)and then conclude on TBS once the 1st game finishes.

But as you can see, they try and schedule the games so this won’t happen and they still have time for a 30+ min pregame.

Kids will be watching most exciting part of game right before bed time. Enter the sandman to put the opponents to sleep and the kids ready for bed!

  57. yankeegirl49 October 5th, 2009 at 2:12 pm

I like the early start time a lot. I am going to game 1 and now won’t have to get home at 1 AM.

As for the kids..when my daughter (who is now 20) wanted to stay up I always let her. In fact, I took her to the playoff games that started at 8 or 830. If she was too tired to go to school the next day, she stayed home. One or 2 days didn’t ruin her academic career. The Yankees and baseball in general are both of our passions and she is now a senior in college majoring in sports journalism. Even from 1400 miles away, we watch the games “together” via text, IM and phone calls. A mother/daughter combo with a passion for sports is not as common as a father/son, but it gave us a common ground all throughout her teenage years and we have an amazing relationship, a lot of which I credit to that.
No all lessons are learned in the classroom.
