Tigers’ Cabrera was in a fight with his wife

Sam Borden
October

There were a lot of questions about the bruise and cut that Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera had on his face on Sunday but Cabrera wouldn’t talk about it. Now comes word that, according to police, Cabrera was in a fight with his wife early Saturday morning after he came home drunk at 5 a.m.

Cabrera went to the police station after officers arrived at the house but was not arrested or charged. Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski picked him up from the station around 7:30 a.m.

UPDATE, 11:58 a.m.: Just to clarify – as it says in the story, Cabrera went to the station with officers because his wife requested that he leave the house. There are no charges pending in the case, though the more you read about the details of situation – many of which are in this Detroit Free Press story – the more ridiculous it seems. Cabrera was partying with White Sox players while his team is fighting for a playoff spot? In two of the biggest games of the season, Cabrera went a combined 0-for-7 with eight LOB.

    Oops.

brought to the police station, yet not charged?

    charges coming maybe?

Jim Leyland hits his players because he loves them

Wow. Leland initially said that it was a personal matter and that it’s been taken care of. My first thought was fight in the clubhouse.

Then there was a comment in the initial espn article saying that Cabrera frequents a certain hotel bar quite frequently and is always getting into trouble. (friend of a friend type of story).

And then the next article was about the cops coming to his house.

Sam scooped espn.com with the ride downtown info!

Well, sorta. espn.com revised their fight with wife story with the ride in the black and white at 11:43 a.m.

    craziness!

Not for nothing, but coming home drunk at 5am when your team is in an absolute dog fight for a playoff spot is pretty brutal. Take a look at his Saturday stats:

    0-4, 1k, only saw 9 pitches.

I posted this earlier in the last thread

“The Yankees have this year’s AL MVP in Mark Teixeira. Joe Mauer was phenomenal, hitting .364 while catching every day in Minnesota, but Teixeira changed the Yankees as well as the balance of power in the AL East — and not just this season, but for years to come.

The Red Sox experience at Fenway Park should always start with a stop at the “Sausage King” stand on the corner of Brookline Avenue and Lansdowne Street outside the park for an order of their steak tips. I guarantee it will be the best ballpark food you’ve ever had. ”

Also being reported, Cabrera was out partying with White Sox players and blew a .26 BA at the station

  10. Matty Viernes

He wasn’t DUI, and the police said that both he and his wife were “aggressors” in the situation – hence the marks he has – so no charges.

I can’t judge him on his drinking, although he is in a pennant race. If it was the middle of the regular season, I could look the other way…

  11. m

    Rishi,

I saw that and decided that this Barhamieu (sp?) was my favorite espn guy.

    randy l,

No love for the catchers? Who do you put on instead? The loser of the Bruney/Marte arm-wrestling contest (wouldn’t the lefty lose that one?) :P

The two days between games is a huge luxury for the relievers, I like having more position players. You know Girardi’s going to do a lot of late inning substitutions.

  12. Matty Viernes

    Jesse -

The .26 BAC sounds bogus – I don’t think they can test you for booze w/o probable cause – if he wasn’t driving, and he was taken into the police station and not drunk in public…

  13. pat

“If it was the middle of the regular season, I could look the other way…”

The NY media and people here were on blast because Alex left a club at 2am in Miami in June after being given the night off and that didn’t involve violence, intoxication or police intervention.

I think some Yankee fans might take offense to Cabrera’s behavior no matter when it happened.

  14. pat

    Matty

Not bogus. From the DPF story I linked above:

“Cabrera registered a .26 blood-alcohol level when tested by police, Commander Mark Clemence said.”

  15. Matty Viernes

    Pat -

It just shows the short memories of the mouthbreathing NY media who blasted A-Rod for being out til 2am and the people who parrot their outrage.

David Wells went out drinking one night before he pitched in 1998.

    Just saying.

  16. Rex

People have always said Cabrera could hit in his sleep. If we’re to believe this, he probably has a few times over the years.

  17. iiicollies

Imagine if Cabrera was playing here with all the media attantion

Even more intersting when you consider he is very open about his Red Sox fandom

What a coward. Any guy who feels the need to put his hands on a woman is a coward, straight up.

  20. Abdababdaserser

Seems Cabrera is out celebrating a little prematurely, and at this time, when going on to the post season or going home is on the line, it is hurting his team.

He carries that teams offense this year, so him going through a slump isn’t being helped by his partying.

  21. JZ

Didn’t Sox players all drink before every game in 2004 ALCS?

  22. Nick in SF

Of course his wife is mad at him; she wants that playoff share.

  23. crawdaddy

Husband comes home drunk, wife starts fighting with him for being out all night drinking, cops are called and husband asked to leave the house. That scenario was more prevalent years ago, but it still comes up from time to time.

However, if I’m a Tiger fan, I would have a major problem with who is was drinking with and when he was drinking. I’m sure his teammates and Tiger officials aren’t overjoyed either.

  24. crawdaddy

“What a coward. Any guy who feels the need to put his hands on a woman is a coward, straight up.”

Chances are she was the aggressor which is why he wasn’t arrested for domestic violence.

  25. Rex

“Didn’t Sox players all drink before every game in 2004 ALCS?”

Some scuttlebut that many drained a shot before the game. That’s nothing compared to this. .26 BAC? That’s almost a walking sponge.

Yup. Unfortunately, the culture encourages it. Women are dehumanized through objectification. They’re also always appearing with toe tags in shows like CSI as victims of violent crime. The culture not only accepts – but actually gets off on – physical and mental abuse of women.

  27. Noreaster

Bottom line, if you come home drunk and your wife calls the cops…it’s your fault. Just fall on your freaking sword and say I’m sorry…

At least Boomer pitched well when he was hung over!

  28. randy l.

“No love for the catchers? Who do you put on instead?”

off the top of my head… gaudin.

i’m not big on putting inexperienced players in the playoffs.

on the other hand cervelli might be so inexperienced that he’d not eve know enough to get nervous :)

  29. Abdababdaserser

Maybe he was trying to get a number of the White Sox hungover so they could get a win. Maybe it was one of those grand strategies by Leland, and Cabrera volunteered to help.

  30. Nick in SF

Cervelli seems to be a pretty cool customer. If he’s on the roster and gets some playing time, I have no doubt he’ll perform at the same level we’ve seen.

  31. bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes

Every time the offense is referenced from 2007 ALDS, people always say “nobody hit.”

Cano hit .333 w/a .375 OBP in that short-lived series.

I think he hit 2 HR as well.

It’s a shame we didn’t go any further. Which is probably why no one remembers that he wielded a pretty healthy bat.

Cano is going to rake starting Wednesday. His time has come :D .

There’s another story on nesn.com about a mutiny in Blue Jays locker Room. It seems some players went to mgmt about Cito.

When you lose the players respect, you’re ineffective.Cito’s days numbered, watch.

Can you imagine any Yankee going to Cashman about Joe’s managing?

  34. Hokiehill

“What a coward. Any guy who feels the need to put his hands on a woman is a coward, straight up.”

I agree, if that’s what happened…Sounds like it was the woman putting her hands on the man. I think if he had been the one doing the hitting/scratching then he would have been riding to the station to get booked, not to “get out of the house.” At least that’s the way it should be. On the reverse it’s funny that the woman being the agressor (again, if that’s the way it was) means the man gets taken out of the house instead of the woman being arrested…

Whatever, either way, if you are domestically violent (as a man or a woman) you need to grow up and realize that physically fighting over things hasn’t been ok since about the 1st grade (and it wasn’t acceptable then, but hey, at least you were only 6 or 7)

  35. E-gawa

Cervelli is an exciting player. Unless they buy Joe Mauer, I think he has a bright future in this organization.

  36. Rex

“Can you imagine any Yankee going to Cashman about Joe’s managing?”

I could last year. This year? Not so much.

  37. Frank

He was probably out with Jenks and Pierzynski… I saw them out in Baltimore last year, boy could those two party it up

  38. Guest

    .26 BAC

    Domestic Disturbance with wife.

    Team in mad-playoff scramble.

    Drinking with opposing team.

Had to be picked up by team GM.

Going 0-4 with a K in the following game (and I believe an important GIDP).

    Wow.

We can only begin to imagine the outrage if this were A-Rod. I mean it would be EPIC. Mike Lupica and Wallace Matthews would have 50,000 word novels on the topic. I think Francessa would actually devour is microphone out of anger…

  39. AGB

How does a 225lb plus man have a .26 BAC after several HOURS of drinking?? He’d have to put down 10-15 drinks, minimum!

If I got wasted drunk just before the biggest work related event of my career I’d be fired. Meahwhile, fatboy Cabrera does just that (after tanking the last 2 weeks) and then has the audacity to call his BOSS to pick him up from the police station!

    What a messed up world.

  40. B.E. Earl

There was always the scuttlebutt in Florida that Cabrera ate/partied too much. Same thing with Dontrelle. Looks like its at least true in Cabrera’s case. What a dope.

  41. GGBG (Magic Number: ZERO!)

No one would care what Cabrera’s BAC was if he went 3-4 with 5 RBI and carried the Tigers to a the AL Central title.

  42. Paco Dooley

I hope this costs most if not all of the possible MVP votes, and pushes him on the rest of the ballots. Mauer, Jeter and Tex all deserve votes above a player that gives up his team when they need him most.

Generally when the Yankees don’t go after a player I really wanted, I realize that they have a brain (e.g., Manny, Cabrera).

  43. JV

What’s the big deal? Giambi did the same thing in FL during the 2003 WS and it didn’t affect him or the team. Oh, wait a minute…

  44. Steve

Bet tigers cannot wait and hope that someone will take Miggy off their hands. This is a classic example of a player not being a team player when it most counts. his team is tanking and he is out drinking all night with the opposition. When I first heard about the bruises I just figured it involved a woman who was probably not his wife. Well it was a woman but it was his wife. Can’t say I blame her for being angry. She has common sense to realize that this bum is throwing away playoff cash!

Based on bruises that he has tells me that you don’t want to mess with her.

Cabrera has a world of ability and snot for brains. That is why he will likely not be in this game by age 30.
