Who’s hot, who’s not coming into October

These Yankees will come into Game 1 off a particularly strong September:

Robinson Cano: .350, 4 HR, 9 2B, 13 RBI
Mark Teixeira:
.343, 7 HR, 20 RBI, 1.081 OPS
Alex Rodriguez:
.337, 5 HR, 23 RBI

These are guys who had a particularly hot final stretch:

Derek Jeter: 5-for-last-12, 1 HR, 1.167 OPS
Alex Rodriguez:
4-for-last-13, 2 HR, 7 RBI, .769 slugging

And these are guys who … didn’t.

Johnny Damon: 8-for-last-36, 0 HR, 4 R
Hideki Matsui:
3-for-last-21, 0 HR, 2 RBI, 7K

Johnny and Hideki are proven playoff performers though, so I worry less about them slumping into October. The faith will still be there if they come up in an important situation this month.

  2. vinny-b (as AJ Burnett goes so will the yankees post season) October 6th, 2009 at 8:52 am

    it’s official:

with this long layoff. I rather face the Tigers

the Twins bats are hot. They Yankees bats will be cold (cuz they haven’t been playing)

  3. ditmars1929 October 6th, 2009 at 8:55 am

I agree with Andrew, even though he only won a crappy bronze medal.

Vinny, I still don’t think the Yankees will have trouble with either the Tigers or the Twins. They should be able to beat either one, and I expect them to. But, if I really had to pick a team to face, I’d prefer the Twins.

  4. jennifer October 6th, 2009 at 8:55 am

I’m so excited for the post season to get started! Why did they need a 2 day layoff? It should start today!

  5. Paco Dooley October 6th, 2009 at 8:55 am

Matsui is a streaky hitter, so you have to keep him in there, at least against righties. I’m a bit more concerned that Damon is run down, and I hope that the few days off will give him a recharge and get him rolling again,.

  6. upstate kate October 6th, 2009 at 8:56 am

I agree Jennifer. The play off game today will be a poor substitute. I am glad the Yankees have the early game. Did Erica get a ticket?

  7. jennifer October 6th, 2009 at 8:57 am

You know it is so funny, in Newsday Kevin Davidoff says he spoke to a scout that said the Tigers have no chance against the Yankees.

Than in today’s Bergen Record, they are saying the Twins have no chance.

I really don’t care who we get. I just want a 15 inning game. Let them land in NY at 4 am!

I wonder if the players are going to stay at the stadium to watch the game. I really think it would be cool if they all bonded and watched it together.

  8. Rex October 6th, 2009 at 8:57 am

None of this matters. Especially with the layoff in between games. Everyone starts at .000, 0 and 0 and goes forward from there.

  9. Garrius October 6th, 2009 at 8:58 am

I wonder if Matsui will get his knee drained before the playoffs. He seemed to get streaky when it happened before.

Damon got 2 doubles in the last game, so he should get some confidence from that.

  10. jennifer October 6th, 2009 at 8:58 am

I wish I was going to Yankee Stadium to watch the workout! How much fun would that be! Bask in the glow of the Yankees returning to their rightful place! The PLAYOFFS!

  11. Erin October 6th, 2009 at 9:00 am

Maybe it’s good Damon and Matsui had a rough month. They should be due to get hot again.

  12. Noreaster October 6th, 2009 at 9:05 am

Matsui will be there in the playoffs, he is a pro.

  13. upstate kate October 6th, 2009 at 9:06 am

Johnny D had a few hits the last game, he is just getting warmed up.

  14. Rex October 6th, 2009 at 9:09 am

If Molina does indeed catch Burnett, it’ll be interesting to see which game and how they handle the DH. I’d argue that it’s Posada if Burnett pitches Game 2 and Matsui, if Burnett pitches Game 3. Why?

Posada at NYS = .325 avg with a 1.013 OPS
    Posada OTR = .245 avg with a .760 OPS

Matsui at NYS = .265 avg with a .813 OPS
    Matsui OTR = .285 avg with a .950 OPS

Of course, I’d make a better argument that both should be in the lineup all the time, no matter where the game is.

  15. Imback October 6th, 2009 at 9:10 am

Maybe vs Detroit, girardi will channel his inner bigelow and bat the best player in baseball in the 8 slot and not defend him when he argues a bogus non call at third. I thanked god 162 times this tear that torre was gone.

  16. Joey's Poodle October 6th, 2009 at 9:12 am

    I’m sure you did.

  17. Mark in Tampa October 6th, 2009 at 9:14 am

    Rex,

It would probably be more dependent on the opposing pitcher, and that matchup, but I agree that both in the lineup would be my preference. Also, has the playoff roster been released yet? Because I don’t think they would have Posada DH, Molina catch, unless they have Cervelli on the roster.

Johnny Damon will be AWESOME during the playoffs. I promise.

Anything less than awesome will result in us having one of our famous pretend discussions

    32 hours and 45 minutes until Game 1 :-)

  20. Fran (the original) and OPPC member October 6th, 2009 at 9:17 am

I think with the longer series and only using 3 starters the Yankees only need a 10 man pitching staff. Carrying 15 position players means Cervelli can get a spot. So if Molina does catch AJ, Posada can DH.

    Erica,

Think 1st pitch is 6:07 so add 7 minutes ;)

  25. Rex October 6th, 2009 at 9:31 am

    Mark:

If it’s the Tigers, I’m assuming Verlander in Game 2 on Friday and Porcello in Game 3 on Sunday. Matsui has had a little success with Verlander. Posada has not. Porcello has yet to get either guy out in his limited opportunities to do so.

No idea what the Twins do with Game 1. Either Blackburn on short rest or Duensing/Manship? I’d be confident in either guy’s ability to hit Blackburn/Baker/Pavano over Games 2 & 3.

he is promoting his radio show during the playoffs on mad dog radio. he said espn’s bronx is burning was a hatchet job, he’s letting howard wear his world series ring, a lot of goofing around about who is well endowed in the locker room. artie is ragging on a-rod. he also said he didn’t go to billy martin’s funeral. said he found out that when billy pulled him from the game in fenway billy had told people he was going to do something to embarass him the night before. pretty funny interview i feel like i missed a lot of it though.

  35. Fran (the original) and OPPC member October 6th, 2009 at 9:51 am

Just saw in the NY Post that the final ALDS rosters are due by midnight tonight. In the article Cashman said that 1 or 2 spots may be determined by the opponent. I would post a link but I don’t know how and every time I try I mess it up.

Erica, by the way there is also an article on Johnny.

  36. Doreen October 6th, 2009 at 10:00 am

I take his hits on Sunday as a sign that Johnny Damon is heating up. I’m not worried about Matsui.

Rick Porcello is a “local kid” here in NJ, so he got a nice feature article in the Newark Star Ledger today. Although the author couldn’t compliment Porcello without giving a dig to the Yankees about Chamberlain. C’est la vie. :)

So, I don’t know – I’m not rooting for either team today. But I guess it would be nice for New Jersey if Porcello has a nice outing.

You guys carried that conversation deep into the night last night. I was asleep by 10 pm. Trying to get the sleep in now so I’ll be okay when I’ll be on sleep deprivation as the Yankees get deeper into the playoffs (I hope!!).

Damon was raking the final game though. Johnny is a big game player and I think he will be ok.

You know what’s crazy… The two people that are not hot I wouldn’t want to face them in the playoffs.
