Wrapping up another workout

Chad Jennings
October
8

At one point this afternoon, I turned to Sam and asked if I should take a picture of the Yankees stretching and then post it to the blog with a note reading, “This is what happened today.”

Reality is, there wasn’t a lot going on during this afternoon’s workout at Yankee Stadium. We got some more comments about the Molina/Burnett/Posada triangle, but nothing outrageous. Posada said he’s not “jumping for joy” but seemed at peace with the whole thing, Molina said he’s happy to be playing and Joe Girardi said the decision is his and he’ll have to live with it. All of that seemed fair enough.

Girardi wouldn’t give us anything definitive about tomorrow’s lineup, but he strongly suggested Hideki Matsui will DH and Melky Cabrera will play center field. Barring some sort of Jerry Hairston shocker, that leaves the lineup fairly predictable.

I wish there were some sort of big, breaking news to report, but it’s probably best for the Yankees that today was a fairly quiet day at the stadium.

You can bet it will be loud again tomorrow.

    No news is good news

  2. betsy

Per Joe, Hughes would have stayed in for Mauer last night (yay!), but Coke was up in case Kubel came up……….

I love Jorge, but saying he’s not jumping for joy is a silly comment. Why say that at all? He’s unhappy, everyone knows he is…….but still.

Jose Molina would never say anything controversial – what the heck is ESPN thinking, if they are even thinking at all?

  3. betsy

Joe says you worry about an AJ/Jorge relationship later….he’s worried about now.

  4. jennifer

I don’t have a problem with him saying I’m not jumping for Joy. He’s honest. The media and some fans are making more out of this than their should be. I just hope all this nonsense doesn’t get in AJ’s head that he knows he better pitch well or they’ll be heck to pay.

  5. Chris

I’m really digging the multiple bloggers….Lohud please keep all the guys they are doing great!

Any one else stroll over to Pete’s new gig? The majority of his posts are about the Yankees. Its kinda funny, and he gets about 14 responses to each post. I love it!

  6. PittsburghYankeeFan

This Molina thing is all media blather. Give it a rest.

  7. Paco Dooley

Enough with the Molina situation already! How about some comments on the other series? I’m interested in everyone’s opinions about who the Yankees match up best against in the AL championship and the WS if they make it to either or both.

  8. The Ghost

jennifer, it’s not just in AJ’s head, judging from last night, it’s in Jorge’s head as well. Now watch it get into Molina’s head as well. Before all this is done the only player on the Yankees who’s head won’t be screwed up by this is Arod!

Arod [in the clubhouse before game 5]: “C’mon guys, it’s so simple, you hit the ball, you field the ball, you throw the ball, stop thinking so much and get out there and play!”

  9. Jones

Of course hes not happy, he wants to play, who doesn’t want to play? I’d be annoyed if he was absolutely okay with this decision. I still don’t understand whats the problem. Certain media networks like ESPN just loves to make something out of nothing.

  10. m

All three parties have dealt with it just fine. It’s the fans that can’t deal with it.

And I do like the fact that Molina said, “If Jorgie doesn’t like it that’s him. Go ask him about it.” Jose can only be accountable for himself.

RE: Pete. Help me out guys, when he was on LoHud did he post threads dedicated to players on other teams (besides Ichiro)?

  11. Doreen

    betsy -

I was going to check in on Pete every now and again, but now, I don’t think it will be a smart thing for me to do. I have a feeling I will get slightly upset. I know he’s a reporter and not a “fan,” but it seems so drastic and kind of, I don’t know, not right to switch sides like that so easily. It’s like one day you argue that the sky is blue and the next day, you argue it’s never been blue. Without missing a beat. Logically I understand – he writes for a paycheck. But I don’t have to read it.

He was so much in the Joba is too good to not be a starter camp. The way that sentence was worded makes Joba sound like an untalented lump. :(

I didn’t expect him to write pro-Yankee stuff. But I expected him to focus on pro-Red Sox, not anti-Yankee, you know what I mean?

(And I realize I sound naive here.)

  12. m

Oops. Forgot to add, wouldn’t his audience want to hear about the Red Sox players?

  13. betsy

Doreen, I know what you mean. Frankly, I never intended to check in as I don’t care what he has to say about the Red Sox; I’m not interested in Sox insider info. I’m disappointed in Pete, but so be it. I don’t have a problem that he went back to his roots, but he’s showing very little integrity by catering to his fanbase. Snide comments about Alex and Joba? Well, it’s no surprise about Alex, but he sure changed his tune about Joba. It doesn’t speak well of him, to be honest.

  14. Pete the Hypocrite

I heard rumblings of this before I left my old gig and now Joel Sherman of the New York Post is reporting that the Yankees are planning to keep Joba Chamberlain in the bullpen if they advance beyond the Division Series.

Chamberlain had mixed results against the Sox this season, going 2-1 in four starts with a 4.91 ERA. In 22 innings, he allowed 26 hits and struck out 24.

It’s a smart move for the Yankees. Chamberlain had a 7.75 ERA in his last 10 starts of the season. Chad Gaudin doesn’t scare anybody, but the Yankees were 6-0 in his starts and he posted a solid 3.43 ERA in 11 appearances overall.

The Yankees are surely cognizant that Gaudin has a 2.64 career ERA against Boston over 30.2 innings. It’s not much of a sample size, but at least there is something they can point to.

It’ll be interesting to see where this will leave Chamberlain come 2010. The pitcher Red Sox fans love to hate may be no better than a set-up man after all.

    m -

That’s what I would think. I suspect he doesn’t have as much “inside information” as he had here. He hasn’t been inside that clubhouse and he doesn’t know the players well, if at all. He hasn’t established his presence, or a comfort level. Plus he came from the “enemy.” Perhaps he has to establish in his blogs that he’s switched loyalties? That he knows the enemy and can expose them, so to speak? It’s going to be a little while before he is able to post mainly Inside the Red Sox based stuff.

    I don’t know.

that’s because Reggie just told Jorge what he used to do to Paul Blair’s jock strap when he took his place in right field.

  19. m

    saucY,

He’s not a beat writer? Really? I don’t know why I’m shocked by that. Something about priority in the ranks of the BBWAA? He told a funny story about Reggie Jackson or some other luminary not giving him the time of day after seeing his BBWAA number. :)

  20. jennifer

ghost- actually that is because Reggie told Jorge that he would put itching powder in Joses jock strap. Notice only Swisher and Jorge are laughing. :P

Why do I think the Globe hired Pete just so he could provide tidbits about the Yankees……and not because he’s a Pulitzer Prize winner? I liked Pete, I was sorry when he left, but now I’m glad he’s gone.

  23. saucY

m, i think i remember in his intro post over there that he’s there to ‘help out’ the beat writer Amelie Benjamin. i’ll see if i can find it…

  24. crawdaddy

I think some of you need to give Posada a break as the media is constantly coming up to him and asking him questions about this situation.

“Why do I think the Globe hired Pete just so he could provide tidbits about the Yankees……and not because he’s a Pulitzer Prize winner? I liked Pete, I was sorry when he left, but now I’m glad he’s gone.”

To be honest, I’m glad he’s gone too because though he created a great blog here, but he became a little too personal with certain poster here and was very thin-skinned.

That’s not true in all cases. I never congratulated him or wished him luck because I was glad he was gone. He lost me with his unveiled hatred of A-Rod. It all makes sense now though. He’s a BOS fan. Of course he hates A-Rod. I’m glad to have that cleared up.

    —————————————–

    Yup, they do.

I looked at his A-Rod post, and there were like 2 or 3 Sox fan who voiced their displeasure with seeing a post about A-Rod.

One fan said “hey, I thought we were playing the Angels, who cares about A-Rod.” Another fan said something like “instead of focusing on A-Rod, why don’t you concentrate on the problems that David Ortiz suffered through this season?”

So even some Red Sox fans are above Yankee bashing and would rather hear about their own team.

That blog is creepy, though. One would think it is a Yankees blog with all their Yankees game threads and Yankee updates. Clearly obsessed…

  39. saucY

    i still wish pete well

  40. Wave Your Hat

I personally am very appreciative of everything Pete did for this blog and wish him nothing but success in the future.

  42. Summer

One thing I really liked about Pete’s blogging is that he wasn’t always bringing us the big news (like the time he slept through the announcement of the Sabathia signing! haha). It was the little things he brought, like Mike Mussina getting the ice cream back in the clubhouse by winning 10 games, or AJ Burnett’s reaction to the music Nick Swisher was blaring, that made this blog really unique in the content it delivered. You’re doing a great job delivering the big news so far, but more of the little things would be cool, too. Just my two cents! :)

  43. Rex

“He’s a BOS fan. Of course he hates A-Rod.”

I’m an NYY fan and I don’t like Arod. Love his baseball skills and glad he’s using ‘em for the Yankees. Just don’t think he’s a good guy.

    saucy,
I feel like my team(the colts)have won 2 super bowls. The 06 one and the 19-0 psych Giants one.

Could Pete be under cover working for the Yankees still?

This Posada/Burnett/Molina soap opera is starting to get as much attention as

    -Clemens coming or going
    -Clemens on b-12
    -C.C. coming or going
-We are all crazy to think Tex is coming after C.C. signing.
-Arod the trader or is it Boras. Let Betimet play third.
-Pettitte isnt worth resigning, go after the moose.
-Joba is a starter vs. Joba the reliever
    -Gardner vs. Melky

I cant believe it went this far.

    For the record -

I am not turning on Pete. Just making a decision that I probably will not follow his blogging on a Boston blog. I 100% appreciate all the work he put in here. I fully understand why he moved on. I never went to the Boston blogs before, the only reason I contemplated going to visit the Globe was because of Pete. However, I do not have the stomach for anti-Yankee stuff. I avoid talk radio and television when I know it’s going to be anti-Yankee or switch the channel/station if it turns anti-Yankee. I love my team. I know it’s weaknesses and don’t mind discussing them with other fans. But I don’t have the stomach for “outsiders” dissing my Yankees!!

  48. Rex

“How would you know what type of guy he is? For all we know, Jeter might be a jerk. Don’t be fool by public personas as people are a lot different in private.”

I don’t, which is why it was expressed as my own feeling/opinion.

  50. RS

I wonder if it’s weird for the Cleveland Indians organization to see Sabathia, Lee, Martinez, Betancourt, Blake, and Francisco on playoff teams. That was like half their team a year ago.

  51. Doreen

And I still wish Pete well, by the way.

I really am miffed that you used my quote against me, Rex. I’m not a hypocrite. I am naive at times, but not a hypocrite.

    _______________________________________

Understood Doreen, but also know that’s Pete’s not turning on you or anyone else here. He’s not as you suggested “switching sides”. He made a move to improve his career. To paraphrase Michael Corleone “It’s business, Doreen, not personal”.

  55. crawdaddy

“I don’t, which is why it was expressed as my own feeling/opinion.”

Which is exactly what the other poster expressed which was their feeling/opinion, but that didn’t stop you from commenting on it.

  56. RS

    Doreen-

I completely agree with you. I only listen to sports radio talk after a Yankees win…the only place I can stomach after a loss is YES’s postgame, lol.

As for turning on Pete, well…he did go over to the Dark Side, so none of us should be obligated to continue supporting him. I was upset when I first heard the news that he was leaving, but now I’m extremely happy with Sam and the crew.

  62. Doreen

    Rex -

That’s why I said he writes for a paycheck. Logically, psychologically, I am smart enough to know it’s business.

But fandom is an emotional thing for me. And my reference to him “switching sides” is more to do with the slant of the writing than an actual thing. His point of view (writing) is different now.

The only thing is, I thought if I went there, the focus would be on the Red Sox and I could still enjoy his writing. But right now the focus has been on the Yankees, from that different point of view, and I don’t care to read it. That’s all.

A question for everyone on either side of the Posada/Molina discussion.

There are two pretty good catchers managing this team in game situations and watching the day to day activities – Girardi and Pena. We keep hearing that Pena is about as good as it gets as a catcher evaluator and coach.

Is this a decision Girardi would make without Pena’s concurrance, and if Pena is in synch with Girardi, are they seeing something in Jorge’s level of play that might be telling us something?

Backbench, good point. The collective experience of Girardi and Pena is most telling. They “know catching” and whether a catcher really has what it takes, particularly handling a given pitcher. In today’s Matsui’s article in “Sponichi,” a leading Japanese sports newspaper, there is an interesting story about Jeter and Matsui. Jeter called Matsui’s HR before the game, which was why Jeter was jumping around in the dugout in a cheer.

Jeter: “Matsu (That’s how he calls Matsui), you will hit a HR tonight. Trust me. You’ll see.”

Matsui said that being a Yankee for 7 years, Jeter had never said anything like that. Perhaps most Yankee players know this may be the last time to play with him as teammates.

    GB7,
Good to see you back. Hope everything is going well for you and the familia. Wanted your thoughts on Joba going to the pen and if he should stay there through out the playoffs or just this series. If he stays there. What do you do with him next year? Hughes?

Evening, S.o.S. (God, man, you gotta change that name. 35 years in the military and SoS only meant one thing.

Thanks for the words. everything’s going well. The twins are really getting into being Yankee fans. sidney wasn’t the problem. Anthony took some doing, though. I trained him to cry at pictures of Red Sox players. He didn’t understand it all until I showed the picture of Youkilis. Only problem was having to clean uo both ends. I guess I shouldn’t have given him pizza and beer before that, though. Hope all is well on your side.

oh yeah, i’ll take gb7 and me in a steel cage match with any two of the twenty somethings on the blog.

of course, once they watch me and gb7 go at it first they won’t want anything to do with either of us :)

I never liked Pete much. I liked how quick he was with his reporting and for the most part he did a good job with the blog. However, his bias opinions got in the way of his reporting. It was obvious and still is he hates A-Rod. He’s two faced like some have pointed it. I for one don’t miss his constant complaining about things such as: God Bless America in the 7th, the Final year countdown clock, the YMCA, the amount of home runs in the new stadium, the empty legions seats, A-Rod*, etc.

I really enjoy the new blog format and points of view because Pete got old. He complained more then anyone about a team that won 103 regular season games. I don’t follow him anymore, who cares what he says now. He’s gone and has shown the type of character he has. Good riddance Pete. LoHud got better replacements anyways.

Tak, cool story with Jeeter calling Matsui’s bomb but don’t read into that (Matsui’s leaving) being the reason for the prediction. For one Matsui had an AB against him in July where he walked, maybe he had some really good swings. Plus Matsui has the most HR’s against lefties in the league, so this wasn’t a very bold prediction. Not to mention he is way healthier than he has been in the last few years and had his most HR’s since 2004.

I think there is a very good chance that they bring him back on a 1 year with maybe a club option for a 2nd. He loves it here #1, #2 DH’ing has clearly agreed with him. #3 From what I hear he will only play for the NYY or go home to his original team in Japan (he is old school). #4 If they don’t sign Damon it’s a no brainer freeing up the DH spot that much more (I hope they bring both back BTW because you can give Matsui a few less games and use more as PH, like in interleague play this year, mixing in Damon more as DH plus rotating some of the older guys there as well).

Hey all! Today I am batting 333, hopefully it will be 667 soon if this score holds up, and I am hoping to be batting 1000 by the end of the night.

Randy, I decided that our series is the Carl Pavano karma series, the Dodger series is the Manny Ramirez karma series, and the Sux series is the David Ortiz Karma series. What do you think?

    :)

  138. Tak

    Mike,
Matsui has been telling Japanese reporters that he would like to stay in the US. His number 1 priority is to resign with the Yankees, but if not, he’ll act in his best interest; he’ll choose a team that makes him feel he’s wanted/needed. He doesn’t think there is any place for him in Japan’s NPB. In fact his former team, Yomiuri Giants just gave his number 55 to a rookie whom they believed to be as good as Matsui.

And he never, ever said that he’d retire after this season.

I don’t think Yanks will resign Matsui, but I strongly hope I’m wrong.
