ALDS Game 2: Twins at Yankees (Part Deux)

Posted by: Sam Borden - Posted in Misc on Oct 09, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

UPDATE, 8:18 p.m.: The Yankees and Twins are going to the seventh and we’re going to a new thread. Keep it going.

UPDATE, 8:21 p.m.: Tolbert left the game with a strained left oblique. He’s day to day.

UPDATE, 8:24 p.m.: Think Chuck Meriwether prefers Molina to Posada also? Ouch.

UPDATE, 8:26 p.m.: Joba out, Phil Coke in to face Kubel. Hughes up, with Robertson alongside in the pen.

UPDATE, 8:31 p.m.: Chad here. That slider makes all the difference for Coke. It’s the reason he went from a forgotten prospect to pitching in a huge spot in the ALDS.

UPDATE, 8:42 p.m.: Huuuuuuuughes coming in. Cuddyer, Young, Gomez due up.

UPDATE, 8:44 p.m.: Justin Tuck in the house tonight.

UPDATE, 8:54 p.m.: Apparently Brendan Harris is a hidden gem; second hit tonight and it’s first and third for Punto. Big spot for Hughes.

UPDATE, 8:58 p.m.: Soft curveball from Hughes gets taken right up the middle and it’s 2-1 Twins. Girardi not wasting any time and going right to Rivera to try and keep the score where it is.

UPDATE, 9:04 p.m.: Nothing doing. Rivera gives up a run, too, and suddenly it’s 3-1 with the Yankees down to six outs.

UPDATE, 9:28 p.m.: Down two in the ninth and Tex gets his first hit of the series. Can A-Rod do it once more?

UPDATE, 9:31 p.m.: HE CAN! An absolute bomb and he knew it right away – dropped his bat and pumped his fist to the dugout while the ball was still in the air. 3-3, the Stadium is rocking and Nathan is on the ropes. Can they finish it right here?

UPDATE, 9:39 p.m.: Nope. Cano grounds out. I’d say that was a “Yankee moment” for Alex, though, no? Aceves coming on for the 10th.

UPDATE, 9:57 p.m.: Girardi is a genius: That third catcher on the roster is looking pretty good right now.

UPDATE, 10:04 p.m.: Total meltdown by Nathan. Damon coming up with a chance to win it.

UPDATE, 10:09 p.m.: And an even worse mistake by Gardner. Where’s he going there?

    the big problem joba has with golf is he keeps overruling his caddy.

  24. Nick in SF October 9th, 2009 at 8:24 pm

    Posada knows when to let ‘em get past him. Take that, ump! :evil:

  25. Joe from Long Island October 9th, 2009 at 8:24 pm

    I’m listening to John and Suzyn.

    Suzyn is saying that Joba claims that in the relief role, he doesn’t have to think, just throws what Jorge calls for. Well, shades of Nuke LaLoush! Why in heck doesn’t young Master Joba listen to Yoda Posada all the time?! Why think about it too much?

    Like Crash Davis said, “Don’t think – it can only hurt the team.”

    (And I’m a Joba fan who feels he should start.)

    Good call Girardi. Lefties can handle Kubel (if they can throw strikes)

  34. GreenBeret7 October 9th, 2009 at 8:26 pm

    As long as they keep Mauer hitting them on the ground, he’s not hitting homers.

  35. CB October 9th, 2009 at 8:26 pm

    This is a very different Alex Rodriguez. He has looked phenomenal for three months.

    He is putting one good swing after another after another on balls. He has almost no holes at the plate.

    His swing is now so consistently short now that he’s widened his base and reduced his timing mechanics leg kick.

    The only times Alex struggles is when his swing gets long and/ or tries to do too much at the plate. That’s what’s happened to him in the playoffs. His swing has gotten very long the past few off seasons.

    But that’s just not he case right now. HIs swing is compact and the bat travels to the ball with tremendous efficiency.

    He is going to have a very good post season. You could see it in that first at bat he had yesterday when he drove the ball with authority to right field in a two strike count.

  36. DT - OPPC member (blood type - Positive) October 9th, 2009 at 8:26 pm

    at least Joba didn’t walk him – throwing strikes is a good sign.

  37. MG October 9th, 2009 at 8:26 pm

    Joba is throwing 95-96 out of the ‘pen this year but in 2007 he was 97-99. He’s definitely lost something on his fastball in the last 2 years.

  38. randy l. October 9th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

    “posada, you are horible….if im an ump, i do the pitch calling from the side of home plate”

    mac duddy-

    you’ve ragged on jeter, now your on posada. pettitte isn’t pitching, but maybe you’ll get a chance to rag on mo.

    you’re just ticked off because the yankees tied up the game.

  39. Chuck Knoblauch October 9th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

  41. Vader October 9th, 2009 at 8:28 pm

  42. GreenBeret7 October 9th, 2009 at 8:28 pm

    Ouch. Twins defense at third just took a big hit. Tolbert out with an injured back.

  43. Uke October 9th, 2009 at 8:28 pm

    Joba hit 97, his mechanics need some time to readjust to being in the bullpen, once he gets his legkick back alittle more etc he’ll get back to the 98 consistently

  44. djsunyc October 9th, 2009 at 8:28 pm

    This is so not fair. I am in my home office right now. because I discovered that the Yankees do well only if the game is on the television, but I’m not in the room to see it. Earlier I as in the family room with the TV, but doing a combination of muting, flipping, and watching. No go. So, when Tex missed the HR and then popped up, I left the room.

    So, am I supposed to continue throughout at least this game if not the entire playoffs, doomed to barely hear and not see a game??? To watch through highlights?

    Pat M,,

    Alex’s ability to generate bat speed without relying on his arms is just amazing. It always has been.

    But now that he’s keeping his swing short, that ability to generate bat speed through his hips is creating a very different kind of hitter. One who almost can’t be pitched to because he has no holes.

    It’s remarkable watching Alex and Tex hit because their swings are so different. As great as Tex is, he just doesn’t come close to having Alex’s ability.

  290. Josh October 9th, 2009 at 8:58 pm

    ok now the question becomes why didn’t you bring in Mariano for Punto – there were two outs…Girardi will have to answer for this in his post-game if The Yankees lose.

  291. Matt K October 9th, 2009 at 8:58 pm

    That was not a curveball..it was a hanging slider. Hughes’ curve is 12 to 6..that went from like 2 to 7.

  292. Damon should go, not matsui October 9th, 2009 at 8:58 pm

  302. Jeremy October 9th, 2009 at 8:59 pm

    You don’t go with your third pitch. You go with your two best pitches.

  303. MG October 9th, 2009 at 8:59 pm

    that’s why the curve ball isn’t a good choice there, Punto couldn’t catch up with the fast ball-a cutter inside probably would have worked better.

    They’ve come back all year, tonight is just another time to do it.

  304. qiantom October 9th, 2009 at 8:59 pm

    Hughes cannot live with one pitch.

  305. KO October 9th, 2009 at 8:59 pm

  306. Steve October 9th, 2009 at 8:59 pm

  311. RS October 9th, 2009 at 9:00 pm

    I don’t know if I’m reading too much into this, but does Posada ever call for an inside pitch? It seems like in every important AB, the entire sequence is away, away, away. It makes it all the more frustrating because it looks like the hitters can just zone in to one part of the plate, which is an automatic advantage for them.

  312. daver October 9th, 2009 at 9:00 pm

    The walk killed us. And the breaking ball to Punto.

  313. djsunyc October 9th, 2009 at 9:00 pm

  345. CB October 9th, 2009 at 9:02 pm

    It’s not simply the pitch call. It’s the pitch. The pitcher must execute the pitch.

    Hughes hung his curve ball.

    But the story of this game tonight was the iron law of probability.

    Yankee pitchers played with fire all night.

    AJ got bailed out by Gomez’s stupidity.

    growing pains for the young hughes. it’s ok tho…the game and series are far from over.

    a short 5 game series is very dangerous…that’s why i never dismissed the twins – anyone can win 3 of 5…especially when the 2 middle games are at your own house.

  456. Michael T October 9th, 2009 at 9:12 pm

    Questec is going to be hating on Merriweather tonight. He made about a dozen blatantly bad calls in pretty big spots in the past 3 innings. And then inexplicably squeezed Hughes on the same pitches.

  459. Donnie - Will Meet Chuck Meriwhether Under the O'Neill Banner October 9th, 2009 at 9:12 pm

    When the Twins have 10 players on the field at any given time, and one of them is the home plate umpire, it’s really kind of hard to get anything going.

    His strike calls have been inconsistent, and just flat out wrong. Two of the strikes to Melky were nowhere NEAR the zone, and those same pitches were balls to Gomez.

    And that’s just two ABs. You wonder why they’re taking crappy swings? Because they’re having the bats taken out of their hands by a man who can’t be bothered to do his job and call the game properly. When a ball 6 inches off the plate is going to be called a strike anyway, you have to swing at it.

    Chuck Meriwhether should probably go home, watch where some of these “strikes” are, and then quit his job and move to a third-world country where no one ever has to look at him screw up calls ever again.

  460. The Ghost October 9th, 2009 at 9:12 pm

    Blame the media for making Girardi force Posada’s bat into this game asap. Should have had Gardner pinch hit for Molina to lead off the sixth.

  461. CB October 9th, 2009 at 9:12 pm

    “Can’t expect to walk 6 and hit 2 and not give up runs. Two of three runs were attributed to walks”

    That’s the story of this game so far.

    The game is far from over.

    But this game has been about yankee pitchers walking too many hitters.

    People are going to focus on Punto’s hit – but it was the walk to gomez that was the disaster in that inning.

    It was the walk that killed Hughes. He had two outs and a series of horrible offensive players coming to bat.

    And he walked a guy who has no bat at all and can run like the wind.

  462. Yankee Trader October 9th, 2009 at 9:12 pm

  465. Steve October 9th, 2009 at 9:13 pm

    We are useless unless we hit a damn homer. Where the heck is the offense tonight. Twins can do small things to win games. That is why they are so tough. We get in trouble all night after we get two outs on them. We walk a guy and the next thing you know they are knocking on the door.

    Mo has to get 3 quick outs and then we need to get some runs and the pie

    Brendan Harris does not win u titles. THat is nonsense. The guy is mediocre, he is having the game of his life. Even if the Yankees lose this one, is it really a big deal? Overall they still have a much better team than the Twins. The Yankees were a good road team this year. It’s about who gets to 3 wins first. It’s not like if u were predicted to sweep and u don’t sweep, u lose the series. U have to be the first team to win 3 games, period. Even with a loss tonight the Yankees would not panic, not even close.

    The twins do the small things tonight to win, like getting tagged out after overrunning 2nd to take a run off the board? No, its one big thing they did tonight and that is NOT WALKING DUDES ALL OVER THE PLACE! Its particularly weak when the ump is giving two inches high and several off the plate.

  492. jake October 9th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

    The hitting has been horrible…and pitching has been wayyy to wild, way too many walks! They are lucky the lead is this close. It’s going to take a sudden change in offense for them to win this game..

    I think the story of this game is that the Yanks are just off their game tonight. Blackburn changes speeds so well that they confused at the plate. Lots of walks and it’s tough to win a game with only three hits, it hasn’t been Yankee Baseball so far. Got to give the Twins the nod for some clutch hits. Absent a walkoff it’s going to be a best two of three and I hope the bats reawaken at the homerdome.

    We’re in serious trouble. I have no confidence in going to Minnesota tied at 1. This is an exact copy of our other crappy postseasons lately.

    ———————–

    You can do it. Climb over rail. Jump!”

    Honestly, how can you possibly feel different if you’ve watched this team over the last couple of years. Whether you want to accept it or not, this team is no different. Dumb managerial decisions, bad fielding and an offense that disappears in the big playoff games.

  517. gusb October 9th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

    Blame the media for making Girardi force Posada’s bat into this game asap. Should have had Gardner pinch hit for Molina to lead off the sixth.

    Blame Posada’s whining for making Girardi force Posada’s bat into this game asap. He lost this game for us nobody else. The lead runs came once he was in the game.

    Whenever I read the posts, I get nuts. No way is this team even remotely like post-2001 playoff teams. These are major leaguers! Do we think MN is going to roll over? If we can’t split or sweep in MN we don’t deserve to win. Unless everyone wants to be a mush, think positive!!

  520. Darrin October 9th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

    “Didn’t the Yankees lose the first TWO games of a series against the Twins one year and come back to win the next 3 – two of them in the dome?”

    No.

  521. Rocco October 9th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

    You can see it now… Pavano, who has pitched very well against us, in a rocking loud Metrodome shutting us down, despite Andy pitching a good game.

    And by that point, MIN has all the momentum and we press against Scott Baker while the Twins grind out a few runs against CC.

    Then bam… a repeat of 2006. Not good at all… the 5 game series are all about momentum.

    If we lose this game, Pavano better be out by the third inning, when was the last time a Yankee lineup absolutely destroyed a starter in the playoffs i don’t remember. And its not like we deserve to win this game with our 3 hits and 1 run!!! this team should be able to muster 3 runs against the twins and Blackburn and company

  527. Michael T October 9th, 2009 at 9:20 pm

    No more runs! If we can bring the winning run to the plate in the 9th I predict snatching a victory.

  528. YankeeJosh October 9th, 2009 at 9:20 pm

    Even if the Yankees lose today, you have to like the chances of winning at least a game in the Metrodome. Does anyone expect Pavano to come up big Sunday? And even if the Twins beat Pettitte, CC goes Monday in game 4. The Yanks should win a game, which brings you back to game 5 in the Bronx.

    Game surely isn’t over yet, but a loss tonight, while disappointing is hardly devastating.

  543. Rose October 9th, 2009 at 9:23 pm

    Umpire behind the plate stinks. He has screwed both teams.

    Girardi changing pitchers like this is a World Series game 7.

    Bases on balls will kill you.

    AJ would last a lot longer in games if he had good control. He walks way too many batters. Frustrating to watch AJ walking and hitting batters.

  544. Ranger October 9th, 2009 at 9:23 pm

    This is why the 5 game series is a huge detriment. Now look.. the Twins are going back home with all the momentum. Our 103 great regular season is about to go up in smoke. Very few teams recover from games like this. In the regular season, it doesn’t matter… you lose a series, you move on. There’s also no pressure to win the series in the regular season. Now it is completely different.

    We should have known the bats falling asleep would be our downfall again.

  545. JZ October 9th, 2009 at 9:23 pm

    Pavano will give up 4 runs in 5 innings.

  546. CR9 October 9th, 2009 at 9:23 pm

    This team is like every other year’s team.

    If given a fair chance to win, they will win. This game is not on the Yankees if they do end up losing. Tonight, we have not been given a fair shake, and I would much rather be cheated twice on the bases with 2 outs and nobody on as the Sox were last night than 20 times via the strike zone.

  562. RS October 9th, 2009 at 9:25 pm

    We can talk about how horrible that walk to Gomez was, but how about the offense? If someone told you the Yankees would only have 1 run going into the 9th inning, would you have killed the pitching staff for not having the lead?

    Hughes should have gotten Gomez out, but who knows how long the offense would have gone without scoring another run? Maybe Marte would have given up a HR in the 10th inning, you never know. Bottom line is, the offense needs to score more than 1 run in a HOME GAME against this Twins pitching staff.

  563. JZ October 9th, 2009 at 9:25 pm

    if Sox wins tonight, all of sudden they, a wild card team, have home field advantage. The system is a joke.

    seriously, why bother to win division as long as u can get in?

  564. Steve October 9th, 2009 at 9:26 pm

    Difference is this game is the number of walks and HBP we gave up. We set up innings with walks and hit batsman and then twins delivered big hits.

    Our offense did nothing through 8 innings. Twins did not put themselves in danger with walks and they did not fall behind in counts (partly with the help of MErriweather)

  565. Darrin October 9th, 2009 at 9:26 pm

    The only way this team can prove that they ARE different than the most recent Yankee teams is for them to go into Minnesota and win.

    If they don’t win it here in the 9th, they are set up exactly like the 2002 and 2006 teams that lost game 2 at home. Those teams went out MEEKLY on the road in Anaheim and Detroit. I’m looking for some fight and killer instinct in Minnesota.

  566. Mike October 9th, 2009 at 9:26 pm

    Isn’t it funny how the last 2 times in the playoffs, we had 2 different lights out setup men that didn’t lose a game all year as a reliever, and in both cases, they lost both us game 2 in the 8th inning?

    My bad, but in 2003, the Yankees did finish off the division series by winning 2 in the dome. I don’t understand why anyone thinks that place holds any home field advantage for the Twins against the Yankees. It’s not like Anaheim, the Yankees have consistently won there.

    So my wife, who follows baseball and the Yankees just to humor me, is packing for a business trip Monday, and has the small TV on in the bedroom. FINALLY harris is retired. If u think about it, Harris has pretty much single handedly kept the Twins in this game. That RBI triple, the big 2 out hit in the rally that got the Twins their 2 other runs, and then that huge diving stop on Jeter’s would be double down the line. Heroic performance from that guy, and if the Yanks can survive this one, man that would be nice

    Both times (the 8th and 10th), the walks should not have happened if the umpire had any consistency. Borderline pitches were called balls, when the batter should have been rung up.

    Yet, Melky and Posada were both rung up on pitches in the same location.

    Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if you could find it in Taiwanese and Hakkanese too.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Well, sure the TV station broadcasting live has the same two announcers for every game, but they don’t know the boys as well as our NY announcers. Also, sometimes they just repeat (late) what the YES/FOX/TBS guys are saying…At other times, it’s just not interesting, I’ll be honest.
    Good thing Damason “Sean Henn” Marte is pitching in one of the biggest innings of the season. Honestly Joe. Go with your best here. Mauer hits everyone and Marte has maybe looked go against 3 batters all season. I would rather have Bruney on the roster.
  1351. jojo October 9th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
    Marte is total garbage. He shouldn’t even be on the postseason roster. The guy hasn’t been reliable at ANY POINT since we traded for him. He should be at home right now. Two lefties, ur only job, and both of them reach. Mauer actually got two hits in one at bat against him. What a job Damaso. Brilliant
    OK, I now really believe that this is the Yankees’ night, the Twins have blown too many chances for it to be their night. So I really think we win it in the bottom of his ining.
  1424. matt October 9th, 2009 at 10:27 pm
    in the words of jerry seinfeld:
    “i am speechless. i am without speech.”
    LETS DO IT
  1426. Steve October 9th, 2009 at 10:27 pm
    I never expected us to prevent them from scoring with bases loaded and no outs. Now we have to get the walk off hit here. We have 3-4-5. Come on guys. Work counts and get on base any way possible
  1451. Yankee44 October 9th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
    They HAVE TO make a “Got pie?” Yankees shoirt. They’ll make a mint off that one ;)
  1452. YankeesLuv October 9th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
    It’s sort of like the regular season isn’t it? Tex starts off slow and Arod shows up and gets rolling and then boom Tex is off. Awesome, I love those two! :)
  1453. Pov October 9th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
    Man did he get around on that ball, I was afraid it was going to hook like the other one.
  1454. Ed - campaigning for Josh Willingham (it worked for Gaudin) October 9th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
    Mark Teixiera just became a Yankee!
  1455. Michael T October 9th, 2009 at 10:37 pm
    If the Yanks had blown it, haters would be chalking up Arod’s bomb as another stat-padding, meaningless homer in another post season FAIL.
  1456. The Phranchise October 9th, 2009 at 10:44 pm
    How awesome is seeing Cervelli’s reaction in all the highlights, jumping in the bullpen and signalling to the fans with Arod’s homer. His reaction with Robertson’s big pitch. I love Molina, but this kid will fit in easily and has a little more bat.
  1457. Mauershouldhavescored October 9th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
    Another way to keep big market teams in the postseason? Have the refs make poor calls. Way to go line judge, way to go. Suck it Yanks!
    Lmao, he had to change his post because he doesn’t even follow baseball enough to realize there are no “refs”
  1461. Matt K October 9th, 2009 at 10:50 pm
    And line judge? No it’s called the OUTFIELD UMPIRE..their are no judges, no refs..this isn’t soccer.
  1462. Gmanfl October 9th, 2009 at 11:19 pm
    Mauer dude.!!! How else should baseball be decided? Should we be a communist society? All team should win??? Everyone gets an orange at the break
