ALDS Game 2: Twins at Yankees (Part III)

Posted by: Sam Borden - Posted in Misc on Oct 09, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

UPDATE, 10:14 p.m.: Big break for the Yankees there as Mauer should have had a double. Phil Cuzzi – whose only job is to call balls fair or foul – missed that one by a mile. Mauer singled anyway, but the Twins should have a man on second and none out.

UPDATE, 10:22 p.m.: Hey look! A line drive and the runners just went back to their bases!

UPDATE, 10:23 p.m.: This is magic stuff from Robertson. Two-thirds of the way there.

UPDATE, 10:26 p.m.: Wow. Just wow. Robertston was in Dr. Andrews’s office a month ago. Now he’s getting out of the biggest spots you can imagine. Amazing.

    Marte is gonna blow this…

I’m replaying a triple play in my head over and over. IT BETTER HAPPEN.

    Come on Yankees!!!!

  4. Rudy October 9th, 2009 at 10:17 pm

Why is Marte on the roster if he can’t get lefties?

  5. Brandon Awesome "BECAUSE I'M AWESOME!" October 9th, 2009 at 10:18 pm

This sucks, comebacks aren’t easy, we squander it in the 10th….this is not going to be a good sleep night for me.

  6. Eric October 9th, 2009 at 10:18 pm

It’s really going to hurt when we lose this one

  7. MIL October 9th, 2009 at 10:18 pm

Wow, Marte gave up 3 hits to his 2 batters – awesome!

  8. Rudy October 9th, 2009 at 10:18 pm

D-Rob is going to K the side.

  9. Donnie - Will Meet Chuck Meriwhether Under the O'Neill Banner October 9th, 2009 at 10:18 pm

I honestly do not care if Damaso Marte ever throws another pitch for us. He’s terrible. He made this roster over Bruney because of the Twins abundance of lefties. His only job is to get out left-handers.

Instead, he puts them both on. He is worthless, and should be discarded as soon as humanly possible.

  10. YankeeJosh October 9th, 2009 at 10:18 pm

Bad job by Melky playing that ball too.

Baffled as to why Girardi took out Aceves after just one inning. You pitch your best in the post-season, especially with an off-day.

  11. DT - OPPC member (blood type - Positive) October 9th, 2009 at 10:18 pm

Robertson can get a K. They need one.

  12. Mark-Cant Touch This October 9th, 2009 at 10:19 pm

Time for some strike out D-ROB strikes, strikes, strikes

  13. 100 pitches of fun... October 9th, 2009 at 10:19 pm

Marte is a such a joke

  14. djsunyc October 9th, 2009 at 10:19 pm

oh my goodness…that baserunning blunder by gardner was just wow…and now marte…

this is a crazy spot for robertson’s first postseason spot…

i don’t think i’ve ever seen a call that bad in my life…

  15. Kristen October 9th, 2009 at 10:19 pm

Joe’s overmanaging is killing me. In the bleachers and by our count there’s only Gaudin left in the bullpen. Are we wrong?

  16. terpbomber October 9th, 2009 at 10:19 pm

Where’s Bruney when ya need him?

  17. Brandon Awesome "BECAUSE I'M AWESOME!" October 9th, 2009 at 10:19 pm

D-Rob wasn’t even warmed up for this. Remember Wedensday.

  18. lets go yankees (formerly lets go twins) October 9th, 2009 at 10:20 pm

Good thing Damason “Sean Henn” Marte is pitching in one of the biggest innings of the season. Honestly Joe. Go with your best here. Mauer hits everyone and Marte has maybe looked good against maybe 3 batters all season. I would rather have Bruney on the roster.

Honestly, what has he done to deserve pitching there, let alone being on the roster. Is it his 9.45 ERA. I guess reputation defies logic

  19. dave October 9th, 2009 at 10:20 pm

I still can’t believe how hard it seems for Yankee hitters to lift the ball when there is someone on 3rd

  20. Carl October 9th, 2009 at 10:20 pm

    Huge spot for the kid

  21. m October 9th, 2009 at 10:20 pm

    nice curve. nice miss.

  22. rconn23 October 9th, 2009 at 10:20 pm

Girardi’s fixation on Marte is mind boggling. He hasn’t been an effective pitcher in two years.

  23. DW October 9th, 2009 at 10:20 pm

    Come on, Robertson!!

  24. Tarheelyank October 9th, 2009 at 10:20 pm

You are correct. They have used everyone but Gaudin

  27. Mark-Cant Touch This October 9th, 2009 at 10:21 pm

I think Marte is done for the rest of the Post season, he better be done.

  28. Rose October 9th, 2009 at 10:21 pm

Why the heck wasn’t Aceves left in the game? He can pitch multiple innings, get lefties and righties out, and you take him out for Marte.

  29. djsunyc October 9th, 2009 at 10:21 pm

damon needs to be called out on that at bat too…terrible job by him…

  30. Carl October 9th, 2009 at 10:21 pm

Why would you go with the curve. Go with the fastball !

  36. Serf October 9th, 2009 at 10:21 pm

Bases loaded. Nobody out. David Robertson can do this. He’s done it before.

  37. Yankees got a HIT! Yay... October 9th, 2009 at 10:21 pm

Ok, now this is over. We have to have big games in minnesota. Only MO could get out of this. And that was 8 years ago

  38. The Other Phil October 9th, 2009 at 10:22 pm

Girardi was limited in what he could do. Aceves sat too long and MN had 2 lefties coming up. Marte has to do his job and he didn’t do it.

  39. Mark-Cant Touch This October 9th, 2009 at 10:22 pm

Imagine if Aceves started the top of the 11th and not marte.

I forgot what a roller coaster these games are.. ARGH!

  41. randy l. October 9th, 2009 at 10:22 pm

okay we need a pop up or a strike out.

  42. Barrows October 9th, 2009 at 10:22 pm

I really would love to not see Marte pitch again in 2009. I got scared Girardi was going to take out another pitch when I saw him run out there.

The twins can’t squander opportunities all night, we can’t keep doing this.

  43. RS October 9th, 2009 at 10:22 pm

Why was Aceves taken out?? I don’t understand it. This isn’t how Girardi managed in the regular season. Tie game in extra innings ALWAYS = Aceves for multiple innings. Why rush to go to Marte?

  44. Damon should go, not matsui October 9th, 2009 at 10:22 pm

    Girardi is a freaking moron.

Congratulations to Gardenhire and his Twins. They are a great young group of scrappers.

  198. Heyya October 9th, 2009 at 10:33 pm

    What an absolutely amazing game.

The Yankees pitching sucked, the Yankees hitting sucked, yet they got the big pitch, the big out, the big inning when needed. This team grinded their way through this win, what an amazing win and game.

Too bad for Pete, he would have enjoyed blogging this, and seeing his comments erupt.

Yes, it’s the curse of Pete Abe!

Got news Yankee fans, that sort of pitching won’t get it done against the Rally Monkeys or the Sawx. Yes, it doesn’t help when the strike zone changes batter to batter as it did tonight, but nonetheless it won’t get it done. OK, let this be the bad pitching game.

Joe made a mistake taking Marte. OK, it happens. Hopefully we’ll only see Marte in blowouts from now on. The guy’s the second coming of Tom Gordon. I’d rather have a knunkleballing right handed granny face Mauer than Marte right now.

All he is doing right now is helping his team win a title and shutting people up left and right. I sure hope he keeps his focus and keeps playing like this. He has stepped up to the plate when it counts. So nice to see cuz he’s always had the talent, just hasn’t had the results in the playoffs. He’s more carefree now than ever. This game changed when Joe hit the panic button on AJ’S 1 and only run.Posada felt entitled to be in every postseason game and Joe gave in,and almost lost this game.

I’ve lost respect for Posada,it’s suppose to be what’s best for the team, not pacify a catcher!

Joe PULLED AJ out faster than he ever pulled Joba, when he was throwing away the game.

This game was unneedlessly stressful, because of Posada me me attitude!

  269. Blackaccord October 9th, 2009 at 10:47 pm

In all fairness the twins didnt even come out and argue that foul ball call.. At full speed it was close with Melky running to catch it.. Even if Mauer was on 2nd, whats the guarantee that Twins would get 3 straight hits after that or the yanks wouldnt have walked kubel to keep the double play in order ?? You cant say that one call determined the whole game..

  273. A-Rod = no longer mental in the playoffs October 9th, 2009 at 10:48 pm

Uh, Alex had 2 game tying hits, one in the 9th inning for a home run against Joe Nathan with our backs against the wall. A-Rod gets the belt.

BTW, Yanks haven’t won a title with a republican in office since 1958. That was another reason I was happy Obama got elected. It freed up a chance for the Yanks for this year

This game changed when Joe hit the panic button on AJ’S 1 and only run.Posada felt entitled to be in every postseason game and Joe gave in,and almost lost this game.

    ————–

AJ was at 95 pitches. He was probably coming out soon anyway.

    Here’s a bit of craziness:

3 children. 2 of them twins.

The (human) twins have their jewish coming of age on ALCS Game 3 — the last good day for Yankee playoff baseball.

The 3rd child has his bar-mitzvah pre-season of this year. The Yankees have 105 wins, and might finally be headed back to the ALCS (and hopefully beyond.) Crazy stuff.

  279. Yanks_Fan October 9th, 2009 at 10:49 pm

Congrats to most of us, real Yankees fans, for not giving up on the team when they trailed by two runs in the 9th inning and everyone was even declaring the Yanks losers of the series.

This win goes to all of us, real Yankees fans!

yeah, but I like the idea of Arod continuing to fly under the radar. I hope he stays humble. That has been working so well for him. The new Arod doesn’t get too high or too low.

(if you really got that hat!)

I know I’m way behind, but:

“Girardi is a genius: That third catcher on the roster is looking pretty good right now.”

No. If he was a genius, he wouldn’t have started Jose-effing-Molina.

  287. Erica - always OPPC October 9th, 2009 at 10:50 pm

I think us fans (the real ones) are the players of the game for never losing faith during that craziness.

That game was brutal, but we came out on the right end of it

  288. vtyankeefan-the original!! October 9th, 2009 at 10:50 pm

sweet win, there is no quit on this team. Arod has exorcised the playoff demon, Burnett pitched his way out of trouble at least twice. Pettitte will finish the sweep on Sunday against our old buddy Carl Pavano. Sweet justice!!

  290. pat October 9th, 2009 at 10:51 pm

    Team win.

AJ pitched well, good play by Swish and Jete, big hit by Alex, good pitching by Robertson, big hit by Tex.

They are playing with so much confidence it’s amazing to watch

  291. CR9 October 9th, 2009 at 10:52 pm

What a job by Robertson. Sure, he got lucky that the balls were hit right at people. But the key thing was to go in there and throw strikes and let whatever was going to happen, happen. He could not fall behind hitters, although Delmon and Carlos swung at the 1st pitch.

  292. m October 9th, 2009 at 10:52 pm

I was surprised that AJ came out in a tie game. Surprised that Aceves came out of a tie game when he can go more than one inning.

Lots of things that weren’t supposed to happened. But the Yankees came out on top.

  293. RS October 9th, 2009 at 10:52 pm

In just 2 playoff games, here’s what the “newcomers” have done already:

    Sabathia: 1-0 1.35 ERA
    Burnett: 0-0 1.50 ERA
    Teixeira: walkoff HR
    Swisher: game-winning (technically) RBI double

    And Arod:
    .500 AVG 5 RBI, game-tying 9th inning HR

Kevin S. just proved he is a moron. Burnett gets to throw 6 innings of 1 run ball which he might not have done with Posada. Molina only gets one AB and Posada gets the majority. Perfect scenario.

This has to be a crushing defeat for the Twins…we’ve walked off against them 4 times, now, this season. I wonder if they even want to come back to the NYS for game 5.

    They aren’t getting the chance

    ————————————————————

If they weren’t crushed by the losses earlier this year, they won’t be crushed by this. Shaken a bit, but, not crushed.

  299. haiku-man October 9th, 2009 at 10:53 pm

The belt needs to go to the new Mr clutch Alex.He got the team back in the game with the 2 runs. Those 2 runs caused xtra innings.

    Marte is scary.

    AJ and Molina were a great combo,only 1 run,wow.

Phil has spoiled me,I’m not in the habit of seeing him give up runs.

So is this 52 come from behind wins ,and 16 wallk offs now?

  300. djsunyc October 9th, 2009 at 10:53 pm

david cone is using just for men…he’s been hanging out with john flaherty too much…

  301. Betsy October 9th, 2009 at 10:53 pm

Ralphie, I taped the game, but only the first two and a half hours, so I won’t get a chance to watch Robertson’s Houdini act……..

Did the Twins get messed out of a run or two? I can’t quite allow myself to feel the incredible joy I should because I hate winning on bad calls…..

That said, the Yankees have always been a good road team. I’m not afraid of them playing anywhere

  302. Aura October 9th, 2009 at 10:54 pm

Kevin-S, are you kidding? Pretty much all of Minny’s runs were scored when Jorge was behind the plate. Face it, Jose and Francisco are stud pitch callers, Jorges a very good hitter.

  303. m October 9th, 2009 at 10:54 pm

AJ went 6 innings and Jorge still had 3 times as many at-bats as Jose. Let it go…

  304. Paul V October 9th, 2009 at 10:54 pm

woke up at 4am in a hotel in paris in the marais. one bar of wifi on the iPhone. hit the MLB app and listen to the last two innings of an absolutely unreal Yankee game. thank you, steve jobs.

    two thoughts:

I agree with the tex/arod = best 1,2 since gehrig ruth. been saying that, myself for a while.

marte MUST be canned after this series.

I was at a client’s office in Mt. Vernon today – about 10-15 min from the Stadium. I considered trying to get a ticket last minute. This was an AMAZING game – would’ve been great to attend!

It must be pretty satisfying for Chad to be able to see players that he’s covered down in Scranton come up big for the big ball club in the majors.

  309. Doreen October 9th, 2009 at 11:01 pm

Hey, so much for the off days so the BP could stay sharp, huh? :)

You can only plan so much. Girardi had the right guys all lined up, but the still have to execute. But Joba did okay, Coke, Ace were okay, and what can you say about Robertson?

The Twins didn’t win this one, one where they really pushed and pushed. The Yankees bent, but didn’t break.

Coney & Kay are saying the “experiment” was successful (AJ & Jose), but I’m not sure. You really don’t know how good the other pitcher is going to be. Tonight the guy matched the zeros with AJ.

  310. Rath October 9th, 2009 at 11:04 pm

Wow, Yankees.. How much did that blatantly obvious BAD CALL cost you?

  311. Joe from Long Island October 9th, 2009 at 11:05 pm

So very many story lines here –

    1. What a win!
    2. Alex getting co many clutch hits. What a home run!
    3. Great play by Swish and Derek.
    4. David Robertson, after his elbow scare, having the courage to stand in. Even more so in contrast to Joe Nathan.
    5. I really respect Ron Gardenhire and the job he does without the greatest talent. But he can only do so much. Not only Gomez (with the baserunning and not taking any pitches against DRob there in the 11th), but not having Nathan at his best against the Yanks.
    6. What’s with the umpires? Not only Merriwhether, but that clearly blown call down the foul line?
    7. Yeah, Minny got screwed by that call, but they had the bases loaded with none out. No excuses allowed there.
    8. Finally, the curse of Mark Teixeira :) :) :)

Did I say it was a great game? I hope Pete is enjoying that Boston-Anaheim series.

  313. austinmac October 9th, 2009 at 11:08 pm

Good fortune smiled on the Yankees today as it did on the Dodgers yesterday. If you ask me, it’s about time. All their has been in the playoffs has been bloop hits and game winning line drives bounce over the fence.
Wow for AROD. I will watch all(or maybe one)of Kate Hudson’s movies if she relaxes him.
    What a night!

  314. Blee October 9th, 2009 at 11:11 pm

Why bother with this stupid baseball playoff stuff. We all know this is RIGGED because of the new stadium. Was there ever any doubt that this would happen? The gullible baseball fan who goes to his team’s games thinking all this is legit. Hmmmmmm…Remember when Cleveland stomped them in their new place 10-2 and 22-3…The Indians were punished for schooling the revered yankees in their new shrine. The Twins were rewarded with the late-season rise to the playoffs for their efforts to blow those games, especially the “RIGGOFF” games. Puleeeeeeze…go back to WWE… at least it is more entertaining.

  315. PittsburghYankeeFan October 9th, 2009 at 11:21 pm

    ARod no longer mental (ANLM?)

Did you happen to see what, 7 walks? 17 runners LOB for the Twins? 12 hits?

Yes, they got out of it, and have only given up 4 ER in two games, which looks great, but these are the Twins, with a team OPS of like .650.

What was the WHIP tonight for the Yankees–19/11=1.72? You’d go to war with that WHIP? I guess the Twinkies have to on Sunday, because that’s Carl Pavano.

As I said before, let this be the “bad” game on the mound–and it really wasn’t that bad.

Let’s agree to disagree on this, and get on to other topics.

    (1) Why does TBS let Don Orsillo announce the Sox-Angels? A team’s home announcer doing national for their team?

    (2) This truly is a post-season of redemption for the Yankees. Carl Pavano, pitching with his team’s season on the line. 3 IP and 10ER would do it for me.

  316. haiku-man October 9th, 2009 at 11:35 pm

You won’t believe what I’m about to share with you.I can’t believe how emotional.
The Cardinals fans are requesting that Albert Pujols be let go!!

Can you imagine this silly suggestion?
If He comes on the Market teams will line up Angels,Yankees,Dodgers,Reds,Socks,et al.
We’re talking Alex money, break the bank.No way Yankees will allow the Socks to get him,the price would be crazy high.

My email says they are angry Albert hasn’t hit a Home Run since Sept 9th.They also think La Russa has been hitting the bottle again because he is a drunk. He told the press he was really impressed with his closer(the one who blew the save)and gave up the winning run.St Louis is a very angry place right now.

  317. Nate October 9th, 2009 at 11:39 pm

    BOO YANKEES!!
    GO TWINS!!

Your playing it way too safe if you are a fan of the Yankees. Now, being a Twins fan is a step outside the box. The Yankees have won the World Series 26 times for crying out loud. No offense, but I would like to see something new and far more surprising. I think watching a Yankee game is just too boring no matter the amount of suspense. 9 times out of 10 you already know they’re gonna win and it’s not exactly fun to expect it. I would like to see a losing team go all the way for once.

Oh and by the way, that call at the foul line was complete BS and boy is that ump gonna get some from Gardy. If your gonna pass a guy as ump make sure he can see the ball first.

(Sorry for the negativity, but the Yankees had it comin’ to ‘em. Or at least the umps did. And this is just one out of quite a few games with the Yankees where the Twins got completely robbed of a win for stupid reasons. They rightfully deserve every one of those games back. I have absolute respect for A-ROIDS, I mean A-Rod.)

  318. Nate October 9th, 2009 at 11:52 pm

Oh, and I think your little pal Brian Bruney may be on something too. I mean don’t you think that a line drive homer with that kind of aluminum bat power is a little inhuman?
