Alex: It feels so good

Posted by: Sam Borden - Posted in Misc on Oct 09, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

This is how Alex Rodriguez described his at-bat in the 9th inning against Joe Nathan: “It feels so good. You grind out an at-bat against one of the best closers in the game and you get to a favorable count and you get a pitch into your wheelhouse and you don’t want to miss it.”

He didn’t miss it.

    An A-Bomb from A-Rod!!! :D

    I’m sure Sterling went nuts.

Not as nuts as I thought he would, but it still sounded great!

I’m very happy for Alex, no matter if you love him or hate him, he’s been through alot as a Yankee and it’s nice for him to finally get some love!

Nice series for Alex so far. lol. Understatement there.

Nathan didn’t look good against Chicago, either. And TBS noted he and Mo have the same # of saves. What they fail to mention is that Nathan had more opportunities.

  9. DT - OPPC member (blood type - Positive) October 9th, 2009 at 11:12 pm

A-rod is locked in. Good swings. He’s staying on the ball.
He knew as soon as he swung in the 9th, he GOT that ball.
That must be a tremendous feeling.

  13. Darrin October 9th, 2009 at 11:13 pm

Actually Sterling best call was the Teixiera shot – because it was so unexpected that it would get out.

    And repost:

I was actually a bit disappointed with Gardenhire in his press conference. When asked about the bad call, all he did was moan and complain about the call. I think he should have said something like – “the ump blew the call, but at the end of the day we ended up with bases loaded, none out anyway. And blew it.”

Hopefully the umpires don’t try to make up for it against the Yanks in game 3. You never know with these stooges what plays they are going to actually see and you never know if a pitch is going to be a strike or a ball. I will take it….

  17. A-Rod = no longer mental in the playoffs October 9th, 2009 at 11:14 pm

Alex finally earning those pinstripes? Clearly this a different player than in recent playoffs. This is what this guys is capable of. I don’t care what anyone says- he’s the most talented player in baseball.

  18. Abdababdaserser October 9th, 2009 at 11:14 pm

That home run by Alex was incredible. It wasn’t a cheap one.

Both teams have fight in them, but the Yankees have a bit more. The Twinkies made errors in baserunning that cost them the game. Mauer held up and got stuck on 3rd, Gomez (who I really can’t stand) blew the chance earlier by a baserunning blunder.

The Twinkies had plenty of chances and didn’t pull through.

Cool to see A-rod working it out this postseason. With eight years left in pinstripes, I want nothing more than to see him win a World Series MVP this year. Get it over with so we can all really enjoy the records that will soon fall. Redemption time – definitely.

Darrin, where are you watching Gardenhire’s press conference?

  24. Joe from Long Island October 9th, 2009 at 11:15 pm

Tom in NJ – I’ve always thought, baseball is a game built on redemption – the next inning, next AB, next game, next series, next season.

I hope they interview David Robertson. He is undervalued by a lot of fans. Yeah, he got a bit of a break in that call down the line, but to get out of bases-loaded jam with no runs scored, that’s pretty good. I wonder what Joe said to him on the mound.

  25. pat October 9th, 2009 at 11:16 pm

D-Rob got the belt!! Good for him, he deserves it!

  27. 100 pitches of fun... October 9th, 2009 at 11:16 pm

For AJ’s next start it is a tough call on who catches him. He only gave up 1 run. But he put so many guys on base. If he was facing a better offense it would of been much worse than that. I would have Posada catch him next. He needs to cut down on the walks obviously.

Minnesota has no kick coming. They had plenty of chances tonight, what 14 men LOB, and that top of the 11th.

It will be a tough flight home for the Twins. I hope Ron Gardenhire doesn’t have a stroke.

  31. Darrin October 9th, 2009 at 11:17 pm

100 pitches: Hopefully that won’t occur until the ALCS ;)

  34. Zero October 9th, 2009 at 11:18 pm

I cant even understand why Nathan pitched to Arod once he got into such a bad count. Id much rather take my chances in getting Matsui into a double play than to throw a fastball over to Arod.

  35. m October 9th, 2009 at 11:19 pm

    The Ghost,

I don’t know. He had Casilla and 2 catchers  on the left on the bench.

Why not pinch run Casilla for Mauer, score the run (1st & 2nd nobody out), and then sub in Redmond in the bottom frame?

  36. Joe from Long Island October 9th, 2009 at 11:19 pm

  38. lets go yankees (formerly lets go twins) October 9th, 2009 at 11:19 pm

Gomez with a huge baserunning mistake that costs a run

3-1 lead with your closer on the mound, and he gives up the lead

No outs bases loaded and you do not score

Joe Mauer standing on 1B instead of 2B…. Yeah, that must be the reason you lost Twins….what a joke.

  39. Ken October 9th, 2009 at 11:19 pm

Looks like this series is in the bag now.. The slim chance Minnesota had ended tonight after they couldnt get a run in with bases loaded and no outs. Id be shocked if it even goes 4 games.

The one thing I am happy about is Alex’ HR – I really couldn’t be happier for him. I have no doubt that he will be booed the next time he doesn’t come through in a big spot, but this was just enormous for him.

  42. Ken October 9th, 2009 at 11:22 pm

The Twins dont look like a fundamentally sound team. How they get to the playoffs many years amazes me. Its a testament to the weakness of the central in my opinion.

  43. GreenBeret7 October 9th, 2009 at 11:23 pm

This series is a long way from “being in the bag”. If you want the proof, look how they have played against a much more talented team. Nothing in this year’s play has been easy against the Twins.

  44. rb October 9th, 2009 at 11:24 pm

Bad calls go both ways. The Twins had their chances. They left 17 men on base. SEVENTEEN. The Twins had *tons* of chances.

What a great job by Robertson. His location with his fastball was perfect to all 3 batters. It’s weird when you think he is so young and he came threw in such a big situation. Bases loaded and also just came back from his arm problems. He is a great piece for their bullpen for the future.

  50. The Ghost October 9th, 2009 at 11:25 pm

m, yeah, it seems like a no brainer to me to pinch run for your catcher when he leads off with a hit but for some reason he didn’t. I think because he feels like if they don’t score then he has no offense for the rest of the game. If Morneau was still playing I guarantee you he pinch runs for him.

  51. John October 9th, 2009 at 11:26 pm

Betsy Ive never been an A-Rod fan. And after the steroid allegations Ive lost all respect for the player. I will root for most of the team, but A-Rod can never “win me over”. I will never care for him no matter what he does. I know hes a great talent but there is just something about him that comes across as phoney. Sorry but this is just the way I feel about him. I’ll save my energy rooting for the Jeters, Marianos, Gardeners and Chamberlains of the world.

  55. rb October 9th, 2009 at 11:27 pm

djsunyc, good point. The Mets system just doesn’t seem to teach fundamentals. Of course, the Twins system does, but Gomez didn’t spend much (if any?) time in the minors there.

  56. Betsy October 9th, 2009 at 11:28 pm

I appreciate what everyone is saying, but the Twins still got jobbed.

That said, I’m not about to worship at the altar of the Twins. They are a good team and I respect them, but that’s it.

Sounds like Phil Hughes was terrible tonight – very disappointing, but I suppose that will happen. I wonder how he will bounce back from that outing – hopefully we’ll find out on Sunday.

Green Beret I disagree with you. Id be shocked if this series goes 4 games. And if by some slim chance the Yanks lose both in Minnesota I like their chances coming back home. Did you see the look in Nathan’s eyes. He looked spooked out there. I dont think he is a big game closer.

  61. The Ghost October 9th, 2009 at 11:29 pm

John, I give Rivera a pass in any and all non-save situations. He’s just a very good reliever in those situations. His mental focus is as a closer.

  62. DFox October 9th, 2009 at 11:29 pm

Wow, watching that Mauer replay, it’s really hard to believe. We always joke that the Sox or some team has the ump on their payroll, I know it’s not the case, but you can seriously “joke” about that in this case. He was looking RIGHT at the ball/line AND he was right there. You have to just wonder what the heck happened.

  63. Bronx Jeers October 9th, 2009 at 11:30 pm

You guys see that ump trying to explain the call down the line.

He said something like “we’re not used to working the foul lines” and “we don’t get to practice those calls”

    Huh?

It’s a white line. Look at it. Ball lands on one side, call it foul. It lands on the other side, it’s fair.

  64. Scorpio October 9th, 2009 at 11:30 pm

  69. Betsy October 9th, 2009 at 11:31 pm

    I missed AJ’s presser – what’d he say?

I don’t know – sort of a weird game for him., He didn’t prove he could come up big, but then he didn’t prove he couldn’t. 7 walks and 2 HBP is pretty awful…….I was hoping he’d do better. Against the Sox or Angels, I agree – he’d have blown up. It’s not a very encouraging start…..and at this point, I would put Jorge behind the plate. At least with Jorge, we’ll get offense – and Molina didn’t do much for him tonight.

  70. Rex October 9th, 2009 at 11:31 pm

Since this guy became a Yankee he has blown or almost blown game after game. He has looked good in maybe 4 or 5 appearances in 2 years as a Yankee and 4 or 5 may be generous.

The blown call didnt cost him but its a testament to how bad the umpiring has been all season and it seems to get progressively worse every year. The fact that they add 2 extra umps down the lines makes this even more comical. The home plate umpire was erratic tonight also. I saw several missed/blown home run calls this season. When you notice an umpire’s prescence, that usually means they are doing a poor job.

No. Please do not sugercoat Hughes performance. He was terrible. He walked a guy with a career .292 OBP and proceeded to give up hits to the 8 and 9 hitters who have career .267 average and .248 respectively.

I do not care what he did for the first two batters. Hughes has been great but his outing was pretty much atrocious. There is no excuse for walking Carlos Gomez and then getting beat by two scrubs.

He choked and I guess that is going to happen but it is a bit concerning that so far in this series he has been real shaky under the spotlight. Yes he got the job done yesterday but it took him close to 30 pitches to get out 2 batters.

I think Joe Nathan came down with a sudden case of Hoffmanitis.

Bronx jeers, I was saying the same thing all night. In big games, Nathan cannot be trusted. Makes me so happy we have Mo. You watch these other closers blow big game after big game and you really are thankful we have Rivera.

so I trolled on over to Pete’s new site yesterday when the big G was pinch hitting with the bases loaded. Thought I’d give him a shout out if the big guy produced.
By the time I got signed up his golden thongness had struck out. Today after Arod’s game tying homer I went back to lambaste him for all the Arod hate he dished out last season.
It was the third inning, he was splinting duty with someone else going alternate innings and had like 9 comments.
He didn’t need any more abuse.

Anyone who thinks Nathan isn’t a great closer hasn’t seen him pitch against any team besides the Yankees. He’s a monster, and the less we see him, the better.

Gardenhire came off very poor in that presser. I’m sorry but his team blew a lot of chances then he acts as though the difference of 1 base was the whole cause of his team blowing it? Mauer was on second with a single hit and he didn’t score then. The fact is his team didn’t push across runs when they were given chances to far too many times for my comfort. Who is that on? The umpires or his team?

hughes wasn’t *terrible*. looked like gangbusters against the first 2 guys. then walked gomez b/c he kept throwing outside and missing the plate. then gave up a solid hit to right. and then threw a curve that was slapped looped into center.
didn’t pitch awful but the walk is what hurt him. the first 2 batters, he looked dominant against.

    —————————-

Vin youve got to be kidding. Nathan is a monster ?? Get real. In tight, pressure packed spots Ive seen him melt like an ice cream cone. I was watching his facial expressions and I called him blowing the save. He was tight as a drum.

AJ did a great job tonight. He went 6 innings and gave up 1 run. How much better do you want him to be?

And I do not buy at all that the Red Sox or Angels would have killed him tonight b/c he walked 5 in that great 15 inning game vs the Red Sox and they did not score a single run. He has also had a number of other great or very good starts where he walked a lot of guys. I think they said tonight that AJ is the best if not one of the best pitchers this year with guys on base. He is going to walk guys. That is him.

    Joe from LongIsland,
Kate Hudson film festival–Now that was funny. I felt it necessary to read it to my totally disinterested wife. She laughed as well.

Im out of here for the night. Looks like the sox/angels have a barn burner going on in LA. Going to tune in there for a bit.

Zero, You don’t put the tying run on and have the winning run coming to the plate…..

Generally speaking I would agree with you, but I dont agree that a fastball right over the plate in a 3-1 count to ARod is the right idea either. Considering Matsui has a hard time getting to first on a walk, I think id take my chances with getting him into a double play.

Arod is such a good dude. I love that I get to cheer for him. He is what sports is all about.

  111. tennore October 10th, 2009 at 2:14 am

Now I am starting to expect it from A-Rod; even from the whole team, I bet AJ has to go get more pie pans.
