Ump: We missed it

Sam Borden
October
9

Crew chief Tim Tschida is in the press room and just admitted that LF ump Phil Cuzzi missed the line call on Joe Mauer’s ball in the 11th. It was clearly fair but was called foul.

Joe Girardi said “we got a break” when asked about it, and we’ll never know what would have happened if the correct call had been made. It still shouldn’t take away from what Dave Robertston did in that inning and what Mark Teixeira did in the bottom of the inning.

Asked about any “consequences” that Cuzzi might face, Tschida said, “nobody feels it worse than the umpire.”

The HP ump missed tons of calls too. They all even out.

  3. Joe

How a bout all of those terrible calls by meriweather against our batters? is he answering for that? I think not.

  4. Mark-Cant Touch This

Well that whole umpire crew was has been bad during the whole series.

The blown call would not have made a difference. With Marte sucking it up – I would have walked Kubel anyway to set up the double play. No reason to allow him to swing and move Mauer to 3rd with less than 2 outs. Since you know Cuddyer is not bunting the runners over and you know he doesn’t have good speed – an intentional pass to Kubel would have left the Twins with 1st and 2nd, 0 outs – as it was anyway.

GREAT job by Robertson and Tex in the field and the magical carpet ride continues! What a swing game!!!

As I wrote in the last post: If the ump doesn’t blow that HBP on Inge there’s a chance the Twins are playing golf…

That’s a bummer and, frankly, all I can think about is the Yankees winning thanks to a bad call…….

  10. JK

how about all the bs strikes the home plate umpire was calling?

The umps are always making bad calls against our boys! One thing is for sure what a game!

I was at a client’s office in Mt. Vernon today – about 10-15 min from the Stadium. I considered trying to get a ticket last minute. This was an AMAZING game – would’ve been great to attend!

Vader, you win the hat sweepstakes tonight for sure!

(if you really got that hat!)

    Are you in Atlanta?

No… but I did have a G-Tech hat in HS (I collected hats) and it is probably still in my mothers house in CT.

  15. The Ghost

Betsy soothe yourself with the fact that Hughes was squeeze on the walk to Gomez which led to the go ahead runs in the first place.

  16. Bronx Jeers

I think it was SJ44 that said that it wasn’t even a matter of “if” the umps were going to blow a call that changed the outcome of a postseason game, it was a matter of “when”.

Luckily for us, it worked in our favor as Tex’s homer should have made it 4-4.

Now we have to worry about the umps trying to make up for the bad call.

  17. Vader

I don’t know if my heart or wife and kids are going to make this whole postseason.

  18. Abdababdaserser

The umpire staff has been terrible all year, why should it be any different in the post season?

The commissioner really needs to re-evaluate the umpires and see about doing something to improve the number of bad calls.

Yes, the Yankees benefit tonight, but there are plenty that are against the Yanks. Umpires shouldn’t be deciding who wins the game.

D-Rob was very good at getting out of that jamb. Its not like the bad call made an out, though it might have cost them a run. Hard to say.

The Yankees were not swinging the bats real well in the beginning against Blackburn. He did well, but the Yanks should have done a better job against him.

Glad to see Teixeira finally getting into the hitting game. That was huge.

Vader, I dated a girl in a heavy Alabama family and they gave me a hat. I thought I had it but it might be in a storage unit. I don’t have many occasions to wear an Alabama hat in the SF Bay Area, but now I’m on the hook. Doh!

  21. Vader

Really…does anyone think that was the real SJ?

  22. Joe

Bad calls, like said earlier always even out. All that matters is the Yankees won and have a 2-0 lead going to Minnesota.

  27. Jim

I hate bad calls. I don’t like them when they are against our guys, and I don’t like them (although I’ll take ‘em) when our guys get the benefit of them. This was a particularly bad call which will get lots of play over the next day or so. It’s a shame. I still feel good for the Yanks, though. It was a big win.

  28. m

Congratulations to the Yankees for hanging in there long enough to win. Gaudin was waiting in the wings…

  29. Jaewon

Betsy: The bad call (and it was indeed horrible) hardly made a difference, in my mind. That batter and the next two all got hits. The Twins still had bases loaded and no outs — and didn’t score. I think it’s hard to predict that that one base would have made all the difference in a Twins run scoring. Watch out for the “fallacy of the predetermined outcome” or whatever good old Michael Kay says. It was a great win, and they didn’t win because of bad calls: they won because the outplayed the Twins, and the Twins couldn’t capitalize in that 11th inning.

  30. John

Let’s say they didn’t miss the call and Mauer doubles. They could still have ended up with bases loaded with no outs. Heck, Mauer was STILL standing on second with no outs and didn’t score on a single up the middle. The blown calls had no effect on the outcome. The Twins blew the best opportunity you can ask for.

  31. Darrin

    Betsy – forget it.

It isn’t as if Mauer ended up striking out and the Twins went quietly. Remember: The Twins ended up having the bases loaded and none out that inning. What more could they have asked for?

  32. Yankessblowumps

Umps are in the backpockets of the Yankees. He says “oh gee, he feels horrible.” But only AFTER he cashes the check from Steal-brenners.

Dirty Umps help the Yankees again! MLB will ensure the Yankees are given the World Series, not earned.

  33. Abdababdaserser

There were no guarantees that the Twinkies were going to score despite the missed call. A double isn’t a run, and they had plenty of chances to get in a run and didn’t.

Mauer wasn’t called out, he got on base. They could have scratched across a run. Heck, they had tons of chances to score and blew chunks.

  34. Darrin

Yankessblowumps: Very good point. Did you see how those umps took Arod’s shot in the 9th inning and Teixiera’s in the 11th and threw it over the fence for homeruns?

  35. Abdababdaserser

Darrin, I agree, that was a bit over the top, but it was worth the look on Gardenhire’s face when they did those throws. lol.

  36. Zero

the entire ump crew is brutal and should be ashamed of themselves, particularly Meriweather behind the plate. I dont know if something is wrong with him or what but he obviously cant see or doesnt know what the strike zone is.
Its also nice to have to listen to that idiot Ron Darling all night. I guess from a pitchers perspective having a foot around the strike zone called a strike is a good thing.
I really dont understand why TBS or Fox cant work out a deal to get the hometown crews working the game. It would be so nice to hear Ken Singleton, Al Leiter, and David Cone throughout the playoffs.

  37. Darrin

I was actually a bit disappointed with Gardenhire in his press conference. When asked about the bad call, all he did was moan and complain about the call. I think he should have said something like – “the ump blew the call, but at the end of the day we ended up with bases loaded, none out anyway. And blew it.”

  38. 100 pitches of fun...

Hopefully the umpires don’t try to make up for it against the Yanks in game 3. You never know with these stooges what plays they are going to actually see and you never know if a pitch is going to be a strike or a ball. I will take it….

  39. Jeff

It’s really hometown of y’all to believe that a double followed by two singles wouldn’t have netted a run.

  40. Yankessblowumps

For Yankees fans, at least you will know MLB is on your side. You get the title gift-wrapped this year.

Thanks MLB, your the best….of the worst.

All of you saying “oh, that didn’t decide the game or even matter”….Yankees fans? YES / NO

That will give us a better perspective on your comments.

  41. Bill@TDS

“They all even out”???! Ha. There might be something to that in a 162-game season, but in one game, I don’t think so. The fact that the home plate umpire called pitches “balls” and “strikes” with no reference to where the pitches were actually located for both teams does nothing to “even out” the fact that the left field umpire, the only time he had to do anything all game, actually took a run off the board for the Twins. That’s a pretty ridiculous thing to say.

  42. Ken

Ive seen bad umpiring all year. The fact that they add extra umps down the lines and calls are still getting blown amazes me. The umpires need to be held to higher standards or be better trained. I swear the calls are getting worse each season

  43. Darrin

Okay Jeff — since we believe that every single thing would have happened EXACTLY in the same way without the blown call, then the Twins would have scored a run.

Then Teixiera’s homer would have tied it again.

    What would’ve happened next?

  44. boschee

Are all you Yankee fans really proud of this victory tonight?

  45. Jeff

    Darrin,

  46. boschee

Are all you Yankee fans really proud of this victory tonight?”"”"”

Sure they are, boschee. They don’t care how they win, just so they win. That makes them losers.

  49. Greg Cohen

I have three words for any Twins fans who thinks they have a beef with this game: Up and away. You know, like the 20 or so strikes that were called tonight that were a foot up and away? The calls the Yankees weren’t getting. They have no beef, they left 17 men on base, they had the bases loaded with nobody out in the top of the 11th, and they blew the game.

  50. Darrin

Shouldn’t y’all be watching TBS to see your Sox go down 0-2?

  51. boschee

Don, that is about right. They don’t care how they win. They will win, cheat, steal, and do whatever is necessary to win. To most NY fans, a win is a win even if it should not have been a win.

  52. boschee

Greg, cry me a river. When it came down to the most important plays of the game, the yankees once again got the call.

  53. Jeff

Greg, are you basing this “up and away” garbage on some “TBS pitch tracker” or your own keen eyesight? Neither impress me too much

  54. boschee

It is too bad that a GREAT game had to be decided by a blown call of Phil Cuzzi!

  55. Greg Cohen

Jeff, are you kidding me? Did you watch the game? I don’t need pitchtrax to tell me how terrible the HP ump was tonight.

  56. Greg Cohen

    boschee, you a twins fan?

  57. Jeff

Greg, so you’re basing this your opinion on your own eyesight and understanding of the strikezone from an off center camera in left center, while sitting in your living room? The umpire’s job is to have a consistent strike-zone, not cater to yours, so if he called “20 or so” pitches outside of your idea of the strikezone regularly, I would call that consistency. This is by no means an endorsement of the job done by the umps tonight, but to say that the twins consistently got the “up and away” strike while the yankees didn’t is absurd. The game came down to a big call near the end, and Cuzzi blew it in favor of your favorite team.

  58. boschee

Greg, I am an unbiased fan watching the game, but how that game ended tonight was a travesty. I just want to see the best team win and with the blown call by Cuzzi, I didn’t feel that was the case tonight.

  59. RyanW

Roid fueled 9th inning homer and a horribly blown call in the top of the last inning… put an * by this one.

  60. jw

Lotsa sour grapes in the house tonight.

  61. RyanW

Arod is such a good dude. I love cheering for him. He is what sports should be about.

  62. Greg Cohen

No I’m basing it on both my eyesight and TBS and the players reactions. I know the strikezone, even from an off-centered camera. There’s no chance that most of those were even close. Plus those pitchers were only called for one team, and it wasn’t the Yankees.

  63. Greg Cohen

No I’m basing it on my eyesight and TBS, and the players reactions. I know the strikezone, even from an off-centered camera. There’s no chance that most of those were even close. Plus those pitchers were only called for one team, and it wasn’t the Yankees.

  64. Greg Cohen

Woops sorry for the double post, tried to edit out both, cause I was speaking about three things…. Oh well.

  65. RyanW

And the horrible Kubel called swinging strike that would have made the count 3-0 with runners on was even more evidence that the Umps had it in for the Yankees. We never get a break in this town!!!

  66. Jeff

Alright Greg, I’m impressed. Indeed the greatest armchair umpire ever. Why exactly did the hp ump have a grudge against your team, the most infallible team in the world? AT HOME?

Also the fact that your players are whiny sissies doesn’t mean Tim Tchida was an undercover Twins fan.

None of this changes the fact that the umps robbed the twins of an additional opportunity to win the game.

  67. Dustin

I don’t care if the bad call on Mauers would be double would have made a difference or not. How can such a bad call even tollerated. Especially when Cuzzi has a history of bad calls. This man should not be allowed to officiate the rest of the playoffs. This wasnt a judgment call. He wasnt calling balls or strikes or if baserunners were out or safe. He had to watch a ball and decide what side of a line its on. He was standing 10 feet away and the ball landed a foot in play. He must have blinked and just decided to guess. One of the worst calls I have seen in all of my years watching MLB. Lets not let the MLB turn into the NBA officiating.

  68. Uhhh No

Sorry, Yanks fans. If Cuzzi doesn’t completely blow that call, this is a 1-1 series. Whatever happens from this point forward is bogus. You simply can’t win straight up — you always need help.

  69. Anthony

I would just like to point out that the left field ump Phil Cuzzi is a resident of Essex County New Jersey and it’s about time we got a little home cookin if u know what i mean!

  70. Dynamix

There’s a difference between the balls and strikes calls and the blown call on the double by Mauer. The HP ump was calling wide pitches strikes for BOTH sides the whole game, he was very consistent with it. The idiot Yankee fan Phil Cuzzi blew a call so obvious I’m seriously suspicious that he did it on purpose. The ball wasn’t even close, it was a foot inside the line, it was easy to see from the first angle they showed on live TV and that was about 50ft further back and partially obscured vs where Cuzzi was standing. There’s just no way he could’ve missed that, it was one of the worst calls I’ve ever seen, Phil Cuzzi should be fired.

  71. Hawke

Even if the play was called correctly there’s no gaurantee the Twins win the game. If you assume Mauer scores then Tex’s homer ties the game an they’re still batting. It’s a shame the call was blown, but you can’t assume it would be 1-1.
