Pavano’s time with Yankees a “black period” in his career

Posted by: Sam Borden - Posted in Misc on Oct 10, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Carl Pavano met the media this morning at the Metrodome and delivered a mostly uninteresting press conference ahead of his Game 3 start tomorrow night. When asked to reflect on his time in New York, Pavano said, “I mean, it’s tough. I mean, you know, it’s definitely a black period in my career, four years where I was kind of just treading water for awhile there, but obviously, with the way this year has gone, I have been able to go out there, and sustained health, go out there and be successful and get through the year and how everything has come full circle.”

Pavano also mentioned how good the chemistry is between him and his Twins teammates, a comment which made me laugh. His new teammtaes love him. His old teammates? They did this to him.

Yankees are on the field working out right now. Batting practice inside an empty dome is even weirder than an empty stadium – each crack of the bat sounds like a gunshot and balls that hit the seats make a thwacking sound that echoes throughout the place.

Can you let him know that us fans have tried to black out his time here from our memories as well?

This is an occasion when some more candor from the sportswriter seems called for. Sam, what did you think of Pavano’s “black period” comment? Is it an attempt to face up to his reputation, or to deflect it? He’s clearly trying to seem honest, but does he really believe what he’s saying?

“In the black” is more like it. $40 million for a year’s worth of work.

  4. Rose October 10th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

Hope the Yankees crush Pavano tomorrow.

I am tired of hearing that losers name and seeing his face. It would be great to beat him tomorrow night to advance.

What’s funny about that SI article is that the Mets clubhouse is given as one example of looseness and team chemistry. Hah!

  8. Psyluk October 10th, 2009 at 3:28 pm

I’d like to see the Yankees smash him badly to bookend the Twins’ season and remind him that he was a 40 million dollar piece of trash.

  9. Psyluk October 10th, 2009 at 3:29 pm

We could tolerate players when they couldn’t perform on the field. What we can’t tolerate is some schmoe stealing money while living it up, without even attempting to get back on the field to earn a single penny of it. It’s called stealing, and tomorrow the Yanks will take as much of it back on the field as possible.

“Ive always hated Gardenhire. He comes across as a sore loser. I just dont think he is a very good manager”

he may be bad loser. A bad manager?? He is as good or almost as good as Tom Kelly.

  12. 100 pitches of fun... October 10th, 2009 at 3:39 pm

Of course the Twins have to say how much they “love” him. If they didn’t he would of gotten a paper cut and wouldn’t of pitched again this season.

    successful?

5.37 era,1.37 whip & the league batting .284 against him

  14. randy l. October 10th, 2009 at 3:51 pm

from the last post with gardner on third and one out, gardenhire intentionally walks jeter and then plays the infield in .

    yeah that’s odd.

coincidently , i had asked cb in the first game if the odds were higher to score a run with a man on third compared to a man on third and first.

gardenhire seemed to choose first and third , but didn’t play for the double play.

so maybe he just didn’t want to face jeter.

why not walk the bases loaded and have a force everywhere?

it would be interesting to hear gardenhire’s explanation, but with so much happening in that game we’re probably not going to hear it.

  15. 27 October 10th, 2009 at 3:51 pm

Black? You mean GREEN Mr. Pavano?

I wish I could spend 4 years doing nothing and get paid for it like that.

  16. pat October 10th, 2009 at 3:51 pm

Sent to me so I can’t take credit for them but they amused me so I will share…..

“Pavano calls his Yankee years his black period. The Yankees called his Yankee years his black and blue period.”

“Are Tex and A-rod the new Mantle and Maris? They were called the M and M boys so that would make Tex and A-Rod the T and …… nevermind”

  17. bru October 10th, 2009 at 3:58 pm

was the infield in with only gardner on first & jeter still up & they just never put them back into dp debth?

i would of loved to see a bunt

unless jeter misses it gardner scores & it takes the dp away or a play where gardner cant score

According to mlb.com Most saves ranking in AL regular season: 1,Fuentes (LAA) 4
    2.Nathan(Twins) 47
    3.Mariano Rivera 44
    4.Aardsman (SEA)38
    5.Papelbon 38.
Nathan had more saves than Mo this regular season.

Due to inclement weather the NLDS game with Philly/Rockies is postponed to Sunday,as per MLB.COM

  19. Neil October 10th, 2009 at 3:59 pm

Not once has Pavano ever mentioned the $40M he pilfered of Yankee money.
Tell Joe Ordinary that he hit a $5M lottery and he’s grateful for life.

I wonder was it Cashman or Torre that made him lay down in the middle of his prime?

Yankees got got paid the contract was insured, but he lost 4 valuable years of pitching off his career.

  22. bru October 10th, 2009 at 4:07 pm

pavano got bashed because he did not give everything he had,was hardly around & his head wasnt in it

  24. damon October 10th, 2009 at 4:12 pm

Sam you’d be hard pressed to find anyone on this blog to have something nice to say about Pavano.
When you can’t pitch because your butt hurts,or lie about busted ribs,He’s a crook plain and simple.

Sorry if your mom doesn’t understand blatant cheaters get hosed.
Tell momma we have nice things to say about her boy, though.

  25. mick October 10th, 2009 at 4:13 pm

    Randy

They pitched around Jeter and gave him ball 4 intentionally.

A friend of mine thought Jeter should have attempted a steal of 2nd.

I disagreed. Too much risk, not enough reward.

If they throw him out, Gardy can’t score on a sac fly. If he steals it they prob walk Damon to set up a force at every base.

Maybe he was thinking Gardy comes home if they throw through.

  26. Betsy October 10th, 2009 at 4:14 pm

This is a guy who lied about getting into a car accident. It was a black period for the Yankees and their fans………the ONLY thing I’ll give Pavano credit for is not badmouthing NY when AJ asked him about it. They are friends and, per AJ, Pavano said that he got off to a bad start and never recovered but that NY was a great place to play.

  33. Betsy October 10th, 2009 at 4:22 pm

Erin, yep – from their time in Florida; AJ is friends with Josh Beckett as well. I won’t underestimiate the guy because he’s pitched great against the Yankees this year.

CK, lol………Maybe the Yanks shouldn’t try so hard against him. I’m sure they want to beat the heck out of him, but I wonder if their trying to hard caused their struggles.

  50. 100 pitches of fun... October 10th, 2009 at 4:33 pm

The hitters tried way too hard to smack him around in the 2 starts he made against them this season. It seemed like they were trying to hit grand slams on every pitch. I remember one of them I think Arod not sure even admitted that they tried to do too much. Hopefully this time they will have smaller swings and actually will slap him around.

  51. austinmac October 10th, 2009 at 4:34 pm

Pavano pitched well twice against the Yanks early this year. He will throw a lot of change-ups. That is the pitch he will rely on. Stay back and they will hit him.

  52. Betsy October 10th, 2009 at 4:35 pm

Wow, I guess Willis has been around longer than I thought. I don’t remember him pitching, but then I try to black that series out of my mind……..

Oh boy, MLB: the Twins should have won that game. Matt whatever hisname is is such a clown. Um, Joe Nathan blew the game and they left a billion guys on base. No, they shouldn’t have won it.

  53. jennifer October 10th, 2009 at 4:35 pm

Oh and I don’t want to hear the Twins crying about that blown call down the line. Yes it was clearly fair. But they had the basesloaded NO OUTS and didn’t score. They also had a runner slow down before he reached home assuming he’d score (didn’t before Gomez was thrown out). They left 17 on base. It isn’t the umps fault it is yours for not getting timely hits!

Carl Pavano might finally pitch a playoff clincher for the Yanks. The fact that he’s in a Twins uniform is a mere technicality.

  58. haiku-man October 10th, 2009 at 4:37 pm

  59. Betsy October 10th, 2009 at 4:37 pm

LOL Erin……2003 was a long time ago and I think Pavano pitched very well in that series. AJ’s been waiting a long time for his chance to pitch in the post season. When he talks about 2003, you can tell he was very happy for the teammates he grew up with, but that it’s a bittersweet moment for him because he didn’t get a chance to contribute.

Other than Mark Redman all Marlins starters pitched very well in the 2003 series… Pavano pitched once. Penny and Beckett twice.

Yanks just have to stay back and realize he cannot throw the fastball by them and punish his change.

Yanks also out hit the Marlins and had a better staff ERA. Sometimes stuff just happens

My mother-in-law, sister-in-law and my wife have been at it all day making alcapurrias and pasteles. I’m enjoying mine right now with some hot sauce and a glass of cabernet.

If you don’t have three lovely women at your house making you dinner, may I suggest pizza.

Jen, fortunately it was really just Matt V. saying that…..last night, I was pleasantly surprised to hear commentators on MLB and Baseball Tonight not blaming the ump’s call for the Twins’ loss……

Jeter had something to do with the Gomez play. needless to say he coaxed the ball from swish

Pavano is the definition of the word “bum”.

  104. 86w183 October 10th, 2009 at 5:45 pm

my point is that everything has been said about the poor baserunning and not enough about the heads up defense. Jeter helped, but the SS almost always does that, the key is the RF making a great throw.

Jennifer, I’ve seen the replay ten times and the runner was not responsible for the run not counting. No other runner busts it every step of the way once the throw goes elsewhere. Blaming the runner for that out is like blaming the catcher for a hanging curveball

Brian Cashman stated “it was a black period in my career too”

Pavano felt slighted for some reason after joining the team and proceeded to malinger out of spite for the next several years.

He could’ve contributed. He didn’t. He may have cost us championships.

I hope we chase him in the first tomorrow. Six runs or bust!
