Tolbert out, Buscher active

Chad Jennings
October
10

Bit of mild news from Twins manager Ron Gardenhire.

Minnesota third baseman Matt Tolbert is going on the disabled list after pulling his oblique last night. Brian Buscher will replace him on the Twins roster.

Tolbert and Buscher are pretty similar players: Corner outfield types who haven’t hit much in the big leagues, though Tolbert was a nice hitter the times I saw him in Triple-A. Gardenhire announced that Brendan Harris — who tripled and made a terrific defensive play after replacing Tolbert last night — will start in Tolbert’s place at third base.

Sam Josh and Chad must be paid by the thread! You don’t get to settle in to one, before another pops up.

  2. RalphieD (OPPC)

if tolbert never got hurt, that game might of been totally different…i kinda like how it happened anyways though :)

  3. 100 pitches of fun...

I am watching the Dod/Card game…Padilla is pitching for the Dodgers and I was just wondering how many times will he hit Pujols instead of having to pitch to him?

  4. pat

Good for the St. Louis fans giving Holliday a standing ovation in his first AB.

  5. Mark in Tampa

I thought he looked injured after running to first early in the game, but I figured it was a hammy.

  6. i like pizza

So both ALDS are 2-0, assuming the Sox or Twins don’t win 3 in a row, how does everyone feel about the Angels and Yanks matchup? Don’t wanna be a negative nancy but the yankees really have not hit extremely well in this series minus Jeter and Arod, and against Lackey and Weaver, it just scares me a bit. I have faith they’ll battle one out and win the series, they did win that series in Anaheim this year, which was huge. But how’s everyone feeling about the very likely scenario of facing the angels in the ALCS?

  7. Wave Your Hat

I don’t want to nitpick, but neither Tolbert nor Buscher are corner outfield types. I think of corner outfield types as players who play in the outfield, and hit for power.

Neither Tolbert nor Buscher play in the outfield, being infielders, and neither appears to be an extra base threat either.

Baseball reference is a great site for quick, easy fact checking.

  8. eric

    @ i like pizza

lets finish off the twins first.

  9. haiku-man

I’ve been nursing a hamstring injury for the past few months, from a fluke accident. You can’t run with a pulled hamstring trust me.

St Louis has to root for Holliday,he’s got Alberts back, and their backs are against the wall.

Torre’s showing off for the Steinbrenners, letting them see he still got it.

  10. Joe from Long Island

Just got from Saturday evening Mass, and am checking the blog while the TV is showing the Cards-Dodgers, with Tex’ best friend, Vincente Padilla, pitching.

    1. Having that hip surgery may the best thing that could have happened to Alex. It allowed him to re-examine his life, and the rest is history. That and Kate Hudson.

    2. Jason Zillo deserves some sort of medal from the Yankees for the job he’s done, orchestrating the PR rehabilitation of Alex.

    3. murphydog – my wife left today to take her mom back home to Philadelphia. During the week, they made dinner each night, and did a very nice job each time. Also cleaned up afterwards. Now that I no longer have women waiting on me, guess what I picked up for dinner. Yup, pizza.

  11. Orlando Chris

Did one of the TBS announcers just call Mattingly the Dodgers’ pitching coach?

    ::facepalm, sigh::

  12. Buddy Biancalana

    Wave-

Must have been a typo, corner infield.

  13. pat

“St Louis has to root for Holliday,he’s got Alberts back, and their backs are against the wall.”

Not sure all Yankee fans would be so open minded and magnanimous.

  14. haiku-man

    Joe from Long Island

You are correct about Alex.He said himself, the surgery forced him to accept the possibility that his playing career could be over. You know the saying,You never miss your water til your well runs dry?
Alex had to work hard to get back in playing form and that required humility.

  15. Christina- Here come the bandwagoners...

    2. Jason Zillo deserves some sort of medal from the Yankees for the job he’s done, orchestrating the PR rehabilitation of Alex.
    ——
Joe, great point about Jason Zillo. He’s done a fantastic job this year with the team, both on the field and off the field with HOPE week.

  16. haiku-man

If the Yankees wanted to avoid elimination they would. In 2004 game 7 WS,I didn’t hear any boos at the game.It was too important.

  19. 100 pitches of fun...

I hope Damon and Swish had a good workout day today catching flyballs. Rollerskates Damon really scares me in the dome. In the last series that they played there he dropped one ball and almost another and said after the game he had a ton of issues following the flight of the balls because of the roof.

  20. Ham Fighters

well, at least pete is getting some comments on the extra bases blog, but maybe not the kind of comments he’d like. some of his homies are all over him about his elf comments about pedroia and his attempt to cover some of them up. hey 7 comments on that blog is amazing, they may need to start a new post to break it up.

could be a very short postseason and a very long offseason for pete.

  21. Mark in Tampa

Maybe Pete could try a “George Costanza”, and just show up for work at Lohud like nothing happened. :)

I don’t think Josh, Sam, and Chad would be giving back the blog, though.

  22. Pat M.

Is there anyone who still doubt that the LA Dodgers are a very good baseball team ??? They’ve been the NL’s best team all season…..They’ll lose to the Yanks 4-2 in a few weeks, but they’re a very balanced ballclub that can beat you many ways…Very deep also

  23. Wait till the ALDS

The Cards are better, the Dodgers are lucky. Nine times out of ten the Cards win when Carpenter and Wainwright start. I’m more scared of the Cards. Good luck Dodgers.

  24. Mark in Tampa

Yes, the Yanks should be able to beat the Dodgers, as long as the pitching staff doesn’t get their advice from Mike Mussina on how to pitch to Manny.

  25. BBFan

Very few punidts predicted that Dodgers will make it to the WS. I think they have as good a chance as Phillies or Rockies. Cardinals who were picked by most are running out of time fast.

  26. 100 pitches of fun...

The Dodgers have a good lineup and bullpen but their starting pitching isn’t good at all. Kershaw is good but Wolf and Padilla aren’t going to shut down the Phillies or any AL team if they advance.

  27. Psyluk

Vicente Padilla is starting game 3 of a playoff series. I don’t think I need to say anything other than that.

  28. BBFan

Both MLB and TV would love to see Yanks and Dodgers in the WS. It will be great for the game. Unfortunately, either Torre or Girardi will take lot of flak for loosing the series.

  29. Wait till the ALDS

I’d love a Yanks-Dodgers WS. All the fun of a rivalry series w/o the pressure of being in the same division of your rival (cough Boston cough).

  30. Ken

Can anyone believe what a job Toree is doing with this Dodger team? I mean really, to sweep the Cardinals is really an upset. Good to see Joe working his magic again out in La La Land.

  31. pat

Twins catcher Joe Mauer has been playing with a sore hip flexor, but he wants to continue catching, Manager Ron Gardenhire said today.

Gardenhire said Mauer felt the injury after tripping around first base in Tuesday’s 12-inning tiebreaker victory over Detroit. After Friday’s 11-inning loss in Game 2, Mauer acknowledged that he’s been sore and that it affected it’s affecting his base running.

But today Mauer said he intends to catch, not DH, the rest of the way.

    http://blogs2.startribune.com/.....s-tolbert/

  32. Ken

Ive always been a huge supporter of Joe. I miss him but Im glad he has taken this Dodger team to the Playoffs. Looks like we may be faced with a Yankee-Dodger WS. Great news for the networks because these playoff games historically draw low ratings outside of the cities that are in it.

  33. haiku-man

Pujols hasn’t hit a home run since Sept 9th,some 86 at bats ouch.
I told my Cards friends he swung himself out at the AS game,in the HR derby, that he didn’t come close to winning!

  34. Wait till the ALDS

Honestly, I don’t think Torre did that good. The Dodgers were terrible in the second half, and is it really great managing to have Carpenter do disappointingly bad and have Holliday drop the ball?

  35. Ken

Ham fighters, Blogs dont generate any revenue for the newspaper business. This is a lot of fun but their bread and butter comes from people buying their paper. Id bet 90 percent of the people here have no idea what newspaper this blog is attached to.

  36. Joe from Long Island

Can someone explain to me why Joel Pineiro is still pitching? The Cards are down 2-0, and he’s in the process of giving up even more than the 3 runs he already has. What is LaRussa saving his bullpen for – srping training 2010?

As I type this, it’s now 4-0. Can you imagine Joe Girardi or Joe Torre not going to his pen a long time ago?

  37. 100 pitches of fun...

I think if the Phillies advance they would definitely beat the Dodgers. Lee and Hamels can shut down anyone. I can’t see the Dodgers starting pitching shutting the Phillies lineup down.

  38. Wait till the ALDS

I still say the Rockies beat the Phillies. Winning game 2 was huge for them, now they sweep them at Coors Field.

  39. haiku-man

Just rec’d an email from St Louis: No way Torre will ever let another team come back and win a series on him, with 1 win to victory. He learned that in 2004!!

  40. vinny-b

“Regarding Pete…He has gone from The Blogfather to Fredo in a weeks time…what a shame”

provided he’s getting paid, i don’t expect he’s losing much sleep.

despite what some may believe, one’s stature on this blog isn’t the end all and be all, in this world

  41. Wait till the ALDS

BOLD, bold prediction: Cardinals make epic comeback, win the series against Dodgers.

Calling it. Yeah, you read right.

Joe Torre, eat your heart out…

  42. jpb1973

Can anyone believe what a job Toree is doing with this Dodger team? I mean really, to sweep the Cardinals is really an upset…

    —————————————————

How can it be an upset? The Dodgers (95-67) had a better record in the regular season than the Cardinals (91-71).

  43. Wait till the ALDS

“But today Mauer said he intends to catch, not DH, the rest of the way.”

Well we should help him by making sure that “the rest of the way” is only one game!

  44. Wait till the ALDS

The Dodgers had a better first half record than the Cards, Cards were very good in the second half, while the Dodgers were bad.

  45. vinny-b

“Can anyone believe what a job Toree is doing with this Dodger team?”

he has a team of all-stars, and is in the NL West. Not to mention, colorado was 18 games back, and nearly pulled even with them. Gardenhire is a better manager.

“Id bet 90 percent of the people here have no idea what newspaper this blog is attached to”

yea your right, it only says it 5 times on this page and the fact that there are daily posts about articles in the newspaper…yea nobody knows…

  52. haiku-man

Philly in 5 says coolstandings site they have been 100% so far!

Wow Dodgers 4-0,Pineiro was always spotty the whole season.Knocked out after 4 innings is bad,STL’s bull pen is WEAK.

  53. Sargent

Remember when people said Padilla was a “bad teammate” lol

He’s about to win a playoff series for Joe Torre’s Dodgers. Some “bad teammate”. If you win, everyone is a good teammate……

  54. Gary

This series should be 1-1… that dropped ball killed the Cardinals in game 2. In a 5 game series like that, a play will kill you for the rest of the series.

Another reason why the 5 game series is a joke. It’s not about the better team, it is about who gets the breaks.

  55. Post number something

It’s so hard not to look past this series and worry about the Angels. … I wish Boston would win so we could go ahead of them for 2009 but lets face it, they are just not that good.

  56. bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes

The comment that Alex was acknowledging Robertson as some revelation for him is BS.

Alex has been one of the greatest students of baseball, and he has ALWAYS noticed what’s gone on around him in that regard.

If you weren’t so bent on the Alex transformation angle – which has some merit, obviously – you’d know that when he’s mentioned other players, he doesn’t just hyperbolize – he speaks very specifically about them in baseball terms.

Nothing new there, and really, he’s always nodded to teammates and noticed a job well done. That is nothing new, and nothing to marvel at.

  57. Oddessy

Dodgers prove that starting pitching is overrated… if you bring a killer offense and strong bullpen to the dance, you can win it all. Phillies proved that last year as well.

  58. Rose

Hope it’s Dodgers vs. Yankees in World Series. Would like to see Torre back in NY but want the Yankees to win the World Series.

  59. Alan

The possibility does exist where Torre and the Dodgers have to come to the Stadium to face the Yankees.

  60. 100 pitches of fun...

Who cares who the Yanks have to face as long as they get to the WS….

  61. haiku-man

When La Russa broughr in the closer the other night, and he allowed the Dodgers to even up the score with 2 outs,Smoltz could’ve gotten 1 out for sure, but Tony kept the closer in.

In the press conference the St Louis media(who hats him)went apoplectic when he said he was Really impressed with closer, that just blew the save, and gave up the winning run.

  62. haiku-man

    meant brought

  63. Joe from Long Island

LaRussa has an ego the size of Texas. He is also very defensive about his moves. (Sidewalk psychologists, make of that what you will.) That is why he will not leave St. Louis, because he can not and will not tolerate anyone (ie, media) who questions him.

  64. haiku-man

I relish the thought of the original rivalry.

New York Yankees vs -Broohlyn- LA Dodgers!

  65. Joe from Long Island

New post. Boy, these guys are active.

  66. haiku-man

    Joe from Long Island

St Louis will ask for his head, when they lose. They already want Pujols gone(if you can imagine that.)

You will be hard pressed to find a great fondness for La Russa in STL.Every body suspects he was drinking heavily again in this series, and it clouded his judgement.

  67. Abdababdaserser

I’ve been reading and hearing Gardenhire throughout this series, and I just find myself liking him less and less.

Insinuating that the game turned on the bad foul ball call, when his team left 17 on the bases, now giving Mauer an excuse with being injured.

Poor job. Poor managers look to give a lot of excuses, good managers acknowledge when flaws show up in their team.

Notice that no one talks about the bad strike calls that the Yankee batters had.

I am not a fan of Girardi, but at least he owns up when the bats are doing poorly, when they don’t play well. It isn’t admitting defeat, but he also isn’t setting up a “reason” for if they fall short.

Last season Jeter was playing hurt for most of the season, yet no real word on that. Its the no excuses type play that earns far more respect.

  68. Abdababdaserser

Wait a minute, St. Louis, that great baseball city that never boos their players, that nESPeeN always sang praises about how great and understanding their fans are, are looking to be rid of Pujols and Holliday?

I guess they didn’t get the message from the media talking heads.

  69. Rose

“They already want Pujols gone(if you can imagine that.)”

Who in their right mind would want Pujols gone? He’s probably the best hitter in baseball.

  70. Post number something

    @ I like pizza
So both ALDS are 2-0, assuming the Sox or Twins don’t win 3 in a row, how does everyone feel about the Angels and Yanks matchup?

Honestly, a little sick to my stomach but no more than the final WS games will scare me. Gotta beat em to get the ring. We have the bats, we have the pitching. We’ve never been in a better position to win. It’ll take lots of luck to get to the promise land.
