ALDS Game 3: Yankees at Twins (Part Deux)

Posted by: Sam Borden - Posted in Misc on Oct 11, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

UPDATE, 9:13 p.m.: Yanks are nine outs away from the ALCS. That deserves a new thread, no?

UPDATE, 9:14 p.m.: Pettitte finishes with a swinging strikeout. What a night: 6 1/3, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. That’s big-game Andy. Joba on now.

UPDATE, 9:17 p.m.: Just putting this out there: Pettitte was at 81 pitches. If Joba-to-Hughes-to-Mo works fine, nobody says anything. If it doesn’t …

UPDATE, 9:20 p.m.: Not a good start. Young doubles to the gap, and Twins MVP (of this series) Brendan Harris is up now. Phil Coke just got up in a hurry in the pen.

UPDATE, 9:23 p.m.: I’m sure Rodriguez likes having Teixeira hitting ahead of him in the lineup, but he must also like throwing to him at first base. That was a nice scoop at the bag.

UPDATE, 9:28 p.m.: And Joba gets out of it. It wasn’t pretty, but he got the job done. Hughes for three, Mo for three and it’s Game 1 on Friday at the Stadium.

UPDATE, 9:30 p.m.: Announced crowd of 54,735 at the Dome tonight. Matt Guerrier on for the Twins now.

UPDATE, 9:41 p.m.:

UPDATE, 9:47 p.m.: No need to wait any longer. Rivera for the last four outs.

UPDATE, 9:51 p.m.: You can set your watch to it: Mo busts someone in, weak grounder to first, inning over.

UPDATE, 10:29 p.m.: Two outs away and some dude just ran on the field, sprinted right past the mound and out into center field, where he tried to climb the blue baggie fence (he was unsuccessful). How cool is Mariano Rivera? He just sort of looked at the guy as he ran past. No flinch, no nothing. Threw a few warm-up pitches as the guy was “escorted” off by the cops and he’s ready to get back to work.

That’s a lot of faith in Joba to hold a one run lead with only a couple bullpen innings. I’m crossing my fingers.

Let’s hope the midges can’t break through the Metrodome roof.

Tough call on whether to remove Andy or not. The results will tell us if it was a good move or not.

  4. Psyluk October 11th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

Girardi’s opening himself up to get second-guessed if this move doesn’t work out. The bottom of the lineup has done nothing against Pettitte and Andy was barely over 80 pitches. Let’s hope it turns out the way we think.

  5. Ace (Yankees, Giants, Knicks, and Rangers Fan!) October 11th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

Come on, Joba. Just 2 outs to get!

  6. JasonR October 11th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

    Let’s go Joba.

  8. JoeyA October 11th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

    It absolutely does.

Andy Pettitte has been stellar for this game. Keep it up!

  9. zman October 11th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

Why take out petite there… only 81 pitches, still looking great

haha I thought the same thing.

  11. MG October 11th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

Andy must have known that was his last batter before he went out to pitch. Harris has been the only guy in the bottom of the order that has hurt them in the series, hopefully Joba can blow him away with heat.

  12. The Ghost October 11th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

I’m not sure I take Andy out the way he’s pitching.

  13. Tarheelyank October 11th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

    Great call GB.

  14. m October 11th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

As I was saying, this is a lame move. Only 81 pitches sprinkled 3 hits with 7 K’s. Let him pitch.

  15. jennifer October 11th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

The rats in the Dome can’t come and attack joba on the mound can they?

Rodriguez will drive in at least one run in his third at bat. That’s been his pattern in the first 2 games.”

we have our own Mike Blowers in the audience – GB’s dog must have typed that!

  17. Don October 11th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

Couldn’t Andy have completed the 7th? His pitch count is not that high.

  18. randy l. October 11th, 2009 at 9:17 pm

“Rodriguez will drive in at least one run in his third at bat. That’s been his pattern in the first 2 games.”

    that would be gb7.

    Girardi over managing again..

  20. Michael T October 11th, 2009 at 9:17 pm

Was just saying in the other thread that I agree with going batter to batter. Don’t get pulling him with the bottom of the order coming up and just striking two guys out badly. Its not as if we can count on the 2007 Jobber.

  21. The Ghost October 11th, 2009 at 9:17 pm

This is some serious overmanaging here. Joba better make his manager look good.

  22. m October 11th, 2009 at 9:17 pm

The trainer is laughing because he doesn’t want to touch his privates.

  23. Pov October 11th, 2009 at 9:17 pm

Tough call to put the ball in Joba’s hands. Lets hope here for the best.

  34. Scorpio October 11th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

I’m not sure about the Andy move but it’s better to pull a pitcher too early rather than too late. Joba, please hold it together!

  35. Tarheelyank October 11th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

    Andy pitched great.

How do you complain about Joba, Hughes and MO

  36. Ace (Yankees, Giants, Knicks, and Rangers Fan!) October 11th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

A ploy by the Twins to throw Joba’s rhythm out of sync.

  37. Joe from Long Island October 11th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

Interesting decision for Joe – Like Sterling pointed out, this isn’t a game against KC. These are clutch outs Andy has been getting, and although the pitch count isn’t up there, it is draining, mentally as well as physically. Do you let Andy stay in and risk one swing tying it, or do you go to a well-rested pen, Joba, Phil, and ultimatley Mo for even 4-5 outs?

Joe knows his team, and has been making winning decisions all year.

  38. Mark-Cant Touch This October 11th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

You never use a pitcher unless you have to, if this game does go into extras, we lose Joba because Joe took out Andy to early

  39. Dan @ 116&B-Way October 11th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

“…foul ball to the protective cup.”

How the HELL do they know he’s wearing one?!? Did Skip and Ron feel all the Twins down before the game?

If you play left field, there’s no need for a cup!

  40. Psyluk October 11th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

    What happened to Young?

  41. michelle b. looking for my Cashmonese Dictionary-Hooked on Cashmonese Worked for me October 11th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

Protective cup>…LOL..if he were wearing a protective cup his face wouldnt have looked like he had been shot.

  42. Michael T October 11th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

Andy has run out of gas quickly in several games this year, but he still looks strong. Joe knows these guys better than I though, so I hope his confidence in Joba is rewarded. It would also be big if he could be counted on as a late inning weapon the rest of the way.

  43. RS October 11th, 2009 at 9:20 pm

    Second guessing now?

  44. Carl October 11th, 2009 at 9:20 pm

  45. MG October 11th, 2009 at 9:20 pm

    Interesting.

  53. Mike B. October 11th, 2009 at 9:21 pm

  54. Pov October 11th, 2009 at 9:21 pm

The “or two” part is not very comforting. You can not have a bad outing or TWO in the postseason esp. in a 5 game series. He has got to get it together

  304. GreenBeret7 October 11th, 2009 at 9:46 pm

Hughes still needs to learn to “show” his curveball early in the count. Right now it seems he gets excited once he gets to 0-2 and doesn’t have much of a gameplan, this allows hitters to keep on fouling off pitches and Hughes will eventually throw a breaking ball that the hitter has been waiting on.

Something the Yanks have been doing that bodes well for the Anaheim series – they are taking advantage of mistakes by the other team. That, and scoring not just on HRs.

Did you really want to face “Gibson” Beckett and Lester 4 times in a 7 game series?

  736. PittsburghYankeeFan October 11th, 2009 at 10:25 pm

If the Yankees win this one, there are three things that need a really good look:

    (1) Damon is in a black hole, continued from September.
    (2) Swisher is in a slightly less black hole.
    (3) Most importantly, Phil Hughes needs to regain movement/command of his fastball. Maybe he’s too amped.

If they can fix Hughes, I like their chances. Just like their entire season, he is the key.

Arod, Tex, Po, Jeter, and the hitters were all great. But, make no mistake, this was won by pitching. That is what sets this team apart from the Yankees’ teams of the last 5 years.

This Twins team was impressive. They pretty much had bench players at every position but 1 and they won the Central division and played the Yankees tough. If not for a couple of baserunning mistakes this series might be very different.

    Erica,
Please keep up the countdown this week, it keeps me focused.

  917. m October 11th, 2009 at 10:44 pm

    Congrats to the Yankees.

And nice try by the Twins. They played us tough all season and postseason.

I’m glad that we tacked on because the look on Punto’s face (that they KEPT showing) was excruciating.

Kubel was a huge reason for their surge, but he had a tough, tough series. Did they scout him well? IDK. 9 strikeouts in one 3 game series is unheard of.

Pavano pitched well, but it’s hard to flip this lineup 3 times without giving up anything.

  918. Yankee Fan in Boston October 11th, 2009 at 10:44 pm

I know you said something about wearing a cup @ all levels. I play college ball – yea, all the infielders+catcher wear cups. Half the outfielders wear one, maybe 1 or 2 of the pitchers do.

    K?

Does anyone here understand Spanish? :)

  929. JeterJobaCanoFanForever, enough said October 11th, 2009 at 11:32 pm

Am I angry at you Joba non-believers. You have watched him pitch for almost 3 years and you can’t believe that he can’t pitch one inning successfully. Being a reliever is so much easier than being a starter.

If you are worried about anyone it should be Hughes. Mo has had to rescue him for the 3rd out in the 8th inning twice. Thank God Mo is Mo.

Andy pitched great. I was hoping he would go longer but I, like Trisha, believe that Joe knows his players better than we do.

Congratulations to the 2009 Yankees. Next step: Angels.
