ALDS Game 3: Yankees at Twins (Part Deux)
UPDATE, 9:13 p.m.: Yanks are nine outs away from the ALCS. That deserves a new thread, no?
UPDATE, 9:14 p.m.: Pettitte finishes with a swinging strikeout. What a night: 6 1/3, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. That’s big-game Andy. Joba on now.
UPDATE, 9:17 p.m.: Just putting this out there: Pettitte was at 81 pitches. If Joba-to-Hughes-to-Mo works fine, nobody says anything. If it doesn’t …
UPDATE, 9:20 p.m.: Not a good start. Young doubles to the gap, and Twins MVP (of this series) Brendan Harris is up now. Phil Coke just got up in a hurry in the pen.
UPDATE, 9:23 p.m.: I’m sure Rodriguez likes having Teixeira hitting ahead of him in the lineup, but he must also like throwing to him at first base. That was a nice scoop at the bag.
UPDATE, 9:28 p.m.: And Joba gets out of it. It wasn’t pretty, but he got the job done. Hughes for three, Mo for three and it’s Game 1 on Friday at the Stadium.
UPDATE, 9:30 p.m.: Announced crowd of 54,735 at the Dome tonight. Matt Guerrier on for the Twins now.
UPDATE, 9:41 p.m.:
UPDATE, 9:47 p.m.: No need to wait any longer. Rivera for the last four outs.
UPDATE, 9:51 p.m.: You can set your watch to it: Mo busts someone in, weak grounder to first, inning over.
UPDATE, 10:29 p.m.: Two outs away and some dude just ran on the field, sprinted right past the mound and out into center field, where he tried to climb the blue baggie fence (he was unsuccessful). How cool is Mariano Rivera? He just sort of looked at the guy as he ran past. No flinch, no nothing. Threw a few warm-up pitches as the guy was “escorted” off by the cops and he’s ready to get back to work.

Chad Jennings
Josh Thomson

That’s a lot of faith in Joba to hold a one run lead with only a couple bullpen innings. I’m crossing my fingers.
Let’s hope the midges can’t break through the Metrodome roof.
Tough call on whether to remove Andy or not. The results will tell us if it was a good move or not.
Girardi’s opening himself up to get second-guessed if this move doesn’t work out. The bottom of the lineup has done nothing against Pettitte and Andy was barely over 80 pitches. Let’s hope it turns out the way we think.
Come on, Joba. Just 2 outs to get!
Let’s go Joba.
G.I Joe over managing again!!
It absolutely does.
Andy Pettitte has been stellar for this game. Keep it up!
Why take out petite there… only 81 pitches, still looking great

haha I thought the same thing.
Andy must have known that was his last batter before he went out to pitch. Harris has been the only guy in the bottom of the order that has hurt them in the series, hopefully Joba can blow him away with heat.
I’m not sure I take Andy out the way he’s pitching.
Great call GB.
As I was saying, this is a lame move. Only 81 pitches sprinkled 3 hits with 7 K’s. Let him pitch.
The rats in the Dome can’t come and attack joba on the mound can they?

Rodriguez will drive in at least one run in his third at bat. That’s been his pattern in the first 2 games.”
we have our own Mike Blowers in the audience – GB’s dog must have typed that!
Couldn’t Andy have completed the 7th? His pitch count is not that high.
“Rodriguez will drive in at least one run in his third at bat. That’s been his pattern in the first 2 games.”
that would be gb7.
Girardi over managing again..
Was just saying in the other thread that I agree with going batter to batter. Don’t get pulling him with the bottom of the order coming up and just striking two guys out badly. Its not as if we can count on the 2007 Jobber.
This is some serious overmanaging here. Joba better make his manager look good.
The trainer is laughing because he doesn’t want to touch his privates.
Tough call to put the ball in Joba’s hands. Lets hope here for the best.
Powered by Pinstripes…
LoHudders loquaciousness…
Pain for Pavano…
Good move by Joe
Young’s in some serious pain.
OUCH.
Young is asking the trainer if he knows a good adoption agency.
That looked really bad.
I wouldn’t worry about rats in the dome. However, I wouldn’t be shocked to see Joba attacked by an angry moose.
Delmon Young will not be partying tonight lol
Ouch!!
john and suzyn talking about private parts…im going to church now
I’m not sure about the Andy move but it’s better to pull a pitcher too early rather than too late. Joba, please hold it together!
Andy pitched great.
How do you complain about Joba, Hughes and MO
A ploy by the Twins to throw Joba’s rhythm out of sync.
Interesting decision for Joe – Like Sterling pointed out, this isn’t a game against KC. These are clutch outs Andy has been getting, and although the pitch count isn’t up there, it is draining, mentally as well as physically. Do you let Andy stay in and risk one swing tying it, or do you go to a well-rested pen, Joba, Phil, and ultimatley Mo for even 4-5 outs?
Joe knows his team, and has been making winning decisions all year.
You never use a pitcher unless you have to, if this game does go into extras, we lose Joba because Joe took out Andy to early
“…foul ball to the protective cup.”
How the HELL do they know he’s wearing one?!? Did Skip and Ron feel all the Twins down before the game?
If you play left field, there’s no need for a cup!
What happened to Young?
Protective cup>…LOL..if he were wearing a protective cup his face wouldnt have looked like he had been shot.
Andy has run out of gas quickly in several games this year, but he still looks strong. Joe knows these guys better than I though, so I hope his confidence in Joba is rewarded. It would also be big if he could be counted on as a late inning weapon the rest of the way.
Second guessing now?
why would you call for a slider
that was a really bad slider, it was supposed to be in the dirt.
Yuck

Is it weird that I’m in my room giving Andy a standing O by myself?

I do stuff like that all the time. Not weird at all
I would be yelling tonight, but I am still too hungover
Was anyone else taken back by the little fact by Ron Darling about the Yankees having the 2nd most strikeouts in team history this season with 1260, record being 1266?
Interesting.
I’m officially getting nervous now.
You may now begin the second guessing please.
Terrible terrible 2-strike pitch.
thank you Joe, so now if Joba does not get out of this they will use coke and maybe Hughes, over managing again!!!!
why do we insist on pretending joba is a good pitcher?
Talk about leaving yourself open for second guessing. Lets hope it doesn’t get to that.
You people who post comments during the game on a two bit blog of a bankrupt small time newspaper need to get lives. Watch the game!
Joe G overmanaged. Andy was on a roll.
come on Jobber
C’mon Jobber.. Put him away!
Why does Chip Caray yell whenever the Twins get a hit??
Harris is on the fastball, this is the place for the slider down and away
Mehdi-
There was a lot of 1st guessing on this move to Joba.
joba???
Fat boy don’t got it tonight.
I don’t know, what happened to starter+Hughes+Mo=9 IP?
Stepping out now, I have faith in you, Joba. You can do it.
Dan @ , You wear a cup no matter where you play…..That’s true even at the HS level……
slider in dirt please
Come on Joba-
These fans are too loud. Shut them down!
come on joba.
suck it up .
get the hitter.
Let’s go, Joba. One more out!
Big pick by tex…
Let me know how the game turns out. I’ve gotta go get my instant billionaire lotto ticket.
I probably would have preferred Pettitte going a batter longer. But if Joba gets out of this, no harm no foul.
Tex saves another error. That’s about 100 this year.
That slider looks lousy tonight.
Teix just made a very difficult play look routine.

Great pick be Tex. He’s done that all year. Cash did a great job in recruiting him.
fastball up and in on this fool
How many times has Andy pitched more than 7 innings this year? Why go to long now?
Joba has to stay with the heat to this guy…
I really hope Joba gets out of this because I can’t for the life of me think what explanation Joe would have after the game for taking Andy out. C’mon Joba, reach back here.
Yeah Cuzzi!
So let me guess where Young fouled the ball. Off his cup?
What no match-up baseball and Damaso Marte?
that a boy joba-
now get one more and have a nice relaxing seat to watch the game.
LETS GO JOBA
put him away….no bad sliders
13 outs to go…
Not much movement on Joba’s FB I can see why he is in love with the curve

you earned it. Grab GB another six pack and get yourself some Milkbones. Stay away from the poodles.
This game is not ending 2-1
if Joba gets this out the Yankees will tack on some runs in the 8th, I can feel it.
STOP SHAKING OFF PITCHES!
joba – THROW HIM A FASTBALL…
C’mon Joba!
Sam or Chad,
You’ve got to ask, regardless of what happens, why you would pull a proven post-season pitcher after 6 1/3 innings, 3 hit ball? This simply doesn’t make sense.
Gotta go up and in with a fastball.

6 outs to get!
yeah Joba!
Phil Hughes and Mo.
Lets get some insurance runs!!!
Does Hughes automatically come in the 8th or can Joba start it off?
that was the 2007 version of the Joba slider, it’s been MIA in 2009…
good job by Joba, good block by Jorge, and hopefully some tack on runs in the 8th.
Uff, that was tense!
Nice strike three pitch and a gutsy call by Posada knowing it would be in the dirt.

Girardi was a genius.
He knows his team better than the nervous arm-chair pundits here
That was a fake GB. Not a typo to be found.
I like this, I remember 2nd guessing a lot of Torre’s moves in ‘96 and pretty much the more controversial the move the best the result.
well that ended well. Joe Girardi is rolling hot dice.
Insurance runs would be a good thing
Played baseball in high school and college….about cups…they take away a lot of pain…but it still hurts trust me…Delmon young had to be wearing a cup or else he would have been out of the game
Yeah, totally an old school slider by joba, nasty!
i had no idea there was a new thread…lol i was commenting to myself i guess! nice job(a)
That inning should help build Joba’s confidence.
He should also like the confidence Joe showed in him.

Sad but Melky has become an automatic out
Does Melky have a hit in this series?
please tell me they are skipping Coke now, and going straight to HUGHES
Do the umpires take lessons in artistic interpretations?
I’m using my one prediction for the night here.
If Jeter gets on – Damon is going deep.
“anyone for Insurance here?”
another run or two would be nice, but hughes and mariano might be all we need.
I wonder if Nathan will pitch the top of the 9th?
Phil gets a chance to redeem himself.
@Laura,
Melky had infield hit in 3rd or 4th inning
Well, A-Rod will bat in the 9th.
There should be some thunder between him, Tex and possibly Matsui.
You get the feeling we see rivera before the 8th is over??
hughes time
Hey guys,
FYI… Rockies/Phillies on TBS after the Yanks game. Get a chance to see the Big G in frigid cold temperatures!
I should preface that by saying that Big G probably won’t get an AB until after the 6th inning or so, so you don’t need to watch the game from beginning to end. But be sure to tune in to see the later innings to catch Big G’s pinch hit AB.

The world will never know
Melky needs to be benched
Melky had the 1st hit of the game plus had the hit in front of Jeter’s HR in game 1, isn’t that enough for a #9 hitter when the team isn’t scoring tons of runs?
Denise, Coke was the guy who didn’t give up 2 runs in game 2, why are you down on him?
# Laura – I want Matsui in pinstripes in 2010! October 11th, 2009 at 9:34 pm

“Why does Chip Caray yell whenever the Twins get a hit??”
Because he hates the Yankees. At least Ron isn’t biased.
______________________________________________________________
I would have left Andy in. Low pitch count and pitching a great game.
Hughes needs to come up huge here. I can’t afford another runner on base. Nervous….
Lets go Phil. I killed you the other night. Time to get back your Philthiness
Hughes for two outs… then batter to batter?
Melky has a couple hits this series..not many a couple though
Mauer is the 4th hitter this inning. It would be nice to have a 1-2-3.
BBFan – I agree about your point on Joba’s confidence.
One thing you need to know about Melky, he never does more than is absolutely necessary to win.

It’s not really sounds out of Snoopy that would concern me.
The Yankees should score some more runs the next inning.
6 more outs.
I will have heart attack soon.
What beef do Twins fans have with Jeter? Geeze
Man..we will need to hit better vs. the Angels..we can’t get any base hits…..however, reminds me of the championship teams, score just enough runs to win some games and then other games score alot….
Gardy is so much better than Melky it isin’t even funny
Gardy works the count, steals bases, can bunt for a hit, good 2-strike hitter, and puts pressure on the defense. He is an exciting player who can beat you in a number of ways. So much better than Melky who is good at nothing….
Yeah what is the reason for the Jeter Sucks chants? I can understand if they were booing AROD b/c everyone does but what do Minnesota Twins fans have against Jeter?
according to game cast..melky is hitting .333…
Damon, cano, swisher are hitting…. .091
6 more outs!!!
Mauer reminds me of Rod Carew, a hit machine out there.
a prediction-if Mauer hits it will be against Mo…
“melky had he infield single before jeter’s homer…”
Yes, that’s right. I forgot. Thanks.
Anyone else wondering where the Yankee offense is? I’m a little concerned considering the Angels are waiting in the wings (pardon the pun).
Hope this time the back punto off the plate
All fastballs to Punto please…
Huge inning here. Close ‘em down and score three in the 9th inning.
Phil walked Punto to start his troubles last game, no?
Nothing but heat to Punto. No need to fool around here.
MG October 11th, 2009 at 9:38 pm
a prediction-if Mauer hits it will be against Mo…
Mo I don’t think will let him beat him, experience counts in these situations
don’t worry about the yankee offense..give credit to the starting pitchers of the twins last two games..you don’t usally blow out teams in the playoffs..you got to be able to win 2-1 games…
Any opposing fan saying anything bad about Jeter is like saying something bad about Cal Ripken. IE – it just doesn’t make any sense.
But since Jeter is a Yankee, opposing fans feel it’s justifiable
Here here.
Hughes location isn’t good tonight, he’s missed the last two fastballs by a mile.
Joe from Long Island October 11th, 2009 at 9:39 pm
Phil walked Punto to start his troubles last game, no?
——-
He hung a curve and Punto dropped it in for a single. Nothing but heat today. He can’t catch up to Hughes’ fastball.
Crap.
uh oh
oh no
Hughes will lose AGAIN…..
Come on Phil…
Good pitching stops good hitting. Works both ways. Don’t worry about the Yankee offense. Red Sox pitching pretty much sucked. That was the Angels offense.
Leadoff double. Chip Carey can’t control his orgasms.
Hughes is worrisome after the breakdown on Friday. But we can’t abuse Mo, we may need him tomorrow.
If Hughes gives up a run here and the Yankees go on to win, is he still Joe’s eighth inning guy in the ALCS?
punto owns hughes…
Bunt?
That Pavano/windpipe comment just caused me to spit beer out of my nose.
Not a good way to start the inning. Need outs without Punto advancing.
Punto is one pesky dude.
Hughes is not sharp.
Phil not looking too reliable in this series

That’s why you don’t worry about the Yankees offense. Yankees pitching and defense do the job and the offense does just what it needs to.

Jeter!!!! No wonder the Twins fans don’t like him.

Phil is picking the wrong time to start slumping. If he doesn’t get his act together, the Yankees are going to have a hard time winning.
Hate to say it, but Hughes looks like a guy who can’t handle the playoff pressure.
That one is on the 3b coach not Punto. He gave him the stop sign after he hit the bag.
Where is Mo?????

Great decision by Jeter, great throw by Jorge, and a great tag by A-Rod.
Hughes won the one game the Yankees won in 2007, the one where he relieved Clemens. I think that game was kinda important.
He was due a poor outing or two. Stop being so fickle.
——————–
The “or two” part is not very comforting. You can not have a bad outing or TWO in the postseason esp. in a 5 game series. He has got to get it together
Don’t forget that that play took two perfect throws and a fast tag. Great play all around.
Mo vs mauer regardless
cabrera battling hughes again…
Poor outing or two?!?!
His curve has zero bite, and he can’t finish off any hitters when he gets ahead 0-2. Some guys can do it in pressure situations and some guys can’t. Hughes can’t.
more impressed with the great throw by posada
Well IF he gets to second and Mauer coming up it’s the dreaded first base open and do you walk the winning run situation again. Geez
great play..horrible base running…
hughes has no secondary pitches right now, he is turning in a FB only pitcher
lets get Mo in. Phil looks shaky.

Joe’s thinking take no prisoners….
Mariano v. Mauer…
if your a casual fan this is a moment…if your a yankee or twin fan your biting your nails!
I like the phillies in that one…totally off topic…
Mo needs to be nasty right now..
Heads up play by Jeter. Great throw by Posada.
skip, it’s 950 eastern time now…
did Hughes throw anything other than a fastball?
here we go
Erica, YES! YES! Just as I refreshed, the opening chords began to play, and at the same time, I saw your post!
In sync, girl!
I think when Jeter threw the ball Punto had not stopped yet. The really play there was Posada’s accurate throw to 3rd. I just watched the play again, Punto should have known that he has to slow down when the 3b coach is giving no signal.
Phil doing his best Papelbon impression…
YOU CANT THROW ALL FASTBALLS!!!!!!!!!

again people…nice play by jeter but let me ask: what else was he supposed to do, throw to 1st??????????????? u people would make jeter taking a dump into something amazing!!!!
yea he coulda threw to first and let the tying run score
It appeared that the Twin’s 3rd base coach waved Punto coming around 3rd base…
erica–haha. i can hear it in my head and i’m humming along to myself
Well, Dimwit, most middle infielders would have held the ball and ran it back to the pitcher. He also froze the runner at first base.

Hate to say it, but Hughes looks like a guy who can’t handle the playoff pressure.
============================
Were you asleep during game 3 of the ALDS in 2007?
that was a bad pitch by Mo, he got away with it…
I don’t think he sees anything good here, probable walk as he doesn’t swing at bad pitches. Good battle
im not big on posada, but his throw was SWEET
let’s see if mauer is in the same league as arod…
If Mauer really is the Natural he’ll line a foul ball off Phil Cuzzi.
wow… he missed
Broken bat baby!!!
NICE!!! Put that in your pipe CHIP!!!
So who’s worse….McCarver or Chip Carey????
That’s how Mo does it!

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!MO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That cutter was just pure NASTY
Vintage!! Broken bat yes
Mauer is still taking splinters out of his on that one.
Ralphie your not biting your nails since this isn’t a must win game. Your sitting here thinking the Yankees will win it and your good with that. I am anyway.
Congratulations to the MVP, Joe Mauer. See you in April.
Mo snapping bats with that cutter like he’s been doing for 12 years
That’s why he’s the best ever
Anyone recording this go back and watch Posada and Hughes do a synchronized jump after Alex tags Punto. It’s pretty funny.
Wow. I love the reaction from the Twins dugout following the Punto play!! Some of the guys were ripping their hair out!!!
Just simply the best!
the cutter!!!
The 9:41 update has my speechless.
i guess not…
That was a great job by Posada. He wanted that first pitch way inside. Rivera threw it on the outside corner and Mauer just missed it. Then Jorge took a few steps towards Mo shaking his head “NO!!!” and then Mo got it inside.
Rivera needs to be investigated, That pitch to Mauer was illegal
MO………….AKA The Buzzsaw……..:)
The supposed “fundamentally sound” team is playing far from “fundamentally sound” this series.
Well, Dimwit, most middle infielders would have held the ball and ran it back to the pitcher. He also froze the runner at first base.

Don’t waste your breath. I just was on another forum today where they were railing about how Jeter is nothing special. Let the losers continue to live under their rock.
GB7 – I was going to post something, but I’ll let you.

It’s Intangible…
Gardenhire Glowering…
Penitent Punto…
Hughes still needs to learn to “show” his curveball early in the count. Right now it seems he gets excited once he gets to 0-2 and doesn’t have much of a gameplan, this allows hitters to keep on fouling off pitches and Hughes will eventually throw a breaking ball that the hitter has been waiting on.
9:41 post. There are no words.

we’re watching a game here like we were last night and you are trying to make points that jeter is ordinary.
last night you pulled the same nonsense.
cal ripken himself pointed out that jeter should have been the cut off at third last night.
you have been refuted by none other than cal ripken.

Johnny and I had a pretend fight after his last AB. I am going to have to yell at him again
God, Damon needs a rest…come on!
Terrible day for Damon today
Damon looks lost
I had the good fortune to be in attendance for “the flip” game. Jeter and Posada now again silencing a screaming-to-stunned home crowd (with Jorge again having hit a solo HR for the single-run edge).
This lead has to stay intact for symmetry’s sake,.
wow, Damon, so bad, so bad…
Damon can’t wait to get the heck out of here.
The next series can’t come soon enough for Damon.
4 k’s? ouch!
Once again, please dont sign him for next year. Bring back Matsui and get someone that can actually play LF.
Damon
looking pathetic, he better step it up if we make it to the next series
Damon owes us something in the ALCS.
It’s not funny John
Chip Caray is the trough of announcers. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t even have a normal play-by-play inventory job.
Not a single BB for the Yankees so far.
Erica, your PBF is making me mad.
4 K’s for Damon.. Not Good!

Damon. Bench time
I wonder who’ll play the Dodgers tougher the Phils or Rockies.
Damon wearing the golden sombrero tonight :-/
Ohh Damon, that golden sombrero shows how much you are struggling lately…
I think Damon needs to snuggle with Yankee Snoopy more than GB does tonight…
this game is messing up my Sunday schedule-Curb Your Enthusiasm, Dexter, Californication. All DVRed, fortunately.
That’s high.
Punto probably feels as bad as Holloday did the other day.
none of those pitches were in TBS’s strike zone
These umps are a riot… they have no idea what a ball is
Erica,
Are you putting your PBF on a short term probation for a few days after tonight’s performance.
Chip Carey throes in a “Justin Morneau not here” excuse for the Twins.
Johnny Damon and Kevin Long have some quality time ahead of them this week
Hopefully Damon gets it going next game

Erica,
Are you putting your PBF on a short term probation for a few days after tonight’s performance.
****
No. He needs my love and support.
Someone needs to defend him on this board!
Hughes might be a little tired. We take care of business tonight, he’ll have plenty of time to rest up.
Good. Put Tex on base so Alex can drive him home with a bomb to right center.
You’ve got to just laugh at the consistent stupidity displayed on this blog with the Melky-bashing. Not only does he have more hits than 1/3 of the starters, he’s tied with 2 others and is just one away from another.
In other words, if his name isn’t Jeter, A-Rod or Posada, then he isn’t hitting well this series.
But yes, as always, it’s all Melky’s fault. Imbeciles.
They better pitch around alex.
what is this 9:41 post you all are talking about….
I thought they would walk A-Rod
JD’s streaky. He’ll be back. He had his best swings of the night in that AB.
Why does Caray keep lamenting the loss of morneau? They played like crap with him, and when he went down they stormed into the playoffs.
How come Caray doesn’t lament the loss of Wang? :/
I’m sure he’ll right himself for the Angels series.
Funny stat of the day. Johnny Damon batted .171 in the 2004 AlCS.
mac daddy is a troll.
doesn’t like jeter.
mac daddy you are not only a troll .
you also don’t know the game. you don’t even know simple cut off positions.
me , pat m, and others all pointed off proper cut offs to you for that jeter play last night.
i’ve posted a video 5 times showing cal ripken saying you are wrong and showing you were wrong.
you have anything to say about that ?
you can try to ignore me, but i’m a little hard to ignore.
the only explanation that you’re back at it again tonight is that you’re a troll.
i think hughes is just a little too amped up…..it is hurting his command..
Chip Carey needs to tell the viewers that the Yankees are without their 2 time 19 game winning injured Wang……..
What is up with Damon, he has been awful this past month?
Just going to point out the playing of Bruce Springsteen at the Metrodome
I’m not calling for a 2 run blast from Rodriguez, but, I will take a single or a double in the gap. another homer is asking a lot.
PEYTON Manning just goes 94 yards in 6 plays in 28 seconds in the 2 minute drill for a TD.
“Chip Caray is the trough of announcers. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t even have a normal play-by-play inventory job.”

Yes, but he hit the Grand Slam in Game 7 that poked all of the air out of Yankee Stadium
After Yanks win WS this yr. Cash has to start mixing in some young athletic talent to go with vets like Jeter, AROD, Posada.
Out:
Damon 36
Matsui 36
Molina 33
Nady 30 (coming off of injury)
Sam was speechless at 9:41
If we play like this in the ALCS, we’re going to be swept.
Would Girardi dare bring in Gardner here??? to pinch-run for Tex?

Agreed. Strong starting pitching, timely power, great defense and shutdown relief is a recipe for disaster.
ironically I have TNT in High-Def..not TBS…why is that
no some said I could count correctly
big spot for the yanks to get at least 1 run in.
they have 2 cracks at it!
cmon!
Matsui is due big time.
That is the difference with A-Rod this year. In the past he would have swung at that last pitch. This year he would take walk and leave to the next batter.
The playoffs is about winning close games…some of the people in here are just ignorant about playoff baseball…no one really gets blown out.
Now with that said, Hideki double in the gap and finish them off, get us the insurance with the carpet field.
I love it when they bring in a lefty to face Matsui, I think it irritates him and he gets lots of hits…
You people who post comments during the game on a two bit blog of a bankrupt small time newspaper need to get lives. Watch the game!
or spell either
Matsui absolutely kills lefties. When will the opposing managers start respecting this man?
I have resigned to the fact that TBS announcers are so bad, that I have to listen to Sterling/Waldman on MLB Gameday Audio..
Okay, enough of the “who’s on first routine” with the 9:41 post.
Although, the actress Kelly Hu has lots of integrity despite her confusing last name.

Don’t love how long Mo has been sitting. I hope we get some runs out of this
Excellent at bat by Godzilla. Time for Jorge to get his battery mate some breathing room.
gotta get a run here, if they get out of this it gives them momentum going into the ninth. Girardi needs to play for one just to keep them on their heels.
“Real Yankee fans root for ALL Yankees.”

So much for the Twins’ lefty specialist. Gotta blow the game open.

So, JORGE…DO NOT HIT INTO A DP…please!!! A long fly ball would be OK, but a bases clearing double would be better!
Let’s see if Nathan is as nervous as he was the other night.
why didn’t they go to Nathan to start the inning?
there is no tomorrow Minny.
Trexler=Pete Abe
now whose over-managing? 4 pitchers in one inning? A new pitcher for a switch hitter? A lefty to face lefty killer Matsui?
Girardi is done managing for the evening. What else can he do? Sit back and watch Joe.
so if Jorge, the object of so much abuse on this blog for most of the season, comes through with the killer hit here, will there at least be some grudging acknowledgement of his contribution to the Yankees?
probably not, but who cares…
Okay, Girardi has to pinch run for Matsui here…I am not sure with whom…but it has to be done…
Trexler
You are wrong. This is a very tight informed community of Yankee fans.

I just said the same thing to my buddy.
I like a tight game anyway. Rather have it end 2-1. You can’t have a spine of marshmallow.

He can hit up a storm. Just can’t catch worth a damn. Now is someone going to rip up my Yankee fan card?
****
Yes. Me
Did you not notice he was behind the plate for a 1 run Pettitte gem??
Mo WILL pitch the 9th..
“Can Chip sound any LESS happy that the Yanks just scored??? HACK!!!!!”
He’s doing his Orsillo impersonation…
what is up with nathan
sam,
Did you read that blog entry (I forget where I saw it), but “fisted” would be in a Chip Caray drinking game.
I would say 18…(The Ghost)…would love for Swish to nail a granny here to really end it…
Big AB for Nick
not only did they get a insurance run.. they got 2!!!
Mo will still get the save no matter how many runs they score.
Winning the Central…
That was the Twins’ destiny…
Ours is Dynasty!!!!!
I rooted for the pinstripes with both Johnson and Brown, Erica.
It was hard.

gusb, Posada caught 2 full games this series, how many runs did the Twins score so far in 17 innings?
The Yanks have come up huge in this series when it really counted……..so it doesn’t matter that they haven’t pounded the ball. Plus, is it me, or is this team making some ridiculous defensive plays?
Swiffer.
Series MVP????????????Arod or Punto??

Too many appearances. just like Papebon
TBS announcers reacting as if someone died. Almost silent in broadcast booth!!
this carl pavano love fest is bizarre…
Nathan and Papelbom implode on the same day. Goes to show you how hard it is to stay a dominant closer. These guys come and go, but none ever measure up to Mo.
Let’s not get too over-confident…a 3 run lead could easily be jeopardized
Get this over and be merciful to the Twins. Even if they took tonight they didn’t have the horses to go any further.
“Nathan doing his best Paplesmear impression….LOVE IT!!”
Nathan is better than him. He just ran into the wrong guys twice. Namely Teix, Al & Georgy. No shame there.
Something the Yanks have been doing that bodes well for the Anaheim series – they are taking advantage of mistakes by the other team. That, and scoring not just on HRs.
Though the dingers are nice.

Memo to the LoHud blog:
It doesn’t matter how many runs the Yankees score here, Mo pitches the 9th, it’s the ALDS, remember?
Shouldn’t Mo be exercising?
Mo will close this out.
So, A-rod will be the MVP of the ALDS.
Well deserved.
i wonder when tickets will go onsale. i think i might drive down to L.A. to see the game. Anyone in the bay area want to go?
I am feeling bad for the twins now.
so those who kept saying where is our offensive, lets recap 7 runs game 1, 5 runs game 2 and now 4 runs game 3….not bad, not bad at all….and counting
To be honest, Joe should have someone up just in case the long inning stiffens him up…it will be 4 full days off but still…
SWISHer couldn’t even get a sac fly

LOL..I like that one!!
as bad as randy johnson was with the yanks…he did win 17 games I think two years in a row…he was terrible in the post season though
Gardenhire looks fried
Another clowny AB from the clown Nick Swisher, who capped it off by blowing a nice big bubble.
Closing down the Metrodome. Last out turn off the lights.
How intimidating must Mo be to a rookie or 2nd year player? Imagine growing up watching this guy dominate the post season then all of the sudden you are facing him.
“I suggest he start with “Baseball For Idiots” and then graduate to “Baseball For Dummies”.”
thank you gb 7-
i saw the book” baseball for dummies” for a quarter at a book sale and i bought it for a red sox friend of mine as a joke.
before i gave it to him, i looked through it.
it’s by joe morgan and is actually surprisingly good.
so bottom line, i think it might be a little too advanced for mac daddy .
“Let’s not get too over-confident…a 3 run lead could easily be jeopardized”
Agreed.
Man, do the Twins suck or what
Don’t know why anyone wanted to face Detroit instead of this team.
3 outs left
Ugh, bad job……………..
Mo was sitting for awhile, so hopefully he won’t be too rusty
Bench melky already

It wasn’t so much what he did or didn’t do.
He was either really good or really bad. And his attitude stunk the entire way
there is no MVP in this round, but it would have obviously been A Rod.
Take nothing away from the way that Pavano pitched tonight. He and Pettitte were both outstanding.
Ah, here it is. Bats Blog entry on the terrible TBS coverage:
http://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/.....-coverage/
Another excellent demonstration of knowledge of the strike zone by Melky.
Thanks for the comment bodhisattva. Although the extra runs mess with the symmetry to “the flip” game, I’ll take them gladly.
Great inning. Now, what did Mo do to keep warm? The only thing I worry about is the long delay between innings for him.
bottom of the lineup really needs to step up in the ALCS
Add this dump to Atlanta’s Fulton County Stadium as stadiums the Yankees have unceremoniously closed down.
gusb, Posada caught 2 full games this series, how many runs did the Twins score so far in 17 innings?
About as many as they did all season. The Twins didn’t exactly hurt the Yankees this season. Big deal. Wait til they face the Angels with noodle arm catching.
3 more outs!!!
Time to check out the Rockies game…Oh wait, I forgot, we still need 3 more outs.
“Did you not notice he was behind the plate for a 1 run Pettitte gem??”
He didn’t know who was catching because Posada had a mask on.
Angels are an easier foe than Boston
Did you really want to face “Gibson” Beckett and Lester 4 times in a 7 game series?
If the Yankees win this one, there are three things that need a really good look:
(1) Damon is in a black hole, continued from September.
(2) Swisher is in a slightly less black hole.
(3) Most importantly, Phil Hughes needs to regain movement/command of his fastball. Maybe he’s too amped.
If they can fix Hughes, I like their chances. Just like their entire season, he is the key.
agreed Randy Johnson was a total jerk..plus he gave up a billion homeruns…
randy l.

Get the lead-off hitter out…then we are golden!
Finish them off Mo
There better be a celebration after this game.
We haven’t won a 1st round series in 5 years… they deserve to celebrate.
drink!
Hmmm…here we go…
>Get the lead-off hitter out…then we are golden!
Settle for something else.

Randy, it’s a perfect fit for him. If ever there was a complete idiot, it’s him.
“Take nothing away from the way that Pavano pitched tonight. He and Pettitte were both outstanding.”
I wish he would have done that for us. =/
That’s not how to start the inning, Mo!
lets go mo…
here we go with the bloop garbage..
People complaining as the Yanks are about to win their first postseaon series in five years?
Makes you wonder.
That’s all they get
Yah right, Swisher sucks. He drove in the go ahead run in the first game and made a heck of a play yesterday……also, in the first game, didn’t he make a great throw home to prevent a run? There are other ways to contribute to a game besides getting a hit…..
if mo blows this, ill stop posting!!
mac daddy-
you afraid to debate?
i do believe you are afraid to debate me on the jeter play.
i was ragging on you all last night and the yankees won , so now i just have to keep doing it.

This must be at least the 5th time he’s said “fisted”….
I’ll definitely partake in the drinking game when I watch the NLCS.
Where was that?
Ump..where was that pitch?
Stay humble ppl, this is still a baseball team we are playing.
WHERE WAS THAT LAST PITCH???
Pittsburgh Yankee fan, I think it’s unfair to say Swisher is not contributing. He’s been involved in 3 very good and very important defensive plays in this series.
Zone crunching here on Mo…As usual…needs to jam these lefties…
Pavano was outstanding for the Yankees. Well, he stood out, anyway. well, technically he sat out, but whatever.
A hit those Mo hits
This strikezone… boggles the mind.
Abreu drives in big runs in the playoffs… Swisher makes great plays
LOL
That’s one.
come on mo
show time.
one pitch at a time.
bad series for kubel.
streeaaaaker.
JFC some moron ran at Mo
what a great pitch by Mo there…
TBS showed the IDIOT running into the field…what a bunch of losers..
Some creep ran onto the field.
Uh oh, some crazy on the field.
Oh how great would it have been if the weird guy with the hair from earlier in the game was the one who ran on the field.
My Steel Reserve is chilling in the fridge…2 Outs Away from sweet, sweet goodness
boo on TBS for cutting away from the streaker. lol.
whats with the stupid fan???
Ohhhhh, he almost made it.
well done.
What a clown.
LOL a rabid twin fan runs on the filed, who knew they existed?
tv is not supposed show people running on the field
YES never shows that crap, but these idiots do.
I can’t believe Pavano ran back on the field. What a hot dog.
All I can say is idiot to that man
we can only hope they go Tony Soprano on that idiot who ran out on the field, he’s probably a troll on LoHud…
Was that fan wearing a Phillies jersey?
lol
Wow! they usally don’t show that…what an idiot.
Wonder why they broke from policy and flashed to the kid climbing the fence.
Weird.
Lol at TBS. Usually they don’t broadcast fan interference on TV.
PETE A. JUST RAN ON THE FIELD SHOUTING SOMETHING ABOUT A ROD!!!!
field not filed!! Okay, no more wine.
Where the hell was Shelley Duncan when we need him…lol
What would possess some idiot to run out on the field like that?
Was that JimPR One running on the field?
I forget how nervous playoff baseball makes me! BLARGH!
Send that drunken Twinkie fan to a ‘Sota Jail cell
I can’t believe they showed the crazy on National TV
Lets go Mo. Focus.
Jeff…lol
You definitely have to give the Twins A for effort.

It did look like he had a Phillies jersey on.
Anyone remember the Padres fan that ran onto the field and slid across home plate in 98′? He was wearing camo pants, no shirt – somehow I remember that.
whats with the lack of updates fellas?
they shud make him walk home without clothing in that freezin minny weather
How scary for the Yankees…remember how some crazy fans attacked that Royal’s first base coach?
I wonder if I’ll see that guy down here at Hammond Field for Spring Training? They sell lots of beer down here to fight off the hot sun.
“You definitely have to give the Twins A for effort.”
In Punto’s case, TOO much effort.
“whats with the lack of updates fellas?”
Newspaper deadlines.
Nothing to hit. he will swing at anything
That’s two.
lol at Caray who got so excited with that single. What a tool.

the cutter still cutting…
Mo is the best there ever was, best there ever will be
I love seeing Jorgie standing up with 2 strikes, Mo almost always gets a K on that pitch, they’ve been doing that for 15 years.
I think thats an old school Minnesota Jersey.
The Steel reserve is on the counter, ready to be opened. Come On!
Chip Caray is NOT a “Chip” off the Old Block…his Dad was a much better announcer than this goof

Good news – No more Chip Carey
Bad News – 2 series worth of Joe Buck.
That guy sitting next to mauer is like, “Dude, let me throw you a party when you get your mvp. We’ll play the Caray drinking game while we watch the NLCS”
So, like, which Twin gets to take the “baggies” home? Did OC realize that they aren’t THAT kind of baggies when he signed up for them?
Ballgame!!!!!!!!!
gonna be a long wait until the series starts on friday…
Yay!
Bring on the Angels!
3 down, 8 to go.
Way to go, TEAM!!!!!
Awesome!! Woohoo!!!

WhooHoo!!!!
No big surprise.
Congratulations Yankees.
SWEET!
3 wins down!! 8 more to go, boys and girls!
They should break out the Champagne big time for this, first time in 6 years back to the ALCS
We are ALDS champions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yankee / angels
here we go !!!
Once it hits your lips!
I think we would all agree, it is more than possible to post here and still not miss a second of the game.
Congratulations Yankee fans! Let’s enjoy our first trip to the ALCS since 2003! How ridiculous is that?
I think we know who the ALDS MVP is???
ALCS, baby!
5 years
Yowza! Phase 1 accomplished!
Thank you Punto
YES!!!!!! GO YANKS!!!!!! Eat it Chip!!
I mean 2004, duh.
Attaboy! bring on the Angels!
Another Pettitte win and Rivera save in postseason play!
What is with the subdued celebration? I guess they are waiting to go crazy when we win it all.
woo hoo!!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats, Yanks!!
Congratulations to the NYY organization, manager, coaches, players and fans. Beutifully played series.
I feel so bad beating this Twins team.
Every hit Arod had produced an RBI
That’s three.
And Mauer sits dreaming of his future days in real pinstripes.
Yikes… Friday – not until Friday countdown.
You people who post comments during the game on a two bit blog of a bankrupt small time newspaper need to get lives.
Good this feels good… I remember this feeling…
Andy Pettitte was HUGE tonight….he did an excellent job.
That series was a professional beat down.
Wild guess: A-Rod=Series MVP.
8 more.
Congratulations to the Twins and their fans, too. They’re a fine young team. Just a little short. Heck of a series, though.
WHOOHOO!!
Wow. Now I can exhale!
Congrats to the Yankees.
Now, onward.
HURRAY!!!!!
Ok. Now time to beat the Angels.
Arod, Tex, Po, Jeter, and the hitters were all great. But, make no mistake, this was won by pitching. That is what sets this team apart from the Yankees’ teams of the last 5 years.
YES!
You people who post comments during the game on a two bit blog of a bankrupt small time newspaper need to get lives. Watch the game!
there is no MVP.
no series MVP in ALDS, Arod also crushed Minnesota in 2004 ALDS

Why? They just aren’t that good. Lesser teams lose.
I bet the Yankees don’t feel bad.
Awww he’s so cajun/southern sounding.
Andy interview! Yesssss.
Awesome win! No baseball until Friday??? AHH
“25 guys, 1 mission”
yankees are keyed down.
i like it.
very businesslike.
Dear Loo-sers,
How about them Sawks?
TRISHA!!!
High-fives to you, girl!
Onto the ALCS!
Me, too Randy – the Yanks don’t need to show up the Twins on their home field.
They’re alead tearing the place up!
DUH YANKEES WIN!!!
You people who post comments on a two bit blog of a bankrupt small time newspaper need to get lives.
This Twins team was impressive. They pretty much had bench players at every position but 1 and they won the Central division and played the Yankees tough. If not for a couple of baserunning mistakes this series might be very different.
Okay, can someone explain why they have to dig up home plate right now?
Hugs to everyone.
Hello ALCS
Congrats to Andy. Hopefully he breaks the record soon. Like this weekend.
Don’t expect anyone in the media to give us credit for beating the Twins tomorrow morning.
They will bring up the payroll difference and the blown call on Friday for us winning.
Having to wait until Friday is crazy.

And what exactly are you doing right now?
Is YES not having a post-game show?
Andy is amazing – how clutch is that man? I’m so proud of him – to think we’ve had the chance to watch he, Jeter, Mo and Jorge grow up before our eyes……..and Alex is reminding everyone just how GREAT a player he is
I would like to second your sentiments about the Twins.
They can celebrate as much as they want in the clubhouse. It does not even need to be cleaned up afterwords!!!
Umm– 5ish days ?? minutes until Game 1!!!!!!
Okay, can someone explain why they have to dig up home plate right now?
============================
Probably the last time ever the Metrodome is in “baseball mode”?
I want coverage of the celebration.
YES better show it. We got to see the Dodgers celebration yesterday, now I want to see ours.
Show the game highlights, analysis etc. later.
That’s fine with me Erick, when the anti-Yankee crowd is invoking the payroll excuse I know my team is ROLLIN!
Twins played with a lot of heart. They have nothing to be ashamed of.
Mac Daddy, I now agree with you, Friday seems so far away….
Boy they wasted no time digging up the plate.

Go troll on boston.com.
Francessa will talk about how tough the Angels series will be, right from the beginning of the show tomorrow. He will not even reflect on this series.
I mean, he isin’t going to talk about Giants-Raiders all day.
Erica,
Please keep up the countdown this week, it keeps me focused.
Congrats to the Yankees.
And nice try by the Twins. They played us tough all season and postseason.
I’m glad that we tacked on because the look on Punto’s face (that they KEPT showing) was excruciating.
Kubel was a huge reason for their surge, but he had a tough, tough series. Did they scout him well? IDK. 9 strikeouts in one 3 game series is unheard of.
Pavano pitched well, but it’s hard to flip this lineup 3 times without giving up anything.
I also forgot how it feels to win a playoff series!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
“Don’t expect anyone in the media to give us credit for beating the Twins tomorrow morning.”
Um, what exactly was your contribution again?
You people who post comments during the game on a two bit blog of a bankrupt small time newspaper need to get lives.
A-Roid and Jeter making out in the locker room. Who would’ve thought?
Who expected 3 Division Series sweeps. I hope Rockies/Phillies goes 5. It’s going to be weird not having any baseball until Thursday and Friday.
Wonder what Mike Mussina is thinking right now.
I wonder if the Twins will sell the fans little ‘baggies’ made from the outfield ‘wall’, like Yankee-Steiner does with yankee dirt????????
“YankeesWFAN: Moron runs onto the field. ARod ran to the mound to protect Mariano. I like it.”
We got each other’s back.
Pat M -
I know you said something about wearing a cup @ all levels. I play college ball – yea, all the infielders+catcher wear cups. Half the outfielders wear one, maybe 1 or 2 of the pitchers do.
K?
If anyone was looking for a postgame, I couldn’t find one on YES either. That being said, MLB TV does have one going.
Does anyone here understand Spanish?
Am I angry at you Joba non-believers. You have watched him pitch for almost 3 years and you can’t believe that he can’t pitch one inning successfully. Being a reliever is so much easier than being a starter.
If you are worried about anyone it should be Hughes. Mo has had to rescue him for the 3rd out in the 8th inning twice. Thank God Mo is Mo.
Andy pitched great. I was hoping he would go longer but I, like Trisha, believe that Joe knows his players better than we do.
Congratulations to the 2009 Yankees. Next step: Angels.
