Vegas is a Yankees fan

The Yankees were odds-on favorites to win the World Series at the start of the postseason and their sweep of the Twins did nothing to change that.

Though there are tons of web sites with slightly different odds, most places have the Yankees at basically an even-money proposition to win the World Series at this point, with the Angels and Dodgers both being about 3 1/2-to-1 and the Phillies at 4-1.

In other words, you’re not getting rich betting the Bombers. Save your money for the Powerball and just enjoy the games.

    Nice.

I wonder how many times in baseball history the preseason favorite actually DID win the WS.

  2. Backbench October 13th, 2009 at 10:29 pm

    Great ‘factoid’ care of SI:

“28 opposing right-handers have started at Yankee Stadium in the past four months and only three came away with a win: Roy Halladay, Chris Tillman and Kevin Millwood, and in each case they were supported by 10 runs.”

They favor Yankees to win WS too.

You’re getting better than even money if you bet the Yankees before the playoffs began, however. ;)

What does everyone think of this?
Scoiscia said that a lefty either Saunders or Kazmir would start game 2 so that Weaver could start at home where he is better.
    —————————————
I would assume that would be Kazmir starting game 2. So assuming that Molina is going to catch AJ then Posada could be the DH. Numbers against Kazmir, Posada 11-25 .440 avg, Matsui 5-28 .170 avg. At least that helps the offense and isn’t a hard decision to sit Matsui. Matsui pinch hits as soon as AJ is done pitching.

  6. Wait till the ALCS October 13th, 2009 at 10:37 pm

Kazmir is not starting game 2. Saunders is.

I figured as much. No way were they going with two RHP for the first two games at our place.

    Thanks for digging that up.

  9. bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes October 13th, 2009 at 10:43 pm

Kazmir, as far as I know, was never said to be pitching Game 2, BTW.

It was Lackey and Weaver, originally.

  10. Wait till the ALCS October 13th, 2009 at 10:43 pm

I predict a Yankees sweep. Angels are very good, but the Yanks are better. If our pitchers are all on a roll, we’re unbeatable. I think we’re on that roll.

Game 1 walkoff, Game 2 1 run game, no walkoff, game three Yanks win easy, game 4 Yanks win close (1 or 2 runs, perhaps break it open late).

    My BOLD prediction.

  13. 100 pitches of fun... October 13th, 2009 at 10:48 pm

Well Posada is 2-4 against Saunders and Matsui is 1-1. Saunders splits are .257 lefties vs .287 righties. So I would still go with Posada. I would be surprised if Girardi sat him since you want to get another righty in the lineup.

Argh. Listening to the famous Stark podcast where he said he guesses he’s stuck with the Yankees. Talking about how the Yankees have that special [aura] something going on.

You know what? I’ve had a special feeling about this Yankee team all season long. And you know what? The Yankees have said this is a special team, too! Guess who else had a special team? The Colorado Rockies. So, do only the most special teams advance? I guess we have to hope that we’re more special than the Angels.

  25. bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes October 13th, 2009 at 10:56 pm

Ah, didn’t see that. I saw a report where it said it would be Lackey/Weaver, because they wanted their “No 1 and No 2″ In the first two games.

On another site, we were discussing how weird it was that the Angels weren’t pitching one of their lefties in Yankee Stadium.

100 pitches….yeah, one would have thought as much.

Ah well, we’ll still kick their ***. We’ll just do it from the other side of the plate, and it won’t make a bit of difference to Cano and Matsui.

I guess Scioscia is trying to go the secretive route…

  32. Wait till the ALCS October 13th, 2009 at 11:03 pm

Do we run the table? Hmmmm…Depends. Vs. Dodgers, yes. Vs. Phillies, we lose one game (Game 4, up 3-0; Cliff Lee pitches 8 shutout inings, Lidge loads the bases with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth but gets at line drive right at him to get out of it) but still win in five.

However, since I think the Dodgers win the NLCS, yes, we run the table.

  33. bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes October 13th, 2009 at 11:03 pm

  34. Betsy October 13th, 2009 at 11:03 pm

Bodh, me too, lol – I love being able to relax for a few days; in fact I need this break. Part of the fun of the post-season is the anticipation that builds and the analysis and over-analysis of each team and all the players. So, I’m fine with the break although I understand the players are used to playing basically every day.

  35. Wait till the ALCS October 13th, 2009 at 11:04 pm

Also, if we win the WS, I wil be “Wait till we win it Again”.

I’d like to point out that the credit for that name goes to Nick in SF.

  38. 100 pitches of fun... October 13th, 2009 at 11:05 pm

I just really hope the offense wakes up. Especially the guys at the bottom of the order. They are going to have to score runs to win this series. The Angels swing the bats unlike the Twins.

  39. Wait till the ALCS October 13th, 2009 at 11:06 pm

    Yanks hit LHP fine.

But you’re right. Sweep or no sweep, we haven’t beaten the Angels YET.

  40. Betsy October 13th, 2009 at 11:06 pm

M, I told you – it was horrible, and I heard it live, lol. Jayson should just change his pick – I don’t think the Yankees care if he picks them or not and now he just ticks me off. I don’t believe in destiny garbage, but if I did, there is plenty of proof to believe the Yankees are the chosen ones. In any case, the games will be won on the diamond – it will all come down to ability and execution, not fate.

  41. bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes October 13th, 2009 at 11:06 pm

I love the break, because our older dudes get extra rest – like Damon – Hughes and BP arms get a break.

Also gives one time to study match-ups and look forward to the thing.

  42. Betsy October 13th, 2009 at 11:07 pm

The Angels didn’t swing the bats until late in game 2 and game 3………..I realize it’s easy to pick apart the Yankees because we follow them, but although I respect the Angels immensely, I’m not going to make them into some flawless team incapable of failure.

  43. Wait till the ALCS October 13th, 2009 at 11:07 pm

We do hit ‘em fine, but I’d rather have Jorge, Tex and Swish hitting LH. Melky has started lunging again LH, so I’m happy when he’s batting RH, because he stays inside the ball better.

  50. 100 pitches of fun... October 13th, 2009 at 11:14 pm

A key will be getting into their bullpen early. All of these post season closers have given up runs to cost their teams a game, in this series it will be Fuentes’ time. If he even gets into a save situation.

  51. CR9 October 13th, 2009 at 11:15 pm

Still cannot believe Joe Torre cared so little as to not get our guys off the field with the appearance of those midges.

  52. Abdababdaserser October 13th, 2009 at 11:18 pm

I think the reason why pitching seems so much better in the post season is due to the long layoffs between series.

Baseball is played just about every day, few days off for the whole season, then it stops cold while waiting for the various series to start up.

Pitchers aren’t as affected because many of them are on regular rest or slightly more rest.

This layoff can affect the batter’s timing, while the pitching is still in normal mode. Just look at what had happened to the Rockies after they had that long layoff from sweeping, then sitting in the cold.

I understand why they don’t move up games especially when there are two divisions going. Once both the series are decided though why not move the schedule ahead? Same with the WS. What if both the NL and AL sweep their division championships? Another long layoff for both teams, weather getting colder which isn’t conducive for playing baseball.

Friday can’t get here soon enough for me. I want to get this party started.

  53. Tom in N.J. October 13th, 2009 at 11:20 pm

The Yankees as a team have a .846 ops against LHP.

Betsy, I currently live in North Central NJ, but we’re staying in a hotel near the GWB for Games 1 & 2 (and Jets Sunday home game) because even that amount of traveling is grueling when the games drag on so long and the stakes are so high.

This down time is actually precious. I’m in hiding, even though there’s a break, so I can pretend I’m Baudelaire or something, laying low, watching the world go by as spectator, and collect my thoughts.

It’s like going into boot camp or something once it gets rolling. My artist/non-baseball friends don’t even bother to call me at this time of year. I get emails: “When will it be over…?”

  55. m October 13th, 2009 at 11:22 pm

    Betsy,

Stark doesn’t want to change his pick because he knows he’ll look like a fool.

So, he’s doing the contrarian pick. All of them, their heart says one thing, but their mouths say another.

In the 2005 ALDS, Alex had a .133 BAA the Angels but had a .435 OBP. If their approach is the same this time, he needs to be willing to only swing at strikes and take his walks.

Matsui and Posada will be important in this series if Scioscia decides not to pitch to Arod in big spots. The Yanks got away with that in the Twins series with Mauer. Most of Mauer’s hits were singles. But Kubel or Cuddyer didn’t come up big behind him. The guys behind him need to get hot and protect against that.

Although I’m not prepared to get ensnared in that web again, I r-e-a-l-l-y don’t want to see Posada sitting out a-n-y of these games against the Angels.

    bodh

He had 6 BB, 2 HBP and 6 Ks in 2005 ALDS. Don’t remember each AB from 4 years ago but those numbers sound like they were either throwing out of the zone and he was swinging or they picked their spots to go right at him.

The Angels and/or his approach may be different this time but those OBP numbers compared to BA is stark.

I’m sorry for being a bad person, but am I the only one have major feelings of schadenfreude while reading the comments section on Boston.com/Pete’s new blog.

The major themes being discussed are:
    1) Sox nation getting duped by the front office regarding the supposed low-risk/high reward strategy.
    2) The Red Sox being old
    3) Ortiz being finished as a major offensive threat.

    Reading this makes me smile.

I guess I have to take responsibility for that loss because I didn’t take the shower when I wrote it.

Those midges still sceeve me out thinking about it now.

  83. Seven October 14th, 2009 at 12:11 am

@ M I like these updates by Pete.

UPDATE, 7:48 p.m.: This is weird. There are some sort of bugs on the field and the players are all getting bug spray put on them. That’s why Mientkiewicz was having problems during his at-bat.

UPDATE, 8:01 p.m.: Is this really happening because of gnats? Joba is clearly unnerved by the swarm of bugs on the field and has lost his control. He’s overthrowing everything, which has led to the wild pitches, walks and hit batter. What a mess.

But Yeah Torre should of pulled the team off the field. Especially when he saw how much of a problem Joba was having.

  84. m October 14th, 2009 at 12:13 am

    pat,

Never you mind. This loss was squarely on Joe Torre. And what the heck happened to Carmona? He was fabulous that year and simply fell off the map. Another star that flamed out after blinding the Yankees.

    Betsy,

lol. It was pretty funny, huh? It’s just like any other game thread.

  85. m October 14th, 2009 at 12:15 am

    Seven,

“Some sort of bugs” major understatement given what happened after that!

  86. 100 pitches of fun... October 14th, 2009 at 12:19 am

Torre just sat back and relaxed way too often. Especially in the 2004 series with Wakefield on the mound. Like he didn’t go after the wins just waited for them to come to them.

    =====

Alex is much more of a contact hitter now. As impressive as his OBP has been over the years, Alex is far less vulnerable now in a pitcher’s count.

    those odds are pretty bad

those living outside the US can bet on betfair which is a two way market so the company doesn’t put up any odds, instead its punters on both sides. RIght now bid ask for Yankees to win the WS is 2.36-2.38

    Dodgers are 4.5-5.0
    Phillies are 5.8-7.4
    Angels are 4.7-5.0

And Yankees are 1.53-1.64 to win the ALCS

  100. Dave October 14th, 2009 at 3:53 am

I think the odds are in favor of the yanks obviously. My second pick would be the angels. Whoever is coming out of the AL is winning it all. My third pick would be the dodgers and I dont think the phillies have any shot. Hamels has looked like garbage for most of the year and the fact that he is still doing terrible in the postseason shows everybody that they are looking for last years Cole when they dont have him. Hamels this year had extremely mediocre numbers compared to years past. He looks like a shell of last years version. Lidge was the worst closer in the mlb this year. Hitting doesn’t win in the postseason alone so they are goners.

With home field advantage and a flat out better team than the angels I would hope the yanks would be favored. I think the yanks have the edge when you compare the two lineups as they don’t have any 2 that really match up against arod and tex right now in terms of top 10 best talent in baseball. Lackey and Weaver to pose formidable matchups for CC and Burnett but after that, we have pettitte and they have an abysmal kazmir. We have home field advantage which is a big deal. I would take Mo over fuentes any day of the week any week of the year. Oliver, Bulger and Jepson were solid this year but I think anyone in their right mind would take Hughes, Joba, Robertson/Coke/Aceves bullpen combo if they had to choose. Coke has been lights out for over a month now. Hughes was untouchable all season. Joba was the most electric arm out of the pen the last two years. Robertson looked unshakable under pressure his last time out and aceves has been a rock in the middle of the pen going 10-1 this year. This is a better pen than we had in the last world series win with nelson stanton and mendoza. Id say all in all this team is looking like they can take down the angels in 5 or 6 games tops.

  101. Dave October 14th, 2009 at 4:13 am

I do have to say I am a bit worried about damon – he looks like garbage at the plate. His swing is completely off and he has that lost puppy dog look every time he strikes out. Hopefully, the week off will help him get his act together but I really think something is actually wrong with him physically because he is just so totally horrendous looking.. Since sept 20, damon has 6 hits and no homers. Thats actually better than I thought but still not great. Arod, jeter and posada cannot do everything by themselves.

Tex will likely get into the mix a little more as despite his homer, he is 2 for 12 so far but I think damon would be a welcome addition to the offense against a team that has their offense running on all cylinders. 6 of the 9 angel starters have an obp of 250 or better against the sox with aybar at 364 and hunter at 385 and vlad at 500 and abreu at 692. We had posada at 364 and matsui at 417 and arod at 500 and jeter at 538 which looks good against them except nobody else broke 250 and only tex is above 200. So there lineup played more well rounded than the yanks in the ALDS.

That doesn’t mean much and could reflect a number of things but to me, lackey and weaver are better pitchers than anyone the yanks have seen so far starting and they cannot expect the same four guys to carry the entire burden. I am looking at damon, tex and cano really. Tex hit 467 for the angels in 2008 in the ALDS. Including this series, damon has averaged 302 352 474 with the yanks and sox in the ALDS. Cano hit 333 375 800 in the ALDS in 2007. I dont expect too much out of swish and cabrera but those 3 need to step it up against lackey and weaver.

  102. Dave October 14th, 2009 at 4:27 am

To state the above comment a slightly different way, we had cabrera, swish, cano, damon and tex all putting up obps of under 250 while the angels only had figgins, izturis and kendrick do the same. We matched up against pavano, blackburn and duensing who had eras of 5.1, 4.1 and 3.64 respectively. While the angels matched up against beckett lester and bucholz who had eras of 3.86, 3.41 and 4.2 respectively and I think anyone would agree are of higher caliber talent and have far more post-season experience. Again, not saying that there aren;t numerous variables involved but i do think the yanks have to hit better against weaver, lackey and kazmir as a lineup than they did against the twins pitchers above as those two are two of the leagues better pitching talents as was kazmir up until this year.

    Happy Birthday Joe Girardi!!

  104. David October 14th, 2009 at 7:14 am

Jeter made a nice throw to home on the play that resulted in tagging out Punto after he overran third. But, Jeter could have done better. It took a good throw by Jorge to make the play happen.

There was no rush to throw the ball, since Punto was so far from home. If Jeter had held the ball and run toward Punto, he could have waited to see which base Punto ran toward. Then there would have been an easier play to tag Punto out whether he continued toward home or went back to third.

    In other words,

I’m glad Klapisch said what he said about destiny – it’s a bunch of hooey. Interesting quotes from Cash, though:

“To be honest, I think they look down on us,” said general manager Brian Cashman. “They’ve had their way with us for some time, and now we have something to prove to them. It’s not the other way around.

“I think the Angels feared the Red Sox, but they don’t fear us. I think they’re happy they’re playing us.”

*I don’t care if the Angels fear us – this isn’t football, where emotion is a huge factor in determining the outcome. I just want the Yankees to execute – if they do, they’ll be fine.

The only part of the article that annoyed me was the Abreu reference. We won 103 games and what – we would have won 110 with Bobby? Klapisch is a stooge if he thinks that Abreu was worth what he would have gotten in arbitration. If the Yankees had signed him, we would not have Tex. He really needs to think, Klapisch does.

Can’t remember where I saw it, MLB or ESPN, but they did a comparison between Tex and Swish vs Abreu and Morales and gave the advantage to the Angels. Abreu was one of my favorite players, but Swish has been a good replacement. His defense has steadily improved, he was great in the ALDS. Swish has the same plate discipline as Abreu, altho Bobby was certainly hot in the ALDS. And Tex is in a class by himself.

This team won 103 games!! I really could care less what all those jerks say. The game is played on the field!

And all this destiny garbage is really annoying. This kid (and I am not disparaging him in any way shape or form)was a rookie, he was not a vet on this team. A bug specialist (and I should know the official name, since my uncle is one), called the Indians and told them not to use bug spray, that it actually attracts them.

Plus if you recall (I am trying to block it out) the bugs were not as bad when they were pitching. I recall hearing that they come for maybe 15 minutes than leave. I maintain if Joe pulled them off the field we would have won.
