On to the next one

Yankee Stadium is getting itself ready for the American League Championship Series to return to the Bronx.
I just got to the stadium for today’s workout. The ALCS logos are being painted in foul territory , and the video boards are showing a “Quest for 27″ logo. It’s chilly and bordering on cold, but still better than snowy Minneapolis.
The clubhouse opens in a half hour, and we’ll be talking to Joe Girardi a little bit later this afternoon. I expect more questions about the rotation and the roster, and I’m hoping for an answer or two about both. Stick with us, we’ll let you know as soon as we know.

You guys are doing an awesome job.
Don’t forget to wish Joe Girardi a happy birthday!!!!
(I bet I know what he is wishing for)
You beat me to it Erica! Though I only remembered because he shares the day with myself, which I think was one of the reasons I liked him so much when I was a kid. Probably not the smartest reason to like a player, but oh well, I was young.
reposting in new thread
:
i’d personally like yanks/phillies in the WS as i used to live in PA and have a few (although, very few) phillie fan friends that i’d can brag about winning to.
i don’t think i know any dodger fans.
never read comics, but ms. grundy is cute. love her outfit.

I guess ill repost mine as well:
The Dodgers starting rotation doesn’t impress me nearly as much as the Phillies. Given that, the Phillies bullpen doesn’t impress me as much as the Dodgers.
I guess this is where you can say which is more important; a starting pitcher or a relief pitcher.
Which then ties back to the Joba in the bullpen debate.
Ummm, aren’t they getting a little ahead of themselves? Shouldn’t the video boards say “Quest for 40″?
Happy Birthday Christina!!!!!!!
(hint duly noted
)
Cliff Lee vs CC would be cool too.
as well as possibly hammering Pedro (without Enrique Wilson :p ).
lol, thanks Erica.
BTW, heres a trivia question for you, that I have been obsessively asking everyone.
Who was the last Yankee pitcher to receive a win against the Angels in a playoff game? Try not to cheat
bodhi,
Playing devil’s advocate, Bobby could be lacking intestinal fortitude because he’s trying to draw the walk. Just kidding.
Bobby’s one of the best 2 strike hitters in the game. And
I love that he’s come out of his shell (yes, he was shy).
What I don’t care for is him making the comment right after sweeping the Red Sox. That he wante to play the Yankees all year. People said it was nothing, blah, blah, blah. You know it is. Unless he wasn’t there for the first 10 games of the year.
This blog is taken it to the next level, which I didn’t think was possible. LoHud rocks!
I missed it, m – what did he say? He wanted a crack at us?
Christina-
David Wells?
Whoever wins the AL the Phillies will be waiting at the airport to face them in game 1. That team is STACKED with big time players – from Utley to Werth to Victorino and Rollins. They were the team that played the Yankees the toughest this year – even though two out of the 3 games they played were close the Yankees were very lucky to come away with one victory in that series. I think the difference between the Yankees now and then is the bullpen and Arod is no longer a .200 hitter.
Christina, I cheated, but I won’t give it away… even though you kinda did in your post
Buddy- Not Wells..
Good question Christina, had to look it up.
Christina-
Was it a reliever in 2005?
Yes it was…. And the hint I could give would be sooo obvious..
It’s never really fair to speculate what this Yankee team will do and compare what they did in past history or what situations took place.
First of all there’s many players on the current 25-man roster that were not on the last 2007 playoff roster and were with other teams or in the Yankee minor league system.
How this team blends, executes plays, and how well they are managed will be the determining factor and much the same applies to the Angels.

Happy Birthday
could it be the ever popular Al Leiter?
In that case-
I will guess Mariano Rivera
bodhi,
Don’t know who the original twitterer is, but here’s the text:
Twitter-Bobby Abreu 5 for 9, 4 runs, 4 walks, 1 RBI in ALDS. “I want the Yankees next,” he said. “Been waiting all year.” LAA just loves him.
It should have been Mussina if not for the infamous collision.
Thanks, Kate
ding ding ding!
Yes, it was the great Alois Terry Leiter. He pitched in relief (.2 of an inning) of Shawn Chacon during game 4 of the ALDS, in which the Yankees won by a score of 3-2.
The starting pitcher for the Angels that game? None other than Mr. John Lackey himself.

Good job Kate
I like random Yankee trivia
i think the key is going to be to beat up on lackey in game 1

Ugh. That collision. You actually felt the air just get sucked right out of the stadium when they collided.
I was there for that game. A cold Sunday night.
I Remember Chacon keeping pace with Lackey. Don’t recall Leiter.
Christina
having you been watching Al on the mlb channel? He was part of the group that did a preview of the ALCS. He was explaining/demonstating Mo’s cutter. I just love Leiter’s enthusiam. (That was also the show where they said Abreu/Morales were better than Swish/Tex)
Erica-
I only guessed Leiter b/c w/ Christina, well who else would it be
Happy Birthday Christina!

I haven’t seen it yet, though I love when he does those demonstrations. He’s great at explaining the mechanics of pitching. Not that I’d ever be able to throw the pitch myself, but it is cool to see how all that works.
As for the Leiter comment, you are right, I probably am predictable. Though I did find it pretty interesting he was the last guy to get a win back in 05. That will all soon change!

Is that a Foo Fighters reference? If so, COOL!
I enjoyed having Abreu on the Yankees but he really acts like a bitter man. I saw an interview with him after a game and he was asked about who he would root for, the Phillies or the Yankees. (I don’t recall the full context that lead to that question). He replied that it would be the Phillies, he would never root for the Yankees.
He would have been looking for a lot to stay with the Yankees. At that point they had gotten Nady so Abreu was an extra outfielder who would have been requiring more money to sign.
The contract he did sign took a while to come, and it was for a big pay cut.
His bat is great, and at the time I thought he would have been great to have back on a short deal where he was back up outfielder and DH with the thought that Matsui would be gone after this season. Abreu’s defense is not great. He let a lot of balls drop that could have been caught had he really tried. His fear of the wall, any wall, was frustrating.
He was a good pick up for the team, but his acting like a jilted lover just bugs me.
MLB Network’s Leiter explains why Yankess have edge

MLB Network’s Al Leiter joined the show to discuss the upcoming playoff series.
– Leiter, a starting pitcher himself, pointed to pitching as the biggest key to both of these series. He says the Yankees’ rotation is set up very well for New York to advance.
– Leiter thinks the Yankees have the best chance of winning it all.
– Leiter really likes the Yankees’ A.J. Burnett. “I’m a big fan of A.J. Burnett, and when he’s on … he has no-hit stuff,” Leiter said.
– Leiter said that Alex Rodriguez is in a much better place. “I think that the series against Minnesota is just going to propel him to a great championship series and World Series,” Leiter said.

Thanks NYY!
Joe is turning 45 today.
Outside of Cliff Lee the Phillies rotation doesn’t impress me. Their pen is not that good either. Lidge has to be the Lidge of last year, not this year when he was bad.
Big plus for the Phillies is their hitters, very good line-up.

Two main advantages the Yankees have in this series:
1) The ability to score with a HR at any time at any place in the order.
2) Our bullpen.
As long as our starters do as well as the LAA starters, we’ll win it in the 7th inning on…
Is anyone else getting really anxious for Friday night?! I seriously can not wait!!!
The recaps in that last link, but basically he thinks it’d be “fun” to play the Yankees. Wants to see the new stadium, but doen’t know if they’ll let him in the clubhouse.
Talked about Torre a bit (who said today that he’s coming back next year even if the win the WS).
I am soooo looking forward to Friday!!
I don’t know why anyone would want to play the Yankees. I mean, I get all the grudge match stuff, but the Yankees are a good team.
Unless they’re expecting us to revert to recent postseason form.
This is the best blog out there. No doubt. Sam and Chad are doing an outstanding job that I honestly didn’t think it was possible when Pete left… I guess I was wrong. Excellent job guys.
How much do you guys think Peteabe wishes he was still covering the yankees and not an empty fenway park press conference?
not to mention that red sox blog is a total bust– less then 25 comments during a game compared to 2,000 here.

Allie, I hear you. Friday can not come soon enough.
They have to turn over the red sox blog to pete…it has to have a main voice to set the tone…right now it is like a Frankenstein Blog.
But yes, Pete Abe must be a little bummed.
We have to take the first 2 games. I don’t want a split with 3 straight games down there in Cali.

i’m not sure i agree. it may be a little better if he were the only blogger, but i don’t think he’d ever be able to create a blog like he did with this one. it was all in the timing with what else was available at the time. and i think a lot of people came here due to the amount of activity in the comments in addition to # of posts/threads…
I can’t believe you guys are walking down this particular memory lane! It’s filled with roadblocks and thorny bushes!!!

That happened in LA. Those god darn thunder sticks distracted them.
I’m glad i’m not the only craving baseball. i feel like an addict. And I have nothing to watch at night. its bad. I too am just looking fwd to tomorrows game, just to get a taste of baseball! ( god help us on the off season! )
Pete is fine. He’s making more money at a larger newspaper and he’s closer to his Red Sock/Patriot fam. He’s probably never been happier in his life.
Why do people think this blog is his entire life? He knew what he was getting himself into when he left LoHud.
It’s a gorgeous day today…….wish today’s weather could be transplanted to the weekend
Allie
Hopefully the ‘off season’ won’t start until the middle of Nov.
CHAD, what will happen if Friday is rained out?!
Happy Birthday, Christina. And Joe G!
I hope Abreu gets a debilitating foot fungus. What a whiny ***ch.
Abreu/Morales are not even close to Swish/Tex because Tex is a much, much better player than any of the others and Swish is not far off from Abreu.
It’s your birthday, Christina? Happy b-day!
Leiter was one who was always convinced AJ had turned things around…certainly that he could handle NY. They were traded for each other when AJ was a pup and then played with eachother for one year in Florida….
There is an article about Abreu in the New York Times today:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10.....nkees.html
What do you guys think? Was it a good move to get rid of Abreu?
Thanks Doreen and Betsy
Betsy- Agree on both points, especially the strange love Leiter has for Burnett. I think he might have some bias there in that regard. AJ is a good pitcher, but I dont think hes as dominate as Al is making him out to be.
Much ado about Bobby A. here today. He was one of my favorite players and I was sad to see him go. Good bat.
That said, if it came down to signing Abreu or Tex, I am glad we got Tex instead.
Hurry up Friday!!
I agree that Pete’s new blog is sad. It seems like there are way too many voices and there’s some kind of rotation working there. They are also going to run out of content for awhile until the hot stove heats up. If, at that point, Pete is still sharing the space like he is now it will be a problem.
That said, I think we feel that way because we’re used to him having control of the blog himself. That’s the reason it bothers those of us who know and like him.
The truth is the same thing is happening here. We have a team of writers contributing and quite frankly they are doing an excellent job. The blog is, dare I say, stronger now than it ever was. Chad’s perspective on players from Scranton is wonderful to have. It feels like everyone is working on concert with each other.
Dow starting to make its move

good thing the phils dont have ryan howard also. yikes that would be dangerous.
Buck Showalter is such a loser. He was just on espn and they asked him what he thought about the Yanks going to a 3 man rotation? He said he didn’t like it because then Posada will be catching 5 out of the 7 games and the Angels will run all over him. He said Posada is catching too many games. He has such a bitter face when he talks about the Yanks. I don’t know what that has to do with CC pitching. I am glad he answered the question.
Thanks, Don for the link to Tyler’s article on Bobby A. It is a good story. He was always good for 100 + RBI’s per year.
Strange that he is not considered an HR hitter. The first time I became aware of him was in All – Star HR home run derby. He hit a ton.
Don, would Abreu have been worth it for the cost, not only in salary, but that it would have meant no Swisher and no Teixeira?
Abreu would make a decent DH in time. Having him as a backup outfielder and DH would make sense. Having him as full time RF was costing runs.
I bet he gets at least 10 million for a couple of years in his next contract.
Another note on the angels:
Yankees know they can hit Fuentes. It was like with Nathan. They have had success off of him which means even if the angels are ahead in the 9th, they are not safe.
if our pitchers can keep the lead for our pen i like our chances
Abreu and Showalter should both be covered in syrup and fire ants and locked in a dog crate.
Well, in light of the fact that next Saturday, the 24th, may be an important game in this series, I finally called Comcast to inquire about DVR. Because we have the package we have with the, it will only cost us $5 more a month, so I said okay, and we’re having installed on Friday!
Yay!
On to the next one…. Freeze!! Somebody bring me back some money please.
Nice Jay-Z reference on your post headline.
“quest for 27″ isn’t new… that has been on the screens since april.
