There’s a workout today (and a live chat tomorrow!)
I’m getting ready to head down to the Stadium for this afternoon’s workout, and we’ll have plenty of blogging throughout the day. As many of you have e-mailed, I’m sure one topic will be contingency plans in case of rain this weekend (both how it might affect the series and how it might affect the pitching). We’ll get you any news as soon as we have it.
Also, just a reminder that we’re doing the ALCS Live Chat tomorrow NIGHT – instead of the lunchtime version – at 7 p.m. Go here to check it out and feel free to stop by at the site a little early and submit some questions ahead of time. Back with more later.

Wow, I don’t get it. Phil Hughes is lights out for months in the pen – he struggles in the ALDS (while Joba does fine, but nothing particularly special) and Joe and Evan on WFAN thinks Yankee fans should trust Joba more over Phil?
Thanks, Sam! You guys are doing a fantastic job!
I really hate to complain about the weather, but that is truly going to screw up the Yankee plans – it definitely affects us more than the Angels. The idea of losing CC or AJ due to a delay is horrible – I can’t even think about it.
Betsy,
They are Met fans. By the way I saw your earlier posts about collecting the Archie comics. Did you get the anniversary edition this summer when Archie got engaged to Veronica?
Sam and Chad,
Thanks for the good works!
I don’t know who Joe and Evan are, but Joba hasn’t been lights out either. That rope-a-dope is an interesting theory, but by and large the Angel have access to all the film on Phil. But I was wondering where the “coda” went.
As for those who are worried about Chad (and Damon), this is from the Bats blog:
¶Five relief pitchers threw live batting practice Tuesday to five position players. The pitchers were Chad Gaudin (50 pitches), Alfredo Aceves (30), Phil Coke (20), Dave Robertson (20) and Damaso Marte (15). The hitters were Francisco Cervelli, Brett Gardner, Jerry Hairston Jr., Eric Hinske and Johnny Damon, who asked for the extra work. Damon finished the regular season in a slump and was 1 for 12 in the division series, including four strikeouts in Game 3. The last Yankee to do that in a nine-inning postseason game was pitcher Mel Stottlemyre in Game 2 of the 1964 World Series.
upstate kate,
I’m happy we have Swisher too, but come one, his plate discipline is as good as Abreu’s??
Not in the same class, there. But I’ll take Nicky’s OF defense, and his OPS & switch hitting.
Rain has not been our friend. 2004 comes to mind
.
At least we have a deep bullpen for contingencies.
The halos blog bragged about having starters in their bullpen.
It’s nice to know that if we lose a starter because of an extended rain delay in the game, that we can always go to Aceves, Joba, and Gaudin who can all give length. And if Joe doesn’t play matchups we can actually piece together a pretty lon outing from the bullpen.
Fran, I haven’t read Archie in years….but I still have a warm place in my heart. Wow, so Archie chose Veronica? I hope it’s permanent…I need to go find that issue, if it’s still at newsstands. About 8 or 9 years ago, there was an Archie tv movie – it was ok, but pretty dorky, lol.
Oh, I know they are Met fans. I also know I am a Phil fan girl, but I just don’t see how an objective Yankee fan could say that they have more faith in Joba than Phil based on a couple of outings. I admit Phil’s struggles are making me nervous, but still……
Betsy
Actually, Archie has also proposed to Betty!!

Archie totally made the right choice!
M, Joe and Evan are hosts on WFAN, sports talk radio in NY
Actually- Archie sounds confused:
“The wedding story was written by Michael E. Uslan and illustrated by Stan Goldberg, a longtime “Archie” artist. The first half was called “Archie Marries Veronica,” but issue No. 603, on sale next month, is called “Archie Marries Betty.” The end of bachelorhood began in issue No. 600, in which Archie found himself on a road named Memory Lane, which he has often traveled. This time he walked a different direction and encountered a fork in the road. He chose the left path, which allowed him to see his future with Veronica and their twins, and himself working for her tycoon father. “

OK, maybe not as good as Abreu’s but Swish does see a lot of pitches. They are both good players, I am not knocking Bobby. Bobby is always a threat on the bases, and a smart base runner. Swish’s defense has gotten a lot better and you could never claim he is afraid of the wall.
IMO Swish/Tex > Abreu/Morales
Well, he’s going to next month
Betsy,
I think Phil will be fine. He locked down the 8th inning this season and see no reason not to trust him. I actually have a lot of confidence in the Yankees bullpen (except maybe for Marte).
iii collies, thanks for that! LOL Archie – seriously, he still can’t make up his mind. 80/20 for Betty? Please – that girl was a pollyanna- she bakes, fixes cars and basically fawns all over Archie. I love how Jughead finished 3rd, lol. Oddly, I would choose MaryAnn (Betty character) over Ginger (Veronica character) on Gilligan’s Island….
I’m glad Bobby’s getting his time in the spotlight (even though a little of it is the 4-letter network rubbing our noses in it a little).
But when did Bobby all of a sudden become this gritty, hard-nosed player that they’re portraying?
I liked Abreu when he was here, but he seemed to be the Reggie Theus of baseball. Very good player, but a bit of a pretty boy.
And I agree with what someone said earlier, if Scioscia is such a great manager, then why did it take Bobby’s influence to make the hitters learn patience at the plate?
I don’t understand why this crazy “Freeway” series notion is getting all hyped up.
1) A regional world series creates disinterest for every other part of the country. The 2000 Subway Series was one of the lowest rated ever on Tv at the time
2) I would think from a melodrama standpoint, Yankees vs Dodgers would generate much more interest and story writing. As well as appear to a larger Tv market
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/ne.....;type=lgns
Didn’t know that Archie was a two-timer. The NY press would have a field day with him if he played for the Yankees
I turned Joe and Evan off. They are killing Girardi for overmanaging and thinks if he continues to do that, the Angels will take advantage. They also basically said the Yankees only beat the Twins because the Twins messed up so often. I’m no pollyanna and I usually see the negative side to everything, Fran, but then I also don’t want to hear garbage like they are spewing. Ah, I’m much happier with the radio off.
Erica,
The Times has an article on how a Yankees/Dodgers WS is the best thing for baseball, something about restoring the faith in baseball. I haven’t clicked on it yet because there’s a picture of Manny swinging. How can Manny vs. Alex restore faith in baseball? I’ll get back to it eventually, but enough of the tragic inspiration and contrived storylines.
I want baseball! As long as we keep winning games and winning series.
Abreu is a very good all around hitter. His strike zone dicipline is very, very good. It is, perhaps, the best in baseball.
But let’s not undervalue what Swisher has meant to this team.
I really hate to complain about the weather, but that is truly going to screw up the Yankee plans – it definitely affects us more than the Angels. The idea of losing CC or AJ due to a delay is horrible – I can’t even think about it.
____
I dont see how this would affect us worse than the Angels. Our pen is FAR superior to theirs and if we lose our starter to rain, chances are they do too. They dont want a bullpen match up.
Fran, the Yankees had a couple of players in the 70′s (Kekich and Peterson, I think?) who switched wives….Archie would fit right in, lol. Actually, my parents knew two couples who switched husbands and wives….I still can’t get over it, lol

Garbage. When is the last time the yankees were 5-5 in one season vs. the Angels? I think Joe G did just fine.
checkin in today. And nothing except panic.
peace out.

I like the aspect that the Dodgers were originally a NY team (and if you have seen CitiField, you would think they still are). There are still a lot of New Yorkers that root for the Dodgers. Plus, these are two of the most classic teams in the game.
I won’t like the subplot of “Torre’s Return” and I hate the idea of ever having to watch Manny hit again. I also hate seeing Donnie Baseball in Dodger Blue. It is not natural. But putting aside my own personal feelings, I think a Dodger/Yankee World Series would generate the most interest in baseball and could really be a memorable and well watched Series

What board are you reading?? Who is panicking??? Half the comments on this thread are about Archie comments.
Bye bye
Who cares about Betty or Veronica when we have the sexy Ms. Grundy?
It’s not overmanaging if the players execute. And anyone who places serious emphasis on a season series or past history doesn’t know what they’re talking about. We were undefeated against the Tigers and the Twins in two different seasons and ended up with two very different results.
The past is the past. Different players, different circumstances, different umps.
btw, I didn’t watch the Rockies elimination game until the 9th. But sportscenter updates on th radio said that there were 3 blown calls already in the game. Utley hit a foul ball they called fair or vice versa?
Betsy,
I remember that scandal. I think that Kekich is still married to Peterson’s ex-wife.

That sounds about right to me.
My personal position (for the record):
Most interesting match up: Yankees/Dodgers
My preferred match up: Yankees/Phillies
My prediction: Yankees/Phillies
I guestimate Phillies over Dodgers in 6
Ms. Grundy was pretty hot for a chick her age….
I really don’t care who we face – I just want to get to the WS. I don’t like the Dodgers at all and I would feel the same way even if Joe wasn’t managing the team. I don’t know why I feel that way- I was too young and not into baseball in 1980 to experience the rivalry. I certainly wasn’t around in the 1950s……but the Dodgers annoy me for some reason. Joe Torre back in this town? Ugh – I’d prefer not, but I don’t have a choice, so whatever at this point.
Erica, I think MR. Weatherbee and Ms. Grundy were secretly dating….it was written all over their faces.
My guess is the AL team (I am thinking Yankees of course) will beat the NL team (my original guess was the Cards, so I guess it goes to the Dodgers by default).
Yankees/Dodgers would certainly have a lot of story lines.
Phillies/Yanks gets my vote.
No Torre drama
No cross country travel
I’m with Pat. Yankees/Phillies to save on the travel. But as long as the Yankees are in the World Series, I’ll be happy.

Betsy, I’m the same way-I have this weird dislike of the Dodgers for some reason. I definitely think the Yankees can beat them, but I’m personally hoping the Phillies can make it past them just so we don’t have to hear the endless “Torre’s back in New York” drama
I originally said Cardinals.
I don’t know who has the edge here.
Phillies:
-HFA
-Cliff Lee (though they can only throw him 2X)
-Lots of Thump in the lineup to hit in that
-teeny, tiny park
-been there, done that(i.e. they have experience)
Dodgers:
-Much better bullpen
I don’t know these teams that well, seems like they’re evenly matched.
Phillies win. I think.
I am going to be in Atlantic City this weekend. I was there last year at this time when the Phils were in the NLCS. Ever since, it seems like everytime I am there some Philly/PA area team is in the playoffs.
Don’t know why but I seem to bring them luck.

I have a small crush on Chase Utley
Hey guys-
Great transition from Pete to you guys…way to go. Keep the info coming!! Do you have any info on the ‘standing room only’ and ‘extra’ tix that were released by the Yanks for the playoffs? I cna’t seem to find any info anywhere. Thanks alot!

Agree. & if we had had a DH spot open, I would have been in favor of re-signing Abreu for 1-year.
Dow very close to 10,000
Dodgers have HFA in this years NLCS, no?
Well there was never any innocence and purity in baseball anyway so I’m not sure what was lost.
yes, Dodgers do have homefield. Hear that, m?
Tom,
Argh. You’re right. I was only looking at who hosted the wild card, not paying attention to the whole division thing.
Should be interesting. Both teams have their breakout stars putting their fingerprints all over the postseason. Ethier and Werth.
Bella,
Sure there was purity. In the minds of the writers and historians.
m, It does get kinda lost in translation that the Dodgers had the best record in the NL.
Josh, Sam, & Chad have been doing an unbelievable job so far. I truthfully expected the blog to be second rate after Pete left, but you 3 have far exceeded expectations. Keep it up!
Also, with the 3 days left to kill between now and game 1, a thread about your experiences thus far with the blog/following the Yanks would be awesome!
Go Yanks!

Probably because they stumbled so badly at the end.
Its funny when you look back to the first month of the season and they were sporting a winning percentage of approx .750
You’re right m. I forgot.
Okay, I lied a little.
Through the first two months of the season the Dodgers had a winning percentage of exactly .673%. It was never as high as .750%
LGY
and even their BB/K are not too different
Swish .770
Bobby .832

THhe Dodgers starting rotation doesn’t impress me nearly as much as the Phillies. Given that, the Phillies bullpen doesn’t impress me as much as the Dodgers.
I guess this is where you can say which is more important; a starting pitcher or a relief pitcher.
Which then ties back to the Joba in the bullpen debate.
Tom,
I had them down for 5 wins after the all-star break, I should go back and actually look at their record, huh?
Swishy swings at some weird stuff low in the zone, but he has a great eye. If he lets it go, he’s almost always right. By and large most of our guys are. Even Damon knew the dope early in the Minny series.
Cool story on Jetes.

As for my 2 cents on the Yankees/Dodgers thing – I don’t want to see it because I don’t like the idea of having to play against Joe. My good friend however, who is a die hard sox fan, admitted to me last night that she wants to see a Yanks vs. Torre WS.
i’d personally like yanks/phillies in the WS as i used to live in PA and have a few (although, very few) phillie fan friends that i’d can brag about winning to.
i don’t think i know any dodger fans.

Just to play devil’s advocate: If grit is “fortitude and determination” how does it not apply to Abreu hanging in there at the plate, shrugging off 2-strike counts and waiting for his pitch?
How does grit express itself acceptably in a baseball game?
