Today in The Journal News
While Alex Rodriguez has (understandably) gotten much of the attention so far, the month of October continues to be Derek Jeter’s playground. For more on that, check out my column.
The Yankees are seriously considering using a three-man rotation in the ALCS, which would mean CC Sabathia pitching Games 1, 4 and (if necessary) 7. This notebook also has news on Joe Girardi’s feeling on Phil Hughes and the eighth inning, as well as some extra BP for Johnny Damon and ALCS roster speculation.

Ok if there is a rainout Friday do we lose the travel day. If that is the case we will need a fourth pitcher…
Thanks for the updates. I say go for it with the 3 man rotation!
I really hope the weather forecast changes. 40 degrees and rain doesn’t sound too good for the players or the fans.
I hope there’s not a rainout on Friday. Waiting this long for game 1 has been bad enough!
58 hours and 18 minutes until Game 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Erica-
putting the wait time in hours makes it seem to go by faster
Could work if CC doesn’t have to pitch GM 3 and 7 more than 6 innings. If the pen stays lights out.
I hope Alex has a phenomenal run in Oct.

I agree. Only one person complained otherwise. But I don’t really care about that.
This is the format I have used on all of my countdowns, I didn’t see any reason to change it
3491 minutes ’til game time!
And I guess this doesn’t help
i say pencil him 1,4,7 but if the yankees are up 3-0, go to gaudin, aceves, etc game 4.
The post says LAA Will start a lefty in game 2… Their rotation will be announced today or tomorrow officially
“i say pencil him 1,4,7 but if the yankees are up 3-0, go to gaudin, aceves, etc game 4.”
Why?
If the Yanks sweep they’ll have a week off to rest.

Go ahead and make fun of me. See if I care
It seems to me that the smart thing to do regarding CC starting on short rest would be to see how he does in his first game. If he pitches well and doesn’t have to throw a ton of pitches then yes, pitch on short rest. If he gets hit hard, evaluate why (poor/rusty mechanics, matchups against the Angels hitters, errors made behind him and so on) and use that to decide if it makes sense to go with him on short rest.
Making the decision now seems premature, better to take a look at how things develop, what the standings look to be once that start comes up. Facing the same pitcher too many times in the best of 7 series can make it tough on the pitcher to have repeat results.
I’m reading a doosey of a sports article.It has PapelBomb going to Texas,for 1st baseman,Justin Smoak.
PaperBomb WILL be converted into a starter for Texas.(CRAZY)
Thesportsnetwork.com has the story. If Socks do this trade,it must mean Bard is the closer, Lowell is out,Yuk at 3rd.Should be a fun winter in beantown.

I’m not making fun of you – I’m a numbers person myself, though not in accounting.
BTW, how do you enable the emoticons?

The one i did above is : grin : without spaces
The normal smiley is : – ) without spaces
If CC doesn’t pitch well then the Yankees are in trouble especially if the Angels don’t have similar problems with their starting pitching. I rather take my chance with CC on short rest for Game 4 then with Gaudin, who hasn’t pitched in two weeks.
I doubt the weather is going to cooperate……I think we’re supposed to get a noreaster and the rain will be a factor throughout the weekend.

:
Having seen players rise from lower levels, AA Trenton and up to AAA Scranton / Wilkes-Barre, Chad Jennings can speak with some good authority as to what players seem close to being major league ready.
He’s had good dialogue with Vice President of Baseball Operations Mark Newman and others with their perpective of talent.
hmm
something lost in the translation
Was listening to Mike and Mike in the morning with Tim Mccarver.. Looks like the weather is gonna play a big factor in the first 2 games.. We could lose the travel day and hence forced to go with a 4 man rotation or we could have games where could be rain delays inbetween the game in which case they might not send out CC or AJ after a long gap.. Other thing is that Angels are planning to send Kazmir or Saunders out there in Game 2.. I’m thinking Kazmir more than Saunders..

“He just gets it done,” [Jorge] Posada said. “He just gets it done always.”
Always. Jeter may not have an offensive moment like [Reggie] Jackson’s trio of blasts, may not have one that stands out above all the rest. He has many.
——————-
It’s amazing that one single player can have so many great memorable post-season moments, while many struggle to get even just one of them.
MLB network did a nice segment on Derek Jeter’s Top Post-Season Moments two days ago. Here’s the list:
1. The Flip (2001 ALDS: Game 3)
2. Mr. November walk-off HR in 10th inning (2001 WS: G4)
3. Jeter hits 2-run triple to help clinch pennant (1998 ALCS: G6)
4. Game-tying “Jeffrey Maier” home run in 8th inning (1996 ALCS: G4)
5. Jeter hits leadoff HR in Game four & Game-tying HR in game five (2000 WS: G4 & 5)
6. Jeter guns down go-ahead runner Timo Perez in relay play to preserve scoreless tie (2000 WS: G1)
7. Jeter breaks a scoreless tie with a fifth-inning, three-run home run. (2000 ALCS: G4)
8. Jeter makes running catch into stands in 8th inning with potential tying run at the plate (2001 ALDS: G5)
9. Jeter hits game-tying 2-run HR in 3rd inning (2009 ALDS: G1)
10. Jeter starts 6-2-5 putout to get the lead runner Nick Punto (2009 ALDS: G3)
Another interesting factoid:
*Eleven of Derek Jeter’s 18 career postseason homers tied the score or gave the Yankees a lead.
Great article on Jeter! Thanks Sam.
Thanks for the great article on Derek. He deserves every accolade he gets. What a privilege it has been to watch him.
By the way, thank you for doing such a great job on this blog. I rarely post, but I read every day.
fullcount.weei.com Alex Speier, is discussing the merits of a Paperlbomb trade.
Have they all lost their minds?
Now mlbtraderumors has it on their thread too.
Poor Billy Wagner,he wanted to get to 400 closes, and still stuck at 385.Looks like a no no,He’s talking retirement.
:smirk:
Jeter’s HR #s are almost 40% higher in the postseason than the regular season. The guy is amazing.
Well, the ALDS is Jeter’s playground and always has been. The rest? hardly great
Jeter in the ALDS: .356/.417/.563/.980
Jeter in the ALCS/WS: .279/.339/.417/.756
Jeter regular season, career: .317/.388/.459/.847
sample size for ALDS/WS is 73 games/297 ABs (53/208 for ALDS)
his line in the ALCS/WS is almost identical to Melky Cabrera’s line for this year (.274/.336/.416/.752)
Thanks, Sam! Great article on Jeter. Yankee fans understand how great Jeter has been over the years, but I don’t think that Joe Baseball Fan really understands just how good Jeter has been throughout his career, especially in the postseason. It’s to believe that you could make an argument that Jeter is the most underrated, under appreciated player of his generation. Playing in NY you’d think that he would get more acknowledgment from the whole of the baseball universe.
