Umps announced (and ways to track weather)

Sam Borden

MLB has announced the umpiring crews for the two Championship Series. The Yankees-Angels series will have veteran Tim McClelland as the crew chief, with Dale Scott, Jerry Layne, Fieldin Culbreth, Laz Diaz and Bill Miller joining him. McClelland is generally recognized as one of the best umpires in the majors, though he has been on the field for his share of controversial calls (including being the plate ump who called George Brett out in the “pine-tar game”) and memorable days (he worked David Wells’s perfect game).

Just as an aside, I know there will be some who point to the fact that several umpires – including Phil Cuzzi – who worked Division Series aren’t working the second round, but that isn’t indicative of them being “left out” because of poor calls. In fact, it’s very, very rare for any umpire – good or bad – to work consecutive rounds in the playoffs.

For those who have tickets to the games (or just want to track weather-related Yankees news) this week, check out the Yankees weather page on Twitter. You can also text YANKEES WEATHER to MLBGO on your cell phone, though standard text rates apply.

Of course, you can also just check the LoHud Yankees blog religiously, since we’ll have all the Yankees news – including weather – as soon as it happens right here.

48 hours and 41 minutes until Game 1!!!!!!!

  4. pat

Watching Sean Casey on MLB Network makes it easy to see why he was one of the most likable guys in the league when he played.

  5. Weatherman

or maybe you can peer outside and look up, that is also a useful gauge for weather.

  6. Angels or Devils

I’m glad the troll PA is gone, may he RIP

  7. Betsy

Casey sounds a bit like Swish – he’s very hyper, lol

  8. zmaster

except laz diaz & maybe bill miller this is a great umpiring crew. heck! anything is better then c.b. buchnor & angel hernandez or marty “he didn’t have to tag u” foster :) GO YANKS!!

  9. Gardner in CF

The Yankees should file restraining orders against Merriweather and the plate guy from game 3

I’m watching MLB’s preview and just noticed the host standing on a block! Al Leiter is to his left and clearly standing on the floor. This guy is still 3-4 inches shorter than Al even with the assist.

Why would they let the camera pick that up, too funny!

  11. barb

the coverage is so much better since the new guys took over!!!

  12. timo

I’ll take McClelland as crew chief anytime. Diaz killed us in “the bug game” by giving Carmona a huge zone. Which was annoying at the time. However, that (aided) performance did help convince the Indians to put all their eggs in the Carmona basket and let CC go. Thanks Laz.

  13. Mark in Tampa

McClelland was also the crew chief for Sammy Sosa’s bat corking game.

Something crazy is bound to happen in this series with him on the crew.

You guys at Lohud are beyond great and save me a ton of time as well by allowing me to have one stop shopping for all info.

If you guys could start handicapping winners at Belmont Park for me I’d be forever indebted to you all!!!

  15. george

Laz Diaz & C.B. Bucknor are to umpiring what Felix Heredia was to quality relief pitching.

go to the yahoo sports profile for a batter (or pitcher). there’s a batter vs pitcher tab. you can sort by a certain year or career

    Im waiting for a reply

  22. YankeeFan

    Ty gardner, you’re the best

  23. pat

    Jeter on the Angels:

“They run well. They hit well. They pitch well. They’ve got a great manager. Where else can I go?” He paused, briefly. “They’ve got the monkey,” he said.

  24. Bronx Jeers

Am I wrong but wasn’t there a time when the umps were just a sort of anonymous quartet of men in blue?

Now we find ourselves fretting over drawing the wrong set of officials for an important series.

  25. Kevin S.

Yankeefan, go to baseball-reference.com, search the player you want, then click the ‘vs. Pitcher’ option.

  26. Kevin S.

And I’m still trying to figure out how McClelland was wrong to call Brett out. If that wasn’t the spirit of the rule, what was? I’m not aware of any other foreign substances that typically appear on bats.

  27. YankeeFan

    Lol i wanted to check out A-Rod against Mariano, he’s 3 for 11 (that’s 273).

  28. Tarheelyank

I almost wish I didn’t like Tori Hunter so much.

It sort of interferes with me wanting the Yankees to put an old fashion beat down on the angels.

    Well, maybe not.

  29. The Damon-ator

nice. no marty foster or joe west.

  30. bru

they should take an of line ump & throw him in a booth to make hr calls, fair, foul

you wont have to add any extra umps & you get the calls right

everybody on the planet who saw it on tv easily saw that that ball was fair

‘And I’m still trying to figure out how McClelland was wrong to call Brett out.’

He wasn’t wrong. He and Billy were right. That was the rule.

  33. OldYanksFan

17 SB in 24 attempts is a 71% rate, which is just about borderline productive. Not that this stat is perfect, but if you buy it, the Angels stolen base % really didn’t help them win any ballgames.

  34. saucY

none of those names make my blood boil when reading them

i guess that means it’s a good umpiring crew! :)
