Sabathia dominates as Yankees strike first
CC Sabathia was the ace that the Yankees dreamed about yet again, and the Yankees took advantage of a very sloppy night from the Angels in a 4-1 win. Back with much more from the clubhouse shortly.
UPDATE, 12:01 a.m.: We’ve got some tight newspaper deadlines but I wanted to get you guys some audio. Here’s Girardi’s postgame press conference.
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
Also, A-Rod said Sabathia “had it all working tonight. In the eighth inning, he’s throwing 96, 97 mph – that’s pretty impressive.” A-Rod also admitted that he ran right through Rob Thomson’s stop sign on the play at home but did so because he put his head down once he got to third base. “It was my mistake,” he said.

Great game! Could not have mapped it out any better. Please keep the train rolling AJ.
Go Yankees!
There’s a few things in this game that I took serious, I watched a 30 million dollar player coming off hip surgery give a 100% collision effort. Now if that doesn’t send a message to the 25 active in this series IDK what does. Now Al better be fine.
Oh yeh and
CC! CC! CC! CC!
Pie-Man try to beat that punk.
7 wins to go!!
“Johnny always sounds so awkward giving postgame interviews.”
Jason I think it’s because he stutters and so doesn’t always get his words out smoothly
Imagine if one of those other “excellent” closers got squeezed on as many pitches as Mo did. They would of needed a diaper.

Actually, that was one of his smoothest ones.
The guy did have a severe head injury once
20 hours and 33 minutes until Game 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What an awesome performance by CC. Nice to have a true ace.
Johnny had a speech problem when he was young.
Just wondering why did Girardi pull Pettitte after 6 innings and 81 pitches and sent Sabathia out after 7 innings and 98 pitches?
More than anything, C.C. holding down the Angels was so crucial with this win. They couldn’t get on base enough times to do their proverbial small ball damage. Of course, their defensive miscues sure helped!
Real Yankee fans had faith in the run line!!!

Good pitching.
Good defense.
Timely hitting.
———————————————————
check.
check.
and check.
Alex running through the stop sign, and Swisher swinging at ball four were the only mistakes they made. The Angels made 3 (really 4) errors alone.
Amazing how many 3-2 breaking balls Angel pitchers threw.
Great win.. 3 more to go and let’s bring the AL pennant back to New York! God bless the Yankees!
The only bummer is that we couldn’t score off their bullpen. But it was nice that we got into the bullpen somewhat.
CC made a very good team look like a very mediocre team tonight. Man is pitching important.
Erica, I do think it has more to do with his stutter than the head injury.
Meanwhile, Jon “WEEI every week” Rosenthal, Tim “wish it were the Sux” McCarver and Joe “anyone but the Yankees” Buck must really feel like they drew the short straw, ha ha!
“Just wondering why did Girardi pull Pettitte after 6 innings and 81 pitches…”
He didn’t, Pettitte started the 7th inning.
according to McCarver, the result of the game was incidental.
the real story of the game was Mathis miraculously holding onto the ball on the play at the plate.
he can, and probably will, talk about that play until the end of time.
Gotta love MLB Network ….. they think Arod was safe and Tex kept his foot on the bag.
Tremendous performance from Sabathia.
“Johnny had a speech problem when he was young.”
Yeah, and now the Angels have a Johnny problem now!
Glad to see him turn it around tonight. Hopefully all the silliness about him being benched will go away.
What a game – the Yankees just played a great game and the Angels imploded defensively. As to CC? He’s UN-believable – you can not pitch better than he did tonight. I was nervous about tonight because his #s against the Angels were not that good, but boy – what a dominant performance. I think we have heard the last of the “CC is not an ace” and “CC is not good in the clutch”. This man is a horse – period. LOL I thought it was hilarious how he was yawining on the bench between the 6th and the 7th (I think it was). Buck and McCarver got a kick out of it too…….But really, it shows how relaxed this big dude is. NOTHING fazes him……..
The Yankees didn’t do a lot of thumping tonight, but they did enough and they dominated the Angels even though it was a close game. Mo scared me a bit with the walk, but ever so calm and collected, he just got the next 3 outs, no sweat.
Buck and McCarver did get one thing right – this team expects to win. All the talk has been about the Angels and their confidence, not so much about the Yankees.
Scioscia thinks the stadium is loud, even though Ken doesn’t.
Damon was interviewed by Waldman on the radio too.
She ended her interview with “go in and get warm!”
I think he had the “Erica-snuggle on the couch with Snoopy” eyes, but it was radio, so I’m not sure.
Damon had a speech impediment that he got therapy for but he still has difficulty public speaking
That was big…how big?
“You know who big.”
If the Yankees win the WS I’m going on a Subway diet in honor of CC.
It was extremely pleasant watching the game on Fox, with the sound off, and my iPhone tuned to the WCBS broadcast on mlb.com. I could get a live boxscore as well on the iPhone.
McCarver? Buck? They announced the game?
I’m doing this in future all the time.
Great game…now if AJ isn’t too amped they can take the first two.
Great, great game by the big fella tonight!!
C-C!! C-C!! C-C!!
I thought it was an easy call to let CC pitch, but I wasn’t sure Joe would do it. The man was dealing and he had a pretty low pitch count; there is no one I would have wanted on the mound in the 8th except CC. The Angels didn’t touch him tonight – why give them a sniff of confidence against anyone else?
crack this door buddy!
Yes. They played Pearl Jam’s The FIxer at the end of the Fox broadcast. “Fight to get it back again”
no stadium isloud on a rally ending pop up
he’s covering
Just making it clear, I’m not knocking Damon, but it’s always jarring to see how uncomfortable he is during interviews because he always looks so relaxed around his teammates.
“I thought it was an easy call to let CC pitch, but I wasn’t sure Joe would do it. ”
Yeah, I’m glad Joe realized that CC in that spot is better than Hughes or Cokey.
Having CC turn Figgins around (for the 4th time) and face the lefty hitting Abreu was huge. A right-handed hitting Figgins is a few steps below Brett Gardner at the plate.
A year ago we were discussing how much they should offer CC.
The difference a year makes huh.
Scioscia thinks the stadium is loud, even though Ken doesn’t.
———–
Scioscia was giving his players some cover for a boneheaded play. No one believes that two players 5 feet apart can’t hear each other communicate because of crowd noise in the 1st inning.
Hurray for CC! Hurray for our Yankees! Terrific Game.
Mega Millions winning numbers were 10 13 18 33 51 MB 43.
I am all for leaving CC in for 8th inning. You can’t think about game 4 when you haven’t even put game 1 in the bag. We all know that Hughes wasn’t himself in ALDS, and this game is a must win. Leaving CC in for 8th inning will reduce the cance of dramas.
F*** yes
Having CC turn Figgins around (for the 4th time) and face the lefty hitting Abreu was huge. A right-handed hitting Figgins is a few steps below Brett Gardner at the plate.
=========
wasn’t that the argument for putting Marte on the roster?
Bronx Jeers: it would be amusing but cruel to revisit some of the discussions about CC a year ago. I think everyone’s on board now, though.
I really hope he goes in Game Four for both Yankee and selfish reasons.
Can Girardi stop doing that sucking sound.

Just a solid performance by the Yankees. If I can nit pick, it would have ben nice to get a couple more hits with runners in scoring position. But I’m confident those hits will come. This is one solid baseball team.

I think it was my really, really excellent CC cookies with Creme de Cacao (double CC!) that helped do the trick tonight!
On the pop up mis-play, it looked to me that neither player even made a call on the ball, neither opened his mouth, so it would be irrelevant whether or not the stadium was loud. Just a bad play.
McCarver is a jerk. Plain and simple. And Alex was NEVER tagged, but it doesn’t matter, I guess. And Tex was on the bag long enough for that ground out.
I love that our team took advantage of the breaks they got. So, good pitching, good defense, timely hitting and taking advantage of breaks – all good, all that I hoped for. What a great game for the Yankees.

“wasn’t that the argument for putting Marte on the roster?”
Not from me. If Marte faces Figgins of Morales, then that will negate any platoon advantage. Marte has been crushed by righties this year, and really in his career. So the switch hitters lose some effectiveness by batting righty, but Marte’s ineptness against righties will counteract it.

Just put out bowl of Apple Jacks. And make some kind of pie with a whipped cream topping.
After a big ALCS opening game 1 win, I just want to point out the ollowing dumb quote from an idiotic article that appeared in Men’s Jouranl earlier this year.
“Cashman has laid the foundation for 2009 to be maybe the most entertaining year for non–Yankees fans in the history of baseball. We are all trailing six car lengths behind, waiting for the pinstriped truck to jackknife and explode in a giant conflagration of scandals and finger-pointing. In an age when huge, irresponsible financial bets have brought Western civilization to the edge of collapse, Cashman’s Yankees are perfectly positioned to become an object lesson in everything that has gone wrong with American society in the past eight years or so.”

Doreen,
How about an apple pie for Andy? And make it with Fuji apples for Hideki.
JasonR,
It’s such a poorly constructed article, comparing the Yankees to the collapse of the US economy. Plus he fails witha circular argument blaming Cashman for using money to sign players and also blaming him for not having good teams. He also doesn’t seem to have any grasp on how the Yankees organization works or give Cashman credit for getting the Yankees into the playoffs every season this decade except 2008.
Anyway, it’s just fun to see how completely wrong this take is. Even if the team doesn’t win the LCS this has still been a great ride with a special team.

The “Money for Nothing” backpage News’ headline (when CC took the L on opening day) could rank with “Dewey Beats Truman.”
Saunders not really scarin me. AJ is the key.
Doreen,
I’m supposed to be baking for tomorrow morning, but I’m putting it off because I have a rare splitting headache.
But you’ve inspired me to try and work through the headache (it helps to have little elves to help in the kitchen).
Sorry, but this was the behind the scenes information on that commerical:
http://ohmurph.com/tag/cc-sabathia/
This is off topic slightly-
I was just thinking about that exchange between Girardi and the umpire when Rivera was coming into a game. Girardi was loose and joking (I am sure the lead helped).
There has been such a remarkable difference in Girardi from this year to last year. He is much more relaxed and forthcoming. Where do you think this change stems from??
I have a few thoughts
1) There is no doubt this is a more talented team than 2008
2) There is less front office talk. In 2008, Hankenstein would appear from nowhere and him and Hal would openly contradict each other. Hal is the new and much calmer face of the franchise.
3) Early in the season Hal expressed confidence in Girardi. he was no longer the first year Yankee manager trying to make his mark. He knew his team and he knew he had front office support
Can’t wit to hear about aj’s contract tomorrow. And just wait til Tex knocks one.
pat -
Then Apple Jacks would be even more perfect. I can make a cereal bar (like rice krispie treats) out of Apple Jacks.
You know, Lackey did pitch a very good game and they beat him anyway. I can’t wait to hear people talk tomorrow about the mistakes the infallible Angels made. However, I’m not getting too excited about that aspect; as Girardi said, you really don’t expect that to happen again. I wanted to mention the nice place Robi Cano made, too. I couldn’t post during the game thread, and I haven’t gone back to read. I’m not sleepy, so maybe I’ll go back to see what you guy were saying.
I was soo disappointed that Philly lost. Horrible 8th inning. Just horrible.
“Molina played a little coy, but said he hadn’t been told whether or not he would start tomorrow”
——————————–
I really don’t understand why Girardi is being so secretive about who is catching AJ. Just let Molina catch him and DH Posada against the lefty.
Mediots should talk just as much about the Yankees playing clean, crips baseball as they do about the Angels playing like little leaguers….
Okay, I like talking about baking much more than reading about bathing.
As of tonight, the Yankees are the Only Team in Postseason play Still Undefeated. CC was phenomenal tonight.
Well, the real story is the defensive lapses of the Angels. And it’s nice to know that they’re not perfect little Angels.
Guess who else was a good fundamentals team? That’s right, the Twins.
m
Don’t know if you are into home remedies or head straight for the Tylenol but eating something cinnamon helps with headaches.
I’d rather have Matsui’s bat than Posada’s tomorrow
pat,
I don’t do homeo or western. I usually drink a lot of water and sleep it off. If it doesn’t go away, then that means I have the flu. And if I need to go out, then I reach straight for the Sudafed severe cold remedy to alleviate the symptoms.
I’ll remember the cinnamon trick, though. Since the last tip you gave me worked out well.
Score would have been 2-1 without defenses lapses – right?
Yanks had the guys on base.
Actually, the real is CC…….I agree the Angels’ sad play is a big story, but it should be compared to the Yankees error-free play. The way people talk about the Angels it’s like they are perfect, but they found a way to lose a few games this year……so they must have done something wrong at some point, lol.
Sam- Can you find out when we can buy the Hats the Yanks wore tonight. I need one ASAP!!
Thanks
Nick Swisher, Johnny Damon and Teixeira wore special caps with Elmer Fudd-style ear flaps — Yankees equipment manager Rob Cucuzza said the team had stocked them all season but hadn’t used them before. Second baseman Robinson Cano wore a ski mask.
Think there going to sell the ones tex and co had?
The Phillies wore the same hats in the WS last season. They said the stores were selling them but I never saw them.
Boooo.. thanks though.. I thought they were new..They should. I would buy one
Did anyone else think Robi Cano looked like he was not feeling very well? I thought he looked like he was fighting a cold or something. Girardi sounded like he was fighting a cold (I know he’s also dealing with braces – I had braces as an adult and can very much sympathize).
Matt!

why does it seem like less people comment now?
They sold those hats last year at lids during the playoffs. Unfortunately the yanks didn’t have any need for them.. Hopefully playing into november this year and we will all need them.
Mark Feinsand is a dope – he was surprised that CC came out for the 8th? Thinks it makes no sense? LOL it’s the only thing that made sense………wow.
UNCLE!!!! THANK YOU!!!! YOU ROCK!!!!

Mr.McCarver you lose!
Hmmm. debating if i should buy one…..
Matt you’re welcome. Internets are a good thing
It seems that everyone has forgotten that the Yankees set a record for the number of errorless games played in a row this year.
Every team will make errors, but the Yankees being aggressive this series help increase the chances that errors will be made by the Angels. They see the aggressive moves, the running and they rush to make plays.
Its a reason why the Angels have been successful. They put other teams on edge because you have to be quick to make plays. The Angels aren’t used to having the tables turned on them.
We saw it with Gardner on the basepaths with them, we saw it tonight.
Good for cc
I like that 1-cent discount that Amazon is rocking.
lol Nick
and yes Uncle, internet is great!!!!… I like the hat, but not sure if i would just look like an idiot in it LOL
19 hours and 9 minutes until Game 2!!!!!!
Technically Cano was wearing a balaclava, which is different from a ski mask. Ski masks cover more.
I am semi-packed and wiped. I think its bedtime
Good night Yankee people!!!!
“It seems that everyone has forgotten that the Yankees set a record for the number of errorless games played in a row this year.”
I have not. Nor have I forgot that hte Yanks are the best team in baseball. No accident. No surprise.
Keep pitching well…..
I’m joining Erica – it’s bedtime. Night all – pleasant dreams!
statue-esque defense.
OK, how is Padilla the clutch performer of the day when CC did even better?
“I’m joining Erica – it’s bedtime.”
PPV.
Ive seen much more of the other infields of the playoff teams infields and the Yanks take a back seat to none of them. None!
Uncle, I really mean the media when I everyone has forgotten about the record setting errorless streak. These guys are good. Very good.
Good stuff Brandon, McCarver is really a knucklehead.
Just incase ppl missed it.

Mr.McCarver you lose… again!
Erica = Lace / Betsy = Stiletto ?
Sorry. Dont’ mind me, I’m just high on some NoCal th-CC.
Abda
got ya. It will be mentioned.
“Sorry. Dont’ mind me, I’m just high on some NoCal th-CC.”
It’s been addressed.
If it was the difference in the game, I would not have been happy with Alex running through a stop but since it wasn’t, I like the message it sent about the Yankees being able to be aggressive too. It also seemed to energize the crowd.
Lackey on the play at the plate “Oh, he (Mathis) definitely got hit in the head,” Lackey said. “But it’s October, man. I’d run over my mother in October.”
Lackey hoping to be signed by the Yankees?
Like I said in the past, we should make the most out of our ace CC Sabathia. With his incredible performance, no doubt the Yankee coaching staff is strongly considering starting Sabathia on Game 4 on three day rest.
