Who will get this week’s pie?

Whoever you’re picking to win the ALCS, it seems like the one thing most people agree on is that the Yankees and Angels are going to play some close games. What’s that mean? The likelihood of late-inning dramatics – and pies – goes up. Just for fun, here’s the full list off walk-off wins the Yankees have had this season. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the list gets a little longer this week.

April 22 vs. A’s: 9-7 in 14 innings, Cabrera two-run HR off Dan Giese

May 1 vs. Angels: 10-9, Posada two-run single off Brian Fuentes

May 15 vs. Twins: 5-4, Cabrera RBI single off Joe Nathan

May 16 vs. Twins: 6-4 in 11 innings, Rodriguez two-run HR off Craig Breslow

May 17 vs. Twins: 3-2 in 10 innings, Damon solo HR off Jesse Crain

May 23 vs. Phillies: 5-4, Cabrera RBI single off Brad Lidge

June 12 vs. Mets: 9-8, Rodriguez hits pop-up that Luis Castillo drops for error

July 4 vs. Blue Jays: 6-5 in 12 innings, Posada RBI single off Shawn Camp

July 20 vs. Orioles: 2-1, Masui solo HR off Jim Johnson

Aug. 7 vs. Red Sox: 2-0 in 15 innings, Rodriguez two-run HR off Junichi Tazawa

Aug. 12 vs. Blue Jays: 4-3 in 11 innings, Cano RBI single off Shawn Camp

Aug. 28 vs. White Sox: 5-2 in 10 innings, Cano three-run HR off Randy Williams

Sept. 8 vs. Rays: 3-2, Swisher solo HR off Dan Wheeler

Sept. 16 vs. Blue Jays: 5-4, Cervelli RBI single off Jason Frasor

Sept. 29 vs. Royals: 4-3, Miranda RBI single off Kyle Farnsworth

Oct. 9 vs. Twins (ALDS): 4-3 in 11 innings, Teixeira solo HR off Jose Mijares

And videos, of all of them.

Just got tickets to game 2 of the WS through the presale–now the hard part is hoping the Yankees get there!

  2. upstate kate October 16th, 2009 at 10:13 am

very nicely done Rebecca, I watched that earlier this am.

  3. Drive 4-5 October 16th, 2009 at 10:14 am

congrats Rebecca! I’m not having any luck!

  4. m October 16th, 2009 at 10:15 am

It’s not “sui” that means “water” in Japanese. Less fluids when talking about Hideki, please. :)

    Rebecca,

Thanks for the video. Someone mentioned that espn had shown it during the ALDS, and I was hoping to catch it.

I can’t even get excited about this game. Everyone’s got me all dampered with the talk of ugly weather.

Hopefully, that won’t be an issue and I’ll have baseball at 2:00.

  5. Erin October 16th, 2009 at 10:16 am

Rebecca, that’s an awesome video. Very well done.

I’m hoping Jeter’s name gets added to that list!!

  6. Joe October 16th, 2009 at 10:17 am

Oh wow, your lucky. Do you have a password you can share? I wasnt fortunate enough to win the password lottery.

“Walk-offs,” of course, happen only at home. Anyone have any idea how many times the Yankees have had the road equivalent of a walk-off, i.e. taking the lead in the top of the ninth and then holding it?

  8. Jimmy N October 16th, 2009 at 10:23 am

GREAT summary of all the walk-offs this year. THANKS!

Now if someone has a slow day at the office and makes a youtube compilation of all the walkoffs this year….. we’ll be golden.

  9. Drive 4-5 October 16th, 2009 at 10:24 am

darn..shut out of WS tix…everything is gone. That’s what happens when the Commish’s office takes 9,500 seats. Gota have those Fox sitcom stars’ face on the tube. It’s much better than selling the seats to the fans that have supported the team all year.

  10. 86w183 October 16th, 2009 at 10:24 am

Tonight’s walk off will be a bases loaded HBP when Brian Fuentes hits Jeter on the left wrist. Angels will have tied the game at 2-2 in the ninth with an unearned run off Mariano.

    Or not.

  11. MR.OCTOBER October 16th, 2009 at 10:25 am

REBECCA I just got two tix myself! The hard part for me is going to be routing for a GAME7!!!!

  12. 86w183 October 16th, 2009 at 10:26 am

    Drive 4-5 —

I understand your frustration. I’ve been there, done that. But it beats the hell out of trying to get Super Bowl tickets. Talk about virtually no opportunity for the people who supported the two teams throughout the season!

    Hi:

Yeah, congrats to whoever got through today. I’m a little annoyed. Got ALDS and ALCS with no problems, but got through at 10 a.m. on the nose this morning, hit Bleacher Seats for Game 1 and got nada, nothing. But the time I got back in there wasn’t a pair of cheap seats left for ANY game at all. That’s just crazy. Promised my son that if the Yankees got the Series we’d go. So I guess, if we get past the Angels, that I’ll be doing the StubHub thing or going to the Stadium day of game and hoping for the best.

  15. MR.OCTOBER October 16th, 2009 at 10:28 am

Could you imagine we had to line up outside the stadium on a day like today to get the tickets! Gotta love the internet!

  16. Shawn October 16th, 2009 at 10:28 am

Arod’s walk-off homerun on May 16th will always be special for me because I was at that game, which was my first game at Yankee Stadium and I was there with my girlfriend, roommate (who is a Twins fan) and his girlfriend. It was a great game and a great day and always puts a smile on my face when I see video from it :-) .

  17. Erin October 16th, 2009 at 10:30 am

Anybody have a particular favorite walk-off?

I think mine would have to be A-Rod’s 2 run HR against Boston. That was just a fantastic game all around.

  18. Rishi October 16th, 2009 at 10:31 am

Great list, Rebecca – will you keep updating it? (should I bookmark for future reference?)

  19. MR.OCTOBER October 16th, 2009 at 10:34 am

    JOE YANKEE
A little tip I got from someone that works for the Phillies is that whenever there is a presale the best thing to do is bypass the necessary game and go for a 5th 6th or 7th. The comissioners office swallows up the first games just to guarantee stars like Ashton Kutcher get a seat at the WS. Its BS but they want the stars there.

  20. upstate kate October 16th, 2009 at 10:35 am

I would go w/ A-rod’s against Boston too Erin. I also liked Cervelli’s when he just kept running into the outfield w/ everyone chasing him and the one of Melky’s where Gardner is the first to reach him.

    *************
Cervelli would definitely be my second pick too. I LOVE him, and I thought it was hilarious the way he started running. I think Kay said he was running for his life. LOL

  22. Laura October 16th, 2009 at 10:38 am

Best walk off is Alex’s HR in the 15th inning against BOS. Why? It allowed us to beat BOS and it ended a game that had been going on for way too long.

Will your winnings be enough to build a roof?? I think you will use the money to have johnny sign an extension..:)

You are very wise. I will consider this if I win.

I can buy a roof for the stadium. Or I can buy Johnny Damon :-)

  24. The Ghost October 16th, 2009 at 10:39 am

For some reason I thought Cabrera had 4. That last one must have been a premonition about tonight

  25. Rishi October 16th, 2009 at 10:41 am

Pete’s all a flutter on Twitter because there are tickets to tonight’s game still available on yankees.com…

  26. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Montero Fanaticus Primus October 16th, 2009 at 10:41 am

Erin: I did not make the Youtube video, just the post with the links. don’t want to take credit for something I didn’t do.

I’m not having an interesting adventure wherin I have two tickets and three people (including myself) that all want to or think they are going.

    It’s an interesting experience.

Never ceases to amaze what Jewish guilt can do to a person…

  27. 86w183 October 16th, 2009 at 10:42 am

My favorite would probably be Melky’s early season HR. I think it was so important for his confidence and for this team’s confidence in him.

  28. William Buckner October 16th, 2009 at 10:42 am

There are plenty of tickets available at Fenway too. For the off season tours.

  29. Ninja Burglar October 16th, 2009 at 10:43 am

Did Posada get a pie? Personally, I’d think twice.e

Just got two seats to Game 7… and they’re GOOD seats!

Now here’s hoping I get to use them…

  33. MR.OCTOBER October 16th, 2009 at 10:44 am

  34. Sal October 16th, 2009 at 10:44 am

Rishi: I plan to keep updating it. As I say in the post, if there’s a video you’d like, just leave a comment and I’ll do my best to find and add it.

  36. miggs - GTLU Reigning Champion October 16th, 2009 at 10:45 am

    I’m stunned.

I just went on StubHub out of curiosity to check the prices of tickets. 2 minutes later I almost pulled a shoulder muscle I couldn’t get my wallet out fast enough….

Field level seats below face value. To say I’m shocked would be an understatement.

I know the weather is bad but this is insane. Its the freaking ALCS!!!

Santa came early this year for me.

  37. Rishi October 16th, 2009 at 10:45 am

    Here’s what I don’t understand –

a lot of what I am reading/seeing says the the Angels beat up on Yankee pitching…Yankee defense is no match for Angels running…all those patient Angels hitters will break down Yankee pitching etc (lot of similar statements)

and then they pick the Yankees to win the series. How does that make any sense?

  38. GreenBeret7 October 16th, 2009 at 10:47 am

Here are the Yankee kids’ AFL and winter league numbers as of this morning. As you can see, Michael Dunn is still having control issues.

  39. Doreen October 16th, 2009 at 10:47 am

    Rishi -

So they can say the Yankees choked if the don’t win, that’s why. :) (only half kidding)

  40. timo October 16th, 2009 at 10:48 am

Probably as amazing as Jeter not being part of the walkoff parade is that he only scored the winning run on someone else’s walkoff hit once: that was in front of Alex’s HR off Tazawa, which was probably the biggest game of the regular season.

  41. jennifer October 16th, 2009 at 10:48 am

June 12 vs. Mets: 9-8, Rodriguez hits pop-up that Luis Castillo drops for error

That pie should have gone to Castillo.

Do you want to update your predictions for the CLS’s.

Wow. I cannot believe how much prices came down sicne I looked the other day. I think the weather is playing a bigger role than you think.

I really love this team, but I can’t stand outside in 40 degree rain for 5 hours

  46. William Buckner October 16th, 2009 at 10:52 am

“a lot of what I am reading/seeing says the the Angels beat up on Yankee pitching…Yankee defense is no match for Angels running…all those patient Angels hitters will break down Yankee pitching etc (lot of similar statements)”

The only time the Angels did any “beating up” of the Yankees was during the sweep in LA. That was the last time this season the Yankees really looked down the remainder of the season.

To me, bottom line about predictions are they aren’t worth the time or paper they are printed on. Go look at ESPN’s during the pre-season. Lots of Sox and Rays in the east.

  47. Patrick October 16th, 2009 at 10:52 am

    miggs,

Congrats on the tickets bud. Tonight’s game?

  48. miggs - GTLU Reigning Champion October 16th, 2009 at 10:55 am

Erica I hear what you’re saying but there’s only a 30% chance of rain at gametime (at least that’s what the forecast is right now this minute).

If it was supposed to rain all game I would have gotten seats under the overhang. As it looks right now it may not rain the entire game. Yeah its going to be cold… but these games are the reason I own a flask. The only question I have is what to put in it.

  49. Allie October 16th, 2009 at 10:56 am

hey guys…. question… how are people getting world series tix? i cant seem to find how to buy them? do i need a license?

  50. m October 16th, 2009 at 10:57 am

  51. trisha - OPPC lifetime member who trusts Jose Molina and Chad Gaudin October 16th, 2009 at 10:57 am

Allie, go to Stubhub and check it out.

  52. miggs - GTLU Reigning Champion October 16th, 2009 at 10:57 am

    Patrick,

Yeah tonight’s game. Thanks I’m pumped up.

Wasn’t planning on going at all but the prices are ridiculous. How could I NOT go?

This series could be over in 5 games, this may be my only chance to catch an ALCS game this year. How long has it been since the Yankees were in the ALCS? Simply a no-brainer IMO.

  53. Allie October 16th, 2009 at 11:00 am

trisha– thanks i thought everyone was getting them off the yankees site. ill check it out.

  54. @HSILVERM11375 October 16th, 2009 at 11:01 am

I have an extra ticket for the game tonight. If anyone wants it let me know. You can tweet me at @hsilverm11375

  55. m October 16th, 2009 at 11:05 am

There was a lot of Bobby A-boo-boo talk here yesterday. I didn’t realize this (or maybe I forgot about it), but Abreu turned down a $16M/2 year deal from the Rays early last winter.

Anyway, he’s turning down the same offer from the Angels. 3 questions:

    1. Do you think it’s strange to be negotiating during the postseason?

    2. What do you think of Abreu turning down the Angels’ offer?

    3. Would you want Abreu back on those terms?

  56. Joe Yankee October 16th, 2009 at 11:11 am

Thanks for the advice, Mr. October. I figured try for game one, then went to game two, then to game six. Nothing. I mean, I was on and through at 10 a.m. and was shut out. That’s ridiculous. So far as prices on StubHub for the ALCS, yeah, they’ve gone down like crazy because of the cold and the rain. Last regular game of the season I got front row 1st base line seats that go for $165 day of game for $35 each. So it never hurts to check out the Hub right before a game. Right now, though, the CHEAPEST seat on StubHub for any WS game is over $400. If those prices don’t go down, my son will be very, very disappointed that we can’t go, but $800 for a pair of tix just ain’t gonna happen in this economy.

  57. betsy October 16th, 2009 at 11:11 am

AJ, of course! He’ll get 25 pies – just like he predicted. If the Yankees win the WS, I’d love to see him pied……regardless of whether he was the hero or not.

  58. betsy October 16th, 2009 at 11:13 am

Um, I will not take that scenario – Jeter being hit on the wrist?

  59. Chris October 16th, 2009 at 11:16 am

Anyone know why Russo is on with Francesa today?

  60. Frank from Chatham, NJ October 16th, 2009 at 11:17 am

    Joe Yankee

I just looked at Stubhub and there are plenty of seats for less than $100. Try section 129 – row 19, $98. each.

You could shake Erica’s PBF’s hand from there!

  61. MR.OCTOBER October 16th, 2009 at 11:19 am

Is Russo really on with Francesa?

  62. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Montero Fanaticus Primus October 16th, 2009 at 11:20 am

Allie: there was/is a presale this morning.

  63. Frank from Chatham, NJ October 16th, 2009 at 11:20 am

I would love Abreu as our 2010 dh (75 games)/lf & maybe rf (total 40 games)

  64. Chris October 16th, 2009 at 11:22 am

Yeah he’s on. Says so on WFAN.com. I thought they got rid of this guy. Why have a crazy yankee hater on the radio, in yankee stadium on the day the Yankees get back to the ALCS?

I don’t know if he will be on only for an interview or for the whole show. Either way it isn’t something I imagine many are looking forward to listening to.

    Frank –

You really think so? I can barely listen to Mike these days. Guy has zero clue about the farm system. Shouts down callers whenever they don’t agree with him and generally doesn’t bring anything new to the table. Every time I listen to him it is a constant spew of arguments I’ve heard before. I appreciate it is difficult to talk about something unique everyday, but once in a while wouldn’t hurt.

Russo wont add anything except for intense uneducated bias
