When the weather outside is frightful …

… everyone has a different approach to how to handle it. Personally, I think more Yankees should go with the “Obi-Wan Kenobi” look that Kate Hudson had, but that’s just me. Thanks to the LA Times for the Kendry Morales photo. No word on whether he, Robinson Cano (right) and Erick Aybar went out robbing banks after the game.

In keep-your-fingers-crossed news, it’s not raining at this very moment in Connecticut. So that seems like a good thing. Latest forecast I’ve seen isn’t good – still rain coming tonight – but at least today hasn’t been a total washout (yet). We’ll keep you posted.

Geez Kate, at least smile when you’re cold.

  2. Mark in Tampa October 17th, 2009 at 11:19 am

In late season football games, you can usually tell the guys who will not play well, or not have their heads in the game-it is the players who are wearing every piece of cold weather gear they can find. They are thinking about the weather instead of the game-usually. At least Cano played well on defense, I was worried when I first saw him in the bank robber’s mask. But it was the Angels who mostly dressed and played like their main concern was staying warm.

  3. Ben October 17th, 2009 at 11:20 am

If it gets rained out, why would they play tomorrow afternoon, competing with the NFL? They could make Monday a travel day and play Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in LA.

    Buster’s take on CC:

    ========================================================

Sabathia giving Yankees whatever they need

    Saturday, October 17, 2009 | Feedback | Print Entry

Margie Sabathia flew into New York the other day, and if she and her son held to family tradition late Friday night, then they probably hung out someplace in his home for 15 or 20 minutes to talk about his performance in Game 1, to talk about how nasty the conditions were and how he commanded his fastball. (She’s always telling him to use his fastball more.)

She raised Carsten Charles Sabathia mostly on her own, with help from family, and somewhere along the way she instilled in him a deep sense of accountability. His is not the story of a teenage athlete who was constantly catered to by adults from the time he demonstrated that he could throw a baseball really hard. No, Margie sent her moping son home on his bike when he complained about an umpire’s call as a kid, or a tough inning, and when he was sophomore in high school and he was the biggest and best athlete in the room, she yanked him off the basketball team because he’d gotten a “C” in Spanish. He begged her to relent, the coach asked her to relent, and Margie held firm. He must be responsible for his actions and choices, she insisted.

To gain more of Buster’s insight into Sabathia, you must be an ESPN Insider.

Sabathia’s concerns about playing in New York were real, reflected by the fact that he has an out in his contract after three seasons, and they were legitimate. It can be a miserable place to play for a veteran star who drops in from another town, as Chuck Knoblauch, Denny Neagle and others can attest, because the fans and the media have embraced the Steinbrenner Doctrine that you are a failure if you don’t win the World Series. Everything that Sabathia has accomplished to this point would be flushed if the Yankees suddenly slumped and failed to win seven more games.

But Sabathia took the challenge — and, yes, $161 million — and has not shrunk or shirked for an instant; rather, he has stepped up and shouldered the responsibility with aggressive success very rarely seen in professional sports (David Beckham is an excellent example of someone who decidedly did not live up to the hype).

He has been an All-Star and a Cy Young Award winner and yet he has made adjustments and changes, when necessary. He has worked on tempering his own internal engine (something Clayton Kershaw will do, eventually), because it sometimes sidelined him. He began employing a cut fastball, refined a changeup, began employing a slide step to slow down would-be base-stealers.

And midway through this season, he listened to the advice of pitching coach Dave Eiland and started throwing a two-seam fastball, a weapon that fits in perfectly with Sabathia’s repertoire; Sabathia could throw hard inside with his cutter, and he had the soft stuff inside and outside with his breaking ball and changeup, and now he has a fastball that veers away from right-handed hitters outside of their reach. Time and again, the Angels’ hitters seemed to give up on pitches at the edge of the plate, or just off it.

When Sabathia walked into the Yankees’ clubhouse on Thursday morning, he still had some semblance of a pillow face, appearing as if he’d been fast asleep less than an hour before. But it wasn’t long after that he went to the interview room and said in his cheerful, matter-of-fact manner that he was ready to give the Yankees whatever they needed — whether it be two starts or three starts in this series against the Angels, whether it be in cold weather or warm weather, whether it means throwing 120 or 130 or 140 pitches.

He’ll do whatever he is asked to do, and he won’t make excuses; Margie Sabathia cured him of that many years ago.

    He just wants to win.

    Good article Rishi, thanks.

Have to think the weather is somewhat of a HFA. The Yankees played a lot of their season in similar conditions. Had to laugh at Cano and some of the Angels w/ their masks. Fall and spring sports up here are always played in the cold, often in the rain (sometimes snow) and I have never seen anyone- player or parent- wear a mask.

    What is this from Rosenthal?

    http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/s.....an-reality

This was the kind of mistake-filled defensive game you expected from the Yankees, not the Angels. The kind we still might see from the Yankees once or twice in this series if the Angels apply their normal offensive pressure.

***Um, why would we expect that kind of game from the Yankees? They’ve had a few of these this year, but so what? Every team has. To literally expect it from the Yankees is ridiculous. They didn’t win 103 games because they were the Keystone Cops

Compete with the NFL ? First of all CBS has the double header and there is no 4 pm Fox football in NY. Second the games fox has at 4pm is the Eagles vs Raiders and Seahwaks vs Cards . So maybe those makets wont see the game. 4 pm Sunday is fine. But its dry out now so maybe alll those weather projections where wrong

Thanks for the recommendation, even if it is written by Jackie M. Just kidding! She’s a pioneer to be sure, but it was obvious from her Around the Horn appearance which teams she covers. ;)

Has there ever been 2 diametrically opposite athletes lock horns like that for so long? It’s amazing that they’re friends now.

The worst of the weather appears to be over/approaching the Stadium now. Hopefully it will be clear by gametime, but still will be cold and wet no matter what.

Could be a big advantage for the Yankees if AJ is throwing 98 MPH gas on the hands of the LA hitters, vs Saunders soft stuff. Nobody wants to see AJ’s stuff in good weather, let alone 40′s and miserable. The brilliant Scioscia may have made a mistake in starting Saunders, Kazmir could have been much more effective in this type of weather.

Rosenthal acknowledges that this may be a short series, so he is getting as much chatter as he can, also keeping angels fanaticos content… midgets

  25. Betsy October 17th, 2009 at 11:46 am

I give up – I’m not reading any more articles about this series. First it’s Rosenthal and then it’s Davidoff, saying that he was surprised CC came out for the 8th and it’s very possible that that decision reflected on Joe’s lack of confidence in Hughes. That is complete BS.

  26. Abdababdaserser October 17th, 2009 at 11:47 am

upstate kate, I’ve been saying that quite a bit through the threads here and have complained to both Fox and to Rosenfail.

The Yankees are being aggressive enough to force the Angels to hurry their plays. They aren’t used to having to do that.

  27. MaineYankee October 17th, 2009 at 11:48 am

It’ll be interesting to see how all the writers approach the Red Sox. They’ve trumpeted the Sox farm system, but as we’ve seen it’s really bottom heavy. Will the writers be pollyanna or will they have their rapiers sharpened? From what I’ve seen, it’s the latter.

Isn’t that what the people want anyway. Most of the country hates NY and the Yanks so give em what they and their advertisers want.

    Maybe they’ll buy their cars.

  40. m October 17th, 2009 at 11:58 am

    MaineYankee,

Sheed will help, if he can avoid the ejections. :)

The Celtics/Cavs/Magic will be locked into a mean battle all the way through the playoffs. Too tough to call. I think we all have to hope that Shaq loses gas. Will they ride him for home court advantage (as we’ve seen, very important) or will they conserve him for the playoffs?

  41. upstate kate October 17th, 2009 at 11:59 am

I miss our YES guys, glad we at least have the post game. It gets tiring hearing the same old same old…payroll, cost of seats, HRs etc. The Yankees are not just a HR hitting team, they are good at small ball and capitalizing on mistakes too. They also have a great defense, at least Tex and Robbie do get some credit for that.

I thought it was pretty funny that the enthusiasm in Buck’s voice dropped every time the Yankees increased their lead. And then he had to keep saying that for the past few years everytime the Yankees took game 1 from the Angels the Angels came back and won the series. This could be a long series having to listen to him and McCarver. And was it just me or did they both seem thrilled with Mo walked the first batter in the 9th?

  49. upstate kate October 17th, 2009 at 12:05 pm

  54. Bronx Jeers October 17th, 2009 at 12:07 pm

Why does MLB make itself a slave to a TV schedule ?

Both teams ended their series on Sunday.

So we’re all just sitting around waiting for the cold, rainy weekend to start?

The players don’t want to wait. The fans don’t want to wait. So who are we waiting for?

How about an early start today? No, instead let’s wait for it to get colder and wetter. Makes sense because day games on Saturdays are unheard of.

The fact is is that MLB and the networks are in bed with each other and we’re just lucky somebody leaked the dark, blurry sex tape of the action.

We wait for the cold rainy night game because the day game isn’t worth as much in advertising dollars because of the college football games on competing networks.

FOX can’t charge the same rates and hence MLB won’t get the highest price possible for the rights and so on and so forth.

And what is Selig making in salary?

  55. Michael October 17th, 2009 at 12:10 pm

    Sam,

Do you know if there was any talk yesterday about moving the start time to 3:00 or 4:00 PM today? With the forecast for today or tomorrow, this seems like an easy fix . . . . although I know FOX probably would have gone off the deep end.

  57. jennifer October 17th, 2009 at 12:10 pm

  58. upstate kate October 17th, 2009 at 12:11 pm

If the AL was allowed to follow a similar schedule, today would have been game 3 in LA.

But that would have meant changing the schedule. And that’s an idea whose time is clearly not the present.

    Betsy,

Just because someone has a credential tag to cover games does not mean they have any insight. It doesn’t preclude them from having insight, but it does not automatically grant them baseball wisdom.

They have access the the players, managers, coaches and media notes. They also have editors who often make editorial decisions on what they “should” be writing about – even though they themselves are disconnected from the day-to-day happenings on a given beat – based on beating the rival paper, etc.

To say these guys often manufacture stories is not an over statement. You hear Pete: “I don’t root for any team – I root for my story.”

This is supposed to humble us all that he’s rooting for his “story.” For me, it betrays a lack of objectivity; a writer shouldn’t have “his” own “story” – he should report the facts, and not try to pigeon hole what he sees into a pre-conceived narrative.

Of course CC comes back out for the 8th. We all were sure that was going to happen, freezing out there yesterday (and I mean FREEZING).

to Mac Daddy: “How do you walk Melky Cabrera twice?”

Here’s how: Melky has always been able to hit breaking balls and offspeed pitches. While our bigger slug guys where flailing on Lackey’s change and CB, Melky was making contac t and fouling the ball off to hang in there. It’s not that complex to understand.

Further, Melky was on base 3X as the No. 9 hitter. No way he’s getting replaced.

I thought Girardi was smart to stay w/ CC. He was pitching well, pitch count wasn’t too high and getting the win would really set the tone for the series. It allowed the bullpen to rest, in case they have to be used more w/ AJ, or weather problems.

Further, Melky was on base 3X as the No. 9 hitter. No way he’s getting replaced.
    *******************************

Yep. Plus he saw a lot of pitches in his AB’s and was key part in driving up Lackey’s pitch count.

  75. Betsy October 17th, 2009 at 12:36 pm

Angel, thanks! I turned it on at the right time……..no point in sitting through innings where the Yankees did nothing.

    Angel,

Absolutely – we needed that plate patience and coverage he provided. Melky gives our lineup a different look – contact hitter with some speed at the bottom of the order, in front of Derek. Doesn’t need to do anything super heroic to impact the game.

And wasn’t it amusing that they threw the ball away w/Melky on first, giving him 2B easy?

Wasn’t that supposed to be us? An anxiety-filled infield, forced into throwing errors because of the the threat of the Angels’ base-running tyranny?

    LOL.

  81. Bronx Jeers October 17th, 2009 at 12:42 pm

I thought about pulling CC as well given he may need to pitch on short rest.

But the fact is is that you manage the game you’re playing right now. Not the game 4 days from now and CC has been excellent as his own 8th inn guy. The way CC was pitching last night, there’s only 1 guy in the pen that could match that. And he did pitch last night.

Maybe if the lead was a few runs greater. Then we see Phil, Joba etc come out for the 8th.

  82. JD October 17th, 2009 at 12:43 pm

The Yanks broke the consecutive games without an error record this year. Rosenthal makes it sound like they’re hacks. This team can pick it and mash. Get used to it and get used to 27.

The funny thing is that he wasn’t really dogging it when it took him forever to get to second on that double. He only went into his HR trot for about 3 or 4 steps. He just can’t run anymore.

  86. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing October 17th, 2009 at 12:47 pm

    Yep, Bodhi.

I posted a YouTube video of all the walkoff wins this year. I’d forgotten that Melky was responsible for more than one of them. He has definite value in the Yankee lineup. He saw 24 pitches all by himself last night, if my count was right. Thats about an inning earlier towards getting the starter out of the game, all by himself.

    What is this from Rosenthal?

    http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/s…..an-reality

This was the kind of mistake-filled defensive game you expected from the Yankees, not the Angels. The kind we still might see from the Yankees once or twice in this series if the Angels apply their normal offensive pressure.

***Um, why would we expect that kind of game from the Yankees? They’ve had a few of these this year, but so what? Every team has. To literally expect it from the Yankees is ridiculous. They didn’t win 103 games because they were the Keystone Cops”

Not only that, this Yankee team also set a record for consecutive non-error games in the beginning of the season previously held by the Red Sox.

In reality though, this is the kind of mistake-filled/Bias sports reporting you would expect from Rosenthal. Someone who still reports on Arod as if he’s even a story this year while ignoring his rival buddy David Ortiz.

  88. rb October 17th, 2009 at 12:47 pm

I find it almost amusing that the media is questioning leaving CC in for the 8th when just a few days ago they were saying that Joe G overmanaged in the LDS. Can’t win.

Not to mention batting in front of Jeter, he helps frustrate the pitcher a little maybe before Jeter’s AB – by making him work whether its a hit, walk or out as the end result.

  91. m October 17th, 2009 at 12:49 pm

I don’t know about that, bru.

    3 reasons.

    1. Melky got on base 3x as someone mentioned.
    2. If Molina plays, you won’t see Gardner & Molina in the same lineup.
    3. Gotta stock up pinchrunners on the bench that you’re never going to use. :)

  92. Mark in Tampa October 17th, 2009 at 12:50 pm

I find the Angels baserunning talk very overblown. Figgins stole 42 bases, Abreu 30. Nobody else stole more than 18. I don’t consider somebody stealing less than 1 base every 9 games to be a basestealer. Further, Abreu is a decent runner, but his steals mainly come when the defense doesn’t pay attention to him. The only threat to run when you are concentrating on stopping them is Figgins.

To listen to everybody talk, you would think we are playing the ’85 Cardinals.

    =====

Yeah, I understand. But I do think Pete was pretty invested in, for instance, having Melky fail so Brett Gardner could usurp him.

I remember the “Melky’s probably on a bus headed out of town right now” and the cherry-picked, ridiculously small sample sizes of hitting – perhaps trying to will him into being dreadful so Gardner could carry the day.

& the ARod harangue was definitely Pete’s favorite “story” – in an email to me, he attempted to justify his position, because “I don’t like the way Alex treats people.”

Well, even if he had a point, his personal feelings about Alex doesn’t have any place in his reporting – suggesting Cody Ransom is a better 3B option for the Yankees will garner no points for credible sports journalism from me.

And as a former sportswriter…Oh, I could tell you…but let it be.

David Ortiz has gained a lot of weight since that 2003 ALCS, and he was no spring chicken back then.

  105. Betsy October 17th, 2009 at 12:57 pm

E-gawa, I think the mediots are so surprised that the perfect Angels made some mistakes that they feel it’s just a fluke……..and then, in order to show how surprised they are, resort to insulting the Yankees.

I never liked David Wells – too bad this HR he gave up to Ortiz isn’t the extent of his problems in the 2003 post-season. It’s weird to think that AJ was on that Marlins team and was around at the old YS to celebrate. Of course he didn’t pitch at that time, but still…….It’s also weird to look at Damon and think that, in just a few years, he’d be a beloved and integral part of the Yankees. Of course I can’t really look at him – his caveman look is hideous.

  106. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Montero Fanaticus Primus October 17th, 2009 at 12:57 pm

  107. upstate kate October 17th, 2009 at 12:58 pm

You hear a lot about the Angels base stealing but not so much about how often they are caught. I think they have a 70% success rate, and the Yankees is higher. of course sometimes the threat of stealing is more effective than the stealing itself.

  109. Pov October 17th, 2009 at 1:00 pm

Thought I’d throw out some thoughts. The key tonight is that AJ cuts his walks and does not throw that occasional gopher ball. Getting him to 6 and then being able to start the congo chain from the bullpen is probably all we need.

I’d like to see the Yanks hit a bit better tonight, they didn’t tear the cover off the ball except for that Texeira smash and absent the Halo miscue’s it would have been a pretty close game.

I think tonight is a pretty critical game, anybody agree?

The Angels’ running game includes going first to third on singles, not just stealing bases. Yes, it’s important to keep baserunners close, but not just because they might steal second.

Not sure why, the loss of one’s father at a young age – because the father walked out on the family and not because of what is called “death” – didn’t at least provide context, if not sympathy, for Alex’s neediness and self-absorption.

Yankees-80% basestealing success rate, 111 steals

I see this game tonight as different than last night. I tend to think it’s a 6-3 6-4 type of game.

I’m pretty sure we will see Joba tonight, maybe for a couple of innings depending on how the AJ pitch count goes. Joe I think has in his mind a AJ, Ace, Joba, Hughes, MO kind of plan, subtracting pitchers depending on how far AJ gets. Maybe Coke slips in their for a batter.
