Sabathia starting Game 4

Chad Jennings

Joe Girardi just announced that C.C. Sabathia will start Game 4 in Los Angeles.

Girardi said Sabathia did some work today so that the Yankees could gauge how he feels, and Sabathia feels good.

“He’s had success going on short rest if you look at last year’s numbers, so we’re comfortable doing it,” Girardi said.

Good you go for the jugular, don’t mess around.

  2. Emobacca

    Hell yes

No screwing around. End this series quickly.

  3. Razor Ray

I’d say if we are up 3-0… just throw gaudin…

  4. jennifer

Razor, no you don’t play around! You go for it!

  5. JoeyA

When is the WS scheduled to begin?

  6. Pat

I agree – show no mercy and go for the win. No more playing around.

  7. Joe from Long Island

Go for the jugular. Step on their neck. Rip their heart out. Refer to whatever piece of anatomy you want, but pitch CC. He’s your best, and you go with your best.

  8. Mo

Of course you do this. Unless it goes 7, CC will be available for Game 1 of the WS regardless, so you go for the jugular and set it up so that if it does go 7, you have him on the hill, on full rest, at home.

  9. Jeremy

Yeah I agree. Even if the Yanks are up 3-0 you finish them off. Throw CC out there, don’t give them a chance to come back. You would think some fans would know better after the 2004 ALCS.

  10. jennifer

Does everyone forget what happened in 2004? Joe played around and wanted to set up his WS rotation. Instead of winning the ALCS.

  11. BJK

Absolutely pitch CC in game 4 even if we’re up 3-0.

If the Angels want to advance, they’ll have to beat CC twice.

He’d be fully rested for an “all hands on-deck” Game 7.

  12. jennifer

CC will still be able to start game one of the WS even if he pitches in game 4.

  13. Neil

    Jennifer ;

We must remember that only 4 players remain from the Torre led team of 2004.
The manager is different is so is the sense of urgency.
That was then and now is now.

  14. raymagnetic - (Big Game Pettitte = Yanks up 3-0)

It’s a no brainer to pitch CC. Gaudin hasn’t pitched in like forever and at this point Joba can probably go three innings the most.

Just pitch CC and let him pitch a gem in front of his family and friends.

I truly believe Pettitte is going to handcuff them tomorrow night and then CC is going to put the series away.

“I think that Pete left when he did because of business reasons. Think about it. If Pete waited till after the postseason to move to the Globe, there would have been little intertest from which to build his new blog audience. The Globe editors were banking on the Sox getting deep into the postseason to enable Pete to engage with his new audience. Didn’t happen. The Sox were three and done. The Globe editors, I’m pretty sure, insisted upon Pete starting his new gig when he did. We shouldn’t blame Pete.

As for how everyone is dealing with Pete’s being gone, I think that it’s a classic human reaction of how people cope with loss. Aesop nailed it in his fable about the fox and the grapes. Can’t get the grapes? Console yourself by declaring that they were sour anyway. Pete was the BlogFather. Big loss. Sour grapes”

  16. Ed - 2009 will be the year of the Yanks

World Series starts on the 28th. so if the Yanks sweep the Angels, the Yanks would have 8 days of rest.

Yes. And to face a very inferior Cardinals team. But yeah, he was a great manager.

  21. Joe D

    You go with the horse.

  22. Doreen

In 2004 I didn’t pay too much attention to strategy (no LoHud blog!). Remind me what happened, please? :)

  23. Jeremy

Joe was a great manager, but from the 2003 World Series to the 2007 ALDS he became a bad manager. In 2004 he made so many mistakes that caused the Yankees to collapse to the Red Sox. I like Joe Torre but he had to go. And he should have have left after 2004.

I particularly find the posters amusing who think this blog is popular because of their personal participation. Whatever… Most of the time, I simply checked the blog for updates from Pete and skipped past the comments entirely.

Pete built an amazing machine that we can only hope will be properly maintained by the new guys. And thanks again, Chad, Sam and Josh — you’ve done a good job for us in the playoffs.

Can’t say I agree with you there. What makes this blog popular is the conversation that takes place here between the posters.

When I stumbled upon this blog I stayed because of the constant back and forth between other people. It’s like being at a bar talking sports with people you may not know. As long as it stays updated the conversation will continue regardless of who the new “blogmaster” is.

  32. GreenBeret7

Sanchez with 5 interceptions today. The rookie is having a tough day. Not much more than 125 yards passing.

Weaver is very beatable.Kazmir was smacked around in beantown in the division series, even though the socks lost.I hope the Yankees wear them out.Kazmir was traded because of a lowering of his velocity.
The Yankees beat their #’s 1-2,and 3-4 are beatable too.

Yankees have the Angels backed up on their heels.
Game #3 is a life line for the Angels.Don’t think Weaver won’t be pressured.

    Exactly.

I call it a symbiotic relationship, defined as: any interdependent or mutually beneficial relationship between two persons, groups, etc.

Both parts were necessary to make this blog the success it became; but make no mistake, without Pete’s nurturing, especially in the early days of the blog when the comments were tentative and before the relationships among the posters started to form, this blog would be like all the others.

In fact, Pete’s interaction with the people who commented, early on, I believe gave the clear indication that interaction was encouraged, rather than a series of singular comments relating to the subject of the original post. This blog became a conversation.

Joe, you’ll love Charleston and so will Mrs. Joe. If you love history, it’s all here, from Ft. Sumpter in Charleston Harbor to The USS Yorktown achored nearby as a floating museum. The food is sensational. Not sure of your price range, but, I’d suggest a Bed and breakfast like The Meeting Street Inn. Beautiful rooms and close to the shops surrounding the old slave markets. Restaurants are everywhere.

At least one night, I’d suggest a private carriage ride that ae available. Tour down Rainbow Row (all of the homes are different pastel colors, and most were damaged in the early 1700s by one of the biggest earthquakes to ever hit the East Coast. Civil War sites all around the area. Not sure what your plans are after that, but, a drive by car is a 2 hour run to Savannah, which is the sister city to Charleston.

  46. Doreen

    Anyhoo -

Back to a conversation thread. People were talking about what Joe Torre did in 2004 to set up his rotation for the WS in a premature way. At the time, I didn’t really pay attentionto strategy (no blog!!). What did Torre do?

  47. Sun Devil

Incidentally, The Angels DON:T play in LA, they play in Anaheim.

Anaheim is 30 miles south of LA. The even have different airports serving the area.

It’s would be like calling the San Francisco Giants the San Jose Giants or the Baltimore orioles the D.C. orioles or the Green Bay PAckers the Milwaukee Packers. It’s a fiction to call them the LA angels.

  48. Wait till the ALCS

About time they actually announced this.

Yanks actually DO have a chance to sweep.

I called a sweep but I didn’t really believe it.

Honestly, I found it weirdly hard to get psyched up for my Giants. It’s like I’m spending all my energy on the Yankees.

I had a bade feeling about today’s game. It’s no big deal IMO, but the Saints ARE the better team. They’re a rteam I wouldn’t be shocked to see go undefeated.

  53. Joe

I agree on pitching cc on 3 days rest but I just get a lil worried about messing him up

  54. Doreen

Wow – Ryan Howard gets a 2-rbi triple in the first.

Joe from Long Island………..I can add me to the long list of Jet fans who have suffered since January 12th 1969…..The day Sonny Werblin made that deal with the devil….Many a December free fall…..Jeremy, maybe you should take a look at the pitching staffs / bullpens that Joe Torre had to work with after the 2003 season…..I was more disturbed with losing to the Marlins than I was with the loss of 2004….

  57. Doreen

I’m starting to think maybe it’s worth putting up with the Torre stuff rather than face the Phillies.

So, as of now, officially, I’m rooting for 7 games and depleted bullpens and tired players for both teams! :) (In the N.L.)

    GB7 – Thanks a lot. How’s the weather around November – December?

    ————————————————————

WOW!!! That’s a loaded question, Joe. Day time temps could be in the 60s and 70s, but, they’ve gotten as high as the low 90s recently. It does get a bit wet down there in Nov-Dec. The nights aren’t usually freezing but do get rather chilly. Coats/sweaters are a must. My guess is to expect 50s and 60s and hope for better. If you need some links to hotels/restaurants, let me know.

  59. Ken

I said before, Im more worried about the Phillies. They are an American League offense. I want Torree and the Dodgers. I think the Yankees and Phillies would be a war. I can see that series going either way. Dodgers line up doesnt scare me nearly as much.

  60. pat

    Tough start for Kuroda….

the saints are not going undefeated no chance. the giantsstunk today but they can rectify the issues. game 5 or 6 of 16 relax.

when the giants d line struggles they are ver yavg. they need to get cantyout there and bolley and ross…umenyiora stunk today..they struggle against huge lines ie. dallas etc..

that is a problem…btw the refs sucked; the holding on ohara was nonexistent. the tripping on webster was a bad call. the non fumble on shanle should have been a touchback, and someone should teach aikman the rules. the horse collar on beckum on the kick or punt was not a penalty also. nfl officiating is as bad as baseball

I’d rather face the Dodgers because Philly is better (although they have no eighth inning guy).

So I hope L.A. pulls off the upset.

  64. Wait till the ALCS

When the Giants get healthy, they could compete with any team, including the Saints.

Still, they had a big game. Not shocking. I got the sense they were unprepared after beating on bad opponents that the Eagles can’t beat (had to put that in there).

  65. Doreen

Okay. So there’s nobody here who wants to say what Torre did to mess up the rotation in 2004 to sabotage the ALCS? :)

  66. GreenBeret7

The Dodgers are possibly the better match-up for NYY’s bullpen, since they are predominantly right handed hitters. The have a better rotation and bullpen, but, Philadelphia has a heavy hitting lineup. Neither one will be a pushover for the Yanks. Right now, my only focus is on what Andy Pettitte does tomorrow and whether Cano, Teixeira, Swisher and Matsui start hitting.

  67. Chambliss

I really don’t want to read much about 2004. It is over. Long over.

Girardi is taking advantage of his biggest weapon. CC weighs 290 lbs. according to the media. My guess is that he ie easily 300 lbs, and we’re not talking about fat. We are talking about a large man in the prime of his career who can easily perform at a high level on three days rest.

I don’t have the exact stats, but CC pitched several starts in a row on three days rest last year. Eventually this caught up with him, but it took a while.

CC was very well rested going into the postseason. He got extra rest going into his last few starts, and the Tampa start was abbreviated.

This isn’t about Boston. This is about going with a three man rotation because it makes the most sense given the personnel. CC, AJ and Andy are all solid right now. Joba and Gaudin present some question marks as starters, and Joba gives the team an important weapon out of the pen where he is very effective.

The Angels are very tough at home. They are going to put up a fight this week.

  68. Wait till the ALCS

In 04′ the team was completely different. They had no Ace; pitching matchups were seemingly always against us. We had Kevin freaking Brown starting game 7 for goodness sake. Now we have that guy who we can give the ball to and feel confident of victory in CC. And our other starters are pretty good too.

Was that a “Yankees suck” chant I just heard from the crowd at Philly ?

    ****

Probably. In Atlantic City last night there were pretty large groups of Philly fans rooting against the Yankees.

Thankfully, the number of people rooting for the Yankees exceeded them.

I was also successfully able to start an “A-Rod” chant at the bar during the extra innings

  73. Betsy

I’m not sure how I feel about that……..if the Yankees lose tomorrow, Sabathia vs. Kazmir is not an easy game. If they lose that, they don’t have him until a potential 7th game…..I know CC has good #s on 3 days rest, but I don’t think I like this move.

  74. Betsy

Jen, how can the Yankees go for the jugular if they don’t yet have a 3-0 lead? It could easily be 2-1 – I really think this is a foolish decision.

  75. mick

Philly-NY will be a fan war.

Talk about Ny-Boston, this will be worse.

Not only are they closer to each other mileage-wise, they are tempermentally on the same level.

Philly is more blue-collar than Boston and won’t quit on their team like Boston does.

  76. terpbomber

I don’t mind C.C. going for game four, assuming Andy puts the penultimate nail in the coffin and C.C. repeats what he did in game one. The offense needs to be there. Good pitching did beat good hitting, but it can only go so far against a team like this!

When interviewed on WFAN, Jeff Nelson said prior to game two that if the Yankees won, they probably would sweep the Angels. If that’s the case, the rotation should be well rested to take of those “other” four games.

Torre, on the other hand, most likely didn’t think the 2004 ALCS would go the distance, hence we got stuck with those clunkers of a pitcher to finish off game 6 and 7. Kevin Brown, anyone?

  77. mick

    betsy

if its 2-1 do you want gaudin or cc?

  78. Wait till the ALCS

How is this a foolish decision, at all? It’s either CC or Chad Gaudin. CC every time. What’s the arguement against it? THat CC might lose? Well sure, but it’s more likely Gaudin loses. you try to give your team the best chance to win.

  79. Carl

    Betsy

You want Chad Gaudin pitching if its 2-1?

  80. Erica - always OPPC

I am really, really hoping the Yankees sweep

On a completely selfish level, I cannot deal with the DVR headache of a Thursday night Game 5

  81. Wait till the ALCS

Eh, I know Philly fans. Philly-NY will not be as bad as NY-Boston. I’m sorry, but NY-Boston is on a whole other level of every rivalry I know.

  82. Betsy

Joe, I’m going to Savannah and Charleston this week. Do not think about Charleston, just GO GO GO. There isn’t a more beautiful, historic city in this country – and the food is incredible. I could write a love song to Charleston if I were inclined, that’s how much I am enamored of it. There is so much to see and do……and did I mention the food?

  83. raymagnetic - (Big Game Pettitte = Yanks up 3-0)

    Betsy,

Think about it this way. If CC pitches on normal rest then he starts 1 more game and the Yankees lose him for the rest of the series.

They would also need another pitcher to pitch game 4 as well. Gaudin hasn’t pitched in forever and Joba isn’t going to be able to pitch more than 3 innings.

  84. G.R.

I feel compelled to weigh in on the “Pete” saga. I expect my 2 cents won’t mean much to most as I don’t post very often, but I HAVE been around the blog for quite some time now. I remember searching for some place to get updates on the Yankees during the off season. I ended up on one of the other beat writer blogs and followed a link by a poster to Pete’s. I was amazed at the amount of info he provided. It takes quite a lot of dedication to provide that much info for us, especially IF he wasn’t even a Yankee fan! He worked for a paper here and was assigned to cover the Yankees. The amount of work he put into building this blog was outstanding! Any time of day or night he had up to the minute info!

I think that Chad, Sam and Josh have done an outstanding job with the blog and I plan to stick with it. But I think the dissing of Pete who built this thing is idiotic. We don’t all agree on everything and are all entitled to our individual opinions. That’s what makes it interesting and keeps people coming back. If Pete really IS a Sox fan, then I think it was incredible that he covered the Yanks as well as he did, as a true journalist. I wish him all success in his endeavors there.

Let’s just REALLY enjoy this team and the great run we’re having!

Wait till the ALCS……And Kevin Brown swore to Torre that he was good to go for Game 7 ( 2004 )…Torre asked him several times and Brown insisted the was good….We all know how Game 7 turned out & several here continue to call out Torre for exposing Brown in his book…I alwayd felt that Brown lied to him and once that trust was broken, Torre would more than comfortable in telling the world what a piece of crap Keven Brown was…..I heard about him during his tenure here in LA……Davy Johnson dispised him, as did his teammates…….

  87. haiku-man

Wow Philly came out swinging 4-0 after 1

  88. Wait till the ALCS

  89. JZ

OMG, Dodger is a much worse team. If they didn’t get the game 2 for free, they will be swept.

    They suck

  90. Wait till the ALCS

Pat M.-So you’re trying to tell me that CC Sabathia is as bad or worse than a 39 year old broken down Kevin Brown? I don’t care what CC or Kevin Brown say about it, what I care about is that he’s been awesome this year and I trust him in a big spot more than any pitcher on that 04′ staff.

  91. m

I think the Yankees would be fine with Chad Gaudin starting Game 4. But if the Yankees think that CC on short rest is the best way to go, who am I to argue?

Sidebar: there’s no way that Lee is going to lose this game for the Phillies.

  92. Betsy

GB, don’t you mean 2 Meeting Street, the wedding cake house? There is a B&B called the Meeting Street in which isn’t the same.

Joe, I stay (and am staying again) at the Governor’s House inn – it was built in the 1700’s and is just beautiful. They serve a wonderful homemade breakfast and the staff is so friendly. GB has given good advise – Patriot’s Point is the name of site where the Yorkown is moored. Ft.Sumpter is a must – I know some folks are disappointed in it because there is not much left, but that is the point. For me, as a Civil War buff, it’s spectacular and moving. You have to make plans to see the Hunley – the Confederate submarine discovered in Charleston Harbor a few years back. They are in the process of restoring it and there are guided tours on weekends.

The Battery, the Waterfront, historic homes, plantations – whatever you want, Charleston has it. King Street is a fantastic place for shopping (and I don’t love to shop, to put it mildly)….. I would do a walking tour or two – there are all sorts, from Civil War tours, to ghosts, to pirates, to whatever you want. Oh, if you have a car, I would also go to Ft. Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island, just about 20 minutes away (more or less). The Fort was in use from the Revolutionary War through WWII . Then, go to Poe’s Tavern a few minutes away. It is dedicated to Edgar Allan Poe, who was stationed on Sullivan’s Island for a short time….and they have great burgers.

  93. mick

Look it is a no-brainer. CC is hungry. Joe G is hungry. Torre was hungry in the beginning but lost it. He sleepwalked through the later years and admitted it when he left them on the field with the midges. It’s only natural Joe G. is possessed to win this thing and by sending CC he is showing just that.

  94. Wait till the ALCS

I don’t think L.A. is MUCH worse. What I do think is that their bats are much colder.

  95. Wait till the ALCS

This is the reason Philly scares me, the prospect of facing Cliff Lee three times.

I know we have CC tbut I’d still rather face a team with Kershaw as its Ace.

  96. mick

MIlwaukee rode CC into the ground last year. What did he go,3 or 4 times on 3 days rest? This is a walk in the park for him.

  97. haiku-man

Joe’s pitcher(kuroda) has already given up 5 runs has only thrown 39 pitches and out of the game after 1.1 innings wow!!

  98. mick

    They have faced Lee before.

What pitcher has owned us this year?

The circular lineup will wear you out. Philly has no bullpen.

  99. Betsy

I can’t argue with your points about CC, but I don’t like anyone going on 3 days rest…..and if he loses, which is certainly possible, we’ve lost our best pitcher. Calling it foolish was an overstatment, though…….I admit that.

  100. 27

Man, this Game must remind Torre of the Kevin Brown/Jaret Wright/Shawn Chacon days.

  101. GreenBeret7

The fact that the 2004 Yankees got as far as they did was somewhat remarkable. Not many teams could completely rebuild a rotation from a WS team one year to a possible WS team the next as the Yankees did and get that far. Mussina was pretty much the only returning starter, unless you count Contreras.

  102. Benny Blanco

    Phillies have a serious lineup.

  103. Wait till the ALCS

The only lineup better than Philly’s is ours.

  104. YankeeJosh

Torre made a lot of mistakes in 2004 but lining up the starters wasn’t one of them. The Red Sox that year were deeper than the Yankees. When game 3 got rained out, Yanks and Sox had to play 5 straight games, 2 of which went into deep extra innings. Yanks pitching was shot by the end. Torre had Moose pitch game 5 and Lieber game 6. He went for the jugular but didn’t get it done. That left the Yankees with nobody to start game 7. At the time I thought he should have started El Duque on 2 days rest, as he seemed to be the best option.

A lot went wrong in 2004, and the Yankees pitching was significantly weaker than it hd been 1996-2003, but that wasn’t where Torre erred.

  105. Pat M.

Wait …. Of course not, there’s no comparison between CC & Brown….My point was in rebuttal to Jeremy saying that Torre was washed up and should have been replaced after the 04 debacle….The point I was trying to convey was that the Yanks had zip for pitching and the bullpen was a revolving door of crap…..They were fortunate to get to a Game 7 with Boston in 2004 with a rotation that was garbage, a bullpen of Tom Gordon & Mariano that carried them as far as they could before their arms went south…..Had they been able to sweep Boston in 04, they would have had time to rest and may have been able to take out The Cardinal in the Series……

    ————————————————————

Yes, #2 Meeting Street Inn. Fantastic rooms. I have a friend, who’s a Warrent Officer that was on the dive team that located the Hunley. He’s quite a character, and goes on a lot of Civil War dig sites. He said that was his greatest experience….his wife didn’t think much of that. She thought that she should have been his greatest experience. It got a lot of laughs, watching him trying to explain that she was but….but….but….

  107. Zach in Port Jeff

The Phillies are a quintessential AL team that is stuck in the NL.

  108. vin

Having CC potentially start 43% of the ALCS games is a nice advantage. Especially considering AJ and Andy are the other 2 starters.

In theory, the Yanks could win the WS and only throw their #4 starter once – while having CC go on short rest only once.

Every other team in the postseason has already used their #4 guy. The schedule definitely favors this Yanks team. Everything seems to have fallen in place.

  109. Wait till the ALCS

    Okay, Pat.

That fact that the Yankees won more games in Boston is a miracle, considering that they had both a worse lineup and a worse pitching staff, and neither by insignificant margins either.

  110. Betsy

I’m not jumping ahead – I still forsee a dogfight in the ALCS. The Angels are a very good team and they are going home. I’m confident the Yanks will win the series, but it’s not a foregone conclusion.

I always respect whomever the Yankees face, so I will not bother rooting for the Dodgers/Phils. Let’s just say that the Phillies lineup scares me to pieces – they did some major damage to our pitching earlier this years. Plus, Cliff Lee was very tough on the Yankees this year

  111. Jeremy

I’m telling you right now. You want CC pitching Game 4. Betsy, if you think that is a wrong move then you need to review the videos from the 2004 ALCS. You have to finish a team like the Angels off. Don’t give the a chance to come back in a series if you have them down 3-0.

  112. Jeremy

The Phillies did damage to our pitching when our pitching was bad. If they faced us in the World Series I think the results would be much different.

  113. haiku-man

Give me a on fire Ace like CC,IN FRONT OF HIS HOME TOWN PEEPS,any day.
He always lost in Oakland, bought a boatload of seats for family and friends Oakland when the Yankees played them, and won the game.He conquered the Oakland stadium. So bring on LA!!

    6-0 Philly after 2,Dodger pitching awful~

  114. Sun Devil

The dodgers benefit immensely from playing in a pathetic division. They’d be a 4th place team in the NL East.

Anyone think the Yanks would be on the verge of a 27th Championship if Torre was still managing the team?

  115. GreenBeret7

As good as Sabathia is, I’m not crazy about having a starting pitcher face the same team 2 times in a week or a team 3 times in 10 days. That’s a rough assignment for any pitcher, especially against a quality team like the Angels.

  116. Joe from Long Island

GB7 and Betsy – Thank you very much for the advice. I have been interested in Civil War history since my childhood, and good food always goes well.

Ah yes, the good old days of Kevin Brown, Jose Contreras, Javier Vasquez….And to think that we can get so worked up over AJ. AJ would have been the reliable one in that bunch.

  117. Betsy

GB, that #2 Meeting Street is spectacular, but I’ve never stayed there, so I haven’t seen the rooms. It may be my favorite home in Charleston…..and it has a neat story attached to it.

I’m sorry for the wife, but I have to agree with your friend that his discovery of the Hunley would be tops. When I went down there, the crew hadn’t yet been buried and they had guards in Confederate uniforms standing at attention 24 hours a day. I ran into a couple of extras outside the building and one of them kissed my hand – I felt like a real lady, lol. I admitted that I love the song “Dixie”, even though I was a da** Yankee……Charlestonians are so friendly – their rep is well deserved.

  118. Betsy

Jeremy, the Yankees have not won game 3 yet.

  119. Jeremy

    Pat M.
I didn’t say that Torre deserved all of the blame for 2004. But he was a main person responsible for the collapse. If you go back to that series you could see that he made a lot of stupid choices. It was time for him to go.

  120. Abdababdaserser

Seems the Phillies are putting their feet on the throats of the Dodgers.

I am hoping that the Yankees can put the series to an end in Anaheim. That will let them have time to set up the rotation and have a mental break. It would be nice if the Angels cooperate.

  121. m

I get that CC is the ace and pitching great, but I don’t get the “Especially considering AJ and Andy are the other 2 starters.” that I’ve seen (from others, too). I mean, AJ and Andy helped us get to 103 wins, too. And they’ve kept the postseason bats quiet for the most part.

AJ and Andy aren’t Gaudin and Mitre.

  122. Betsy

Joe, then Charleston is just for you…..I hope you have the chance to go.

  123. Joe from Long Island

GB – I understand your point about CC facing the Angels 2-3 times within a week or so. The thing is, he is so dominating, and his stuff so good, that if he has his command the hitter has no chance. Look at Mariano – everyone knows what’s coming, and they still can’t hit it.

  124. Jeremy

    Betsy
It doesn’t matter if we win Game 3 or not. You throw out your best and don’t mess around. This is still a dangerous Angels team, so you go for the sweep by throwing your best at them.

  125. m

    vin,

oops. you didn’t mean it that way, did you? just think that this team is good all around.

    never mind.

  126. YankeeJosh

    Pat M,

If Orlando Hernandez doesn’t get hurt in September in 2004 the Yankees beat Boston. If there’s no rainout, Yanks beat Boston. If the LCS in 2004 was designed with extra off-days like this years, Yankees win.

The Sox were a much deeper team, but luck also turned against the Yankees in 2004. Heck, if Torre goes to Rivera to start the 8th in game 5, I am convinced the Yankees win that series. Despite their flaws, the Yankees should have won the 2004 ALCS.

  127. Jeremy

    GreenBeret7
It doesn’t matter how many times CC faces the Angels. If he makes his pitches it’s game over. If he doesn’t then he will run into trouble.

  128. vin

“They’d be a 4th place team in the NL East.”

No way. They are a very good team. Unfortunately for them, their #1 starter missed time with an injury and hasn’t been the same since (the guy who is in now – Billingsly). They have a very deep lineup – good bench and good bullpen.

“Anyone think the Yanks would be on the verge of a 27th Championship if Torre was still managing the team?”

Probably. I was in favor of getting rid of Torre at the time. But he is still a quality manager. His biggest detriment is that he rides his bullpen too hard, but its hard to criticize a guy who is trying to win every game.

  130. NumberOnePositivePosterInTheUniverse

Betsy – You are so knowledgeable when it comes to starters, I definitely trust your judgment on the matter more than anyone else – including the people that get “paid” to make these decisions, if anyone should be paid it’s YOU.

I think you made a good point in one of your post’s, you said that if you lose the game that he pitches, not only do you lose the game but you lose CC too. I thought that was a great point, people forget (though not you) that if he goes on normal rest and loses that game then you do not lose CC if he goes on normal rest. Actually, you lose him in that scenario too, doesn’t matter, I was just trying to make a point and end up not making any point.

I just don’t have your skills, Betsy.

  131. m

Torre would’ve done well with this team. How could he not?

But times have changed. The AL is a beast nowadays. You have to be prepared for everything, and be able to react in an instant.

I like how Girardi’s prepared his team. I also like how he’s a little more aggressive than Torre, yet not recklessly so. Sometimes you have to force the action and be proactive. I see a lot of that in the players now. They’re not just waiting for the game to come to them, they’re going out and taking the game.

  132. vin

    m,

Yeah I meant AJ and Andy being the other starters is a very good thing. Makes it that much tougher on the opponent.

How are our boys in purple and gold going to do this year? I’ve been too focused on the playoffs to watch any preseason basketball, but it should provide a nice sports outlet during the offseason.

How ironic that that song is hated by many of the blacks because of it’s southern history. In fact, the song was written by a man from Ohio when he was in a NY City hotel rom in 1859. He said that he learned a song close to that from a free black man and that it was part of an old negro spiritual.

  134. m

    vin,

Haven’t been paying attention at all. This is just too intense. :)

  135. Jeremy

How do you lose CC ? He would still be ready if there was a Game 7 situation. Which I highly doubt will happen.

  136. Betsy

GB, I didn’t know that- how interesting. I wonder if I should feel guilty? It’s not even the lyrics – the tune is just so incredibly catchy. LOL……However, I also love Battle Hymn of the Republic (I think that’s the Glory, Glory, Halleluljah song), so I guess I’m ok.

  137. vin

“Haven’t been paying attention at all. This is just too intense. ”

Thats why we have November, I guess.

  138. Pat M.

Wait & Jeremy…..When Boston inked Schilling to go with Pedro & the Yanks lost Andy & Roger it was over…..Remember of not for Grady Little’s screw up & then Aaron Boone’s walkoff the Yanks go home…..2003 was the last real Harah for the Yanks, and Wells goes down and out and the Series was over……The rainout in 04 much like the rainout in 06 ( Detroit ) were daggers to the Yanks and their very tin rotation….

  139. Joba in the pen

Girardi is going with CC, AJ and Andy because he doesn’t trust Joba and Gaudin. He feels his 3 pitchers are his best chance to win. And if Torre in ‘04 had these 3 pitchers, he probably would do the same thing.

I’m just looking at the difficulty in beating a team 3 times in 10 days. It’s hard to do. Ford never did it. Walter Johnson didn’t. Bob Gibson did. Strangely a couple of pretty decent pitchers, but, hardly legendary, did. Lou Burdette and Mickey Lolich did. There are a few others, but, it’s an extremely difficult thing to do. If the Yanks aren’t hitting well, it gets harder.

It’s just a good whistling tune and it goes well for marching and riding a horse, too. That’s why the US Cavelry adapted “Gary Owen” as their song in the mid-1870s. It went well on a horse.

I think Pete did a great job setting up this blog, and especially getting people interested and involved with the insider updates that beat writers get but don’t often report due to space and time restrictions.

I think Chad, Sam, and Josh are following up on his model quite well, and are doing as good if not a better job. Three people getting news to us is better than one.

Pete is a die hard Sox fan. He can name every Sox lineup from 74 on. If that’s not diehard, I don’t know what is.

For him to start this blog, and maintain his professionalism during it, especially during a lot of the abuse the Sox trolls took, was quite impressive. Peter Gammons is his role model, and Gammons maintained his professionalism until 2004, when he just couldn’t lie to himself anymore during the Sox miracle. I think the Boston gig was Pete’s dream, and he had to take it then, and so be it. Good luck.

However, Pete’s professionalism did waver whenever Clemens and ARod were discussed–not surprising given how intense a Sox fan he really is, and how intensely most Boston fans despise the two of them.

Now that he’s officially on the “other” side, Yankee fans can abuse him all they want as a biased homer, just like we do Peter Gammons. This includes posting on his blog (which is open to everyone) little tidbits that must irritate him, like ARod’s postseason success.

To those who feel that this blog was just about Pete’s updates, and just read the updates and comments, that’s OK. Simply read the comments and don’t post if you don’t feel like it. Many do.

On the other hand, I think that the strength of this blog is both the insider beat information that many of us can get, as well as the discussion that ensues. Why else would the game posts get over 1500 comments?

  147. Shirley

CC has been great, but I don’t feel comfortable that he pitches Game 4 on short rest. After all, beating the Angles is not the end of the playoffs. Well, I am just worried if CC overworks, he won’t be that good.

  148. Paul C

I wonder how cold it is in Philly?

Talk about Deja Vu Torre has a Manny batting clean up,when he’s not really hitting too much.Reminds me of 2006 when he put Alex 8th in the line up.I bet he’s thought about it for Manny, but he won’t make that mistake again!!

  149. Shirley

Pete is a diehard Sox fan? Interesting. If he is, then he was quite professional in this blog. I did not see any Pete’s hostility to the Yankees except that sometimes he was somewhat harsh on A-rod.

  150. haiku-man

Is this the same Dodgers that swept the Cardinals #1 and 2 ACE pitchers that are up for the CY?

Cliff Lee is like Gaudin in this One fact,he’s economical with his pitches.Of course Gaudin isn’t an ACE,by the way.

Hey guys, question: considering the scheduled World Series dates, does anyone know what day the ticker-tape parade would be if the Yanks are in it and win it?
