Yankee Stadium to open for Game 3

Chad Jennings
October

Press release from the Yankees…

The New York Yankees announced today that they will open the Stadium Field Level and Great Hall to the public to watch the broadcast of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) Game 3 from Anaheim on Monday, October 19. The decision to open the Stadium was made after consultation with Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr.

Turnstiles between Gates 4 and 6 will open at 3:30 p.m. for the 4:13 p.m. Game. Fans can watch the Game in the Great Hall or in the opened sections of the Field Level.

“We wanted to provide a place for our fans to come together to cheer for our team even if the game itself is taking place across the country,” said Hal Steinbrenner, Yankees Managing General Partner. “This is a way of saying thank you for their continued support.”

“I thank the New York Yankees for opening their amazing new Stadium to the community, and I hope that people from all over the city will come out to cheer for the Yankees and share in what’s sure to be a great night right here in The Bronx,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.

Food and concession stands will be open and available to fans. NYY Steak and Hard Rock Cafe will also be open.

    I wish I could go!

    re-post:

Fellow Yankee fans, I am not much for superstition, but sometimes you can’t deny the omens in front of you.

Last night I saw one of my favorite indie bands, Yo La Tengo, play a great show down in Santa Cruz. Noticing the number on my ticket, it was impossible not to draw a powerful and happy conclusion:

  4. Mikey MD

A cynic yould look at this and think “Welcome fans, please bring your hunger and your thirst, we need to make-up for all the lost revenue from the unsold seats”

But I think it’s cool they did this.. Wish I could go.

  5. Abdababdaserser

I think this is a great idea. That big screen tv in center field would be great to watch it on, and being in the stadium with other fans watching it would be a blast.

Too bad I’m so far away or I would be there.

  6. Abdababdaserser

I don’t have a problem with the Yankees making some money selling concessions for this. The energy bill will probably be about even with what they take it. Its smart business to give a big venue like this for the fans. Not charging to get in and then paying for a few brews seems like a good deal to me.

  7. RS

I think this is a great idea. I always feel like a win feels more enjoyable and a loss feels less painful when you’re surrounded by fellow Yankees fans. And that gigantic screen should be great to watch a game on. I remember Mike Francesa marveling about it when they had the Phillies/Dodgers game showing on the big screen during one of the Yankees workouts.

  8. Rishi

“The Yankees’ payroll this season is approximately $206.8 million, nearly $68 million higher than that of any other club, but even the Yankees have players, like Coke (salary: $403,000), who don’t make nearly enough to fly first class, or to build the biggest house in Tampa, or to spend their off-days in South Beach with Hollywood ingénues. Eleven players on the Yankees’ 25-man ALCS roster earn $2 million a year or less, and eight earn less than $500,000. On a brisk, rainy and seemingly endless Saturday night in the Bronx, those players were the ones who ultimately won Game 2 of the Yankees’ ALCS against the Angels after five hours and 10 minutes of play, and who sent them west with a commanding 2-0 series lead.”

sounds like a great party, and a fine cash cow for the owners.

  10. E-gawa

Will they be lowering the price of that $11 beer?

  11. Doreen

You know, you’re not obligated to buy anything once you get there. You can eat first or eat after. Or you can limit what you buy. It’s not a crime to make money. But no one’s making you buy anything.

  12. Nick in SF

The price of beer will be lowered to $9.98 and the price of hot chocolate will be $27.

  13. Vrsce

    Nick in SF

Your ticket is 27th of 999, therby indicating (if your omen is correct) a few more titles after 27.

  14. kelvin

Is it completely free? I can just enter and watch??

  15. Abdababdaserser

Kelvin, yes, unless you buy concessions it costs you only to get there. Not a bad deal at all.

  16. GMAN

Pete Abe will not be in attendence.

Globe has him covering the NLCS now…

Apparently, the Yankee fans are putting on a beat down at the Boston Globe Blog… Taking a toll on the powers that be…so another writer has the ALCS beat while the series moves to West Coast.

Pete might have some good insights on sen-sei Mr. Torre!

  17. Kevin

Too bad Pete wasn’t forced to cover the Yankee series. I would love to here is mea culpa for all the AROD bashing he’s done.

  18. Kevin

    ================
Or it could just be that Nick Cafardo was already out on the West Coast, so it made for sense for him to cover the ALCS…you know, since he’s already out there.

    Yeah, i think thats it.

Jeez, the Pete hate/obsession is kinda disturbing.

  20. m

Pete doesn’t care, his Patriots have popped 45 points in the first half.

Of course my CBS affiliate used its discretion to air the Buffalo/Jets game.

  21. RS

Did anyone see the news about how Matt Holliday’s top 2 choices to sign with are the Yankees and Mets? Pretty interesting…money is obviously a huge priority for him.

  22. Nick in SF

Mo might be the only current Yankee to still be around for #999.

  23. Zach in Port Jeff

I’m trying to work in a good Angel Berroa joke here, but I got nothing…

Nick, anyone else from Matador play with YLT?

  24. crawdaddy

“Jeez, the Pete hate/obsession is kinda disturbing.”

    It’s pretty sad!

  25. Betsy

That’s a great thing for the Yankees to do – very fan friendly.

  26. Patrick

This is a win-win for the yanks. They get extra concessions money and the fans get to enjoy watching the game in a great atmosphere.

I might have to go dependinng on the weather

  27. Nick in SF

Zach, the opener was a band called Endless Boogie, but I missed them completely, I stuck with watching the Yankees as long as possible.

  28. Trevor

Weather will be good tomorrow. Sunny and 55 with little wind.

  29. Ken

Folks I repeat : can we get through one thread without mentioning Pete ? Why are so many people obsessed with what he does ?? Hes a damn writer! Hes not playing for the Red Sox ! Geez this is making us look real small.

  30. Rich in NJ

No way I’d go, but it’s a great gesture.

  31. m

Joba has a chance to be there for #999. He’s only 23. Or is he 24 now?

  32. Zach in Port Jeff

Pete may not play for the Red Sox, but its more than likely that he will be playing for the “other side” during the annual beat-writers game next year…in which case…someone may have to brush him off the plate…something high and inside.

i’m looking at you Sam and Chad.

we here at LoHud prefer to do our talking on the field.

    ————-
Sweeney had a good one last night

“Garry Matthews Sr and Jerry Hairston Sr both played in LCS in 1983. The Jrs playing in this years LCS. And Angel Berroa played in both!”

As for the Pete comments, some of you lack common sense.

Dodgers ALCS game 1 and 2 in LA
    Yankees games 3-4-5 in LA

You keep the same writer in LA and have another one cover the games in Philly and NY, which are about 2 hours apart.

Is it really that hard to understand?

  34. GMAN

    Zach in Port Jeff,

I happen to be a huge fan of Pete Abe and followed his LoHud blog from inception.

He is undeservedly getting a nestful at Boston.com

I do not believe any quality media organization would switch-out AL beat writer that know Yanks like back of his IPhone in mid Championship Series coverage…

No way… that happens for price of roundtrip planefare.

Unfortunately Pete’s blog was just being over-run by people with an axe against Abe.

Ok to bust on Boston…but Pete Abe provided us with awesome coverage of the Yanks and should not be getting beat on at his new digs.

Pete savvy on Yanks and AL…not NL. Period.

Thanks, Nick in SF. Shoulda known we could count on you for the proper perspective! :)

  36. Kevin

How do we know its free admission or not, it doesn’t say anything!

  37. m

Pete’s a good guy. There’s just some people who are disappointed that he hasn’t moved on.

  38. AllStrZG

How do we know this is free? It doesn’t say anything.

  39. daled

    I concur GMAN
but you gotta love the irony of leaving the Yankees at the end of this very special season.
And speaking of Axes, How bout that Underdog?
That’s about the only beef I ever had with the BlogFather and man back then the old A-Rod was a pain sometimes
    RISHI
man I would love to “struggle” on $403,000 while doing something I love for six months a year.

  40. Rishi

I will say that the tenor of pete’s Yankee-related tweets is pretty cranky and when you point out something that is incorrect, he just deletes the tweet…

example: last night he tweeted wondering what Melky had done to deserve the pie – when people pointed out that Hairston got the pie the tweet was gone.

he was also down on the fans/yankees (?) for not selling out the games, when they were, in fact sold out. He tweeted the correction at about 2 am

Food and concession stands will be open and available to fans. NYY Steak and Hard Rock Cafe will also be open.
    —————————————————–

Of course they will be. Which is ultimately why they’re doing it.

  44. m

People acting like this is the first pro team to open up their facilities for an away game of a championship series.

If it offends your sensibilities so much, channel your energy into something positive like volunteering at the soup kitchen or spearheading a clothing drive?

  45. pauly

“People acting like this is the first pro team to open up their facilities for an away game of a championship series”
    ____________________________________________

Don’t have a problem with it and it doesn’t offend me. Thank you. But I’m not buying this phony line by Hal: “This is a way of saying thank you for their continued support”

Correction: This is our way of making money.

  46. Vrsce

Correction: This is our way of making money.
    000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

To help pay for the $206million payroll. Or are you just a nasty cynic Pauly (Shore?).

  47. Doreen

One does not preclude the other – you can appreciate your fans and still be in a position to make money. NO ONE IS FORCING ANYONE TO BUY ANYTHING AT THE STADIUM. ADMISSION IS FREE.

  48. Doreen

Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if they LOST money on the deal – the cost of the electricity and security alone.

  49. Doreen

And, before anyone calls me naive, I’d rather be naive, thinking the best of people and situations, and HAPPY, than cynical, thinking the worst of situations and people and MISERABLE.

  50. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Montero Fanaticus Primus

I plan on going tomorrow–if you’re going and want to meet up, shoot me an email!

  51. willis

PittsburghYankeeFan you are right on the money.. Plus now when don’t have to read how Bruce=god

  52. m

Well, in no way, shape, or form, have those words ever been released or uttered by any pro franchise.

We all know the deal and most of us are okay with it.

  53. Doreen

Rebecca, I am so trying to think of a way to keep my daughter out of school and make the trek, but it’s a no-go. I’m so bummed. It’s going to be so much fun.

Have great time! You are quite lucky to be in such proximity to the Stadium this season!

  54. Tom

“”And, before anyone calls me naive, I’d rather be naive, thinking the best of people and situations, and HAPPY, than cynical, thinking the worst of situations and people and MISERABLE”"

No one really cares. Go make your cookies.

  55. Fa Fa Fo Hi

Peter A’s favorite baseball team was the Atlanta Braves.

  56. Jeremy

Everyone in the media keeps on apologizing for the Angels play. Cold weather is not the reason why the Angels lost. It was because of the Yankees playing better than the Angels.

  57. Doreen

Tom, did I hit a nerve. So sorry.

  58. Joe from Long Island

Doreen – There’s no stopping someone who wants to be miserable.

I’ll be watching from home, it’s just too much of a schlep for me.

  59. Doreen

    Joe from LI -

    Yeah, I know. (sigh)

I’ll watch from home too. Not only would it be too much of a schlep, but I have out-of-town guests returning from a visit to the city tomorrow and my mom & dad coming in the next day. Too, too busy to even contemplate. Man, it would have been fun.

    I keep thinking I’m 20.

  60. YankeeFan

    Is it free entry???

  61. Ed H. (Winner of Guess the Postseason Roster!)

“This blog is one of the best baseball sites around, and he deserves credit for it. Leaving it right as the postseason started (he couldn’t negotiate a few weeks more with the Globe?) has made more than a few of us scratch our heads.”

    —————————————-
I think that Pete left when he did because of business reasons. Think about it. If Pete waited till after the postseason to move to the Globe, there would have been little intertest from which to build his new blog audience. The Globe editors were banking on the Sox getting deep into the postseason to enable Pete to engage with his new audience. Didn’t happen. The Sox were three and done. The Globe editors, I’m pretty sure, insisted upon Pete starting his new gig when he did. We shouldn’t blame Pete.

As for how everyone is dealing with Pete’s being gone, I think that it’s a classic human reaction of how people cope with loss. Aesop nailed it in his fable about the fox and the grapes. Can’t get the grapes? Console yourself by declaring that they were sour anyway. Pete was the BlogFather. Big loss. Sour grapes.

  62. youngtimer

Wait the Yankees are doing this for FREE?

hahahaha. Of course we’re cynical, we’re NYers. BUT it is cool that they’re opening the Stadium for free. If I was there, I’d play hookey and enjoy it.

  63. YankeeFan

i cant believe its for free and no ticket needed, its probably a mail in rebate thing, lol

  64. GMAN

Pete was purposely controversial as controversy drives internet traffic.

Clemens and Alex = easy pickins…that drove posts on the blog.

He mixed solid reporting of events as they unfolded…with sensationalism (Alex and Clemens) during slow periods.

I’d say Pete is attempting to build a Boston base at the Boston Blog…by sniping at Yanks…

I also bet once he’s established…he will beat on Ortiz and Veritek and any other member of the Sawks as they slide to oblivion…because it brings eyeballs to the blog.

It’s kind of what journalism is all about…

  65. Chad D

I can’t wait to get up there! Just hope half of NYC doesn’t show up and overwhelm the place!

I went to a Rangers game in Bryant Park before, not too many people showed up, maybe because the Flyers killed them!!

  66. Patrick Bateman

While Peter was very good at posting breaking news, he was lacking in many other areas.

His analysis was mediocre at best as was his writing quality. He was an extremely biased writer due to his roots as a Boston fan. Boston fans always respect Jeter, but hate ARod because he was the fish that got away. Evidence of this can be seen in the first blog entry Peter made on Boston.com, sniping away at his favorite player, Alex Rodriguez.

He was also extremely unprofessional in his handling of conflicting comments and posts on this board. For example, I posted that Ian O’Connor was a poor writer after Peter posted one of his “columns” here. Peter insulted me, then deleted my post. A childish action, especially from someone who works in the media who’s entire profession is based on free speech.

To be quite honest, this blog hasn’t missed a beat since Peter went off to Bean Town. I personally prefer the work of Sam, Chad, and Josh. If anything, I’d say the change has benefited the site since its not just the opinions of one Red Sox fan.

  67. Letty

HERE’S THE RUB! THE YANKEES COULD HAVE WON THIS ONE EXCEPT FOR THE STRATEGY MY MIKE SOCCIA BEHIND THE PLATE. WITH 1 STRIKE ON POSADA, THE 1ST BASE RUNNER GOES AND LO! A PITCH-OUT. THE NEXT THING – POSADA HITS A HOMER TO TIE THE GAME INSTEAD OF GIVING THE YANKEES A 1-RUN LEAD. IN THE 9TH, THE YANKEES RETIRED THE A’S. HAD THAT PLAY NOT OCCURED, THE GAME WOULD HAVE ENDED IN A WIN FOR THE YANKEES. I HATE TO ADMIT IT, BUT IT WAS GOOD STRATEGY ON THE PART OF THE ANGEL MANAGER AND I’M SURE THAT THE BOSTON RED SOX FANS WERE LICKING THEIR CHOPS! YANKEES – BEWARE THAT PLAY THE NEXT TIME AROUND!

  68. Sole Controler

Does anyone know if Yankee Stadium will be open tonight for game 5?
