ALCS Game 3: Yankees at Angels (Part II)

Posted by: Sam Borden - Posted in Misc on Oct 19, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

UPDATE, 5:55 p.m.: We’re halfway through and it’s already time for a second thread. Yankees up 3-0.

UPDATE, 6:02 p.m.: So much for the Yankees not allowing a home run this postseason. Solo shot by Kendrick makes it 3-1.

UPDATE, 6:05 p.m.: That’s it for Weaver. Darren Oliver coming in to pitch for the Angels.

UPDATE, 6:11 p.m.: Random fact: Darren Oliver’s last postseason appearance against the Yankees before this series? For the Texas Rangers in the 1996 ALDS (as a starter!).

UPDATE, 6:15 p.m.: Ugly, ugly swing from Swisher on strike three. He’s 3-for-21 this postseason. Meanwhile, Melky nearly assassinated Chone Figgins with that bat shard. Nice job by Figgins hanging on to the ball and not getting impaled.

UPDATE, 6:24 p.m.: That base hit by Abreu snapped an 0-for-11 this series. Also, Joba Chamberlain is getting loose in the Yankees bullpen.

UPDATE, 6:30 p.m.: Monster shot from Vlad and suddenly it’s 3-3. He absolutely crushed it to deep left.

UPDATE, 6:32 p.m.: Looked like Pettitte got way too much of the plate to Guerrero, who generally will swing at anything that’s in his zip code. Vlad is waking up – he was 2-for-11 in the first two games but is 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBI today.

UPDATE, 6:39 p.m.: Nice work by Texieira to work a walk there, getting A-Rod to the plate with a man on. Scioscia is going to Kevin Jepsen – who throws near 100 mph – to try and get Rodriguez.

UPDATE, 6:44 p.m.: Not this time for A-Rod. Fielder’s choice to third and it’s stretch time. Yankees have seven LOB today.

UPDATE, 6:51 p.m.: That’s it for Andy, as Joba comes in to face Kendrick. Meanwhile, they just showed the Rally Monkey in a clip from “Pirates of the Caribbean” on the big screen. The place is going nuts.

UPDATE, 6:54 p.m.: That didn’t take long — Kendrick absolutely smokes one off the right-field wall and doesn’t ever slow up, sliding into third with a triple. Swisher tried to climb the wall and get it but couldn’t. Yanks have the infield in as Izturis bats for Napoli.

UPDATE, 6:56 p.m.: Izturis gets the job done. Crushes a fly ball to right that Swisher catches by the warning track. Nothing he can do as Kendrick walks home with the go-ahead run. 4-3 Angels.

UPDATE, 6:58 p.m.: Joba is getting roped around pretty good. Three straight hard-hit balls, this one down the line into the RF corner for a double. Now Figgins up. This place got very loud, very quick.

UPDATE, 6:59 p.m.: Marte coming in to face Figgins. Rally Monkey now in the “Psycho” shower scene on the big screen. Hilarious.

UPDATE, 7:02 p.m.: Here we go. Chad tells me Figgins is 0-for-6 against Marte lifetime.

UPDATE, 7:03 p.m.: Make that 0-for-7. Now Yankees have to rally against Jepsen.

UPDATE, 7:07 p.m.: Leadoff walk for Matsui and Gardner hops off the bench to pinch-run.

UPDATE, 7:10 p.m.: This is one of those good news/bad news situations: Posada just hit a game-tying homer to dead center but it came seconds after Gardner was caught stealing. Instead of being up a run, they’re tied at 4. I think they’ll take it.

UPDATE, 7:18 p.m.: After a single and walk, Cabrera continues to be brutal. Now it’s up to Jeter to try and break the tie.

UPDATE, 7:20 p.m.: Jeter on the back foot and taps back to the mound. It’s 4-4 going to the bottom of the eighth and Coke is coming in. What a game.

UPDATE, 7:23 p.m.: Not quite sure why Girardi is going with Coke to replace Marte. One lefty for another? Seems like a waste. It’s not match-up, either: Abreu was 0-for-3 against Marte, Chad says.

UPDATE, 7:25 p.m.: That is an absolutely brutal mistake by Abreu. Terrible. In truth, he had a better shot at being safe at third than he did going back to second. Great play Teixeira to get to the bag for the tag. Huge break for the Yankees.

UPDATE, 7:32 p.m.: We head to the ninth and to a third thread. Come on over.

3-0 is nice. 5-0 sounds nicer

  10. Laura - Don't call him A-Rod. His new nickname is "Alex the late"! October 19th, 2009 at 5:59 pm

The ball that Alex just hit wasn’t on the good part of the bat. If it had been just a few inches further towards the head of the bat, it would have been gone.

Hopefully Andy can have an easy inning. As we have seen with the Angels the 5th inning is where they have gotten their run.

Hey everyone! Former Yankee here! Do you remember me?

NYY626 – I forgot to tell you, I am wearing my Pettitte jersey for us both. :)

  22. Abdababdaserser October 19th, 2009 at 6:00 pm

Weaver is at 95 pitches and is done. Pettitte should be able to get 6 more outs if he keeps dealing like he has.

It would be nice if the Yankees could score some runs on other than the HR. Maybe with the relief pitchers coming in they can tack on some more, while holding down the Angels.

  23. JMere October 19th, 2009 at 6:01 pm

We need to add another 3-4 runs on…neither the game nor the series is over…

Crap. Andy gives up a bomb.

  29. Trevor October 19th, 2009 at 6:01 pm

    Damn Pettitte.

  39. CK in LA October 19th, 2009 at 6:02 pm

Way too many outs left …. we can’t keep leaving Matsui on third.

  40. Scared of the Wall October 19th, 2009 at 6:03 pm

I hate how some stadiums have fireworks after a homerun… save that for when you win the World Series…

  41. Abdababdaserser October 19th, 2009 at 6:03 pm

He seems to be a killer to Yankees.

  45. The Ghost October 19th, 2009 at 6:03 pm

Kendrick is a bonafide Yankee killer, we traded that error by Izturis for Kendrick for the rest of the way.

  46. 100 pitches of fun... October 19th, 2009 at 6:03 pm

Kendrick is such an easy out. Anything in on his hands but that was a terrible placed meatball.

  47. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing October 19th, 2009 at 6:03 pm

Meh, just one run – as long as he holds it at that, not a huge deal. I dont think the Yankees are done scoring today either.

  48. Bronx Jeers October 19th, 2009 at 6:03 pm

McCarver still on the whole MPH thing?

    Great … one more time.

  51. JF October 19th, 2009 at 6:03 pm

one more out. next inning im sure he will be on a short leash with joba waiting in the wings…

  52. Abdababdaserser October 19th, 2009 at 6:03 pm

    Get out the Crypt Keeper.

  53. JasonR October 19th, 2009 at 6:03 pm

McCarver is talking about the FoxTrax radar like he invented it.

  54. Triple Short Of A Cycle October 19th, 2009 at 6:03 pm

Please Kendrick might have good numbers in limited at bats against the Yanks but his name does not scream Edgar Martinez to me

  55. stacey October 19th, 2009 at 6:04 pm

yanks need to at the angels..la isnt gonna go quietly

  56. Vader October 19th, 2009 at 6:04 pm

  57. Carl October 19th, 2009 at 6:04 pm

Nice work Andy. Just a solo shot.

  58. Abdababdaserser October 19th, 2009 at 6:05 pm

Kendrick seems to see the Yankee pitchers pretty well. Crypt Keeper gone though so only 1 run.

  59. DYNASTY IS DESTINY! October 19th, 2009 at 6:05 pm

  67. GreenBeret7 October 19th, 2009 at 6:06 pm

OH MY GOD!!!! Pettitte’s losing it. He gave up a run and another hard hit ball to Aybar. Pull him before he blows another game. NYY can’t possibly win now. The Angels have all of the momentum and the umpires stink.

  68. Pov October 19th, 2009 at 6:06 pm

You want to get that run back right away. This is the comeback team they always think they chip away and get back in it.

  69. Mark-Cant Touch This October 19th, 2009 at 6:06 pm

Maybe the pathetic bottom of the order will do better against our old pal Oliver, I don’t care how great he was in the regular season or so far this post-season he is still the Oliver that made his MLB debut in 1988!!!

  70. 100 pitches of fun... October 19th, 2009 at 6:07 pm

The Yankee scouting has been impeccable in the playoffs so far. They seem to always be in position when the ball is hit hard.

  73. J i n x J i n x J i n x J i n x October 19th, 2009 at 6:07 pm

The Angels’ bullpen (Bulger, Palmer, Oliver, Jepsen, and Fuentes) shut down the Yankees offense once again, allowing the Angels to come back to win this game.

We need some runs! Now would be a good time for the bottom of the order to start contributing.

  75. vin October 19th, 2009 at 6:07 pm

    repost:

Scioscia has nothing to gain by keeping Weaver in the game. Oliver has been very good for them, and Weaver has been walking the tightrope all day. The last thing the Angels need is to give back any more runs.

  76. Pov October 19th, 2009 at 6:07 pm

  77. Lohud couch time October 19th, 2009 at 6:07 pm

How is McCarver so shocked to learn that a 95 mph fastball doesnt cross the plate at 95? has he ever heard of a fast gun or a slow gun? it totally baffles me how these networks and espn wont put decent color guys on air.

  78. stacey October 19th, 2009 at 6:07 pm

now we go to LA bullpen..hope yanks get to it the way they should..yanks havent really hit there pen yet in this series .

  79. Yankees Fan Living in Hostile Territory (BoSox area) October 19th, 2009 at 6:07 pm

The announcers on Fox are killing me . . .
    what about this:
Tim McCarver tried to answer the trivia question of how many pairs of brothers have played for the Angels by…naming all the Angels who haven’t had brothers on the team. Seems a roundabout process of elimination to me, but hey, I did not “Play the Game”.

  80. Jeremy October 19th, 2009 at 6:07 pm

They need to score some more runs. They can’t assume that their pitcher are going to be perfect.

  106. JasonR October 19th, 2009 at 6:12 pm

“When did Oliver become anything but a punching bag?

Isn’t he the same guy that pitched for Texas all those years?”

The funniest part of The BS Report ALCS preview with Simmons and JackO was the Darren Oliver exchange.

“Darren Oliver pitched well against the Red Sox…but he’s still Darren Oliver.”

  107. G. Love October 19th, 2009 at 6:12 pm

I’m really tired of the procession of people in here who attempt to portray themselves as “better fans” by mocking people who react to things happening in the game in here or getting nervous or excited when something goes wrong.

That’s what’s called being a fan. If we all sat on our hands and were polite and contrite about the games, it would be akin to watching cricket at a senior citizen home.

The reason Yankee stadium gets as loud as it gets is because of the fans who overreact and get excited at everything.

You’re not better than them because you’re calmer. In fact, you’re basically boring.

I’d rather have a blog of passionate people than a bunch of holier than thou know it alls any day of the week.

  108. K9 October 19th, 2009 at 6:13 pm

    Erica,

Hands down the best subs I have ever tried. I think they have been around since the 50’s. Sinatra would have them delivered to him whenever he was playing there. The Beatles were big fans as well. It is a short walk from Tropicana or an even shorter drive if you want to avoid the street toughs.

Most of the time the line extends out the store and around the block but it is so worth it.

Nick Swisher single handedly kept the Angels in this game with his horrible AB’s with runners at 3rd, less than 2 outs. What do you expect to happen against a good team on the road?

You can’t go 0-6 with RISP and strand two guys at third with 1 out in a close game and expect it to stay that way. It would be nice if the offense would step it up for once.

  279. SJ44 October 19th, 2009 at 6:34 pm

That’s what happens when you have too many guys incapable of advancing runners in your lineup.

If Swisher could hit 2 flyballs instead of swinging at every ball in the dirt, the Vlad HR doesn’t hurt.

Unfortunately, Andy had no margin for error and it’s a series again.

This lineup has to stop swinging at balls in the dirt.

If not, winning 2 more games is going to be very tough.

Cano moved up runners each time and Swisher has a tough time with Weaver, that’s already been established. That’s baseball, just like Guerrero hitting the HR, it’s no more impossible that Arod tieing the game on Saturday with the HR on an 0-2 count.

“I take it back, it must have been the real rconn yesterday. You were posting the same old defeatest stuff yesterday.”

Angel, it’s the same story that’s killed this team in years past. Failure to hit with RISP. You can’t keep asking the starting pitchers to keep the Angels offense down.

Losing this game would be a big blow to the Yankees. There were so many opportunities for them to blow the game open.

  375. Yankee Trader October 19th, 2009 at 6:45 pm

Time for Joba and Hughes to earn their meager pay!

  381. SJ44 October 19th, 2009 at 6:47 pm

Cano’s job is to drive in runs. Not advance baserunners with weak swings on balls out of the zone.

Swisher is now 0-17 in the post-season and has swung at exactly ONE strike in 3 games in this series.

DFA? No but, if he can’t hit, sit him, put Melky in RF and start Gardner.

It’s the playoffs. Black holes in your lineup kill you and if you can remove one, you do it.

  382. Heyya October 19th, 2009 at 6:47 pm

    rconn23,

Sure, losing the game would hurt, but it would hurt more for the Angels considering it surely means their season is over. So no need to worry.

The offense has failed both of these teams in this series, it happens.

  383. G. Love October 19th, 2009 at 6:47 pm

Swisher’s a mess right now. He needs to snap out of it.

Yes, Cano moved runners up. Unfortunately, hitting weak ground balls that would have both been double play balls had he hit them a tad harder doesn’t make them good at bats.

The bottom of the lineup is flaccid so far tonight.

The fact that Posada and Matsui can’t run isn’t helping Girardi’s options during their at bats either.

    Still, this game ain’t over.

  384. SWISHER SALUTE! October 19th, 2009 at 6:47 pm

Andy missed dead center 4 times in the at bat with vlad. I simply don’t understand it. 4 times in the middle of the plate to a guy with zero plate discipline. The 4th center cut fastball turned this entire series around. I can’t stop thinking about it. Girardi comes out to talk, and he throws a 4th dead center 89mph fastball. 390. CK in LA October 19th, 2009 at 6:48 pm

  392. stfraw October 19th, 2009 at 6:48 pm

    Two negatives of todays game:

    1. JOE GIRARDI – he made a big mistake interrupting Petitte
    2. NICK SWISHER – should be benched cause he’s an offensive ZERO this postseason.

We got that game and now because of Girardi it’s getting tough.

  420. Heyya October 19th, 2009 at 6:52 pm

  470. CB October 19th, 2009 at 6:56 pm

Andy really looked like he tired rapidly in this game. He really struggled that last inning and the Angels started squaring the ball up well. They are fortunate the Angels didn’t score more runs.

The offense has been very poor yet again today but that happens in the playoffs.

The yankees are the second highest scoring team in the playoffs so far – only the phillies are scoring more runs per game.

As difficult and in a certain respect unfair as it may seem Andy needed to do a better job today. The offense is in such a funk, rightly or wrongly, the pitching staff just has to be better than the other team’s.

Angel, I think some of these posters enjoy being miserable, they call for Andy’s immediate retirement after that HR, nevermind his pitching a decent game, retire now they say! No baseball intelligence.

    *****************************************

They’re just the same idiots with randomly generated names that come out of the woodwork every time things look the slightest bit challenging for the Yankees.

They disappear once that stops being the case.

  484. sammy October 19th, 2009 at 6:57 pm

okay. Now we just need some to conjure up some offense in the next six outs.

here we go, guys. Let’s giddy up now.

… oh. Did I just see Marte up in the ‘pen?

  485. C October 19th, 2009 at 6:57 pm

Good thing Swisher hit those sac flies earlier for insurance

  486. SJ44 October 19th, 2009 at 6:57 pm

And that’s the ballgame because the dead bat offense is in full bloom.

Hopefully Girardi sits Swisher tomorrow and changes up the lineup.

If not, going to be tough to win a game out here.

  493. terpbomber October 19th, 2009 at 6:58 pm

Well, Joba is no more infallible than any one else on the team. Having it happen in October makes it a little more painful, tho.

  494. Mac Daddy October 19th, 2009 at 6:58 pm

andys mad at himself for not saying no to joe and posada when they decided to throw a 2-2 fastball to vlad…horrible job out of posada and girardi on the selection and andy for not speaking up

  495. Boston Dave - 6 wins to go October 19th, 2009 at 6:58 pm

you honestly think these Yankees are out of any game when they have 6 outs left??

    cmon now.

  496. Ba Ba Baloney October 19th, 2009 at 6:58 pm

Joba likes pitching to anyone not Jorge.

  497. rconn23 October 19th, 2009 at 6:58 pm

No one is saying the series is over. No one should have been surprised if Weaver pitched great and the Angels scored a lot of runs because they have a great offense.

But they didn’t. The Yankees left an army on base today, esepcially Cano, Melky and Swisher.

You can’t expect 38-year old Andy Pettitte to pitch a shutout against this lineup.

He made two bad pitches. The Yankees offense cost Pettitte the game.

  498. Carl October 19th, 2009 at 6:58 pm

  515. youronthemark-texiera October 19th, 2009 at 6:59 pm

3 rockets off joba. he doesnt deserve this 7th inning bestowed on him. his stuff has been below avg all year. to think he will suddenly turn into a lights out 7th inning guy when he was NOT used this way all season long is beyond my understanding. he is NOT the same guy ever since hurting his arm 2 yrs ago.

  516. Frustrated K October 19th, 2009 at 6:59 pm

  517. sammy October 19th, 2009 at 7:00 pm

  521. Trevor October 19th, 2009 at 7:00 pm

The offense is crap. No one is asking for them to score 8 runs a game in the playoffs.
How about simply getting a sac fly? Even Teixeira in game 1 against Lackey failed to do that.

  522. Jason October 19th, 2009 at 7:00 pm

Tie game and we have plenty left in the bullpen. I dont see where the concern is. Do people like to forget that, should the Yanks somehow lose this game, the Angels still have to beat C.C. not once but TWICE?

  523. G. Love October 19th, 2009 at 7:00 pm

I think Andy is gonna punch Joba.

  524. Scared of the Wall October 19th, 2009 at 7:00 pm

Joba’s been inconsistent the entire year, and the fact that he’s back in the bullpen doesn’t change that. When it comes to the bullpen, they should go with what worked during the regular season.

  525. CB October 19th, 2009 at 7:00 pm

“Pettitte WAS better than the the other team’s pitching.”

Ok. He had to be considerably better and couldn’t make any mistakes.

    But he did.

That might not be fair but that ‘s the way it is with the general level of offense we’ve seen around baseball in the playoffs and particularly with the fall off in run production we’ve seen from the yankees.

  526. Bronx Jeers October 19th, 2009 at 7:00 pm

These guys are smoking Joba right now.

    Good move Joe.

Personally, I would have let Andy battle it out but that’s just me.

If they lose this game, it’s on Swisher. Hit 2 SF, you are up 3-0 in the series.

Instead, the Angels are back in the series.

CC needs to be great tomorrow and Joe has to change the lineup.

The offense is dead and you can’t expect Alex to do it by himself.

  541. kimoinsd October 19th, 2009 at 7:01 pm

I think it’s quite odd that Girardi was roundly (and loudly) criticized for taking Andy out too early in Minnesota. He obviously saw something that wasn’t apparent to the rest of us. I certainly hope that criticism didn’t enter his thinking tonight preventing him from removing Andy before the damage was done. I guess he can take solace in the fact that his replacement probably would have given up even more runs.

  622. CB October 19th, 2009 at 7:08 pm

    BD,

If the yankees do go on to lose this game (which I’m not assuming in anyway…) it’s absolutely true that it will be the offenses fault.

But the Angels had the second best offense in the AL this year and their offense has been worse than the yankees so far.

They had a 3-1 lead and Andy needed to finish out that inning and he couldn’t.

    That’s disappointing.

It’s clear that some games you are going to need to win in the playoffs with brilliant pitching.

Today has been one of those days.

Andy was good today – but in the playoffs good often isn’t enough from a starting pitcher.

But on the whole, of course, Nick Swisher’s utter incompetence in this game and in the post season has been something to behold.

UPDATE, 7:10 p.m.: This is one of those good news/bad news situations: Posada just hit a game-tying homer to dead center but it came seconds after Gardner was caught stealing. Instead of being up a run, they’re tied at 4. I think they’ll take it.

    *****
Lame comment, like Posada would have received the same pitch to hit if Gardner was on second.

I’d rather have GGBG get on and get caught than have Melky keep swinging at absolute junk. At least that would mean GGBG was attempting to contribute.

Melk has been swinging at that garbage all post-season (and longer). All pitchers have made the adjustment but he still swings at it. Absolutely ridiculous.

  928. JC October 19th, 2009 at 7:27 pm

I’m simply amused by random imbeciles clamoring for Gardner to start when he’s an awful hitter (at best) and doesn’t even accomplish the one thing he’s asked to do.

Where would we be without Teixera? Seriously? Would we be in the postseason without him? That’s debatable both ways, but if position plays had W-L columns, Teixera would have at least 4-5 wins for defense.

  986. pat October 19th, 2009 at 7:32 pm

  989. terpbomber October 19th, 2009 at 7:33 pm

Tex isn’t contributing with his bat in this series (yet), but he has prevented potential runs from getting on base. That’s just as important.

  990. Pov October 19th, 2009 at 7:33 pm

    Angels bullpen, 2 earned runs

  998. Donna L October 19th, 2009 at 7:33 pm

If they don’t score in the top of the 9th, I hope Joe leaves Hughes in for the bottom of the 9th instead of wasting him with only 2/3 of an inning. Then Mo in the 10th (one innning only), followed I guess by Aceves and Robertson. Or you could save Mo for another inning or two in case they take the lead.

If they bring Fuentes in in the 9th, I’m sure he won’t throw anything near the plate to A-Rod.
