Closers are melting down all over the playoffs but Mariano Rivera remains the gold standard, Chad Jennings writes. It’ll be interesting to see how Rivera’s 2 1/3 innings of work in Game 2 affect him – if at all – the rest of the series.

Alex Rodriguez has been talking about how he’s “in a good place” for a while but now it’s true in a literal sense: A-Rod has great career numbers at Angel Stadium, and he’ll be looking to continue his breakout October. More on that in my column.

CC Sabathia will get the call in Game 4 on short rest, Joe Girardi said, and the notebook also has news on a potential milestone for Andy Pettitte, a place for fans to watch Game 3 (hint: it’s in the Bronx) and more.

—-

The early start and the three-hour time difference mean everything is a little compressed before the game today. At the very least, we’ll have the game post and lineup up as soon as its available.

“I read that the balloon boy’s dad is going to charged criminally. Good. That kind of “prank” is horrific”

anyone who names their kid, Falcon, is a weirdo

  2. Mo Money

Can someone explain me the benefits of this start time? The first answer is usually always TV, but why would net works want the game to start at 4 so the largest market in the world misses the first 2/3 of the game? This makes no sense to me at all.

  3. Fondo Motz

The alternative is putting the game on head to head with the Phillies/Dodgers tonite. While I would have no problem missing the latter, others don’t feel that way.

  4. Betsy

Nick, you think AJ has been bad enought that you only want to see him one more time between now and the end of the WS?

GB, I beg to differ with you. AJ will be starting at least one more time in this series and, if it gets that far, two more times in the WS.

  5. Wade

People from the oc will miss the whole game. That is if they have to work

  6. Casanova Wong

Mo’s 2.1 innings entailed him throwing 25 pitches. That’s like a bullpen session. He should be fine.

  7. Betsy

I admit I’m worried about Andy now, with his whole mechanical issue thing maybe not quite sorted out yet. One start in the ALDS doesn’t mean everything is hunky dory with his mechanics and, as Sam pointed out, his last start against the Angels was terrible. I hope he pitches well today, but he’s going to need to as the Yankees are not hitting and Weaver is going to be tough.

  8. Paco Dooley

I am totally jazzed that today’s game is a day game! I never thought that MLB would run an afternoon LCS game on a Monday. As an NYer living in the UK, this means I can watch a game that matters in real time, without having to end up like a sleep deprived zombie!

  9. upstate kate

    Betsy
remember CC’s last start at Tampa before playoffs, he was awful. Andy will be fine, he is a big game pitcher.

  10. #23 Hitman

Agreed. Im going to bobbing and weaving thru traffic on my way home from work today trying to get back to watch the game. Id be ticked if I were an Angels fan.

  11. Betsy

I still don’t want to see Joe managing the pen like he did on Saturday – that was ridiculous (and true, how knows how Mo is going to react at this point).

  12. Joe

    Is it 4:00 yet?

  13. 86w183

    Betsy —

You strike me as someone who could win the lottery and spend the entire night worrying about the tax implications.

Try to relax and have some fun. Andy has allowed three runs or less in 7-of-8 starts, 10-of-12 and 12-of-15 dating back to mid July.

  14. upstate kate

The pressure is really on the Angels. Our guys will be able to play relaxed.
Not crazy about the 4 pm start time but I would rather have the early start time then a 10 pm start.

  15. jankees junkie

girardi did a masterful job managing the pen the other day. when he seemed to be overmanaging the relievers, changing so often in the division series, it was to get everybody into the postseason and settled down for the long haul of the playoffs, now he’s reaping the rewards of that.

when he managed the marlins (and won manager of the year) the one complaint that people threw out about him was that he burned out his pitching staff, this season, he developed his bullpen by trial and error early on, sorted it out and found the combinations that work, spread out the work so nobody got overused, and now he’s pushing all the buttons at the right time.

i’d say his bullpen use this year has been tremendous.

i’d rank girardi as the 2nd best manager in baseball this season, slightly behind scioscia and way ahead of everybody else.

  16. upstate kate

By limiting Phil and Joba’s pitching, Girardi ensures he has them today. Robertson has really come up big this post season. Maybe he is next season’s EIG, when Phil returns to starting.

  17. Patrick

I can’t complain about Girardi’s use of the pen in Game 2 since he had Gaudin to fall back on in case the game went even longer. Essentially, he had enough pitchers to go 19 innings that night.

The only thing that is bothering me right now is if the Yankees win the next two games they will be off for over a week. The World Series starts a week from Wednesday – 10/28. It’s not that I’m worried about the Yankees performing after a long break, I’m worried about my own sanity waiting that long!

Hopefully the Yankees do win the next two games because I think dealing with a loss will be harder than dealing with a week of no Yankee baseball :)

  18. randy l.

“Try to relax and have some fun.”

    betsy-

don’t listen to him. the yankees have gotten to where they are with you worrying.

if you change now, who knows what that could do to the mojo.

the yankees need you. keep doing what you’ve been doing :)

  19. Travis

Agreed. Mariano threw 25 pitches in those 2+ innings. It’s not like he labored.

  20. yankee fan se ct.

Did anyone hear bald Vinny on the fan?
He believes Nick Swisher owes him endorsement rights on the t-shirts he sells.
I don’t think Nick Swisher signed with the Yankees to be in business with Vinny.
I sit directly behind Vinny and have for years and I think he is wrong on this one.
    What do you think?

  21. Doreen

    randy l –

I was just about to write the same thing to Betsy!

Besides, I think she writes what a lot of people think, but don’t want to say. :)

  22. upstate kate

    Betsy needs to keep worrying
Erica needs to continue w/ the timely showering
Doreen needs to continue w/ the Yankees theme meals…so what is on for today? will it be lunch or dinner, given the early start?

  23. jennifer

    yankee fan

What exactly does he mean by enforcement rights? He wants Swish to do a commercial for him? Or he wants a cut of what profit Swish gets from the Modells shirt? Doesn’t Swish have more important things to worry about like winning the ALCS, and the WS than some guy who sells t-shirts of the street?

  24. Doreen

    upstate kate -

    Oh! My! Goodness!

it HAS to be lunch. Or afternoon snack. It has to be. So, I best get on it. The dessert part is under control, and I had an idea for dinner, but that will be too late. I can still do the dinner I was planning, but it’s imperative that there be something to eat during the game.

(Given the length of Yankees games, I could still make it dinner, though.)

We can munch on Apples and Peanut butter as an appetizer at the start of the game. (Unless I come up with something better now that I realize I have to think about that.)

  25. Imback

Girardi has been phenomenol in his mngt of pen. No one remembers how bad it was ad the beginning of year. He MADE the bullpen into the best in al. People with a simple outview say it’s from putting Hughes in as the 8th inning guy. That’s a part of it but it’s the handling of Ace, drob, coke, marte, and now joba that is the key. He wad as big a star last victory as arod and hairston. He kept yanks in it as they tried to give game away.

  26. Erica - always OPPC

6 hours and 29 minutes until Game 3!!!!!!!!!

  27. Erica - always OPPC

    Upstate Kate-

I am back to fulfill my showering duties.

Although, Angel did shower at precisely the right time on Saturday night in my absense. I was trying to send Yankee people telepathic messages while I was away

  28. Casanova Wong

Yea, Girardi really burned through the bullpen.

    Coke .1 ip
    Chamberlain .1 ip
    Hughes .2 ip
    Marte .1 ip
    Aceves 1.1 ip
    K-Rob 1.1 ip
    Rivera 2.1 ip

The only person who could possibly be a little tired is Mo, but he didn’t throw too many pitches and has had a day off.

  31. Erin

I’m getting very excited for this afternoon. My boss very kindly allowed me to rearrange my schedule this week, so I’ll be able to get home in time for the game today.

It’ll be strange not seeing Cano’s ninja look today-I’ve grown rather fond of it. :)

  32. jennifer

Jay don’t you think you should send an email instead of doing through the blog? And what does radicilous mean? I’ve never heard that word before.

  33. Erica - always OPPC

I am heading out now to do a few errands (vacation day.. woohoo!!)

I SHOULD be back around 11 to start GTLU. If I am late, it will start immediately upon my return

  34. betsy

Randy, lol – true. However, what will happen when I’m on vacation and I can’t worry as much? I will not be tied to this blog and the game, so my worrying will be minimized. Someone is going to have to carry the torch for me…..

  35. Vrsce

    Jay

It seems you are a fraud. Built any ballons lately?

  36. betsy

Doreen, lol – probably true. I hate being a worrywart, but such is life – a leopard can’t change his spots. I’m pretty sure I worried in 1998, too…

  37. Mark in Tampa

I don’t think Swish has anything to do with the shirts Modell’s is selling so Bald Vinny needs to do some fact checking before he speaks out. Swisher posted recently on his website, facebook and swisher that he had nothing to do with the shirts and specifically said to buy the shirts at baldvinny.com….

  43. Brian from PA

  44. vitus

Well, game time is 4am for me, I guess I will swallow a sleeping pill now and try to wake up at 4.

I hope yankees make it 3-0 after this game, and make my sacrafice worth while. Go Yankees!!

  45. vitus

    Beedog!

Good day mate! I lived in Brisbane for 17 years

  46. jankees junkie

why dont u cut out the spam for your t-shirt racket already.

  47. Vrsce

Ballon is the French word for Balloon and by analogy also for other different spheric objects

  48. Vrsce

    or a stupid spelling error

  49. Bronx Jeers

You better worry extra hard between now and the start of your vacation.

And remember, while your wasting away in Margaritaville, the Yankees will be working extra hard to avoid serious physical injury and the unbearable embarassment of losing.

  50. Ham Fighters

man pete must be loving life! he got to sit home an watch his beloved patriots crush, then sat in front of the tv and live blogged the phillies game for nobody (11 comments) its like stealing! and once again, he avoided all that flying around covering the alcs and, god forbid, the WS!

  51. jennifer

    Brian

Yep I read that mlb players association can do the shirts without the players knowledge and approval. For someone who acts like a super fan who knows all he should know this. I Swish supposed to stand by Vinny’s table and tell everyone to buy for him? What more is the man supposed to do? I don’t want Swish wasting any time with this nonsense. I want him concentrating on bringing a WS back to NY. If Vinny is the super fan that he claims he is, than he will drop this nonsense and let Swish just play ball.

  52. Brian from PA

agreed, Jennifer. It’s strange that Vinny would make a fuss about it at this point, and kind of annoying.

  53. Jay

Chad, this is radicilous, I’m an ultra orthodox jew & I never saw anything anti semitic writen on this group when pete was here, can’t u filter anti semitic coments?? This grp became just bad & if those ugly coments won’t stop I’ll get together with other jews & close this grp by court…

Bald Vinny is looking for publicity…that’s it

  55. Brian from PA

Jay……its was like 2 comments, hours ago. Maybe e-mail Chad if you’re that upset about it. constantly posting the same spelling error-laden message here is just getting annoying.

Also, what is an “ultra” Orthodox jew? are you like 5 jews morphed into 1 mega jew?

  56. Noreaster

You can tell alot about a person when they get their 15 minutes of fame…

  57. jennifer

Jay- Stop spamming the blog. Again if you have an issue with what is written write to Chad/Sam we don’t need to keep reading the same thing.

  58. JohnC

My wife is thrilled about the 4 pm start time. Game should be over by 8, so she can watch her beloved ‘Dancing With the Stars’!

  59. Noreaster

Anyway, back to baseball. Andy looked so strong vs the Twins, he should have a heck of a game today. At least you know the pressure won’t get to him.

  60. Blackaccord

I’m gonna miss half the game today.. I wanted to come early and leave early but everything went bad.. woke up late.. came very late to work and will leave pretty late from work.. By the time I go home, hughsie or joba should be pitching..

  61. Casanova Wong

HAHAH you’re going to close this group by courts? This is the internet buddy, people are free to spew whatever sort of idiocies they want.

  62. sam

it was good to see Molina finally get a hit. if there is 3-2 count on figgins, yankee pitchers should just bring the heat ! Aceves did not saturday night and the small hitter got his first hit in 17 AB’s

  63. bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes

    Betsy,

Maybe if you merely up your worry quotient, you’ll be able to ensure us winning in 4 or 5, thus precluding the issue of not having your worry presence on the blog for 6 & 7.

Or perhaps, your higher self has known all along we will win in 4 or 5, and thus you felt free to be away from the blog, having a good time.

This, of course, would make you a real positive “worry free” poster…but don’t worry about that, your secret is safe with me ;) .

  64. Jay

Well if u wouldn stop I wouldn either, Chad, this is radicilous, I’m an ultra orthodox jew & I never saw anything anti semitic writen on this group when pete was here, can’t u filter anti semitic coments?? Bronx Jeers, I hope so because any loss would be unacceptable. They don’t get paid that amount of $$$ to lose…..I hope they recognize that.

Doreen, I used to call myself the Paul O’Neill of fans, except I never kicked over water coolers…. My worry has nothing to do with the confidence I feel (or lack thereof) in the team. If there is nothing to worry about, I worry about that, lol.

Hey Sam,in your article about Mariano being the gold standard for closers, you forgot another closer in postseason that has faltered too,Brian Fuentes(Angels) blew the lead in game 2 ALCS.

In the LAtimes.com yesterday,Greg Beacham wrote that in the history of the Angels postseason, they have never been able to overcome an 0-2 and win.

  78. Just call me Mr. Clutch

Jay, I think you have gone off the deep end. Seriously, why are do you think you are such a victim? If someone made inappropriate comments you are giving them power by acting like a lunatic.

I don’t condone making racist or ethnic based negative comments, but most people ignore morons who make stupid comments.

Frankly, you are acting childishly. How about growing up instead, and realise that this world is made up of all kinds of people? And please, learn how to spell.

I’m glad that you’re going to take advantage. Best deal in town! I hope they get a good crowd. Though I can’t imagine why not (aside from the fact that it’s not a good time). I hope a lot of kids and youth groups take advantage.

Jay, what you need to know is that neither you nor any group has the power to shut down the blog. Newspapers are private enterprises and as owners of the press have the right to do anything they want to – including violating their own policies – as long as they are not breaking any laws.

The first amendment actually gives people the right to say pretty hideous things in a generic sense. It is only when someone is targetting specific individuals as opposed to an entire group that it can rise to the level of being a crime or a violation of the first amendment.

  98. Patrick

I was listening on WFAN this morning when Carton explained the Bald Vinny/Swisher thing.

According to Carton, Bald Vinny made that swisher salute t-shirt. Swisher loved it, started wearing it, etc. So Swish and his agent trademarked the “Swisher Salute” slogan and the picture on the t-shirt and sold the idea to Modell’s. That’s all according to Carton so who knows what the deal is.

Sounds like a pretty crappy thing for Swish to do but it’s well within his rights.

  99. Bronx Jeers

Swish copyrighted “Swisher Salute” and now Modells is selling the t-shirts which is of course sanctioned by MLB.

The ironic thing is that those t-shirts will most likely be available for for 4.99$ come January when Modell’s needs room to sell NFL playoff gear.

  100. jennifer

Trish you never got my reply? If not I’ll resend it again when I get home. ALso email me from that email address.

  101. m

Well, if that’s all true, it does sound bad. But I’m curious, did bald vinny get Swisher’s permission to use his name and likeness in the first place? Mm. Doubt it.

  102. jennifer

Bronx Swish’s people said they copyrighted it for his protection. They don’t want people taking Swisher Salutes and using it how ever they please.

I think that’s kind of a thin excuse. This was clearly done so that Swisher could cash in on the “Swisher Salute” thing.

  107. Patrick

“Patrick Carton is wrong. Swish had an entry posted that said they had nothing to do with the t-shirt sold at Modells it was done without his knowledge.”

Okay maybe so but Swisher did trademark the image meaning he gets money when someone else uses it. So he profits from the t-shirts sold at Modell’s, I believe.

For the record, since I was not on during Saturday night’s game. Here are my thoughts/reactions to the game

    1) A-Rod is really amazing. I don’t know what has gotten into the man the last two weeks but I sure like it

    2) That game would not have been won without two amazing catched by none other than, MPB Johnny Damon. And yes, I was screaming like a girl when he made them. I have seen Johnny take so much crap for his fielding on here, in my opinion very much undeserved. It was great to see him making some game changing catches

    3) There is really nothing to say about Mariano Rivera. I do in fact sometimes wonder if maybe he is just inhuman. Cause there is nothing more automatic.

  109. arliss

    Real Simple:

Bald Vinny is a loser. Always has been. Self promoting pseudo Yankee fan who legitimately believe people come to Yankee games to see him. I am a bleacher season ticket holder……couldnt care less about Bald Vinny. Like I said, guy is a loser.

  110. jennifer

Yes he gets a cut because he is part of the players association. Is he supposed to turn over the check to Vinny? If so why? If the Yankees wanted to they probably could shut down his little t-shirt stand.

  111. arliss

“There is really nothing to say about Mariano Rivera. I do in fact sometimes wonder if maybe he is just inhuman. Cause there is nothing more automatic.”

I really wish you didnt say this.

  112. Hokiehill

anyone else think Jay is secretly a Nazi, posting “radicilous” sounding statements as a Jew to make Jews look bad? Sounds crazy, but possible!

  113. Bronx Jeers

I don’t think Swisher gets any money from the Modells’ shirts, MLB does which in turn pays the players but I don’t think it’s necessarily from the sale of their own “personal merchandise”. It’s more from a general fund and all players get a small slice.

Bald Vinny has no recourse unless he copyrighted or trademarked or whatever you do to protect your idea, and I doubt he could have done it without Swish’s approval.

  114. Rose

I think some people had issues with Girardi’s bullpen use because during the year he would use his relievers for an inning, (example Hughes). During the post season he has been changing pitchers quickly and using a lot of them.

    ————————————————————–
Regarding Pete. He did what is best for him. The Gannett paper is basically a Westchester paper. It is not the Post, Daily News or NY Times. It does not come close to the circulation of those 3 papers. I am sure he made the best decision for him.

  115. pat

Swisher’s agent trademarked it so nothing obscene or profane could be made and Swisher’s name included on it.

A one finger “salute” was the first thing that came to mind that they may have been trying to avoid.

  116. ty

the start times are radiculous, saturdays game should have started at 6 or 7 the latest. 4 is early for a lot of peeps

  117. Hokiehill

Erica…I agree with most of those 3 comments, although I think some of the criticism he gets is deserved (he’s looked pretty bad AT TIMES). As is usually the case on the internet, it goes a bit too far and naturally he doesn’t get the credit when he deserves it.

  118. Erica - always OPPC

    Arliss-

Its okay. I would never jinx my boys. I am way too superstitious. But to clarify, we have seen closers like Fuentes, Lidge, and Nathan blow saves against the Yankees this season. And they are considered some of the best in the game. That is why when Mariano blows a save it is so shocking, its so rare

  119. Trevor

    jeter
    damon
    teixiera
    rodriguez
    matsui
    posada
    cano
    swisher
    gardner

I like to see Gardner make a start. Maybe he gets on base a couple of times and runs wild.

  120. Hokiehill

to take that thought a bit farther with Johnny Dangerously, he certainly doesn’t get the credit he deserves overall as a Yankee contributor. The guy has been great for the Yankees when you consider his offensive and defensive contributions in pin-stripes. I think you’d be hard pressed to find a level-headed Yankee fan that regrets that signing…

  121. Joba in the pen

Phillie game should have started at 4. Warmer in the East during the day.
Yankee game should have started at 8. California games should always be at night.
MLB does what the networks want. Dumb, but money talks.

“Yes he gets a cut because he is part of the players association. Is he supposed to turn over the check to Vinny? If so why? If the Yankees wanted to they probably could shut down his little t-shirt stand.”

Did I ever say that? No. Of course not.

The bottom line is, Vinny came up with the “Swisher Salute” slogan and he came up with the image on the shirt. Swisher then trademarked that idea, even though he didn’t come up with it, and now Vinny can’t prosper from his idea. It’s not against the law what Swisher did but it’s wrong in my opinion.

  124. Erica - always OPPC

    Trevor-

You need to list the positions

  125. jennifer

Patrick – I wasn’t directing it at you. I was just making a general statement. And Vinny should have been smarter and trademarked the idea. It is his loss.

  126. Fran (the original) and OPPC member

    Erica,

I need to run out but I had to make sure to play GTLU before I left :)

    Here is my line-up
    Jeter SS
    Damon LF
    Tex 1B
    Alex 3B
    Matsui DH
    Posada C
    Cano 2B
    Swisher RF
    Melky CF

    Thanks. Hope you enjoyed AC.

  127. Chris 2

Gotta go with the A-Lineup indeed:

    Jeter SS
    Damon LF
    Teix 1B
    A-Rod 3B
    Matsui DH
    Posada C
    Cano 2B
    Swisher RF
    Melky CF

I would love to see Gardner play, but he just isn’t as good as Melky.

  128. Bronx Jeers

Hey you gotta love Swisher and I surely do but I’ll pass on the “Swisher Salute” T-shirt.

If I’ve got 15 bucks to blow in my Yankee budget, it’s on a beer and a hot dog.

    Here’s my idea for a Yankee-LoHud t-shirt:

“Johnny & Erica: Strangers in life…Lovers on LoHud “

  129. Joba in the pen

Damon is a gamer. It was a good signing by the Yankees. He has made some good plays in the outfield, but he is not a good defensive outfielder. But offensively, I’ll take him at bat in a pressure situation.

  130. Erin

Erica-how was your trip? Did your friends make it through the entire game?

  131. Patrick

“Patrick – I wasn’t directing it at you. I was just making a general statement. And Vinny should have been smarter and trademarked the idea. It is his loss.”

Yeah it is unfair but don’t you feel bad that his idea is basically being stolen by Modell’s? Shouldn’t he be able to prosper from something he created?

  132. Trevor

    ss derek
    lf johnny
    1b mark
    3b alex
    dh hideki
    c jorge
    2b robinson
    rf nick

  133. NYY626

Erica – i’m pretty sure I heard you scream when Johnny made that catch.

    SS – Jetes
    LF – Damon
    1B – Tex
    3B – Mr. Hudson
    DH – Matsui
    C – Jorge
    2b – Ninja
    RF – Swish
    CF – Melky

    Bronx Jeers-

LOL. That sounds like a winner to me.

Unfortunately, the rest of the world is not in on the MPB joke. Otherwise, it comes across creepy. But I sure would wear it

  135. Andrew GTLU Bronze Medalist

    Erica, today’s lineup should be:

    Jeter SS
    Damon LF
    Teixeira 1B
    Rodriguez 3B
    Matsui DH
    Posada C
    Cano 2B
    Swisher RF
    Cabrera CF

    Sort of…..

We managed to hang out at the table eating dinner at the bar until around the 7th inning. Thankfully, a massive and hysterical argument over buffalo wings broke out and lasted about 2 innings. Then we paid the check and went to the main bar area.

We stayed at the bar drinking and watching the game. I switched to soda by the 8th innng. Unfortunately, my friends did not. (We had been drinking since about 2 in the afternoon so you can only imagine). I began to get the feeling this game better end soon. Sadly, it did not.

It the 11th it looked like the game would end at the Yanks would lose. Then A-Rod did his magic. My friends acted really excited which was cool. The drunkest friend was refusing to leave the bar because (in her words) “I have invested way too much time in this game. I will see the end)

By the top of the 13th, I could not in good conscience, allow my friend to sit at that bar and drink anymore while we waited for the game to end. So I insisted we leave the bar and go back to the main casino floor where TVs were set up and we could gamble more.

I was actually standing in the middle of the casino yelling “run, run, run” when the Yankees finally won the game :-)

“A” Lineup to go up 3-0

    Jeter – ss
    Damon – lf
    Tex – 1b
    Alex – 3b

    Erica,
I read you last comment to Erin, so does that mean you won while at the casino. Too bad it wasn’t in Vegas where you could have won $.

I lost $60. Which is probably the least amount of money I have ever lost there. I came home a happy girl

  142. Bronx Jeers

I’m sure more people know about the “Swisher Salute” than the MPB joke but I doubt it’s the difference is as astronomical as we we imagine.

    The “roll call” ?

Personally, in the top of the 1st I’m focusing on the pitcher and not how the players respond to the tired roll call.

Other than Johnny and Swish, most just give a perfunctory wave of the glove and are focusing on the game. Especially the infield.

Remember when Melky misplayed a ball because he was busy answering the roll call?

    Funny story-

I was once in a store with a friend who wanted to buy something for her niece. I saw a child sized Damon t-shirt and said, “I should buy this for Ernie”

My friend asked me who had a child named Ernie. I told her, it would be for my Ernie doll. LOL

Anyway, Yankee Snoopy has his inaugural Yankee Stadium jersey. I do not want to change his clothes because what he is wearing works so well for him
